FULL TRANSCRIPT

0:00

hey everyone me Kevin here here's my

0:02

fact check of the Republican

0:04

presidential debate from last night we

0:06

obviously covered it live now I've gone

0:09

through some of the claims that were

0:10

made and I want to add some data and

0:12

perspective to some of the things that

0:13

were said when they're facts I'll say it

0:15

what their opinions I'll say it let's

0:17

keep it as clean and unbiased as

0:19

possible number one Vivek says more are

0:22

dying of bad policy than of uh climate

0:26

change and he's referring to climate

0:27

policy the question here is who's dying

0:30

of bad climate policy this sounds good

0:34

and really what it's echoing is this

0:36

sentiment that people are frustrated

0:37

about the amount of money that's being

0:39

spent on green energy this is clearly a

0:41

democratic priority we have the

0:43

inflation reduction act pushing a lot of

0:45

subsidies for solar and wind and these

0:48

are things very easily bedeviled by

0:50

Republicans but the reality is climate

0:53

change policies like 30 tax credits on

0:56

solar panels or batteries for your home

0:58

or tax credits for an electric vehicle

1:00

up to 7 500 federally or another seventy

1:03

five hundred dollars depending on the

1:04

state you're in those are not policies

1:07

that are killing people so while that

1:10

sounded good when we actually parsed out

1:12

what Vivek said here he made an argument

1:16

that wasn't based in fact now let's be

1:19

clear climate change it's debated is are

1:23

humans contributing to it or not and

1:26

that is a big debate that's not

1:27

something we're going to clarify in this

1:29

there's obviously this belief that we

1:31

could be going through a cyclical global

1:33

warming this is what happens when you

1:34

come out of an ice age and the argument

1:36

is well are humans accelerating that but

1:40

the acceleration of climate change has

1:43

nothing to do with climate change

1:44

policies killing people so I thought

1:47

this argument was weak by Vivek Nikki

1:50

Haley then follows up and says look

1:52

green subsidies don't work and she

1:54

doesn't provide any fact or evidence for

1:56

this in fact the wide belief by

2:00

Americans and this is this is a little

2:02

harder to study but the best way we can

2:04

evaluate whether or not subsidies work

2:06

is just look at December of every single

2:08

year in the Solar industry or the

2:10

electric vehicle industry whether it's

2:11

in Germany or the United States or

2:13

elsewhere throughout the world as soon

2:14

as the subsidies are set to expire

2:16

there's an explosion in people buying

2:19

green products because they're looking

2:20

for a tax write-off so I think that

2:22

alone stands in the face of Nikki

2:25

Haley's argument that green subsidies

2:27

don't work uh Mr burgum or uh uh Doug

2:32

burgum argues that Biden green lit

2:36

Russia's invasion of Ukraine this is

2:39

well hands down false Biden and the CAA

2:44

made it explicitly clear that Putin

2:47

would suffer substantial consequences

2:49

for not just his country but his economy

2:51

in the event they invaded Ukraine now

2:53

obviously the war has taken a lot longer

2:56

than everybody has expected but there

2:58

was no green lighting of it yeah oh yeah

3:00

go ahead and invade Ukraine what he's

3:02

doing is he's suggesting that because

3:04

Biden withdrew from Afghanistan and we

3:07

can pretty much mostly agree that the

3:10

withdrawal was pretty dang botched I

3:12

covered this as it was happening it was

3:13

a disaster and that may have led a power

3:15

well it clearly did lead to a power

3:18

vacuum in Afghanistan and may have set a

3:20

precedent for a terrorist style

3:24

organizations to invade other areas

3:27

Taliban into Afghanistan Russia

3:30

terrorizing eastern Ukraine

3:32

that is not by Biden green lighting

3:35

Russia invading Ukraine worth noting

3:39

Hutchinson says there is no uh abortion

3:43

or there should be no abortion on demand

3:45

through term and DeSantis and Scott Echo

3:49

this and say you know Democrats in

3:51

California and New York are killing

3:53

babies through term which implies all

3:55

the way up to 40 weeks this is just

3:57

straight up not true first of all let's

3:59

understand the facts ninety percent of

4:01

abortions happen before 12 weeks most

4:04

Republicans are accepting of abortion up

4:08

to 15 weeks yes we have Evangelical

4:11

Republicans that do not support any

4:13

abortion and these are debates to be had

4:16

but the point is only 1.3 percent of

4:20

abortions happen after 21 weeks

4:22

California stops the right to an

4:25

abortion at fetal viability which can be

4:28

around 21 to 24 weeks New York stops

4:31

abortions at 24 weeks and only if

4:34

there's a threat to the life of the

4:36

mother mother after 24 week weeks is

4:40

there the possibility of an abortion

4:41

this is very different from what Scott

4:44

and DeSantis and Hutchinson were arguing

4:47

and I think when we look at the numbers

4:48

we realize okay we're we're talking

4:50

about a very small percentage of

4:51

abortions and yes while that is a debate

4:54

that should be had is it a state's right

4:55

issue is it a federal rights issue it's

4:57

a debate worth having it should be

4:59

framed with a proper fact Tim Scott says

5:02

that the average American lost ten

5:04

thousand dollars worth of income this is

5:06

based on a Heritage Foundation claim

5:08

which has since been revised to about a

5:10

loss of sixty eight hundred dollars in

5:11

purchasing power however we did see

5:14

inflation adjusted per capita income

5:16

actually rise to offset a lot of this

5:19

and while it is a popular sentiment to

5:23

argue that inflation today is making

5:24

everything more expensive which is

5:26

actually true everything is much more

5:28

expensive 20 to 30 percent more

5:29

expensive

5:30

the average income of Americans

5:33

throughout the countries uh throughout

5:34

the country has risen at least on a per

5:37

capita basis to offset at least some of

5:41

this if not a large chunk of this so the

5:44

idea that the average American lost ten

5:46

thousand dollars in purchasing power is

5:48

absolutely stretched he would be more

5:50

accurate to say lost around sixty eight

5:53

hundred dollars in purchasing power and

5:55

if you inflation adjust real earnings

5:57

some are arguing well we might be closer

6:01

to par the problem is everything still

6:03

feels more expensive because we look and

6:05

we go why is the house eight hundred

6:07

thousand dollars now it used to be six

6:09

hundred twenty five thousand dollars

6:10

I'll take the inflation that we had from

6:12

2020 to 2023 and actually inflation

6:15

adjusts out to no growth in other words

6:18

a 650 000 house approximately is now

6:21

worth 800 solely on the basis of

6:23

inflation now that's not great but it

6:26

doesn't mean we're going to unwind all

6:28

of that and bring prices all the way

6:30

back down to 650 then we would be in a

6:33

deflationary environment and that's

6:35

obviously one of the sentiment issues

6:37

that we have is that we might go into

6:39

this presidential election with two to

6:42

three percent inflation but prices will

6:44

still be 30 percent higher than they

6:46

were three to four years ago and so that

6:48

will still be a sentiment issue

6:50

everybody has to get over my concern

6:52

though is if Republicans are so heavily

6:54

focused on an inflation argument and at

6:56

least the government statistics are

6:58

telling US inflation is two to three

6:59

percent by the time of the election they

7:02

might have a weaker leg to stand on so

7:05

they might want to revise their attacks

7:06

on Biden since we are trending towards

7:09

lower inflation a lower rate of prices

7:12

going up

7:13

uh Vivek stated that we have a crime

7:15

wave going throughout the country and

7:17

this is true if you're just watching

7:19

Twitter or X all day long and it was

7:21

true during the pandemic there was a

7:23

surge of crime especially in late 2021

7:26

and early 2022 however when we look at

7:30

the first and this could be a lapping

7:31

issue but when we look at the first six

7:33

months of 2023 uh the facts are at least

7:37

according to my citation written here uh

7:41

I had my situation where is it where is

7:42

it where is it with my citation my

7:44

citation is missing well I had a

7:46

citation but I can't find it when I find

7:48

my citation I'll mention it to you but

7:49

anyway I wrote this down uh from a

7:52

citation uh for the first six months of

7:54

2023 uh oh here it is the Council on

7:57

criminal justice reported that a violent

7:59

crime compared to 2022 uh it was down

8:02

9.4 gun assaults down 5.6 robbery is

8:06

down 3.6 percent residential burglaries

8:08

down 3.8 aggravated assaults down 2.5

8:11

percent car thefts however definitely up

8:14

San Francisco probably contributing a

8:16

lot to that uh but but this idea that

8:19

America is solely on this path of

8:21

decline because crime's going up

8:22

everything's getting worse I don't think

8:25

that's necessarily accurate or founded

8:26

in fact it may be found at its sentiment

8:29

especially since small business optimism

8:31

medium business optimism not that great

8:34

right now we're definitely in turbulent

8:36

Economic Times we got to come to terms

8:39

with the fact that everything is now 30

8:40

more expensive it sucks uh and and

8:43

incomes are just now playing catch-up

8:45

look at American Airlines for example

8:47

American Airlines Pilots did not have a

8:49

pay raise since 2019. they have lived

8:51

through all of this inflation without a

8:53

single pay raise now all of a sudden

8:54

they're getting a pay raise over the

8:56

next four years they're getting a

8:58

catch-up of a pay raise finally not

9:02

every American has had the benefit of

9:04

being able to catch up their income to

9:06

inflation yet and that is a real

9:07

sentiment that is happening now and it's

9:09

fair totally reasonable Chris Christie

9:12

suggests that Hunter Biden uh would

9:14

would face a 10-year minimum jail

9:17

sentence for the illegal possession of a

9:20

firearm especially while under the

9:21

influence of a controlled substance uh

9:23

this is actually a 10-year maximum which

9:25

is a big deal because usually you don't

9:27

get a maximum sentence you usually get

9:29

more of a mid-sentence which would be

9:30

like a three to four year in this case

9:32

uh whereas Chris Christie is implying

9:35

it's a minimum 10 which could actually

9:38

imply a midterm 15. that's a big

9:41

difference some people might say that

9:43

say that's you know slicing a dice in

9:45

here but it's just worth mentioning

9:46

there is a difference there DeSantis

9:49

suggests that he was the no lockdown

9:51

governor

9:52

he definitely lifted lockdowns earlier

9:55

than California did we were able to go

9:57

back to school in Florida I was a

9:58

resident of Florida for 16 years uh is

10:01

as early as the fall of 2020 however in

10:04

California it took a whole another year

10:06

to be able to go back to in-person

10:07

schooling this is detrimental to

10:10

children's education it was definitely a

10:11

problem

10:12

but DeSantis was all four lockdowns at

10:15

the beginning of covet in fact he

10:17

threatened to jail people who didn't

10:19

quarantine for two weeks coming in from

10:21

places like New York and Connecticut and

10:24

really for the first two months so March

10:27

and April of 2020 we had severe lockdown

10:30

orders in Florida as well however he was

10:32

very quick to start loosening these

10:35

lockdown orders so it is worth looking

10:36

at some of that in context of what

10:39

actually happened

10:40

uh and uh then there there is one uh

10:43

fact check I'm going to provide on

10:45

myself because yesterday I mentioned

10:47

that uh I I didn't appreciate that Vivek

10:49

dodged the question on gun control uh if

10:53

you go back and listen very closely he

10:56

he says it's not guns it's mental health

10:57

and then he goes down the argument of

10:58

Mental Health

11:00

when I first listened to it it sounded

11:01

like he was dodging the gun question

11:03

because I was looking for his stance on

11:06

the Second Amendment which we can look

11:07

up separately whatever uh and really his

11:09

argument boiled down to hey let's invest

11:11

in mental health uh now whether or not

11:14

that ultimately would prove to be

11:15

successful or not TBD it's been a while

11:18

since we've really focused on Mental

11:19

Health in America but it is actually a

11:21

premise that I believe in when I ran for

11:23

governor in California I ran under the

11:25

premise that hey we teach PE in schools

11:28

physical education why don't we have me

11:31

mental education why don't we have more

11:34

support for people who need help why is

11:36

it that a homeless person in California

11:38

for example is somehow supposed to sign

11:40

up for a mental health appointment with

11:42

a six to nine month waiting period well

11:44

no wonder they decline rapidly in six to

11:47

nine months because there are no support

11:48

services even available for them most of

11:50

the quality uh medical Mental Health

11:54

Care is in the private space that is

11:58

really unaffordable and inaccessible to

12:00

those who need it most so there

12:02

definitely are opportunities for

12:03

improvement here so these are my

12:05

thoughts on the fact check for debate if
