Nick Nanos is here to break down his

0:02

latest numbers. He's the founder and

0:04

chief data scientist at Nanos Research.

0:06

Good morning, Nick. Good to see you.

0:08

>> Good to see you, too, Lauren.

0:09

>> So, Nick, over the last month, we've

0:11

seen prices rising, most notably at the

0:14

gas pumps. What are you seeing in terms

0:16

of how that's impacting the top concerns

0:19

of Canadian voters right now?

0:21

>> Lauren, we are seeing dark economic

0:24

clouds gathering when we look right

0:27

across the board. You know, you were

0:28

asking about the top issues of concern.

0:30

Check it out. In the last four weeks,

0:32

jobs in the economy has jumped six

0:35

percentage points as the top national

0:38

issue of concern. It's at around 23%

0:41

followed by concern about Trump in the

0:43

US at 12, inflation at 11, healthcare at

0:46

8, immigration at five, and uh peace at

0:48

around four. But you know, the big

0:50

takeaway here is that is a significant

0:52

increase. It speaks to the pressure that

0:55

Canadians are under to pay for the

0:56

groceries. and now to pay for the gas.

0:59

>> So obviously the economy is a top issue

1:03

here. What are you seeing in terms of

1:04

how Canadians are feeling about the

1:06

economy overall?

1:08

>> They're starting to feel quite dower

1:11

about the future prospects for how

1:13

strong or weak the Canadian economy

1:15

might be in the next 6 months. And our

1:17

Bloomberg Nano tracking, we ask

1:18

Canadians whether they think the economy

1:20

will get stronger or weaker in the next

1:21

6 months. You know, you can see only 18

1:25

or 19% of Canadians believe that the

1:27

economy will get stronger. That's down

1:29

eight points. But check out the number

1:31

for weaker. The proportion of Canadians

1:33

that believe the economy will get weaker

1:35

in the next 6 months is at 49%. One out

1:38

of every two Canadians. That's jumped 12

1:41

percentage points just in the last four

1:44

weeks. And you know what it shows is the

1:46

knock-on effect of what I'll say the

1:48

increasing price of gas, the war in

1:51

Iran, people worried about trade with

1:53

Donald Trump and the US and all those

1:55

things rolling up into Canadians

1:57

believing or thinking that the economy

2:00

is more likely to get weaker than

2:01

stronger in the next 6 months.

2:02

>> All right. Yeah, not a lot of confidence

2:04

there in terms of the economy. Now,

2:06

Nick, you also looked at those economic

2:08

concerns at a micro level. So, how are

2:11

Canadians feeling about their own bank

2:13

accounts? Yeah, when we pivot from the

2:16

big picture economy to personal

2:18

finances, it's actually still

2:21

significantly negative. When we ask

2:23

Canadians whether their personal

2:24

finances are better or worse off, this

2:26

would be compared to a year ago. Four

2:28

out of every 10 Canadians report that

2:30

their personal finances are worse off.

2:32

That's up five points in the last four

2:34

weeks. And you can see, Lauren, by a

2:36

factor of 2 and a half to one, people

2:39

are more likely to report that their

2:40

personal finances are worse rather than

2:43

better off. And uh just speaks to the

2:45

pressure that people are under.

2:47

>> Nick, before I let you go, I do want to

2:49

get your thoughts on a story we're

2:50

following today. Bi-elections happening

2:52

right now, specifically in Terabon,

2:55

where advanced voting has already

2:57

started. What is your read on how that

2:59

should play out?

3:01

Well, Tabon was a coin toss and I think

3:03

it's still going to be a close race this

3:05

time. The big question is will the

3:08

voters in Tabon when they're thinking

3:10

about how they're going to cast their

3:11

ballot think about [snorts] whether they

3:14

want the carne government to have a

3:16

majority or not because it could be one

3:18

of the critical writings that could

3:19

determine how strong or weak the can the

3:22

carne government could be in the coming

3:23

months. But the thing is Lauren this

3:26

also includes voter turnout. It includes

3:28

organization. It includes the local

3:30

candidates and uh you know this was won

3:33

by one vote last time and uh I I'm

3:37

thinking it'll probably be more than one

3:38

vote because that was more that was very

3:40

exceptional. But you know the thing is

3:42

is that I think at this point in time

3:44

it's too early to tell the turnout at

3:46

these advanced polls will be the first

3:49

indicator as to how engaged voters in

3:51

Terabon might be. That's one of the

3:53

things that I'm going to watch out for.

3:55

But there's still another week left

3:57

before voters cast their ballot in that

4:00

particular bi-election.

4:01

>> All right, we will certainly be watching

4:03

as well. Nick, thank you so much for

4:04

your time.

4:05

>> Take it easy. That is Nick Nanos, the

4:07

founder and chief data scientist at

4:09

Nanos Research.
