BREAKING: Republicans Win Special Election - Massive Defeat For Hakeem Jeffries

Hey ladies and gentlemen, this is

Carmine Sabia for Explain America. A

special election has been called and

it's great news for Republicans, but

there's some bad news, too. Before we

Republicans, I think, are are getting

closer to being in the driver's seat

when it comes to the midterm elections.

And you have last night in Florida,

really interesting case. So you have

Hillary Holly who comes in and she wins.

She wins her special elections. She's

Republican. She takes the seat. Hakee

Jeff obviously irritated by this

Republican celebrating. At the same time

though,

you have the district where Mara Lago is

and that flips Democrat for the first

time in a long time. Now you got a

Democrat representative there and you're

heading into the midterm. So this both

of these seats are going to be up for

election again in November. So this

presents a pretty big quandry

and Republicans,

you know, how do you look at it, right?

You got the one hand, you win. On the

other hand though, right in Trump's

county, you lose.

It's a scary harbinger. But I will say

this, a lot of attention is paid to

midterm elections and a lot of attention

is paid to the special elections that

come before them. In both cases,

not that many people vote. Now, we need

to get a higher turnout for the

midterms, but in special elections,

you're talking about a fraction of a

fraction of people that vote. And I

think when Trump, the seat in Palm Beach

County comes up again, I think that will

flip back Republican when you get a lot

more voters. I want you to watch this

Well, many communities went to the polls

today for a special election. There was

one in Hillsboro County and another in

Pole County. We'll start with the upset

in the election in western Hillsboro

County for Senate District 14. This is a

seat that opened after Jay Collins was

appointed to be the Lieutenant Governor.

Democrat Brian Nathan pulled off an

upset against Republican Josie Tomco and

it was a close one. In fact, we will

learn later this week whether there will

have to be a recount. Florida law calls

for machine recounts when the final

results are within a half percentage

point. And this is exact. The supervisor

of elections still has to verify 150

signatures. Nathan is a Navy veteran, a

union organizer who knew this district

was an uphill battle for any Democrat,

but he's excited to represent the

district in Tallahassee.

>> I think indicative of what we're going

to see across the state. We flipped the

seat here up in Hillsboro County. House

District 87 also flipped. I think this

is going to be what we see going forth

across the state of Florida. Look how

close the numbers were. So, I think this

is just going to be the pattern we're

going to see for the rest of the state

all the way from now through November.

>> In PK County, there was the special

election for state house district 51,

which was vacated by Josie Tomco, who

was running in Hillsboro County. The

district covers northern PK County.

Republican Hillary Holly defeated

Democrat Edwin Perez.

>> Well, new at 10, a big country concert's

causing controversy in St. Pete Beach.

The concert six weeks away. Some city
