0:00

- So you want to be a YouTuber,

0:01

you wanna shoot videos and make money.

0:03

So you probably started shopping for a camera

0:05

but then you realize you're going to need an SD card

0:07

to record the videos onto

0:08

and you gonna need a computer to edit the videos.

0:11

And there's probably a whole lot more

0:13

that you're gonna need

0:14

that you probably just don't know about yet.

0:16

Well, I've been shooting videos professionally

0:17

for over eight years now

0:19

and so I'm going to save you some time

0:20

and give you the complete gear checklist

0:22

that you're gonna need to start shooting YouTube videos.

0:25

You got to just press record.

0:26

Hey everybody, I'm Nolan Molt with Think Media,

0:28

now let's get right into this video

0:29

'cause we have a latte talk about that.

0:33

That was bad, it was kind of good though.

0:34

Everything I'm gonna talk about in this list

0:36

is going to be broken down into two different sections

0:39

and the first section I call must haves

0:41

because these are things

0:42

that you are absolutely going to need

0:44

in order to start making YouTube videos.

0:46

The second section that I'm going to talk about

0:48

is going to be the essentials.

0:50

These are things

0:50

that are gonna make your life so much easier,

0:52

they're gonna improve your video quality

0:54

and audio quality the most,

0:56

but they're not necessarily a must have

0:57

because there are workarounds.

0:59

So let's start with our must haves.

1:01

Now number one is the most obvious

1:03

it is going to be a camera.

1:04

Of course you need to actually film something

1:07

in order to post it on YouTube,

1:09

so having a camera is the number one top priority.

1:11

You can definitely get started with your smartphone,

1:14

you don't need to go out and buy a camera

1:15

but there's a lot of great cameras

1:17

underneath that $1,000 mark for shooting YouTube videos

1:20

like the Sony A6400, the Canon N50.

1:24

I even started on the Sony A5100,

1:26

it didn't even have a mic jack

1:28

but it had the flip out screen, had great autofocus

1:30

and so you definitely can get started, you know

1:32

under a thousand dollars,

1:34

even under $500 you can pick up a pretty good camera

1:36

but most of us do have smart phones laying around

1:38

and you can use your smartphone to start creating videos

1:41

and still get really good quality just out of your phone.

1:44

Now, if you're totally lost when it comes to cameras

1:46

maybe you want to buy one but you're not sure which one

1:48

I'm gonna leave a link in the description

1:49

called ThinkGearGuide.com. Make sure you check that out

1:52

because it has some of our favorite cameras

1:53

and lenses that we recommend to YouTubers and beginners

1:56

that are just getting started on this journey.

1:58

All right, number two, you're gonna need an SD card.

2:01

If you're shooting on something like a camera

2:03

and you're not shooting on your phone,

2:04

then you are going to need something

2:06

to record these videos onto

2:07

and so an SD card really is a must have.

2:10

My favorite SD card is by SanDisk

2:12

and it's linked in description down below

2:14

and this is the card is really affordable

2:16

but it's also fast enough to record 4k video.

2:19

So if you are shooting in higher resolutions like 4k,

2:23

this SD card is going to be perfect for you.

2:25

Even if you're shooting in 1080,

2:27

I still recommend using this SD card

2:29

because you can always level up

2:31

and it's just very affordable and lasts a long time.

2:34

Next up you are going to need something to edit your videos

2:37

until you are going to need

2:38

to pick up some sort of computer.

2:40

Again, if you decide to shoot on your phone,

2:42

there are some apps out there

2:44

where you can just edit directly off of your phone

2:46

and so that is definitely an option,

2:48

but if you do want to get a camera

2:49

and you want to edit on a computer,

2:51

I definitely recommend going with Apple

2:53

and getting their new M 1 Chip.

2:55

What I've been using back here is the MacBook Pro

2:57

with the M 1 Chip.

2:59

Now the M 1 Chip is important

3:00

because that's what's gonna make your computer super fast

3:03

and what's awesome is

3:04

these computers have been getting really affordable.

3:06

So if you pick up something like the MacBook Air,

3:09

it's still going to be great for you to edit videos.

3:12

The Mac mini with the M 1 Chip

3:14

is also a great, great option,

3:15

you're just gonna need to get a monitor

3:17

so that you can hook it up and start editing

3:19

as well as all the other options

3:21

that Apple are starting to release

3:22

like the iPad Pro with the M 1 Chip, as well as the IMAX.

3:26

These are great computers, they're gonna be very fast

3:29

and the nice thing is you're gonna be able

3:31

to upgrade over time

3:32

and this is not going to get slowed down

3:34

by a better footage that you might shoot on in the future.

3:37

So this is really a future-proof very safe, very effective

3:41

and fast computer lineup that you can use for your videos.

3:44

So when it comes to the must haves, that's honestly it,

3:47

that's really all you need.

3:48

I guess you need internet so if you don't have any internet,

3:50

you can run up to Starbucks

3:51

and use their free internet to upload to YouTube

3:54

but really to start creating content,

3:56

you could just do it with your phone,

3:58

but if you want to use a camera, a computer, SD card,

4:01

that's really the bare minimum bones,

4:04

what you're going to need to upload to YouTube.

4:06

So next up, we're going to talk about the essentials.

4:08

Now I'm not gonna try and sell you guys on stuff

4:10

that you're not going to need.

4:12

Seriously if you're a beginner,

4:13

these essentials are probably my top priority.

4:16

So if I was looking to save up money and buy some gear

4:19

I definitely would look at this essential pack

4:21

and just start getting these,

4:23

really not in any particular order.

4:24

You can definitely see what's going to be best for you

4:27

because it's going to be different for everybody

4:28

but these really are essential

4:30

that you are going to use so much

4:32

if you are creating YouTube content so let's get into it.

4:35

Number one is of course coffee, okay?

4:38

It's not actually coffee, but number one is a tripod.

4:42

Now a tripod is that thing with the three legs

4:44

that you put your camera on in order

4:46

to set it down wherever you want to get a good steady shot.

4:49

So the camera does not need to be held by somebody

4:51

or placed on a table, you can set it up on a tripod

4:54

like what I have right now

4:56

and start shooting videos of yourself.

4:57

If you're shooting videos, just like this

4:59

where you're sitting down talking to a camera

5:01

and the camera does not need to move at all,

5:03

I kind of just recommend getting the cheapest

5:05

like Amazon Basics tripod that you can find on Amazon.

5:09

Now, depending on your YouTube channel,

5:11

you might actually need more out of your tripod.

5:13

You might want to stand up and shoot videos

5:15

and in that case you are going to need a tripod

5:17

that can raise high enough

5:19

because the cheap tripods really are really short.

5:22

So if you are six foot or even like five, eight, five,

5:25

and 10 sometimes they don't even

5:26

bring the camera up to eye level

5:28

and that's not going to cut it

5:30

because then you get a really weird angle,

5:31

you definitely want your camera to be high enough

5:34

to be eye level.

5:35

On these cheap tripods,

5:36

you can tilt and pan with your camera

5:38

but it is not smooth at all and it's really frustrating

5:42

when you're trying to pan it just like jerking

5:44

and it's not smooth.

5:45

So you do want to get a fluid head tripod.

5:47

Again, that's going to get more expensive

5:49

but really it's just up to you and your content

5:51

and what you're going to need.

5:52

You can always start with a cheap tripod

5:54

and invest in a better one over time.

5:56

Number two is a microphone.

5:58

You want to invest in your audio

5:59

because I think it's sometimes even more important

6:02

than the video quality

6:03

because people want to hear what you're saying

6:05

and if it's hard to listen

6:07

then it's really hard to watch the video.

6:09

The reason this is in the essentials list

6:11

and not a must have is because cameras

6:13

have built in microphones and so do our phones.

6:16

So if you are shooting a video, it's gonna pick up audio

6:19

and you can use that just to get started

6:21

but picking up a microphone and upgrading to a lav mic

6:24

or a shotgun mic really is gonna make a huge difference

6:27

for your videos.

6:29

Again, to make this easy for you guys

6:30

so you don't have to do a whole bunch of research,

6:32

we've just listed our favorite microphones,

6:34

our favorite tripods,

6:35

everything down in the description below

6:37

so make sure you check that out.

6:38

Here at Think Media, we've used

6:40

and tested out so much camera gear, microphones, lights,

6:44

tripods, cameras, lenses, everything.

6:46

So we really want it to help save you a lot of time

6:49

so check those links,

6:50

we're gonna have our favorite lav mics,

6:52

our favorite budget shotgun mics,

6:54

everything is gonna be down below, check that out.

6:56

Number three is a light.

6:58

Now, no matter what camera you have,

7:00

whether you're starting on your phone

7:01

or you have a camera like I'm using now,

7:04

lighting is what's going to make your image look good.

7:07

I recommend starting with a softbox light

7:09

putting that right next to your camera.

7:11

It's going to give you a very nice soft light,

7:13

it's not gonna look harsh

7:14

like someone is shining a flashlight on you

7:16

and so having a softbox

7:18

with your light is going to be a major upgrade for you.

7:21

Now, I tested a bunch of the $50 softboxes on Amazon

7:25

and I came to conclusion

7:26

and found a really, really nice light

7:29

that has a remote, it's by color, so it can get warm,

7:32

it can get cool, like daylight temperature

7:34

and I really recommend that people just get started

7:37

with that $50 light

7:39

and it's gonna improve their videos so much.

7:41

Number four is hard drives.

7:42

Now really there's two different types.

7:44

If you're editing on your computer

7:46

and your computer's built in storage gets full,

7:49

it's gonna slow down your computer

7:50

and so you want to delete stuff

7:52

but instead of just deleting it,

7:53

what I recommend is getting an external hard drive

7:56

and putting your old videos

7:58

or whatever it is that you want to dump off that computer

8:00

and put it onto a hard drive

8:01

and then you can delete it off of your computer,

8:04

free up that space, continue editing YouTube videos

8:07

and having a fast computer for you.

8:09

So I do recommend picking up one of those hard drives

8:12

and that is going to save you a whole lot of space

8:14

from your computer.

8:15

You can just dump stuff onto it and leave it there

8:17

and then I recommend getting a faster hard drive

8:20

that you can edit right off of.

8:21

This is called an SSD

8:23

and I recommend the Samsung T5 hard drive.

8:26

This basically is just going to expand the storage capacity

8:29

on your computer so when you plug it into your computer,

8:32

you can have a bunch of videos on there

8:34

and you can edit off that hard drive

8:37

whereas with the other hard drives that are a bit slower,

8:39

they're much cheaper and they can store a whole lot more

8:42

but they're not fast enough for you to edit off of

8:45

and so I recommend having one of each.

8:47

And that's exactly what I do for these videos

8:49

in Think Media.

8:50

I'm shooting so many videos that I am editing off of my SSD

8:54

and then once I'm done with a few projects

8:56

or stuff is starting to get full,

8:57

I'll transfer a bunch of files from my SSD

9:00

onto an external hard drive

9:02

and that's kind of goes into storage

9:03

and saves everything for later.

9:05

So if I ever do need to pick up some old videos,

9:08

I can bring out that external hard drive

9:10

and bring it back onto my computer.

9:11

Number five is extra batteries.

9:13

You are going to need a few extra batteries

9:15

because in this price range

9:16

if you're looking for a camera under a thousand dollars

9:19

the batteries just are not that good.

9:21

I definitely recommend picking up

9:23

at least one or two extra batteries.

9:26

Now you can save a whole lot of money by going on Amazon

9:28

and looking for a third party seller.

9:30

So it's not going to be a Sony brand

9:32

or Canon or Panasonic brand,

9:35

but it's going to be the same type of battery

9:37

made by someone else

9:38

and you can pick those up for very cheap on Amazon.

9:41

So when you're filming, you have one battery in your camera.

9:44

Now you want to have one or two extra

9:46

like I was talking about,

9:47

make sure that they are already charged up

9:49

before you start shooting your videos

9:51

and then when one dies, you can swap the other one in

9:54

and then you instantly want to start charging

9:56

your extra battery into the charger

9:58

so if the other battery dies

10:00

you're shooting a lot of videos,

10:01

maybe you're shooting all day long,

10:03

you can just continue to swap these out

10:05

and that's gonna make sure

10:06

that you never have to stop filming,

10:07

if you have extra batteries, you can just keep on going.

10:10

Now that's it for the essentials.

10:12

Really, it's going to matter based on your work.

10:14

If you need to pick up extra monitors or Gimbels

10:17

or ND filters,

10:18

you might not even know what any of this stuff means

10:20

but there is a lot of stuff that you can get into

10:23

with this whole video creation process

10:25

and so that's just going to depend on your needs

10:27

and what you need it for.

10:28

But when it comes down to it,

10:29

you really just need a phone to get started.

10:31

Don't let any of the equipment get in the way

10:33

of you creating YouTube videos.
