I heard one preacher say, "You ought to

0:03

ask the question, if you are accused of

0:06

being a Christian, would there be enough

0:09

information? Would there be enough

0:10

evidence to indict you?" Praise the

0:13

Lord.

0:14

Let's just praise the Lord.

0:18

This is the Breath of Life television

0:20

broadcast with Pastor Walter L. Pearson,

0:22

Jr. When God gets ready, he can deliver

0:25

you if you call on him. If you trust in

0:28

him, he's worthy of the praise.

0:36

You're supposed to be down flat on your

0:38

face, but the power of God will lift you

0:41

up.

0:42

[Applause]

0:46

Tonight we go to the book of Daniel.

0:50

and in the book of Daniel to chapter 6.

0:55

And there we will find words that I am

0:58

certain will fall well within our theme

1:03

when God steps in.

1:06

I begin with verse 16.

1:11

So the king gave the order

1:14

and they brought Daniel and threw him

1:17

into the lion's den.

1:19

The king said to Daniel, "May your God,

1:23

whom you serve continually,

1:26

rescue you." A stone was brought and

1:29

placed over the mouth of the den. And

1:31

the king sealed it with his own signate

1:35

ring and with the rings of his nobles,

1:38

so that Daniel's situation might not be

1:40

changed.

1:42

Then the king returned to his palace and

1:45

spent the night without eating and

1:48

without any entertainment being brought

1:50

to him. And the king could not sleep.

1:55

Let's bow together as we pray.

1:59

Father in heaven, tonight we come again

2:03

wanting to see the power that is yours

2:06

when you choose to step in. Our hearts

2:10

are open tonight

2:12

for these are times that need the

2:15

presence of God.

2:17

Certainly a nation needs God and

2:20

certainly neighborhoods need God. But

2:23

tonight our focus is for our own lives.

2:28

We need God to step into our own hearts.

2:32

Now, as we go through these words

2:34

tonight that are sacred, we pray that

2:36

our hearts might be lifted and that our

2:38

minds might be enlightened in the name

2:40

of Jesus. Amen.

2:44

The situation is one that most of us are

2:48

fairly sure we know.

2:51

Daniel is a holdover from another

2:55

kingdom.

2:56

He is a holdover from Babylonia.

3:00

And you would suspect that uh when the

3:04

time comes for the Mes and the Persians

3:07

to put together their alliance

3:11

that most of the talent pool would be

3:15

expected to come from within.

3:18

In fact, try if you can not to put the

3:22

Bible outside of normal range.

3:27

There are the same human elements in

3:29

this book that exist right now. Can you

3:34

imagine if one nation had ruled and now

3:38

another comes to the stage that most of

3:41

the people who had supported the

3:43

government who had supported those who

3:46

had come into power would expect that

3:49

when positions were filled those

3:52

positions would be filled by the ones

3:53

who gave support.

3:55

Can you imagine the dismay

3:58

when somebody suggests that this man

4:02

held over from another time, another

4:06

period, another power structure is going

4:09

to be brought in now to fill a very high

4:12

position.

4:14

Think if you will that everybody was

4:17

happy.

4:19

But I can tell you this,

4:21

you may get smiles and warm handshakes

4:24

from people when you are promoted, but

4:27

everybody is never happy when you're the

4:31

one and they are not.

4:35

So in the hallways, you know, I want to

4:38

say there was a water fountain. You

4:39

know, there wasn't, but you understand,

4:42

don't you?

4:43

When they gathered around to talk,

4:46

somebody probably brought it up. It was

4:48

a ticklish subject, but someone had to

4:51

say it. And why is he danger?

4:55

That old has been

4:59

why again hasn't he seen his time? You

5:03

know, the young people want to say, "Get

5:05

the old folk out of the way and move

5:07

on."

5:08

And then there are some nationalists who

5:11

must have been around. How dare we bring

5:14

someone whose customs are different?

5:16

Why? We don't even know what these

5:18

people are like. And yet we bring this

5:22

man and put him high on the list. I read

5:25

that uh the country, the nation was

5:28

divided into what they called satropies.

5:31

And these satraps were people called to

5:34

keep order to make sure that there was

5:36

no anarchy but most importantly to make

5:39

sure that the revenue flowed smoothly.

5:43

All governments run on revenue

5:46

and they wanted to make sure that there

5:48

was there were no social uprisings

5:52

that nobody withheld taxes. So they set

5:55

everything as quietly and as calmly as

5:57

they could. But now a moment comes when

6:00

not only will this Daniel be listed

6:03

among those who are high in government,

6:07

but they are considering him to be the

6:10

first among the princ.

6:13

Ah,

6:15

that's a different story. You know, we

6:18

we'll be open-minded enough to have him

6:20

part,

6:22

but how dare you put him over me?

6:26

Someone must have made an impassion plea

6:28

to Das. How could you do it? I feel

6:31

stabbed in the back.

6:35

Where was Daniel when you were trying to

6:38

consolidate power? Where were these

6:39

people? How dare you? But the Bible is

6:43

clear that Daniel had an excellent

6:46

spirit.

6:48

You know, it's kind of hard to find

6:49

people with an excellent spirit anymore.

6:53

I I I think that if God is in your

6:57

heart, if you have dedicated yourself to

7:00

serve the Almighty, there certainly

7:02

ought to be some way to prove it. I

7:05

heard one preacher say, you ought to ask

7:08

the question, if you are accused of

7:11

being a Christian, would there be enough

7:13

information? Would there be enough

7:15

evidence to indict you?

7:20

If people followed you from day to day,

7:22

you know how they do, gathering

7:23

evidence, would it be possible for

7:26

someone to prove by looking at the way

7:29

you conduct your life that you serve a

7:33

God who is invisible? Well, when you

7:35

looked at Daniel, you could tell there

7:38

was something different about him. In

7:39

fact, one writer says that not only was

7:42

this Daniel a man with an excellent

7:44

spirit, but you could find no flaws in

7:48

the way that he conducted business.

7:51

Ah, now that's quite different. There

7:54

are people who are able to separate

7:56

their religion

7:58

from normal life. In fact, you've heard

8:01

people say it.

8:03

If you keep on with me, I'm going to put

8:05

my religion down.

8:09

You know, portable religion isn't of

8:11

much value at all, is it? If you put it

8:14

down, what in the world are you doing

8:16

with it? But Daniel obviously did not

8:19

only allow his love for God and his

8:22

quest for excellence to be a part of his

8:25

religious life, his worship, but he let

8:28

it bleed over into everything that he

8:30

did. so that when he was the one in

8:33

charge of a project, you could assume

8:36

that all of the dots would be over the

8:39

eyes and all the tees would be crossed

8:42

because that's the kind of administrator

8:44

he was. So when they began to talk about

8:48

putting him up, uh, people could make

8:50

all kinds of snide remarks and they

8:53

could level all kinds of criticisms, but

8:55

the one thing they couldn't say and the

8:57

one thing you don't read is he's not

8:59

qualified.

9:02

It's amazing when people can't find that

9:04

you're not qualified, they look

9:06

elsewhere.

9:08

But I would like to think, in fact, I I

9:11

I want to believe that at some point in

9:14

my life, I could rise to the point where

9:16

the only thing that my enemies could say

9:19

about me is that I'm faithful to my God.

9:22

Here was a man and and believe me if

9:25

they could have gone back through his

9:27

doseier. Don't think that somebody

9:29

wasn't left over from Babylonia. Some

9:32

sore head left over from Babylonia who

9:35

said, "You talk to me. I know him."

9:37

Said, "Well, let's talk. Let's do

9:40

lunch." You know,

9:43

so they go now to do a power lunch. And

9:46

the object of their conversation is,

9:49

"Tell me about this, Daniel. What's the

9:51

scoop on Daniel? Oh, I can tell you

9:54

about it. Well, what is it? We The man

9:57

has got to have some flaw. Everybody's

10:00

got some problem. What is it? Well, if

10:02

this man were wise, he would go all the

10:05

way through the lunch before he came to

10:07

the bottom line because he would hope

10:09

they picked up the check before they

10:11

discovered he had nothing to say.

10:14

There was nothing to dig up on Daniel.

10:18

In fact, if all of the people who had

10:20

asked him to serve were brought

10:22

together, the only accusation that they

10:25

could level was he's true to his God.

10:29

So, so when they looked at the records,

10:31

when they searched the doseier, when

10:33

they looked at the historical record and

10:36

when they wanted to know what kind of

10:38

reputation does he have, nobody could

10:41

come up with anything on him. I wouldn't

10:43

dare turn that around to us in this room

10:48

because then everyone would get nervous

10:52

because for most of us that just can't

10:54

be said. But here's a man who serves his

10:58

God so well that he is meticulous in the

11:01

way that he does his job. I think it's

11:03

the way that it ought to be. If you

11:06

claim to be like Christ, you ought to be

11:10

like Christ all the time.

11:13

even in the job that you do. So now what

11:18

will you do

11:20

if you want to stop a person from being

11:23

placed in an office but you can find no

11:27

place to put blame on them?

11:33

Well, you know all you've got to do is

11:35

get creative.

11:39

So you mean you have evaluated

11:40

everything and what do they say? Well,

11:42

we had the power lunch with the guy from

11:44

Babylonia. All he could come up with was

11:46

the man worships his god. Is that so?

11:50

Well, what do you know about it? Well,

11:51

we've checked with everyone and all of

11:52

the witnesses speak with one voice. The

11:55

only thing that they can find out

11:56

different about him is that he believes

11:58

in this God. It's different than the way

12:00

that we worship, but he certainly will

12:03

not change his pattern for anyone. Well,

12:06

I wonder my quandry is

12:09

how could we turn this very faithfulness

12:12

against it?

12:16

Some evil mind begins to turn in the

12:19

back of a room.

12:21

Well, suppose, let me just speak

12:25

theoretically.

12:30

Suppose it could be arranged so

12:33

that his identity to his God could

12:37

become a liability rather than an asset.

12:42

How do you do that?

12:44

What do they say he does with his God?

12:46

Well, as we understand it, at the 3rd,

12:49

the sixth, and the ninth hour, he leaves

12:52

his place of work and goes home. Uh in

12:55

those days they claimed that

12:57

Mesopotamian houses uh would often have

13:00

one room elevated from the rest of the

13:03

flat roofed house and this probably was

13:06

the prayer room. So that in Daniel's

13:09

situation he would go into the elevated

13:11

room if there were such he would turn

13:14

towards the direction of Jerusalem

13:17

and open the window.

13:20

Now you know that when you pray you

13:22

don't have to open a window.

13:25

That was not obviously for the sake of

13:27

God. For God hear his prayers through

13:30

closed windows.

13:33

God hear his prayers in any situation.

13:36

You can be at the bottom of the water in

13:39

a great fish.

13:44

God will hear the prayer. But Daniel was

13:47

so dedicated and so intentional in his

13:52

worship of his God that he didn't want

13:54

anybody to have any doubts about who he

13:57

was. I praise God for people like this

14:00

because there are so many folks today

14:03

who you can't tell what they're about.

14:07

You know the chameleon people.

14:12

They are whatever you are.

14:15

Soon as they find out who you are, well,

14:17

yes, I I quite agree.

14:21

And when you leave, they agree with the

14:22

next person and the next person. Their

14:25

whole lives are spent adjusting to the

14:28

ambiance in the room. There ought to be

14:32

somebody who believes in something.

14:35

Daniel was defiant in his decision. he

14:39

would worship the God of heaven and he

14:42

wanted people to know that there was a

14:44

difference in him and so he went and

14:47

opened the window towards Jerusalem and

14:48

there he prayed and they said this is

14:50

what we've discovered that he will leave

14:52

the office and he well said you know

14:54

maybe there's something in that there

14:57

perhaps we can make something of it his

14:59

customs are different what else did you

15:01

find well we discovered that there are

15:02

some differences in the way that he

15:05

dresses his diet is not quite like ours

15:08

uh this man has customs that don't

15:10

blend. He's he's he doesn't fit in. He's

15:14

not a team player.

15:20

If we could get this

15:23

maniacal obsession of his about this God

15:27

away, he might even fit in. But he

15:29

won't. Said, "Well, then why don't we

15:33

use that against him?" Well, come on.

15:37

How can you use that against? Sounds to

15:39

me like a good thing. Well, suppose just

15:43

just suppose

15:48

suppose our king

15:51

were to say that no one can pray

15:56

to anyone

15:58

except him for

16:02

30 days.

16:05

Well, that's absurd.

16:07

Why would the king ever say that?

16:10

Well, I wasn't thinking that the king

16:11

would say it on his own. I was thinking

16:13

that perhaps someone could uh maybe

16:16

incline him to take a position like

16:19

that. And if we we stroked him in the

16:23

correct way, you know, the king does

16:25

have a fairly healthy ego.

16:28

Perhaps we could cajul him. Perhaps he

16:31

could see light in being worshiped for

16:35

30 days. Now, let me show you what I

16:38

missed for the longest about this.

16:43

What they will try to get the king to

16:45

say and finally be successful at is to

16:48

say that you cannot pray to any god or

16:52

any man for 30 days except the king.

16:56

essentially stopping all prayer for a

17:00

month.

17:03

Do you know what kind of shape the world

17:04

is in with prayer?

17:12

It is mindboggling

17:15

to think that you would stop prayer for

17:17

a month. I don't know about about you,

17:20

but there have been some times in my

17:22

life when for whatever reason I have

17:24

allowed my prayer life to to have gaps

17:28

and I've discovered that when I don't

17:30

pray, my life is different.

17:33

Prayer is is the breath that I breathe.

17:36

It is the connection with God. How can

17:39

you make it without prayer?

17:42

There are problems that you can face

17:44

with prayer. Even though God may not

17:46

determine to take the problem away, God

17:48

will give you the strength to stand up

17:51

under the pressure if you pray.

17:57

But how in the world would you make it

17:59

without prayer for a month? How could

18:02

you make it a day without prayer?

18:05

This maniacal obsession that they cite

18:09

now makes them move in a way that does

18:12

not make sense at all. Well, allow me

18:15

now. I have not been able to read

18:17

anything or find anything on this, but I

18:21

have prayed that God will baptize my

18:23

imagination.

18:28

Allow me, if you will,

18:31

to guess at what it might have been like

18:34

when these

18:36

men go in to talk to the king. Oh, King

18:39

Das,

18:41

the majesty of your presence, sir,

18:45

forgive us, but in your presence, we are

18:48

hesitant to even speak.

18:55

Just before we came in, we were saying,

18:58

weren't we? How blessed we are.

19:04

No one anywhere,

19:06

no nation on the face of the earth can

19:09

boast a man with such wisdom,

19:13

with such insight. And beyond that, if

19:16

you would allow us to say a man whose

19:19

countenance is so fair to look upon,

19:21

forgive us, your honor, your highness,

19:24

we know that you're not a man who likes

19:25

this kind of thing, but sometimes our

19:28

hearts bubble over.

19:30

Please understand.

19:32

Now, we have brought you

19:37

[Applause]

19:42

We have brought you an idea.

19:46

We were trying to think of some way that

19:48

we could let it be known far and wide

19:52

that you are far and above any other

19:54

Putin date.

19:56

Could we sir don't speak too quickly?

19:59

Don't turn us away out of hand. Could we

20:02

sir for for just the period of a month

20:06

pray only to you and to no one else?

20:12

Think about it.

20:14

Many a person has been caught

20:17

in a situation just like this.

20:20

There are some men who allow women

20:29

to tell them things that they know are

20:31

not true.

20:35

I thank God for mirrors. Don't you?

20:40

before you leave home, you are able to

20:42

look at yourself and remind yourself

20:44

what you look like.

20:46

Brother, when a woman comes up to you

20:48

and say, "Oh, huh, you are so muscular."

20:52

And you know, the last time you pumped

20:53

iron, you were in your teens

20:57

and now most of your muscularity

21:00

has given way to gravity.

21:04

And yet you will allow some woman to

21:06

tell you things that you know are not

21:08

true. And in the the warmth, the basking

21:13

of the moment, do something or say

21:16

something or commit to something. That

21:18

does not make sense. And ladies, you

21:21

enjoyed that. But you know

21:25

those sweet nothings.

21:29

Oh, look at you. And you know you just

21:33

check the mirror, folks.

21:37

Check the mirror.

21:40

You can be safe. Look. Just look.

21:45

Oh, your eyes.

21:47

You know, you've seen your eyes all of

21:49

your life.

21:53

Oh, they just dance with lights.

21:57

Now you're about to do something very

21:58

foolish. There are people who get into

22:01

all kinds of trouble because somebody

22:03

says the right words in the right way.

22:06

They may be so far from the truth that

22:08

it's ridiculous,

22:10

but here is a king

22:12

about to do something silly.

22:16

Well, I uh I really should think on it,

22:20

but your highness,

22:22

it's something that you need to do.

22:23

Let's grasp the moment.

22:28

Our hearts bubble over. Allow us,

22:30

please.

22:32

Just if you would have fixed your your

22:34

signate here, we'll take care of all of

22:37

the the details. We we could have it

22:39

done, sir, before the day is over and

22:41

all of the people would rise up as one

22:44

and praise us for this gesture that

22:47

we're about to give you. Would you, sir?

22:49

Just give it to me, sir. Let me do it.

22:51

The W someone. Yes. Have it done. We

22:54

have it here. We've prepared it. It's

22:56

all done. Would you like to read it or

22:57

will you trust us?

23:03

And now it's done.

23:07

Now, don't think that Daniel is so naive

23:10

that he doesn't know. If you're going to

23:12

be in government,

23:15

you've got to have an information

23:17

system.

23:19

Huh? Forgive me. This is this is not

23:22

strictly biblical, but it does make

23:24

sense. You've got to be aware of what's

23:26

going on. This move by the king

23:29

reverberates all over now and the word

23:32

is out. The king has signed a document

23:35

that says you cannot pray to any god or

23:38

any man for 30 days. And Daniel in his

23:42

heart has to decide what will I do.

23:48

Will I you know how we rationalize God?

23:52

Well, God would certainly want me to

23:54

keep this position. Um after all I am

23:57

here representing him and if I pray

24:00

openly I will lose the position. So in

24:03

the long run it would really serve God's

24:06

purposes more for me to stay than to be

24:09

put out. So what would it hurt for 30

24:12

days if I were to simply pray quietly in

24:16

the office?

24:17

How many times have you done that in

24:19

your own heart?

24:22

Well, I I know what's right, but God

24:24

wouldn't want me to to to really

24:26

misrepresent him. But Daniel does not

24:29

make that decision, knowing full well

24:32

that they're watching. In fact, maybe

24:35

because they're watching when the third

24:38

hour from sunrise, let's suppose it's

24:41

around 9, they're watching now. Let's

24:43

see what he does.

24:46

See what strong man Daniel's going to do

24:49

now. And he leaves his office, goes

24:53

home. I said, "A lot of people follow."

24:55

Oh, yeah. We follow. We got them on him.

24:58

They're watching.

25:03

See if the window's open now.

25:08

You don't think he's going to do that,

25:09

do you?

25:11

Well, the window's open. You see him?

25:14

There he is.

25:17

Oh, this is going to be easy.

25:20

There he is praying.

25:23

Well, okay. You know, he's he's going to

25:25

make this. He's going to fall into the

25:27

trap.

25:29

And at the at the sixth hour and at the

25:32

ninth hour, he's there. And they observe

25:34

him and they take down the notes and

25:36

they make sure that it's all documented.

25:38

They have established a paper trail.

25:43

You know, when you go to the king, you

25:44

can't go empty-handed. And so, someone

25:47

has it there. So they got to get okay.

25:49

Do you have everything listed? Let's not

25:50

just do it one day. Let's let's watch

25:52

him a little longer. We don't have

25:53

exactly the time, but but let's watch

25:55

him. Daniel is there exactly on time. He

25:59

does not change anything. When he prays,

26:02

he opens the window and prays towards

26:04

Jerusalem. And his prayer is open and

26:07

above board. I suggest to you that when

26:11

you lose your sensibility

26:15

and when you make a silly decision, you

26:18

will discover that people's attitudes

26:20

change.

26:22

As long as you has heard all of this

26:24

foolishness, all of this ambrosized

26:28

talk, this sweet talk, now all of a

26:31

sudden these people change. They are no

26:33

longer friends of his, but now their

26:35

language is abrupt. Their movements are

26:37

nefarious. They are now calculating and

26:40

cold in what they do. They go and check

26:42

Daniel and finally one commentator says

26:46

that they even waited until a moment

26:48

when Daniel was praying and broke in

26:51

unexpectedly and knocked at his door to

26:54

make sure that he was there praying. And

26:56

if Daniel answered, says this

26:58

commentator, then they went in on him to

27:01

make sure. What were you doing? And he

27:04

did not hide that he was praying to God

27:07

Almighty. For when you have God on your

27:11

side, you don't have to hide from

27:13

anybody.

27:17

Now, now they're ready. Uh, King,

27:22

uh, you you remember we were here the

27:25

other day with the little thing you

27:26

signed.

27:28

We got a problem.

27:30

This man Daniel that you want to promote

27:33

all the time.

27:36

Did we mention the other day that he's

27:38

not like us? Well, I think we did. Um,

27:41

we have here a a bill of particulars.

27:44

You know, if it were now, it would be a

27:46

computer print out.

27:49

uh the surveillance report

27:51

reconnaissance now and somebody would

27:53

have unfolded those little papers that

27:55

are green on one line and white on the

27:57

other and they pull uh here are all of

28:00

his movements as you can see sir uh the

28:03

rule the law specifically says no prayer

28:06

to any god or man except you and here

28:11

just follow that down you see this is an

28:15

open

28:16

flaunting of our law and and I think do

28:21

we have to remind you sir that here once

28:25

you sign and affix your seal even you

28:28

your highness cannot change the law. Now

28:32

the historians say that the calaldanss

28:34

were different. They gave their rulers

28:38

both the authority to make law and to

28:41

take it back. If you're going to have

28:44

human beings rule over you, you ought to

28:46

give them the ability to change bad law.

28:50

Huh?

28:52

We are close enough just now to the

28:54

capital of the United States of America

28:56

to be able to say that with some

28:58

authority. You ought to have the ability

29:00

to write law and to resend law. So if

29:04

you're going to ask of any one human

29:06

being to rule with power, then you ought

29:09

to give that person the power both to

29:11

make law and to take it back. The

29:13

Calaldanss did. The Mes did not. The

29:16

Persians, the Mes and the Persians

29:18

decided when the king makes the law, he

29:20

ought to have enough foresight. He ought

29:22

to have enough wit about him that when

29:24

he makes a rule, we ought to live with

29:25

it. So they would not allow the king to

29:28

have the ability to withdraw bad law. So

29:32

when they had him committed, he was in

29:34

and could not extract himself. So now

29:38

they come and hoist him on the horns of

29:41

his own dilemma. They tell him now sir,

29:45

you cannot change. Here is your law and

29:48

here is someone who has flaunted your

29:50

law. Now the rule says the cautisle here

29:55

says that we must take such a person and

29:58

dispose of that person by throwing them

30:00

into the den of lions.

30:05

You have been to the zoo to see lions.

30:09

I uh I've had the privilege of traveling

30:12

to Africa uh several times and I teased

30:16

them on most of my trips that the

30:19

wildest animal that I had seen on the

30:22

continent of Africa was a goat

30:26

and the word got out.

30:29

So on one of my trips to Zimbabwe,

30:32

someone came to me after my last

30:34

speaking engagement and they said,

30:36

"Pastor Pearson, word has reached us

30:39

that you say that the wildest animal

30:42

that you have seen on the continent is a

30:45

goat. Is that so, sir?" I'm feeling a

30:48

little bit like Das now.

30:53

Possible that I said something like

30:54

that.

30:57

said, "Well, Elder, we're about to

31:00

change that situation. In fact, if you'd

31:03

get in the car, we've already packed

31:04

your luggage. We're about to take you to

31:07

a game reserve. And at this one, pastor,

31:10

the animals are free and the people must

31:14

stay inside."

31:25

Well, you know, I I didn't want to seem

31:26

like I was not up to it.

31:30

So, I get in the car. It's actually one

31:33

of those strange rover type vehicles.

31:35

Not the Land Rover. That would have been

31:37

much nicer.

31:39

And we're we are riding forever, it

31:41

seems.

31:43

And at length we come at the end of a

31:45

day to a place where we drive inside the

31:49

gates and they shut the gates and about

31:52

2 minutes in a lioness

31:56

turned on the road would not move.

32:01

You should have seen her.

32:04

She had an attitude of ownership.

32:08

She turned and looked like, "What are

32:10

you doing here?"

32:13

The man stopped the car. The lioness

32:15

froze for just a moment to punctuate her

32:18

ownership.

32:20

And when she had proven her point, she

32:23

walked slowly, majestically over to the

32:26

other side and looked back at us as to

32:29

say, "Now you may pass."

32:34

And they said to me, "This is going to

32:36

be good. The lions are out.

32:42

We uh

32:45

we went that night to the little little

32:48

house where you where you go in. I

32:50

checked everything. I I was just being

32:52

careful for my wife.

32:57

She wasn't there and I knew she wanted

32:59

me to return.

33:03

Check the windows,

33:06

doors.

33:07

check. And then they said, "Look, let

33:10

let's go sit outside

33:13

and eat."

33:16

They don't know it, but I carefully

33:17

positioned my chair

33:19

so that I had instant egress

33:23

into the house. ingress, I should say,

33:26

ingress. And we sat there talking and

33:29

they were talking and I'm eating.

33:32

If you think that a lion in a zoo sounds

33:35

frightening, you don't know what a lion

33:38

is like. In the zoo, the losers are

33:41

there. These are lions that got caught.

33:48

These lions are bemoning their

33:50

situation. These, you think they sound

33:53

horrible. These lions are are weary and

33:56

sad. They are bored. They're sick.

34:00

I heard noises that I had never heard

34:03

before. My blood curdled as I listened.

34:06

I said, "What uh was what was that?" Uh

34:12

lion pastor. I said, "Would you think

34:15

you heard one lion?" "No, there are more

34:18

there. There must be many of them. We

34:20

heard them." And I said, "Okay."

34:25

Now, think of it. In those days the some

34:28

of the historians think that if you

34:30

wanted to impress an emperor or a ruler

34:34

you would bring that person some animal

34:37

that betokened

34:39

their qualities. It would be

34:41

contraindicated to bring a king a

34:44

chicken.

34:50

But people would bring animals that

34:53

bespoke power. And if you wanted to

34:56

bring someone, some animal to to impress

35:00

a high ruler, you would bring them an

35:03

animal that had those qualities. Now,

35:05

when you think of it, the lion, I I I

35:07

did my little research. Panthetherra,

35:10

Leo, the cat family, Filidi,

35:14

king of the beast, with the exception of

35:17

one tiger, the largest carnivorous

35:21

mammal on the face of the earth. 9 ft.

35:24

sometimes from nose to tail. Tory

35:28

yellow,

35:30

powerful and unpredictable.

35:34

There I am outside with

35:38

these animals. And it made me think the

35:41

next time I preach this sermon, it'll be

35:42

different because these are not animals

35:45

that have been caught in some zoo. They

35:46

have been caught and put down in a cave,

35:50

a hole in the ground and a rock put over

35:53

them. That is even worse than a zoo

35:56

where they can look out and see the

35:58

terrible plight that they have. Now

36:00

these these animals are locked in the

36:03

bosom of the earth. The king of beasts

36:06

insulted.

36:08

They can't wait to change that

36:10

situation.

36:12

And I imagine that sometimes when the

36:13

king would get bored, he might go and

36:15

look and they toss some big piece of

36:17

meat in there. But these lions had not

36:20

been fed for a long time. And now they

36:22

say to him, "Your friend Daniel, sir, we

36:26

will take now and put into this den of

36:28

lions." And when we take him, and

36:30

there's every reason to believe that

36:31

Daniel at this point in his life might

36:34

have been at least 90 years of age. Some

36:37

would suggest perhaps even older.

36:40

But it makes no difference what your age

36:42

is. If they're about to drop you into a

36:45

chasm that is filled with hungry lions.

36:49

And so they take the old man and suspend

36:52

him for a moment of enjoyment as the

36:56

king stands by having done all that he

36:58

can for a whole day with all of his law

37:01

staff working frantically trying to get

37:04

a loophole to get him to be able to

37:05

change the law of the mess and the

37:07

Persians. But he cannot.

37:10

Now he comes to the moment when he has

37:12

to go down and not only put Daniel

37:14

inside this chasm and roll the rock

37:17

back, but he must now take his signate

37:21

and the signate of the other rulers so

37:24

that even the king cannot sneak back,

37:28

open the lion's den, take him out and

37:32

seal it again. All of them put their

37:36

signate there. So the Bible says they

37:41

did it so that nobody could change

37:45

Daniel's situation.

37:50

My question is simple.

37:53

Why didn't God stop that before that

37:55

happened?

37:58

Do you know how powerful God is?

38:02

Your heart beats

38:04

because of the power of God. Oh, I know

38:08

the physicians will be quick to point

38:09

out that that this muscle has been put

38:12

there in your chest and and and it does

38:15

not need your thought process. Your

38:18

heart does not wait for you to think for

38:20

it to beat. This muscle has been set in

38:22

motion from birth. And and and in a real

38:24

sense, God has given us the power to

38:27

have hearts that beat. But God's power

38:30

is the one that set it in motion. The

38:32

Bible says in him we live and move and

38:35

have our being. And I believe that life

38:38

is sustained by God. I believe that life

38:42

is a gift from God. God would have had

38:45

the power to withdraw life from all of

38:48

those enemies to frighten them to cause

38:51

some cataclysmic event to make an

38:54

earthquake to cause a media to fly out

38:57

of nowhere. God could have done anything

38:59

to stop it before it got this far. So

39:02

why does God let trouble go that far?

39:06

Why would God let a man be dropped into

39:09

a den of hungry lions? Why would God let

39:12

it go this far?

39:15

My answer is simple. If he hadn't, you'd

39:19

have never read it.

39:23

Huh?

39:25

Who would have put that in the Bible?

39:28

Uh there is a rumor that people were

39:30

angry with Daniel.

39:32

It is thought that they might have done

39:34

something terrible, but they changed

39:37

their minds.

39:42

There's nothing in that. But in order

39:44

for God to show that he's God, God has

39:48

to wait until there's no other way to

39:51

explain what he does.

39:55

He's got to wait until you can't explain

39:59

away his power. Cuz how many times have

40:02

you done it? God opens the way for some

40:05

cousin to give you back some money that

40:07

they've owed you for 5 years. And

40:10

instead of giving God the glory, you

40:12

say, "Oh, I'm so happy my cousin came

40:14

through." When God sent your cousin the

40:18

impulse to give you back what you had,

40:20

there are people who give credit to the

40:22

credit union. I went to the credit union

40:24

and because I've been working down

40:26

there, they gave me a loan. Well, based

40:28

on your credit, you should have gotten

40:30

nothing. Even though you work there,

40:32

even though they can take it out of your

40:34

check, you shouldn't have gotten a loan,

40:35

but God opened the way. And yet, you

40:37

don't give credit to God. You give

40:39

credit to the credit you. You go down to

40:41

buy a car. You're not supposed to be

40:43

able to buy a car. Your credit report

40:45

almost made the computer get warm.

40:49

[Applause]

40:52

But God got tired of watching you riding

40:55

in that car of yours that starts when it

40:57

gets ready. And so God arranged,

41:01

huh? You know that little room they put

41:04

you in where there's no air conditioning

41:08

and you're sitting in there.

41:10

Lord, please

41:12

send it away. You know the car and you

41:15

you got it all fixed up, put that thick

41:17

oil in it and brought it down there and

41:19

prayed that it would run until they

41:20

looked at it and they g looked at it and

41:22

told you how much they give you for it.

41:24

Now they're checking your credit and you

41:25

can hear that music playing and M

41:29

what am I going to do?

41:31

But you're trying to make your face not

41:33

show it.

41:35

Finally, they come back in and say, "Uh,

41:37

sir, uh, everything checked out fine."

41:41

And you want to shout, but you can't.

41:45

You've got to act like this is normal,

41:48

but you're wondering what whose credit

41:51

report did they check?

41:54

Am I actually going to have this car?

41:56

And and watch it. Now you get in the car

41:59

now when you first get in. Oh, how you

42:01

praise God. Praise God. Look at me.

42:08

Drive by a big window somewhere so you

42:10

can see it.

42:14

Hallelujah. Look at this. You praising

42:16

God until

42:18

you kind of get used to it.

42:21

Now it is no longer a blessing from God.

42:24

Somebody asked How'd you get that car?

42:27

Well, you know, I uh

42:30

I know a little bit about business and

42:34

you know, I just I've always been able

42:36

to work things out. I mean, it's it's

42:38

just something to second. My dad was

42:40

able to do that. My mother is like that.

42:43

You know, that's just able to do it. So,

42:45

what God has to do is to take away all

42:47

your excuses and get him some glory. And

42:49

when you drop somebody in a lion's den,

42:52

how many know that all of the excuses

42:54

are gone?

42:58

No more excuses.

43:00

Drop you down there.

43:04

The lion's supposed to be waiting.

43:09

You know, it's getting ready to be some

43:11

feeding time in here.

43:15

But Daniel said

43:17

God sent his angel.

43:24

you I forgive me but I get excited when

43:27

this stuff happens. You know

43:29

[Applause]

43:32

drop you down by a lion and you know you

43:35

almost feel it happening cuz you know

43:37

what's you know what you're going to

43:38

feel next, right? And the lion comes up

43:41

with that ugly sound, but he can't get

43:44

his mouth open cuz

43:46

some angel,

43:52

[Applause]

43:58

you know, maybe the angel didn't even

43:59

have to hold him. The angel just said,

44:01

[Applause]

44:11

You may not obey God, but a lion knows

44:13

what to do.

44:16

Amen.

44:20

Now, watch this. Watch this. King goes

44:23

back to the palace. Can't eat.

44:28

No entertain. King, you want us to No,

44:30

music. My friend is down there in that

44:33

lion's den.

44:35

Up at the palace, the king can't sleep.

44:38

While down in the lion's den, it is

44:41

possible.

44:44

Psalm 127 says that God gives his

44:48

children sleep. When you go to sleep at

44:50

night, it is not because of some

44:52

pharmaceutical preparation.

44:55

See, the sleeping pill can knock you

44:57

out, but only God gives sleep.

45:01

You can take something to make you

45:02

unconscious. Then in the morning you got

45:04

to take something to wake you up. But

45:06

only God gives sleep.

45:09

So it is possible, say the commentators,

45:12

that Daniel had a better night's sleep

45:14

in the lion's den than the king had in

45:16

the palace. And I suggest to you that

45:19

when God steps in, it doesn't make any

45:21

difference where you live. It doesn't

45:22

make any difference what you have.

45:24

Doesn't make any difference what they

45:25

think of you. If God be for you,

45:33

So, so, so God can step in to your

45:37

situation where you are. God does not

45:40

have to pull you out of your tenement

45:42

and put you in a penthouse to make you

45:44

blessed. God can bless you where you

45:47

are. God doesn't have to give you a man

45:53

to bless you. In fact, if you get the

45:57

wrong man,

45:58

you'll wish God had not blessed you like

46:00

that. God can bless you alone, sister.

46:05

He can do more for you alone without

46:08

than the wrong man could do if he were

46:10

there. And you, brother,

46:13

are you listening to me? We try to ask

46:16

God for things and then tell God how to

46:18

do it. Let God decide on his own

46:20

delivery system.

46:23

God could have kept Daniel out of the

46:25

den of lions, but he put him there so

46:28

that you could know that when you are

46:30

surrounded by lions,

46:34

like on your job,

46:38

you know, you got some lions at work,

46:40

don't you? You know, come by your

46:42

office,

46:44

[Music]

46:47

huh?

46:49

There are some lions in some houses.

46:52

They are relatives who are lions.

46:54

Somebody in here may be married to a

46:56

lion.

47:01

I know a God who can shut the lion's

47:03

mouth.

47:05

In fact, it's sad. But sometimes you go

47:07

to church and the lions are in church.

47:12

I know. I've been a pastor for almost 30

47:14

years. I've been around a few members

47:16

who were lions and I said, "Lord,

47:18

please. You did it once. Do it again.

47:22

God can do for you what he needs to do.

47:26

Wherever you are, he does not have to

47:28

change your location to give you his

47:30

blessing. God is able where you are to

47:34

bless you. You say, "God, I need some

47:36

money." God said, "Let me skip money. I

47:38

just give you what you need."

47:43

Lady came to me in a church said,

47:45

"Pastor, I need a warm coat." I said,

47:47

"Let's pray."

47:49

you know, okay, I'll pray. So, you got

47:51

faith or not. Well, I said, well, if you

47:54

don't have faith, we don't waste time

47:55

praying.

47:57

Huh?

47:59

He that cometh to God must believe that

48:01

he is, that he's a rewarder of them that

48:03

diligently seek. If you don't have

48:04

faith, quit wasting your time. Look at

48:05

television.

48:08

She said, "Okay, okay. I'm going to have

48:10

faith." We got down on our knees and

48:11

prayed. Lady went to the place. Didn't

48:13

have a great job. She was taking care of

48:14

a of of a house for a while, and she was

48:16

mad about the job. God took the job she

48:19

had.

48:21

The lady who owned the house had worn

48:23

the coat on this side of the pond and

48:27

that side of the pond. It happened to be

48:30

a certain kind of fur that was invogue

48:33

then. You can't wear them now and be

48:36

careful now. Folks will spray paint all

48:38

over you and stuff. But in those days it

48:40

was it was still acceptable. Went over.

48:44

The lady said, "Look, have you seen that

48:45

coach?" She said, "Yes, I saw." Well,

48:47

you know, we can only wear them twice.

48:50

Wear them in America and then we wear

48:51

them in Europe and then you can't be

48:53

seen in it again.

48:57

Would you be so kind as to accept it?

49:05

Come try it on. You know,

49:09

kind of fits.

49:10

Sister came to church. I said,

49:17

Last week we didn't have a coat. Now we

49:19

got

49:21

what's going on? She said, "You know

49:23

what? You told me the Lord could skip

49:25

money." She said, "I don't have any more

49:26

money now than I had last week." But

49:37

I'll tell you one thing that money can't

49:39

buy. Peace of mind.

49:42

Amen. When Howard Hughes died, every

49:46

book that I've ever read said that the

49:48

man with all of his money was paranoid.

49:52

Put down tissues and towels in every

49:54

hotel room. His fingernails grew out

49:56

like some animal and he had a bone, one

49:59

book suggests, protruding from his body

50:02

with all of his money, frightened,

50:04

riding in Chevrolets, hiding in

50:07

darkness. Money will not buy you

50:09

happiness. But when God steps in, he can

50:12

skip money.

50:16

Give you whatever he wants you to have.

50:18

King comes early in the morning. Got to

50:20

finish. Got to close up.

50:23

King can't sleep. Son comes up. He said,

50:26

"Let me go down here and see what

50:27

happened."

50:28

With a with a voice that cracks, you

50:32

know, when you haven't slept all night

50:33

anyway.

50:34

Daniel afraid to call but afraid not to.

50:40

Daniel,

50:42

is your God able?

50:46

Let's stay stick with me now. Don't miss

50:48

Don't miss this. If Daniel had been

50:51

frightened all night, he would not have

50:54

been able to exchange platitudes

50:57

in the cultural context.

51:01

See, if you've been scared all night,

51:03

you say, "Huh?"

51:07

Daniel says, "Oh, king, live forever."

51:18

Oh, king, live forever.

51:22

That means that it wasn't a bad night. I

51:23

don't know how you spent yours, but I'm

51:25

all right. Got a little cool, but I laid

51:27

on one of these lions over here.

51:31

My Lord was able to shut the lion's

51:34

mouth and brought them out. Now watch

51:37

this. Just in case the people get in

51:39

there and say, "Well, see what happened

51:41

was the lions weren't hungry." King

51:43

said, "All you folk who got him in

51:44

trouble,"

51:48

they said, "Don't worry. Don't worry. He

51:50

didn't eat Daniel. It's okay. Come on.

51:52

Let's go." Daniel's at the lions ate

51:55

them up. Now, watch this.

51:58

Got got to do this one before we close

52:00

it.

52:03

Daniel,

52:04

what happened down there?

52:10

My God,

52:12

said his angel

52:15

and shut the lion's mouth because

52:19

two reasons. Check it. Check me.

52:24

I did the king no harm

52:27

and innocency

52:30

was found in me.
