Hi everyone, welcome to the talk lab

0:02

with scientist podcast channel and

0:05

YouTube channel.

0:13

I am a Sri Lankan science journalist and

0:16

I am a Sri Lankan PhD student in biology

0:19

currently studying at University of

0:21

Florida, USA. Today joining with Syoc

0:25

Lab is another eminent scientist from

0:29

Sri Lanka who is actually one of my

0:33

personal role models as well. A

0:35

scientist that I have always looked up

0:37

to and also one of my own teachers who

0:41

have always um

0:44

inspired me in my research. When I first

0:47

entered University of Kalania as an

0:50

undergraduate, uh when I was enrolling

0:53

at the faculty of science, uh my father

0:56

mentioned to me that there is this

0:59

particular senior professor in

1:01

University of Kalania who has achieved

1:04

uh something that is very rare for Sri

1:07

Lankan scientists. He said there is this

1:10

senior professor called professoral Amra

1:13

Singha who has been awarded a doctor of

1:17

science a DSC from University of Banga

1:21

in the UK and and he also for for his

1:25

significant contribution to Sri Lankan

1:28

research for his research in the in his

1:31

field and also has a very high edge

1:34

index I don't remember the number now

1:37

but a very high number back then I was

1:40

just an undergraduate just starting off

1:42

and I had no idea what an H index was or

1:46

what uh DSC was. I just it just gave me

1:50

the idea that it is something great to

1:53

achieve. uh but then when I came to my

1:56

third year I got the chance to uh be

2:00

actually meet professor Muras Singha and

2:03

be one of his students and that's when I

2:05

actually realized professor Singha is a

2:08

great researcher indeed

2:11

not because not just because of his

2:14

achievements and the index but also

2:17

because of the depth of knowledge he had

2:20

about his subject about his research and

2:24

also because of the passion he showed

2:26

for his research. Uh so it is my great

2:30

honor to bring to you professoral

2:34

singing, professor amarita supali

2:36

singing today on site talk lab. Thank

2:39

you very much sir for joining with us

2:42

today joining with me today to share

2:45

your research journey to uh other to the

2:50

younger generation of Sri Lanka. Can you

2:52

can we start off by telling actually who

2:57

you are and what your work actually

3:01

involves?

3:03

>> Yeah, thank you very much uh Moni thanks

3:06

for the introduction. I'm a retired

3:10

academic from the University of Kalania.

3:13

Well, you know I I have uh been

3:18

graduated from the University of Kalania

3:19

in 1978.

3:21

I studied

3:23

uh biological in biological stream and

3:27

specialized in in zoolology from 1974 to

3:30

1978.

3:32

And after my graduation when uh uh I

3:37

worked in the university as a uh um

3:42

academic support staff as an

3:43

administrator and then I joined the

3:46

national science council at that time

3:49

you know now it is called national

3:52

well national yeah in national science

3:55

council that time you know it was name

3:57

was changed later on now it is national

3:59

science foundation then after a few

4:02

months

4:02

uh I joined the ministry of fisheries

4:05

that was in 1980.

4:08

So from 1980 well when I was uh when I

4:12

joined the ministry of fisheries after a

4:14

couple of month a couple of years the

4:17

research division of the ministry of

4:19

fisheries and the postra fishing gear

4:23

sorry no fish technology division the

4:27

institute of fish technology you know

4:29

those two divisions of the ministry of

4:31

fisheries were

4:33

uh converted to a autonomous body called

4:36

nara national aquatic resources agency

4:38

to which all the scientists were

4:41

absorbed. So then I became a scientist

4:44

of uh the national aquatic resources

4:48

research and development agency. So from

4:50

there I have worked uh several years you

4:54

know 13 years or so you know until 1992

4:58

then in 1992 I joined the University of

5:02

Kenya as an academic staff member. So

5:04

there are there were reasons for that

5:05

because you know

5:08

uh when I was working as a scientist you

5:11

know research officer at NAR in 1989 or

5:15

so in late 1980s the government at that

5:19

time decided to stop state patronage for

5:25

the inland fisheries development

5:27

and agriculture development in the

5:28

country for various reasons you know

5:31

politically inspired reasons and Then

5:35

you know my field of research I was

5:37

working on inland fisheries and it you

5:40

know it had a very low priority. Then uh

5:44

you know I was you know my uh research

5:48

grant applications were rejected and uh

5:52

you know the the ministry of fisheries

5:56

of NAR have given very low priorities

6:00

for Indian fisheries. Then I decided to

6:04

leave Narpit Nar and then I talked to my

6:08

professors in the University of Kalania

6:11

and uh

6:13

they were willing to uh take me as a

6:17

lake. Then I applied for a senior le

6:20

position and I joined the minist uh

6:24

university of Kalan in 19 uh 92. So

6:29

until I retired in my 2020, I worked as

6:32

a as an academic in the University of

6:34

California.

6:34

>> Thank you. Yes. Thank you very much sir.

6:37

That is that is a great um introduction

6:40

to the kind of work you do. So like you

6:43

said you work your research involves

6:46

mainly fisheries and um uh fishing

6:50

technology which I believe being uh for

6:55

Sri Lanka has a very significant both

6:58

economic as well as social aspect for

7:01

the country. Can you tell me why you

7:05

your research? So you do this, you first

7:07

did this research affiliated to a

7:10

research institution and then you

7:12

continued that research as an academic

7:15

in the university in a university. How

7:18

does this research that you do as a

7:21

scientist uh important for the

7:24

development of our country and then how

7:28

how is it important for the development

7:31

of the for for the region as a whole and

7:34

then as the world as a whole? Oh well uh

7:37

you know I I believe that I conduct

7:41

research actually you know uh the reason

7:45

why I I have chosen this field you know

7:47

fisheries field you know it is it is

7:50

only that I wanted a job after

7:53

graduation. So I have applied for

7:55

different positions and in fact uh when

7:57

I was an undergraduate but for my

7:59

undergraduate graduate research I have

8:02

done a research project on entomology

8:05

but I uh I did not get a position you

8:09

know a job in the field of enmology and

8:12

perhaps uh the university of Huna wanted

8:16

you know they have professor uh in the

8:18

professor of zology in the university of

8:20

Huna wanted to recruit me as a lecturer

8:24

in Rahul University where I I was

8:28

supposed to be assigned to teach

8:31

enmology. But anyway uh for some reasons

8:36

uh I was not uh taken

8:42

uh as a lecturer to the university. Not

8:46

because of the uh uh you know although

8:51

the professor wanted me to take me you

8:53

know some other people in the the

8:55

university did not want me to be joining

8:58

the university because for some reasons

9:01

why which I don't want to mention

9:03

because you know my during my uh

9:06

university career you know undergraduate

9:09

uh period you know I was uh somewhat

9:11

like rebellion so that people did not

9:14

want me to be in that kind of staff in

9:16

the room you know some people so that is

9:19

why you know I had to you know I was

9:21

looking for some other jobs then uh

9:24

national like science council where I I

9:26

joined as a scientific officer I was

9:29

assigned to work on the soil algae and

9:33

fungi in the Mahavari H area that is

9:37

Rajanga Kalava area which I did not like

9:41

because I I have done zology but why

9:43

should I work on and fungi. So then I I

9:48

was not very happy about the job that I

9:50

got and then I applied for the uh

9:55

research office of position in the

9:56

ministry of fisheries where I have been

9:58

selected. So then that is the reason why

10:01

I have I have uh got into the fisheries

10:07

field that is only to find a job. Once

10:10

once I got this job

10:12

you know I thought of learning the

10:15

subject you know because I have the

10:17

background knowledge from the from my
