Uh you can see, can't you, from uh front

0:02

page stories like the one in the eye

0:04

paper, this is there's a story been

0:06

planted from Angela Raina's camp. She

0:09

wants to be our next prime minister.

0:11

>> Oh, of course she does. Yes. And uh

0:14

opinion polls of Labour Party members

0:16

suggest that she's got a very good

0:18

chance of precisely that. Um, I mean,

0:23

I'm I'm bit frustrated because we

0:24

haven't had a a proper survey of of

0:27

Labour Party members

0:28

>> since February. Uh, but then, um, it was

0:32

it was Angela Raina 60%, Wes Streeting

0:36

40%. Um, and, uh, I think that's a bit

0:39

of a mountain for W Streeting to climb.

0:42

Well, that's right. I mean, we saw,

0:43

didn't we, yesterday Noah Hoffman uh,

0:46

writing for the spectator. He's a

0:48

political reporter saying that Wes

0:50

thinks he's got the numbers in the House

0:52

of Commons. You're not so sure.

0:54

>> No, he has got the numbers in the House

0:56

of Commons, but but MPs don't have the

0:58

final say. I This is where the Labour

1:01

Party went wrong in 1981.

1:04

Uh it it took the decision about its

1:06

leader out of the out of the sole hands

1:09

of MPs. The Conservative Party

1:11

unbelievably foolishly uh followed it in

1:13

in 1998. uh handed over the final

1:17

decision over a leader to the party

1:18

members and we saw led to Liz Trust we

1:20

saw where that led led led them I mean

1:23

the final disaster I mean that and that

1:25

was after Labour had had elected Jeremy

1:28

Corbyn

1:29

>> most definitely well of course all of

1:31

this presupposes that the prime minister

1:34

could fall in a week's time we'll be

1:36

dealing with the aftermath of those May

1:38

local elections is it a case of when not

1:41

if he goes in your view

1:43

>> well it always is Mark isn't

1:45

he's going to go at some point, but I

1:47

don't I don't think he's necessarily

1:49

going to go uh after these elections

1:51

precisely because uh MPs know how the

1:55

how the leadership election system works

1:57

and they they know that Angela Rener is

1:59

the most likely uh victor of a of a

2:02

leadership campaign. Uh and therefore

2:04

they're holding back. Uh I mean it only

2:06

takes 80 of them uh to to nominate her.

2:10

Uh and then Karma's finished. Uh but so

2:14

far those 80 have not materialized and

2:17

I'm not sure they're going to

2:18

materialize uh on Saturday the 8th of

2:20

May.

2:21

>> As the potential front runner of a

2:23

Labour leadership campaign, what's your

2:25

appraisal of Angela Raina's qualities as

2:28

a politician? John?

2:30

>> Well, personally, I I I think she's

2:32

fantastic. I think she's a she's a great

2:35

politician. and she's got a much better

2:37

feel for politics than uh than many of

2:40

her uh cabinet former cabinet colleagues

2:43

including the prime minister. But she

2:45

was not a success as as a minister. She

2:47

she hardly built any of those 1.5

2:49

million houses. Uh she virtually uh

2:52

crushed the private rented sector with

2:54

well-meaning but uh but

2:56

counterproductive regulation of tenants

2:59

rights. uh and she has made youth

3:02

unemployment worse by uh by loading on

3:05

employment regulation onto employers. Um

3:08

she's she's not a good uh choice as

3:11

prime minister. Uh although I think she

3:13

should be in government and of course if

3:16

she were to win a Labor leadership

3:17

election, she would be helped in that

3:21

ambition by the trade unions. And if she

3:23

gets into number 10, John, they would

3:26

want their pound of flesh.

3:28

Well, they would, but I don't think I

3:30

mean, yeah, that's that's not the

3:32

fundament my fundamental problem with

3:34

her. My my problem with her is that uh

3:37

she she seems to think that regulation

3:41

uh and uh loading burdens onto onto

3:44

business uh is the answer to every

3:46

problem. And I think that's that's the

3:48

wrong direction for for Labour to go on.

3:50

actually her instincts on many things

3:51

are are sound although I think she's

3:54

taken an opportun opportunistic uh

3:57

position attacking Shabban Mahmood's uh

4:00

immigration reforms.

4:01

>> Yeah. normally. I mean, in the past,

4:04

Angela Raina has been a socially

4:06

conservative uh left-winger. Um, very

4:10

slightly Brexity. Uh, she understands uh

4:13

why people in this country uh voted for

4:15

Brexit, but she uh she wants to be

4:18

leader and she knows that the Labour

4:20

Party members are incredibly liberal

4:22

when it comes to immigration and so

4:24

she's tilting towards that position and

4:25

that kind of opportunism is not what uh

4:28

I think the country needs as a prime

4:29

minister. So listening to what you're

4:32

saying, I think you're suggesting, John,

4:34

that she's a talented politician. The

4:37

problem, if she gets into number 10,

4:39

will be policy.

4:40

>> Yeah, absolutely. And I think I think

4:42

her policy her policies were wrong when

4:45

she was in government, and I suspect

4:46

they would be wrong as prime minister. I

4:48

hope I hope I'm wrong because um you

4:50

know, she's quite likely to be uh prime

4:52

minister. But uh uh on the other hand,

4:56

if K star holds on after the the local

5:00

elections uh then anything can happen

5:02

and West Streeting and and Shabbana

5:04

Marmud who I think would be much better

5:06

replacements for him uh might be able to

5:08

strengthen their position.

5:11

My endorsement of them is not going to

5:12

help.

5:12

>> No, probably probably and mine neither.

5:15

Even though Shabbana Mammud is an

5:16

impressive politician and I think she'd

5:18

be a better prime minister than

5:19

Starmmer, but it's probably not going to

5:21

happen because of where the party is at

5:24

the parliamentary party and the

5:25

membership. I mean what what I'm hearing

5:28

from you is that if Angela Raina becomes

5:30

prime minister, she will shift leftwards

5:33

and the international bond markets upon

5:35

whose large we rely to keep the lights

5:38

on, they will be none too happy. So it's

5:41

likely if she gets in, she'll have

5:42

problems from day one. Well, I would I

5:45

would hope that the opposite would

5:46

happen that actually because of her

5:47

left-wing reputation, she'd have space

5:49

to move in the other direction, but then

5:52

I read a really uh spine- chilling

5:56

stories about her uh wanting to appoint

5:58

Ed Milliband as as chancellor.

6:01

>> I think that would be an absolute

6:02

disaster for the country. Um

6:04

>> why do you say that?

6:06

>> Well, because his his instincts are

6:07

definitely uh wrong. um he's uh his his

6:11

pursuit of of net zero uh in the face of

6:15

uh of all the evidence. I mean, he he

6:17

simply cannot make the argument for um

6:20

for for renewables cutting uh

6:24

electricity prices when they're putting

6:26

electricity prices up. Uh and he just he

6:29

continually flies in the in the face of

6:31

facts. Uh I think I think he would be a

6:33

disaster. I'm not sure that Angela Raina

6:35

seriously wants to appoint him as as

6:37

chancellor, but uh it's not a risk that

6:39

this country can afford to take.

6:41

>> John, based upon this conversation and

6:43

your observation, is Star emerging as

6:46

the devil, you know?

6:49

>> Well, I was very surprised to see uh my

6:51

good friend Dan Hodges in the Daily Mail

6:54

today uh who's been absolutely vicious

6:57

about Karma for months and months and

7:00

saying he's completely finished and he

7:01

must go at once. uh he's suddenly he's

7:04

suddenly done a U-turn this morning

7:06

saying that if the alternative is Angela

7:08

Raina Kstama must stay. I I'm I'm of the

7:12

same view. I mean I don't think Karma

7:15

has been a successor prime minister but

7:16

if the alternative is Angela Raina then

7:19

he must stay. John, we always love

7:20

having you on the show. Look forward to

7:22

speaking soon. John Renol is the chief

7:25

political commentator at the independent

7:27

newspaper.
