Bad HeadGirl: The Origin Of Pink Lady
FULL TRANSCRIPT
bullies, a principal that turned his
eyes away from injustice and a girl who
refused to stand up for herself. This is
the origin of Pink Lady. Hazel became
Pink Lady because bullies did not know
when to stop.
Immediately Sarah got home from school,
she ran to her mother. Mommy, tell me
the origin of Pink Lady. Her mother and
elder sister Sylvia froze. Sylvia looked
at Sophia. You told her dear mother Rita
quickly looked at Sylvia. You told
Sophia. Sylvia raised her hands
slightly. Sophia was being bullied. She
said then she looked at Sophia. Why did
you tell Sarah? Sophia side. Because
Sarah was also being bullied and I could
not protect her. Sarah looked at her
mother and her two elder sisters in
shock. Wait. Everybody knew about Pink
Lady except me. Their mother's face
suddenly changed. Wait, both of you were
being bullied and you did not tell me.
Mommy, that is over now, Sarah said
quickly. Pink Lady has handled the
bullies. Now I want to know the origin
of Pink Lady. Sylvia looked at her
mother and added, "I also want to know
the origin of Pink Lady. You only told
me her name was Hazel. And honestly, I
need some distraction while waiting for
my NYC posting." Their mother took a
deep breath. Sarah, Sophia, go and take
your bath and freshen up. I will tell
you everything. Go on, Sarah shouted as
she ran off. A few minutes later, Sarah
returned quickly. Sylvia, Sophia, Sarah,
and their mother, Rita, sat together in
the bedroom. Then, Rita began. It's a
very tragic story. A story I never
wished to tell. She paused for a moment.
Bullying in community secondary school
did not start today. 35 years ago when I
was a student there, we had very wicked
seniors who entertained themselves by
bullying juniors. And the worst part was
this. Many juniors were looking forward
to becoming seniors so they could bully
others too. During my days as a junior,
my friend Hazel and I were seriously
bullied. But Hazel suffered the most.
The bullying affected her self-esteem
and confidence. There was one senior who
tried as much as possible to protect us.
His name was Senor Edafi. But even he
could only do so much because Hazel and
I always seem to find ourselves in
trouble. Senor Edafi was nice and very
playful. Whenever he saved us from
bullies, he always asked us to give him
something in return. Sometimes we bought
him snacks. Sometimes we ran small
errands for him. Hazel and I never
complained. We were always grateful that
someone was willing to stand up for us.
Hazel loved the color pink so much just
like you, Sarah. Sarah smiled. Yes, pink
lady. Rita nodded slowly. Yes. The
bullies nicknamed her pink lady because
of her love for pink. [music] Her
parents were very poor. From Jess one to
Jess 3, Hazel wore the same long patched
pink dress for every graduation
ceremony. The gown was made from
different shades of pink fabric stitched
together. It was strange and uneven.
Many students laughed whenever she wore
it. That was how they started calling
her pink lady. But that gown was the
most beautiful dress Hazel owned. And
strangely enough, Hazel actually liked
the name Pink Lady. Well, just like me,
I like red. Sophia smiled proudly. Yes,
like mother, like daughter. For a
moment, the room felt lighter and all
four of them smiled. But Rita's face
soon became serious again as she
continued the story. In Jess 3, our
classmate Winnie had a school mother
named Senior Regina who was the head
girl. The head girl was dating the head
boy and the head boy was Senior Edi.
Winnie wanted to feel powerful. She
wanted the head boy and head girl to be
her school mother and school [music]
father. So she wrote a letter to Senior
Edi asking him to be her school father.
Senior Edafi wrote back to her
explaining [music] that he already had a
school daughter in her class. Then he
gave the letter to Hazu to deliver to
Winnie. When Winnie discovered that Hazu
was actually Senior Edi's school
daughter. She became furious. She was
jealous. From that day, she looked for
every opportunity to humiliate Hazel.
The first time Hazel got her period, we
were in Jess 3. She had been looking
forward to it for a long time. But the
day it finally came, she was humiliated.
When Hazel stood up in the class, Winnie
was the first person to notice the
stain. Winnie dragged Hazel in front of
the class and turned her around. Then
she shouted, "Guys, look. Hazel is
stained with period blood." The entire
class burst into laughter. That was how
Hazelu herself realized that she has
started her period. She ran out of the
class crying. I was furious. I
confronted Winnie. Why would you do such
a thing? You are a girl. You are
supposed to protect her. Winnie simply
waved me off and told me to mind my
business. I did not do anything to you,
she said. I ignored her and ran to find
Hazel. She was crying uncontrollably. I
tried to console her. I told her that
having a period was a normal thing and
that no girl should feel ashamed about
it. But the damage had already been
done. From that day on, Hazel became
extremely cautious whenever she was on
her period. Finally, we passed Junior
Wasek and got to SS1. We were happy to
be seniors now. But in essay,
who had now graduated, rejected her and
chose Hazel as his school daughter
instead. Her jealousy did not fade. If
anything, it became worse. Winnie
started bullying Hazu openly. Sometimes
she would wait for Hazel at the back of
the girl's host and beat her up. Other
times when Hazel was passing by, Winnie
would stretch her leg so Hazel would
stumble and fall for the class to laugh.
Hazel had been bullied by seniors for so
long that she had become used to it. So
when the bullying started coming from
her own classmate she did not even see
anything wrong with it. The bullying
continued when we got to SS2. One day,
Winnie came into Hzu's dometry room and
took all of Hzu's small provisions. When
I came to visit Hesu letter, I found her
crying. She told me what Winnie had done
and how Winnie had been taking her
provisions every time since JS3. I was
furious. I shouted at Hazelu. Why are
you so weak? Why can't you stand up for
yourself? We are in SS2 now. How can you
allow your classmates bullying you like
you are in JSS1? Hazel cried even more.
Then she looked at me and said, "What do
you want me to do, Rita? I can't fight
her. If I do, I will be expelled." "Oh,
you can't fight her," I asked angrily.
"But she can bully you," Abby. Hazel
wiped her tears and said something that
shocked me. "Her father pays my school
fees. My parents work for her father.
He's a good man. He pays my school fees.
But his wife and daughter, they hate
me." At that moment, I finally
understood why my friend allowed this
bullying to continue. Hazel cried and
told me that she just wanted to get to
SS3, write our sec exam, and leave the
school. But I could not sit and watch my
friend suffer like that. The entire
class already lost respect for Hazel.
Even juniors disrespected her. They knew
Winnie, her own classmate, was bullying
her. So the next day, I went to the
principal's office. I reported Winnie. I
told him everything. I explained how
Winnie had been bullying Jesus since
Jess 3. The principal listened quietly.
When I finished talking, he asked me a
question. Did Winnie bully you? I said
no. Then he said something that shocked
me.
>> So what is your business?
>> So what is your business? The
principal's name was Principal Kalistos.
It was his responsibility to protect us,
but instead he protected the bully.
Winnie's father was a very rich man. He
always gave the principal a cash gift.
So there was no way the principal would
