NARRATOR: Ireland.

0:05

This lush, green island in the North Atlantic

0:07

has a history of human activity

0:10

dating back more than 33,000 years.

0:14

Numerous cultures have called Ireland home,

0:17

from the early Beaker People, to the Celts and the Gaels.

0:22

And the island has a rich tradition of folklore

0:25

that has spread throughout the world.

0:29

But perhaps most notable is that Ireland

0:32

boasts some of the oldest structures on the planet.

0:35

Massive earthen mounds,

0:38

many of which date back more than 5,000 years.

0:42

TOK THOMPSON: These mounds are constructed. They're not natural hills.

0:44

These are megalithic constructions

0:46

involving, in the larger sites, an enormous amount

0:50

of man hours and labor.

0:53

These would have been, when they were made,

0:55

just very, very impressive sites.

0:58

CHILDRESS: These mounds were an ancient earth work

1:02

that had a tunnel going through it,

1:05

with stones on either side, and stones on top

1:08

and then covered with earth.

1:11

THOMPSON: Ireland has a tremendous amount of these mounds.

1:14

These are some of mankind's oldest,

1:16

large structures in the world.

1:19

And they anchor all the land together.

1:21

Usually if you visit one on top of a hill, you go up,

1:23

you find one, and you can do a line of sight to the next one.

1:27

There was almost a network, almost across

1:28

the entire island of these sites.

1:33

NARRATOR: The oldest known writing in Ireland

1:35

dates to the sixth century AD,

1:39

more than 3,000 years after the ancient mounds

1:42

are believed to have been built.

1:44

With no written record about the mounds' construction,

1:47

archaeologists and historians can only speculate

1:51

as to who made them, and for what purpose.

1:55

THOMPSON: These things were built to go inside,

1:57

where presumably very, very important rituals took place.

1:59

We don't know, but much later on,

2:02

these sites would have been used for gatherings,

2:04

for rituals, and sort of keeping the society together.

2:10

These were enormously long-lived sites of cultural importance.

2:13

It was enormously long-lived societies

2:15

that used these as focal points.

2:18

NARRATOR: 30 miles north of Dublin in County Meath

2:22

is Ireland's largest and oldest mound, called Newgrange.

2:27

The ancient structure consists of over

2:29

200,000 tons of stone,

2:32

and has a passageway leading to a central chamber,

2:35

in which human bone fragments have been found.

2:39

But archaeologists say Newgrange also has

2:41

an undeniable connection to the cosmos.

2:46

Spiral petroglyphs thought to symbolize the universe

2:49

are found all around it, and the passageway and chamber

2:53

form a cruciform shape that researchers believe

2:56

is based on the constellation Cygnus.

3:01

At the time Newgrange was built,

3:02

it was presumed to be the largest structure

3:05

that mankind had ever built in the world.

3:08

Now, one of the most interesting things about Newgrange

3:11

is its celestial alignment.

3:13

This is still very, very popular.

3:14

If you go at the winter solstice,

3:16

you have this sun dagger

3:17

that it cuts tremendous distance,

3:19

all the way in to brighten up the inner chamber.

3:23

NARRATOR: Newgrange is unique among Ireland's mounds

3:26

in its sophistication, and was clearly designed

3:29

for ritualistic activity.

3:32

But according to ancient Irish texts,

3:35

the mounds serve a more profound,

3:37

and mysterious purpose, as the dwelling places

3:41

of otherworldly beings

3:43

traditionally called the "sidhe."

3:46

JENNY BUTLER: The word "sidhe," it can mean the mounds,

3:49

and also can mean the otherworld people,

3:53

the people of the mounds.

3:56

In Irish tradition, it's bad luck

3:59

to use the word "sidhe" to directly refer

4:03

to these otherworld people.

4:05

So, there are many different names.

4:07

We have the English word fairy folk, also elves.

4:11

NARRATOR: Stories of fairies, elves, and even leprechauns,

4:16

are rooted in the ancient folklore

4:18

of what the Irish called the sidhe.

4:20

But for many Irish people,

4:23

the sidhe are not merely mythological figures.

4:28

MARTY MULLIGAN: Fairies and leprechauns and all that sort of stuff, like,

4:30

too many people kind of laugh and joke about it at times.

4:33

But it's knowledge that had been passed on

4:34

for thousands and thousands of years.

4:37

We have the terrestrial world,

4:39

and the sub-terrestrial world, the human world,

4:41

and the superhuman or other world.

4:44

These worlds exist in parallel.

4:47

Occasionally, however, there is communication

4:49

between the two worlds.

4:52

NARRATOR: The mounds are often referred to as fairy forts,

4:56

as are stone circles and tree clusters

4:59

that are considered the property of the sidhe.

5:02

This strong cultural belief that these features

5:05

are the domain of otherworldly beings

5:08

has kept them intact for thousands of years.

5:11

And the Irish say that when they are disturbed,

5:14

bad luck always follows.

5:18

MULLIGAN: Sean Quinn was the wealthiest man in Ireland.

5:21

He lost everything because he moved a fairy fort.

5:24

He damaged a fairy fort,

5:26

and he moved it to another place.

5:29

DeLorean car manufacturers, they came to Belfast

5:32

and were making the DeLorean car up in Northern Ireland.

5:35

And they built the factory on the site of a fairy fort.

5:38

And it all came crashing down.

5:39

The local people would say,

5:41

"Well, you know, what do you expect?"

5:43

Ask any Irish person, "Would you damage a fairy fort?

5:47

What would happen if you damaged a fairy tree?"

5:49

If you gave me ten million bucks

5:52

and a Cadillac and a helicopter

5:54

and a beautiful house on Sunset Boulevard,

5:58

and said all I had to do was chop down a fairy tree,

6:00

I'd be handing that money straight back to you.

6:02

I wouldn't do it, no one I know would do it either.

6:04

So, do we believe in the fairies in Ireland?

6:07

We do.
