FULL TRANSCRIPT
hi
my name is valerie and i work as a
pharmacist in the manufacturing field
the role of a manufacturing pharmacist
to give you an idea is being involved in
research and development of medications
we help develop new medicines perform
tests
assure quality and ensure that
medication complies with regulations
my day begins at around eight in the
morning and i use the next half hour to
check my emails and schedule
to see what i've booked in for the day
ahead next would be my meetings with my
team
department or multidisciplinary groups
composed of
chemists biologists toxicologists
and even external visitors then i spent
the rest of my day fulfilling my duties
that were assigned to me
i chose pharmacy because this course
entails a wide range of knowledge and
skills
it is a mixture of both applied and
health sciences
and a bit of business and administration
which i find very interesting
the laboratory activities are fun and
challenging as well
here in pharmacy we get to mix chemicals
and observe their reactions
we get to test different substances and
analyze their purity and content
and even formulate products such as
ointments creams
syrups and of course my favorite makeup
it will also challenge your
interpersonal skills
as you become an intern in different
areas of the field
black community hospital and
manufacturing
okay so right now we are here in the
manufacturing laboratory
and with me is peter the head of the
production department
he will be helping me in demonstrating
to you how to make a sodium bicarbonate
tablet
a very common infection first weigh the
ingredients based on the formulation
mix the ingredients and sieve it into
fine powder
next is to granulate the product and
sieve again into finer particles
the mixture will now be subject to
drying and dry duration
and into final screening into a finer
seed
mix the product with a lubricant and
compress
and that's how you make a tablet
contrary to popular beliefs and
stereotypes pharmacists aren't just
salespeople
behind counters and drugstores in fact
to name a few career options
you can work in the hospital
manufacturing firms and laboratories
community research and development
regulatory affairs
and you may also venture into your own
business the growth and number of jobs
increasing around the world
not to mention high compensation abroad
so statistically there is no shortage of
job opportunities
as we are very much in demand always
have been and always will be
here in the manufacturing industry you
are employed for what you know
what you do and how well you perform and
riverside college gave me the knowledge
and skills that i need no matter what
field i choose to pursue in pharmacy
through their modern and complete
laboratory facilities
together with the right competencies
that riverside college has instilled in
me
i believe that i am a globally
competitive 21st century healthcare
