How to Build Self-Control in 3 Simple Steps
FULL TRANSCRIPT
Do you want to learn self-control? These
three simple tactics will actually help
you build it in real life. Number one,
create a pause between impulse and
action. Your impulse comes from your
emotional brain. Like you see a cake and
before you even think, you eaten it.
It's like your emotional brain has
hijacked your logical brain. But if you
force yourself to pause for 5 seconds,
just 5 seconds, your logical brain will
wake up. That tiny pause will give you a
moment to choose. Number two,
prereddecide what to do when you feel
the urge to do something. See, if your
brain doesn't know what to do next,
it'll go right back to eating that cake,
right? That's why you need a plan that's
easily executable. For example, uh if I
feel like eating sugar, I'll drink warm
water. Now, your brain doesn't have to
think about what it has to do. It just
has to execute the plan. The most
important thing is after drinking the
water, you need to convince your brain
that it is good for yourself. Number
three, have a mental script. Prepare a
mental script for such tempting
situations. You can even reinforce this
process like I paused when I got an
impulse and then I chose what's good for
me and this will help me grow. It's like
you are training your brain to see the
end benefit. It will rewire your brain
and build your self-control muscle.
