0:00

Hello everyone, welcome back. Let's get

0:01

right into the story for today. Doug

0:03

Ford, the premier of Ontario, has just

0:05

given a speech where he urged all

0:07

Canadians to boycott Chinese EVs. And in

0:11

this video, I'm going to explain to you

0:12

how that's a very simple-minded, stupid

0:14

position to have. And I think it's just

0:16

driven by politics. And I say that

0:18

because I don't think that Doug Ford is

0:20

stupid enough to not really understand

0:22

how the auto industry works in his own

0:24

province. But I'll let you be the judge

0:26

of that. you leave your comments in the

0:27

comment section and I'm going to explain

0:29

why this is just a really dumb position

0:31

without using inflammatory rhetoric or

0:33

just shouting at the clouds. I'm going

0:35

to give you some facts and basically

0:37

Doug Ford's position and I'll almost

0:39

quote him word for word here. Let me

0:40

paraphrase. He says that these EVs from

0:43

China will be roving surveillance

0:46

vehicles, spy vehicles in amongst us,

0:49

spying on us and allowing China to gain

0:51

a foothold selling their vehicles in

0:54

Canada will hurt Canadian auto workers

0:57

and will really hurt the Canadian auto

0:59

industry and eventually will be flooded

1:01

by these vehicles and the Chinese will

1:03

take over. But Doug, you're the premier

1:05

of Ontario and I assume you've probably

1:07

spent some time in Toronto, Ontario's

1:10

biggest city. And if you have, have you

1:12

ever taken a ride in one of these? Well,

1:14

probably not because you get driven

1:16

around in a large Ford. But this is a

1:20

TTC bus. It's the electric bus. Guess

1:24

who makes this bus? Well, that would be

1:26

BYD, who recently opened its first plant

1:29

in Canada. BYD opens first Canadian bus

1:33

assembly plant. The 45,000q foot

1:36

facility in New Market, Ontario is the

1:39

first electric bus plant to open in

1:41

Ontario in a generation. While the New

1:44

Market facility is BYD's first Canadian

1:46

assembly plant, the company is already

1:49

active in the Canadian market with buses

1:51

on order or in operation in Toronto,

1:53

Victoria, Longale, St. Albert, and Grand

1:56

Prairie. The new plant will first focus

1:58

on assembling buses for the Toronto

2:01

Transit Commission, the TTC, the

2:03

company's largest transit operator. The

2:06

agency will receive 10 pure electric

2:08

buses with an option for 30 more. Should

2:10

the people in Ontario boycott riding on

2:12

the TTC electric buses? Are those buses

2:15

spying on us? I can't believe that Doug

2:17

Ford does not know that the largest

2:19

Chinese EV manufacturer, the largest EV

2:23

manufacturer in the world now, has an

2:25

assembly plant in his own province. And

2:27

it's not a stretch that this company

2:29

when they start selling cars into our

2:32

market, if those cars gain demand, if

2:35

consumers demand those, it's not a

2:37

stretch that they might expand their

2:39

operations. may be expanding that

2:41

particular plant or building additional

2:43

manufacturing plants in Ontario if the

2:46

demand is high enough in our country.

2:48

There's workers in Ontario that as we

2:50

speak have jobs working for the company

2:53

that you're telling your citizens to

2:55

boycott right now. Now, I know it's a

2:56

lot easier to just be negative, to

2:59

identify an enemy and try and rally your

3:01

support being the guy that's going to

3:03

fight the enemy. Let me take a different

3:05

approach here. Picture it behind me. Do

3:07

do you recognize what this is? This was

3:09

one of the first Hondas that was sold in

3:12

Canada in 1973.

3:14

Comes from Japan. And when these cars

3:17

first arrived in Canada and started

3:19

driving in our streets, the uh reaction

3:22

was exactly the same. What are these

3:24

cars doing here? These tiny cars,

3:26

they're terrible. They're Japanese. Why

3:29

are we letting the Japanese sell cars in

3:31

our Canadian market? You let them get a

3:33

tow hold in our market and they're going

3:35

to destroy our industry. And why are we

3:37

buying cars from Japan? We just had a

3:39

war versus Japan. We had to defeat them.

3:41

In 1945, World War II ended. In 1973,

3:45

these cars showed up. Less than 30 years

3:47

later, people were saying, "Why should

3:49

we support the enemy? We had to fight

3:51

them. And now we're going to let them

3:53

take over our automobile market. They

3:55

have cheap labor over there, and they're

3:56

making these tiny little cars, and

3:57

they're going to flood our market."

3:59

Let's fast forward from 1973 to 2026.

4:03

Honda Civic, Canada's bestselling car.

4:06

This is from the Honda Canada website.

4:09

Honda as well as Toyota being one of the

4:11

top selling car companies in Canada. And

4:14

not just selling in Canada,

4:16

manufacturing in Canada, employing tens

4:19

of thousands of workers in Ontario. It's

4:23

the same story. And you can go back and

4:24

find clips from the 1970s, politicians

4:27

saying, "Don't buy those Hondas. Boycott

4:30

those Japanese cars. they're going to

4:32

ruin our North American auto industry.

4:34

Now, it's important to know that

4:35

pre2024,

4:38

before Canada implemented the 100%

4:40

tariffs on the import of Chinese EVs,

4:43

and we did that to follow the United

4:45

States, when then President Joe Biden

4:47

put 100% tariffs on imports of Chinese

4:50

EVs. We followed suit. Before that

4:53

happened, we were already buying lots of

4:56

EVs manufactured in China. It just

4:59

happened that all of them were Teslas

5:01

because Tesla is a company that wants to

5:03

sell its product globally and their

5:05

largest manufacturing facility is in

5:07

China. But when we imposed those 100%

5:10

tariffs, we were no longer able to buy

5:11

Teslas made in China without paying a

5:14

100% tariff. So after we put those

5:16

tariffs in place, Tesla just shipped

5:18

their vehicles from their factories in

5:21

Germany to Canada. So now we've removed

5:23

these 100% tariffs and we're back to the

5:25

way it was in 2023 and we've put a cap

5:28

on the amount of vehicles that we can

5:30

import from China. The cap is 49,000.

5:33

And of those 49,000, half of those have

5:36

to be vehicles which will be priced less

5:39

than $35,000

5:41

sales price. So now going forward, half

5:43

of those 49,000 EVs that we can buy from

5:46

China now with a much lower tariff might

5:49

end up being Teslas, but half of them,

5:52

what is it? 24,500 of them must be

5:55

priced less than $35,000. There's no

5:58

other option in Canada for a consumer to

6:00

buy pretty much any car under $35,000,

6:04

let alone an EV. There's no EV

6:07

replacement. And what Doug Ford is

6:09

suggesting to uh boycott Chinese EVs,

6:13

there's no threat from those 24,500

6:17

Chinese EVs priced under $35,000

6:21

um on vehicles that we manufacture in

6:23

Canada. We don't manufacture those here.

6:26

We manufacture mainly larger cars and

6:28

SUVs. So really, Doug, what you should

6:31

be saying, you should be saying boycott

6:33

US vehicles. boycott vehicles made in

6:36

the United States and instead buy

6:38

vehicles that are made in Ontario. I

6:40

know that Doug Ford before the election

6:41

was a huge supporter of the now

6:44

president of the United States and was

6:45

shocked when that president took over

6:48

and immediately took aim on Canada and

6:50

now he's targeting Canada's auto

6:52

industry as his number one target to

6:54

destroy to try and get manufacturing to

6:58

go back to the United States. I know

6:59

Doug was surprised about that. So, he

7:01

may not want to come out and say, "Let's

7:03

boycott US vehicles." If you want a

7:05

softer tone, say, "Let's buy vehicles

7:08

made in Ontario instead of the United

7:10

States. Choose Canada. I choose Canada.

7:14

Let's do that." So, if you live in

7:15

Ontario and you want to buy an SUV

7:17

because you need something a little

7:19

larger, something with some space.

7:21

You're probably not going to be

7:22

interested in a small 35,000 Chinese EV.

7:26

You might be interested in something

7:27

like this, a Ford Escape. The Ford

7:29

Escape is made at Ford's Louisville

7:31

assembly plant in Louisville, Kentucky.

7:34

Another choice that you would have, a

7:35

vehicle that competes against the Ford

7:37

Escape, is uh pictured here, the Toyota

7:40

RAV 4. The Toyota RAV 4s are primarily

7:43

manufactured in Canada, Woodstock, and

7:46

Cambridge, Ontario. So Doug, if you want

7:48

to be the champion for the auto industry

7:50

in your province, why don't you tell

7:53

your citizens to make smart decisions

7:56

and buy vehicles that are made in

7:58

Ontario and publish the list of vehicles

8:01

that are made in your province and urge

8:03

consumers to choose those instead of

8:05

other vehicles? Why Why are you

8:07

expending energy picking a fight with a

8:10

Chinese company? And Doug, don't you

8:12

understand that this Chinese company is

8:13

not our enemy? This Chinese company

8:16

wants to sell their product here and

8:18

potentially manufacture in our country.

8:20

The enemy is the United States. They're

8:23

the ones that want to destroy our

8:25

industry. Their president has made it

8:27

abundantly clear over and over and over

8:29

again that he doesn't want his country

8:32

importing cars from Canada. He wants to

8:35

destroy our industry. And this is one

8:38

thing that again, I'm sure Doug Ford

8:40

knows this, but he's acting like he

8:43

doesn't. Canada is not an exporter of

8:46

vehicles. We are not a net exporter. We

8:49

are a net importer of vehicles. Does

8:51

that sound strange to some of you? Uh

8:53

because I I know that Canadians always

8:55

we always underestimate ourselves. We

8:57

think, well, we're a small market. Uh

8:59

you know, we can't really make a

9:00

difference. Canada is just a little

9:02

country. No, we're not. We're one of the

9:04

largest consumers of automobiles in the

9:07

world. We're a net importer. Let me show

9:10

you this chart that I've used previously

9:12

in some of my videos. And it shows

9:15

country by country the value of

9:17

exported, value of imported and the

9:19

trade balance in thousands of US dollars

9:22

of vehicle and and and all car parts and

9:26

everything associated with uh the

9:27

automobile industry country by country.

9:30

And look at the third column here. This

9:32

is the trade balance. You can see that

9:34

Germany and China and Japan are the

9:38

three automotive exporting superpowers

9:42

on earth. And if you look at what these

9:43

numbers mean, Japan being the perfect

9:45

example, Japan exports $151 billion

9:50

worth of automobiles and automobile

9:52

parts per year exports and only imports

9:56

$23 billion worth. They have a massive

9:59

trade surplus because Japan exports cars

10:04

and they don't import very many. The

10:05

United States is the opposite. They're

10:07

the largest importer of vehicles. They

10:10

export quite a bit and they're a large

10:11

economy. They export 144 billion worth,

10:15

almost all of that to Canada and Mexico,

10:19

but they import much more than that.

10:21

Almost 400 billion worth, giving them a

10:24

massive trade deficit in the auto

10:27

industry. Canada, it may surprise you,

10:29

our auto industry exports 58 billion

10:32

worth per year. Most of that, almost all

10:36

of that going to the United States, but

10:38

we import more than that. We import $90

10:42

billion worth of automobile and parts,

10:44

giving us a trade deficit in the

10:46

automobile industry. The United States

10:48

wants to take this $ 58 billion worth of

10:52

exports that we now have. They want to

10:55

manufacture these in their own country

10:57

by destroying our automobile business.

11:00

So this $ 58 billion almost all of which

11:03

goes to the United States, they want to

11:05

reduce their imports by that amount so

11:08

that their trade balance is less

11:10

negative. That's why they're attacking

11:13

our industry. So it would make much more

11:15

sense and have much more of an impact,

11:17

Doug, if we could convince Canadians to

11:20

switch their decisions in the following

11:22

way. buy a car that's manufactured in

11:25

Canada instead of a car that's

11:27

manufactured in the United States

11:30

because we are a net importer. Let's

11:32

stop importing their vehicles, the ones

11:35

that are made there. Let's buy a car

11:38

that's manufactured in Canada. That'll

11:40

increase demand for those vehicles that

11:42

are manufactured in Canada. That will

11:44

have those manufacturers expand their

11:48

production in Canada to supply that

11:50

demand. And if part of that demand uh

11:53

ends up being some lowerc cost EVs,

11:56

then that's great. Then we can have

11:58

another car manufacturer, possibly BYD,

12:02

expand their facilities in Canada and

12:05

create more jobs. If we buy more of our

12:08

own vehicles, we'll have to manufacture

12:10

more and that will grow our auto

12:12

industry and that'll create more jobs.

12:14

And Doug, your constant insults and

12:17

beratement of the Chinese, a country

12:20

that when they negotiate is so focused

12:22

on uh respect and not being pushed

12:24

around and not being ridiculed. Um they

12:27

don't need spy vehicles. They don't need

12:29

electric spy vehicles to know what

12:31

you're saying. You're on television

12:32

saying these things. And when you say

12:34

these things, the Chinese, I guarantee

12:37

can hear you and are listening to you.

12:40

And I wouldn't be surprised if you've

12:41

already uh done your province a

12:44

disservice because if if BYD eventually

12:46

does decide to uh increase manufacturing

12:49

in Canada, it's a possibility just out

12:52

of being disrespected that they may set

12:54

up their facility say in Vancouver,

12:56

which would be a perfect location if

12:58

they're going to import a lot of their

13:00

uh parts from overseas across the

13:02

Pacific or possibly in Quebec. So Doug,

13:06

you're picking a fight with the wrong

13:07

country. I I know you want to appear

13:09

strong and you want to like be fighting,

13:12

you know, to be Captain Canada and be

13:14

out there swinging. Uh, but I think he

13:17

must understand how our automobile

13:19

industry works. He must understand all

13:21

the things that I've mentioned this in

13:22

this video. But I think it would just

13:26

not be popular for a conservative uh

13:29

politician to accept this without push

13:32

back. And it would be very unpopular for

13:35

a conservative politician to call out

13:38

the United States and and call for a

13:39

boycott on their vehicles to be anti- uh

13:43

American and anti- bombastic buffoon

13:47

leader down south. It's sad, but uh most

13:51

of the people that think that the

13:53

president of the United States is doing

13:54

a good job or most uh Canadians that are

13:57

very pro-American at this point with all

13:59

that's going on sit as conservative

14:03

voters, not progressive conservative

14:06

voters. It's that um core right-wing

14:09

base, especially in Alberta, and I'm

14:11

sure there's some in Ontario. And you'll

14:13

see the uh leader of the opposition,

14:14

Pierre Polyv, is also kind calling these

14:17

things spy vehicles and this is a

14:19

terrible deal and China's going to take

14:20

over our industry, scream at the at the

14:23

clouds. Everything's broken and

14:25

everything's terrible because um they're

14:28

catering to their voters and and this is

14:30

just a sad thing to do. Doug, you have

14:32

to set this aside. uh stop playing

14:36

politics and start working with the

14:40

prime minister, which you have been uh

14:42

very well up till now, and instead of

14:46

attacking uh the Chinese and saying to

14:49

boycott them, what what you should be

14:50

doing now is engaging in discussions

14:53

with the very company that's likely to

14:55

set up manufacturing and encourage them

14:57

to do it in your province. There's

14:58

already a manufacturing facility in New

15:01

Market that you have representatives of

15:03

BYD North America here in Toronto that

15:06

you could go talk to. Invite them to

15:09

meetings, start negotiations now. If if

15:12

you said in the past, Doug Ford said in

15:13

the past, if they're interested in

15:15

building their cars here, let's talk.

15:17

Well, Doug,

15:19

go talk. The the ball's in your court

15:21

now, you should start talking to them.

15:23

You should accelerate this, right? you

15:25

should be having meetings with the the

15:27

officials from that company and working

15:30

out a deal to get them to start

15:32

manufacturing sooner rather than later.

15:34

Grow your business instead of picking

15:36

fights all the time. And I find it so

15:38

ironic. Let me kind of close with this

15:40

because uh the United States imposed

15:42

tariffs on Canada, specifically our auto

15:45

industry, attacking our auto industry.

15:47

And Doug Ford was the guy that ran the

15:50

ad in the United States using their

15:52

former president, Ronald Reagan, the ad

15:55

explaining why tariffs were terrible.

15:59

Message brought to you by the province

16:01

of Ontario, running it in the in the

16:03

United States, trying to convince the

16:05

current administration that tariffs are

16:07

a bad idea. What are you doing attacking

16:09

us? And now that same guy is saying,

16:11

"Keep the tariffs on China. keep those

16:14

tariffs on those Chinese EV imports.

16:17

Maybe China should run an ad in Ontario.

16:19

Run the same ad with Ronald Reagan, who

16:21

Doug Ford respects, and just change the

16:24

ending of the ad and say, "Message

16:26

brought to you by the government of

16:28

China." Run that ad in Ontario during

16:31

the Stanley Cup finals. Doug, I think

16:32

you missed the whole point here, but I'm

16:34

interested in your comments in the

16:35

comments section. Let me know what your

16:37

things without inflammatory rhetoric.
