0:00

another day another fun story about

0:02

Tesla and that's what we're going to

0:04

talk about today not just are we going

0:06

to talk about the fun story and The

0:09

Intercept leaked footage on Tesla but

0:11

we're also going to talk production

0:13

numbers because there's a big change and

0:15

I don't know why my accent is changing

0:17

but I do know that it's another day

0:19

which means you need another reminder to

0:20

check out the programs on building your

0:21

wealth down below because nobody else

0:23

does the fundamental analysis live

0:24

streams that we do on YouTube at least

0:28

nobody that I know anyway let's get

0:31

started with the video so the first fun

0:33

story of the day regarding Tesla has to

0:35

do with the following surveillance

0:37

footage obtained by The Intercept of a

0:41

Tesla abruptly stopping on the Bay

0:43

Bridge resulting in an eight vehicle

0:46

crash that injured nine people including

0:48

a two-year-old child just hours after

0:50

Elon Musk announced the new Full

0:52

self-driving wide release for the beta

0:55

there's the Tesla you can actually see

0:57

that lane change and then the first rear

0:59

end and then then the second one stops

1:01

and then a pile up occurs right here

1:03

we'll go ahead and play that again just

1:05

so you can see it here it looks like we

1:06

get the Tesla coming in lane change

1:08

right here and all of a sudden a

1:11

Slowdown

1:12

uh and and a stop here and then of

1:15

course uh a pile of wreckage thereafter

1:17

which quite interesting you could see

1:19

the driver is is clearly not

1:20

incapacitated because well he's getting

1:22

out of the vehicle this is a 77 year old

1:24

uh driver who indicated that he had the

1:27

vehicle set to full self-driving we

1:29

don't actually have any kind of data

1:31

dump from Tesla yet on whether or not

1:33

that was true but let's talk about

1:35

Phantom breaking because I can finally

1:37

say I have Tesla full self-driving and I

1:41

too have experienced the Tesla breaking

1:43

at odd times especially in uh like near

1:47

edges I've noticed like when you're near

1:49

sort of a curb to a plaza or maybe like

1:51

a wall or a boundary and usually if

1:54

you're paying attention what you do is a

1:56

Tesla driver is you hit the gas you're

1:59

supposed to be paying attention at least

2:01

and anytime I've seen this happen I've

2:03

reacted before the Tesla has slowed down

2:05

any more than like two or three miles an

2:06

hour it's not like it Slams on the

2:08

brakes it's usually just it it's more of

2:10

like a Tesla foot off the gas thing that

2:12

happens and then the regen breaking kind

2:14

of slows you down and that's the moment

2:16

where you're supposed to hit the gas and

2:18

kind of accelerate which clearly doesn't

2:20

happen in this video so there are two

2:24

potential scenarios here in my opinion

2:25

uh number one either full self-driving

2:28

wasn't active and I don't know maybe the

2:31

guy made a mistake here clearly okay

2:33

that's that would be scenario number one

2:35

if autopilot was active and this

2:39

accident occurred obviously we're gonna

2:41

get the crazy fud stories all over about

2:44

how unsafe it is and how the government

2:46

needs to regulate these vehicles despite

2:48

the fact that Teslas are some of the

2:49

safest vehicles on the road even as

2:52

measured by The Institute for Highway

2:53

Safety which you know generally

2:55

government bodies and government

2:56

Associated bodies aren't too fond of

2:58

Teslas anyway yeah Teslas are still

3:00

ranking in some of the highest safety

3:01

levels in the world for crash tests on

3:04

top of that you have a four-time fewer

3:07

accident rate for vehicles with

3:08

autopilot enabled but you do get people

3:11

with autopilot on and autopilot

3:12

sometimes does some funny things and you

3:14

got to pay attention I just pulled out

3:16

of a super charging spot enabled

3:17

autopilot and it may have you know kind

3:21

of cut the corner a little sharp and

3:22

ridden over the curb and I'm like damn I

3:24

should have known better you know like

3:26

I'm not blaming the car it's it's a beta

3:28

it's it's not perfect right now I'm not

3:31

just trying to fully defend Tesla here I

3:33

think Phantom breaking is really weird I

3:35

I don't know why it happens I think uh

3:37

the Algos obviously still have learning

3:39

to do and this is why they're on a Beta

3:41

release but I also realized that the

3:44

Tesla can do some funny things and so

3:46

I'm ready uh to to accelerate when it

3:50

does those funny things so that clearly

3:52

did not happen in this case instead the

3:54

driver allowed the vehicle to come to a

3:55

complete stop which is insane in my

3:58

opinion I I have driven a Tesla and

4:00

driven autopilot in Tesla since uh

4:04

2017 and I've never let the vehicle on

4:07

essentially a Motorway you know 55 mile

4:09

an hour Motorway here I've never let the

4:11

vehicle just come to a complete

4:13

stop it's just a little odd Lane change

4:16

and just completes I I don't know

4:20

personally I don't get it uh but

4:22

whatever so that's the Tesla fudge story

4:25

that's getting a lot of views right now

4:26

Tesla haters are having a field day

4:28

about it but at the same time we're

4:30

getting news that finally Tesla might

4:33

actually be looking at increasing

4:34

production the way I projected Tesla

4:37

wood in 2022. unfortunately I made the

4:42

projections in about April of 2022 and I

4:44

suggested and indicated that Tesla's

4:46

probably going to figure out their

4:48

manufacturing model with Berlin and

4:51

Texas and then unlock what we call copy

4:54

and paste now that overly simplifies

4:57

what Tesla would actually do but

4:59

basically the copy and paste idea is you

5:02

take all of the experience you have of

5:04

building these new grand gigafactories

5:06

Berlin and Austin and you multiply that

5:09

around the world we recently heard that

5:11

Tesla is considering their expansion

5:12

into to North East Mexico just a few

5:16

hours away from Giga Texas and could be

5:18

the site of a new low-cost a Tesla

5:21

vehicle that could be produced by Tesla

5:23

especially since the average hourly wage

5:25

in Northeast Mexico is only about three

5:28

dollars and forty cents per hour now I

5:30

know initially a lot of people think oh

5:32

my gosh that's terrible Tesla's going to

5:34

take advantage of cheap labor when the

5:36

reality is if Tesla moves into this

5:38

Automotive area where existing Legacy

5:41

auto manufacturers like Mercedes BMW 4gm

5:44

are already using that labor when Tesla

5:47

comes to the area you'll actually

5:48

probably see wages increase to the

5:51

benefit of locals in that area but

5:53

generally people who complain on the

5:55

internet don't have economic backgrounds

5:57

and they don't like to think that way

5:58

but anyway this is a good thing but on

6:01

top of that now we have reports that

6:04

Tesla is considering not only multiple

6:06

different expansions but is also

6:09

potentially looking at a new plant in

6:13

Indonesia now this is actually

6:15

phenomenal Tesla is seeking to is close

6:18

to sealing a preliminary deal to set up

6:20

a factory in Indonesia now remember a

6:23

lot of people are moving they're

6:24

manufacturing out of China not only

6:27

because of the uh unclear sort of

6:29

political regime that you can often have

6:31

as we've realized around covet policies

6:33

and forced lockdown policies but also

6:36

let's be real here labor is cheaper now

6:39

in places like Indonesia and India how

6:42

Wild is that you think labor is cheap in

6:44

China wait until you go to some of these

6:46

other countries is actually quite

6:47

remarkable and again that is to the

6:49

benefit of locals in that country you're

6:51

ways raising wages across the world but

6:53

anyway uh this this area is great for

6:56

key battery materials and the plant

6:58

could potentially produce one million

6:59

vehicles per year in line with Tesla's

7:01

Ambitions really to to exceed their

7:04

Global uh capacity in my opinion this by

7:06

the way we start getting talks about new

7:08

plants Indonesia Mexico or whatever it's

7:11

a sign that Tesla's looking past the

7:13

near-term flood demand dynamics of of

7:17

being in a recession right which has

7:19

actually been hurting a lot of people's

7:21

wealth right stocks down real estate

7:22

falling uh the the disaster of a

7:25

depression that's probably happening in

7:26

China you've got a huge decline in

7:28

wealth across the world and

7:30

unfortunately that is that is not just

7:32

hitting uh poorer individuals but it's

7:35

also hitting wealthier people and

7:37

interestingly it might actually be

7:39

hurting wealthier people more because

7:41

where we're seeing the biggest pay bumps

7:43

or in Blue Collar work right now where

7:44

you're seeing the most layoffs in White

7:46

Collar work pretty wild uh and that

7:48

could affect Tesla Demand right now

7:50

those We Believe are short-term

7:52

catalysts right like for example in

7:54

Singapore we have reports that Tesla is

7:57

continuing to uh offer discounts five

8:00

thousand dollar discounts for people who

8:01

trade in an existing ice vehicle uh

8:04

which is interesting because I wonder

8:05

what Tesla's going to do with a used

8:06

inventory which is like in my opinion

8:08

catching a falling knife because used

8:09

vehicle prices are plummeting also

8:11

offering a five thousand dollar credit

8:13

to help people cover the cost of the

8:15

certificate needed to operate a vehicle

8:17

in Singapore they're also now offering

8:20

free wall connectors to free uh or to

8:22

batteries these are all things that you

8:25

know unless input costs really start

8:26

plummeting yeah Tesla's margins going to

8:29

get squeezed and uh you know Tesla is

8:32

thinking about expanding at the same

8:34

time which then potentially reduces free

8:36

cash flow but it's interesting because

8:39

if Tesla really is double and tripling

8:41

down on these capacity expansions it

8:44

makes you think that Tesla must clearly

8:46

have a path for so much demand in the

8:49

future or new pricing strategies that

8:52

are going to induce that new demand in

8:54

the future in order to keep these

8:55

factories busy especially if a lower

8:57

cost Tesla comes out and that cyber

8:59

truck finally comes which who knows when

9:01

that's coming although the Giga press

9:02

was just delivered to uh Giga Austin

9:05

where the Cyber truck is expected to be

9:06

built but anyway the discussions include

9:09

plans around multiple facilities in the

9:11

country serving different functions

9:12

across the production and supply chain a

9:14

deal hasn't been signed and the

9:16

agreement could fall through the people

9:17

I said not asking not to be identified

9:20

Indonesia has long courted Tesla last

9:22

year striking a 5 billion dollar nickel

9:24

Supply agreement with the car maker in

9:26

an interview in August with Bloomberg

9:28

News uh someone an individual here said

9:31

that the country wants Tesla to make

9:32

electric cars there not just batteries

9:35

and is willing to take the time to

9:37

convince Mr musk to see Indonesia as

9:39

More Than Just A supplier of resources

9:41

that's a fancy way of saying we will

9:44

give you incentives I don't know what's

9:46

with the German accent today I'm sorry

9:48

but anyway uh musk Representatives

9:50

didn't immediately respond to requests

9:52

for comments an Indonesian Factory would

9:54

be Tesla's third outside its Home Market

9:56

in the U.S joining Shanghai and Berlin

9:59

Indonesia offers a gateway to the

10:01

southeast's 675 million customers it's a

10:05

tough market for Global automakers given

10:07

affordable cars usually priced below 20

10:09

000 making up the bulk of sales and this

10:12

is the thing where you've got a fight

10:13

between Tesla and byd right now right

10:16

byd look i i people get mad at me when I

10:20

say this but it's just it's just the

10:22

truth okay byd brings

10:25

1.45 of their revenue down to net okay

10:30

think about that you make a hundred

10:32

dollars of Revenue at byd how much do

10:34

you bring down to the net

10:37

1.45 how much does Tesla bring down to

10:41

the net without U.S electric vehicle

10:44

credits they bring

10:47

fourteen dollars and fifty cents to the

10:49

bottom one that's 10x byd it's

10:51

remarkable it's absolutely remarkable

10:54

now of course a lot of talk about byd in

10:59

fact let's go ahead and take a look at

11:00

this Bloomberg opinion piece you can get

11:02

these at bloomberg.com by the way in

11:04

case you're wondering where they're from

11:04

just bloomberg.com all electric vehicles

11:07

are not the same nor other companies

11:08

that make them the favorite pair these

11:10

days is Tesla versus byd so let's

11:13

actually compare a little bit let's

11:14

start with the basics in December byd

11:17

sold 235 000 vehicles in China of those

11:20

basically half of them were plug-in

11:22

hybrids and the rest were battery

11:23

electric vehicles hybrids by the way

11:25

very expensive right low margin you've

11:28

got two basically power trains going

11:30

into the vehicle it's pricey it's

11:32

expensive and this is probably why their

11:34

margin just isn't that great which going

11:35

into a recessionary Time

11:37

now wonderful uh byd sold over 900 000

11:41

of each type of vehicle in 2022 Tesla

11:44

made a 55k in China last month with a

11:47

total of 700k for the year essentially

11:50

they compete in what uh investors would

11:52

call product segment a slice of what the

11:54

company does here's the thing hybrids

11:56

and byds run on fundamentally different

11:58

Technologies and powertrains the cost of

12:01

the car manufacturing and owning it

12:02

changes as does the choice between

12:05

efficiency raise and performance hybrids

12:07

can be as much as half the price as well

12:10

but that's where the problem comes right

12:12

think about that hybrids more expensive

12:14

to maintain than all electric vehicles

12:15

yes hybrids might be half the price but

12:18

that also means a disastrous margin

12:20

story for byd which all you have to do

12:23

is go to the investor relations page of

12:24

byd and you'll see it very simple this

12:27

is public information

12:28

the merits of One Versus the other offer

12:30

an entirely or is another an entirely

12:32

separate debate many critics say plugins

12:35

aren't even Green Tea Green cards

12:37

they're more like a wolf in sheep's

12:38

clothing however then you do have Toyota

12:40

that absolutely loves hybrids and

12:43

basically they make this argument that

12:45

hey well hybrid is still better than no

12:48

electricity usage at all right

12:50

now you also have very different

12:52

business models between byd and Tesla

12:54

goes on uh to say this opinion article

12:56

byd started out as a battery company

12:59

that now makes cars which is the

13:02

opposite about Elon Musk and byd has a

13:06

firm grip on their supply chain and has

13:08

moved more towards a vertically

13:10

integrated supply chain much like Tesla

13:12

like securing heaps of raw materials

13:15

Elon Musk does talk about owning lithium

13:18

mines but Tesla is still reliant on its

13:20

long and deep network of suppliers in

13:22

China now so far this doesn't sound like

13:24

the best piece for Tesla versus buid but

13:26

there's an interesting point here they

13:29

argue that byd is basically going from

13:31

less expensive cars to more expensive

13:33

and Tesla is going for more expensive to

13:35

less expensive right you're seeing price

13:37

raises of byd price cuts at Tesla the

13:40

margins are terribly different we've

13:42

already talked about that and that you

13:43

could actually see margin compression on

13:45

both sides right realistically Tesla's

13:47

margin could come down and byds could

13:49

grow maybe to depends how the recession

13:51

goes but here's an interesting piece

13:54

that I really like I'll hide my self for

13:56

it so you can see this full paragraph

13:57

here

13:58

Tesla seems to have taken advantage of

14:00

the weakness in prices for some raw

14:03

materials this is good and components

14:06

that have been Sky High in recent months

14:08

in China it does not have Supply locked

14:12

up the way bydu does now that might

14:14

sound like a weakness but it could

14:15

actually be a positive thing why could

14:18

it be a positive well if Tesla doesn't

14:20

have Supply locked away what does it

14:22

mean it means that Tesla if a market

14:25

price is for components and commodities

14:26

comes down potentially and and these

14:30

specific products aren't locked away

14:31

because we know some of them are locked

14:33

away it means Market or Tesla can take

14:35

advantage of market prices today rather

14:37

than waiting for contracts to roll off

14:39

every six months or whatever meaning

14:41

there's a lag in when they'll actually

14:43

be able to pass through lower costs to

14:45

lower prices

14:46

if they don't have Supply locked away

14:48

they're actually taking away or taking

14:50

advantage of these lowering prices you

14:53

could actually see margin preserve the

14:54

Tesla now maybe that's just hopium but

14:57

it's an interesting comment

14:59

lowering vehicle prices potentially

15:01

indicates an intent to tap the rising

15:03

demand for electric vehicles tapped

15:05

below 300 000 Yuan and D stock sales are

15:10

expected to grow 50 in tier 3 and tier 4

15:13

Chinese cities where incomes are lower

15:15

now it's important to compare 300 000 to

15:19

a U.S level it works out to about forty

15:23

four thousand dollars which is basically

15:25

suggesting that we want to simplify the

15:28

costs for the model 3 and get to a more

15:30

mass Market approach while byd tries to

15:33

focus on higher end now that'll be

15:35

really interesting because you wonder

15:37

how much of a selling pitch is FSD going

15:40

to be well with fun stories like the one

15:43

we started with I don't know but anybody

15:45

who's actually using FSD looks at this

15:48

and goes man how could you ever buy a

15:51

car again without full self-driving my

15:53

wife is somebody who's never wanted a

15:55

Tesla but after she saw FSD she's like

15:58

wow this kind of makes me want a Tesla I

16:00

was a blown away when she said that so

16:03

fascinating but it's not the last story

16:06

of today we've got a lot of information

16:08

in fact take a look at this Tesla

16:12

considering a 775 million dollar Texas

16:16

Factory expansion now what's crazy about

16:20

this is Elon Musk has said previously

16:23

and this is great uh that they plan to

16:25

open 10 to 12 new factories to increase

16:28

production that's what I predicted a

16:30

year ago I was just about six months

16:32

early in that prediction before Elon

16:34

Musk actually said it now that's great

16:36

uh in the long term not so great in the

16:39

short term if you make predictions too

16:41

early uh because you could read allocate

16:44

Capital inappropriately but that's okay

16:46

everybody ends up making mistakes but

16:49

let's get the details of this Factory

16:50

expansion take a look at the details

16:52

which electric broke down well the

16:54

electric hasn't been the most bullish on

16:56

Tesla lately I will be telling you but

16:57

anyway four projects include Ace almost

17:01

700 000 square foot facility called cell

17:03

one that would be built outside of the

17:05

Austin gigafactory folks this right here

17:07

is like a turn on to me okay

17:09

construction is expected to start

17:11

January 23rd wasting no time let's go I

17:15

love that that is what I'm talking about

17:16

the project with the next largest

17:18

footprint is the Drive Unit 400 almost

17:21

20 000 square foot facility construction

17:24

is expected to begin Feb six a cathode

17:27

facility expected to start production

17:29

Jan 30th completing this year most of

17:32

these completing within a year actually

17:34

Feb 12 2024 Jan 15 2024 December 18-23

17:39

and then another smaller sort of cell

17:41

test lab really just the size of a house

17:43

here completing in about August these

17:46

are based on permits right this is

17:49

really exciting I mean to me this is a

17:51

suggestion that regardless of the

17:54

short-term nonsense that's going on with

17:56

Tesla Tesla's saying look we are so

17:59

confident we are doubling down and we're

18:01

going for that copy and paste model

18:03

imagine now Tesla goes forward and

18:06

within six months you have the Mexico

18:08

facility announced the Indonesia

18:10

facility announced although maybe those

18:12

are the same rumor right like maybe

18:14

Tesla's picking between the two

18:16

TBD uh and then potentially you have

18:19

what it already looks like you have the

18:20

permits for this uh Texas expansion

18:22

while they're still ramping Giga Texas

18:24

oh boy like the numbers for Tesla are

18:27

just getting so gorgeous even if margin

18:30

Falls this is a company that as long as

18:33

it could sell Tesla's cheaper which I

18:34

think it can especially as as they are

18:37

by far and away three to five years

18:39

ahead of the competition and

18:40

self-driving nobody's got self-driving

18:42

like this I mean you even look at like

18:43

some of the Mercedes eqs Drive trains uh

18:47

really really great Vehicles powerful

18:49

vehicles well-designed vehicles quality

18:51

vehicles but you're talking about

18:52

nominal amounts of roads that are mapped

18:55

nominal access to actual self-driving

18:58

technology it's a problem and so this is

19:00

where what I like to do is I just look

19:02

at hey you know if what what if we

19:05

reduce prices and reduce margins at

19:07

Tesla and I've done this before I've

19:09

done sort of uh these worse worser case

19:12

scenarios where maybe we produce 4.2

19:14

million Vehicles by 2025. I dropped the

19:16

revenue per vehicle by five thousand

19:18

dollars on top of dropping the revenue

19:20

per vehicle by five thousand dollars I

19:23

also dropped the margin to 20 seven

19:25

percent down from thirty percent and

19:27

then what I do is I include zero percent

19:30

for FSD here okay no FSD upgrades I'm

19:34

still sitting at a price target of 515

19:36

uh in 2025. now I know as soon as people

19:39

see a 50p ratio they're like oh my gosh

19:42

that's so ridiculous this is calculated

19:44

based on at least a 30 growth rate at

19:47

Tesla uh and then basically a PEG ratio

19:50

of about 1.6 1.7 which is pretty

19:54

reasonable basically what you do is 50

19:56

divided by the growth rate it's about a

19:57

1.67 x PEG ratio that's how you do this

20:02

as long as you're growing by 30

20:05

1.67 times Peg is totally reasonable now

20:08

if that growth rate Falls then obviously

20:11

the future p e rate will fall right if

20:13

the growth rate for a company goes down

20:14

to 20 and you go to a 1.7 or 1.6 times

20:18

Peg sure the p e ratio should only be

20:19

32. you know the p e ratio right now for

20:23

uh for the s p is is 18 which actually

20:26

implies about a 10.7 percent growth rate

20:29

for all the companies in the S P 500

20:31

that's a rip-off we could actually be in

20:34

an S P 500 price bubble right now

20:37

because I expect EPS to grow

20:40

maybe three percent for the s p broadly

20:42

maybe we'll see what happens obviously

20:45

through this recessionary environment

20:46

but anyway these are some of my thoughts

20:48

on the latest on Tesla thank you so very

20:50

much for watching and we will see you in

20:51

the next one and I have I mentioned

20:54

we've got programs on building your

20:55

wealth link down below check them out
