Over

0:03

2,000 years ago,

0:08

our sovereign God

0:13

came down to this earth

0:17

as a man.

0:28

And he died

0:30

on a cross.

[Music]

1:40

imagine

1:43

if all of history revolved olved around

1:45

a single event.

1:48

Then this is it.

1:51

It is the hinge upon which all of

1:54

history turns.

1:58

And long after this world has gone and

2:02

eternity has begun,

2:05

it will still be the center of heaven.

2:11

It all happened during those six hours

2:14

under a darkened sky on a hill called

2:18

Golgatha.

2:21

That day,

2:23

two worlds collided. The world of man

2:27

and the heart of God.

2:30

During those six intense hours, a single

2:34

act of brutal execution rewrote the

2:36

pages of history.

2:39

[Music]

2:41

What truly happened on that day?

2:45

Was it a payment or was it a punishment?

2:49

Was it fate or was it judgment?

2:53

Was it defeat or was it victory?

2:57

Was it a man who died or was it God?

3:03

Can God die?

3:08

This is the story of the atonement.

3:12

The story of how we were brought back to

3:14

God.

3:16

And it begins not with a simple

3:18

explanation,

3:20

but with a profound and terrible

3:22

question.

3:24

Why did Jesus have to die?

3:29

[Music]

3:40

The Christian doctrine of the atonement

3:43

is the heart of the gospel and it is

3:46

central to Christian theology.

3:50

The doctrine of the atonement seeks to

3:52

explain

3:54

how the death of Jesus

3:57

reconciles

3:58

humanity with God.

4:02

But this atonement is such a profound

4:05

mystery that it cannot be just explained

4:08

easily. It raises a lot of questions.

4:11

It's very very deep. And that is why

4:16

over the centuries

4:19

various theological models have emerged

4:23

to help Christians understand what Jesus

4:27

accomplished on the cross.

4:32

God is infinitely holy while we are

4:36

extremely fallen and sinful and we can

4:40

never ever approach this holy God. We

4:44

heard about him in the miniseries we

4:46

just concluded.

4:48

[Music]

4:50

Nonetheless,

4:52

an impossible program of reconciliation

4:55

was launched through the life, death and

4:58

resurrection of Jesus Christ

5:02

and that is the atonement.

5:07

The word atonement itself comes from the

5:10

middle English phrase at one minute

5:15

symbolizing

5:17

a restored unity with God.

5:22

This unity with God that Adam lost in

5:24

the Garden of Eden is restored through

5:27

Calvary.

5:31

It's very sad that many Christians

5:35

think that the narrative of the cross is

5:39

just a basic topic for new Christians.

5:44

There are many Christians I know who

5:46

think that Jesus died merely to save us

5:50

from sin.

5:52

That is all the gospel is about. Jesus

5:54

died for the sinners. And because of

5:56

this shallow attitude, shallow

5:59

understanding of the sacrifice of

6:00

Christ, this greatest truth of

6:03

Christianity has been compromised and

6:06

ignored.

6:09

But for the few faithful pastors who are

6:13

still preaching the gospel, this truth

6:16

might have almost been lost.

6:23

Today Christianity hardly resembles the

6:26

original historic Christianity of the

6:29

apostles. That is how much it has

6:32

deviated and changed.

6:35

There are millions today who think they

6:38

are Christians because they are either

6:40

born to Christian parents or at some

6:42

point decided to go to church. They

6:45

think they are Christians because they

6:47

said the sinner's prayer.

6:51

A few years ago when God began to deal

6:53

with me, I became quite concerned

6:56

because I realized that many many church

7:00

members were not really converted. Even

7:03

I myself had a false conversion as I

7:07

shared with you all many times.

7:11

So with grave concern, I began to go

7:14

around asking church members to tell me

7:17

their conversion story.

7:21

How were you saved? I asked them.

7:24

I was genuinely seeking to know their

7:28

Christian beginning.

7:34

And I was shocked to find out that

7:37

almost 100% of those who professed that

7:41

they were believers for over 30 years

7:44

had no conversion at all.

7:47

Almost every one of them said the same

7:50

thing.

7:52

When I was 18 years old, I decided to

7:54

give my heart to Jesus. Another person

7:57

said, "One day I thought, let me become

8:01

a Christian."

8:04

Christianity is not about our decision

8:07

for Christ.

8:09

It's not something we do.

8:12

Christianity is something that is done

8:14

to us by God himself.

8:18

So I became greatly concerned that there

8:20

are thousands upon thousands of u let's

8:24

call them churchgoers.

8:27

They had never experienced the blessings

8:29

of the atonement.

8:32

I found that most of them simply want to

8:35

be blessed materially on earth. They

8:39

want their problems to be solved. They

8:41

want to live a happy life and then live

8:44

in some utopia in heaven.

8:48

My friend, God is better than that.

8:52

Surely God wants to bless you not just

8:55

financially and materially but in every

8:58

possible way.

9:00

Listen to what Paul says.

9:04

He who did not spare his own son but

9:07

delivered him over for us all.

9:10

How will he not also with him freely

9:14

give us all things?

9:16

Did you know that with him?

9:19

That is why it is so important for us to

9:22

know the story of Jesus and the cross.

9:27

So in order to understand the most

9:30

important truth of the atonement,

9:33

let us start from the beginning.

9:37

Heat. Heat.

[Applause]

10:08

When you think about God, how do you

10:10

picture him in your minds?

10:14

Is he old and gray-haired?

10:17

Do you see him with a long beard?

10:22

Does he have sharp features,

10:26

brown or blue eyes?

10:29

And I'm curious,

10:31

does he ever smile?

10:35

Or is he always serious and grave?

10:40

And how big is he? Is he bigger than the

10:42

universe?

10:45

And why is he so distant? Why doesn't he

10:49

speak more clearly?

10:52

I'm sure we would all love to see God.

10:57

But as we heard in the previous series,

11:00

the saints in the Bible were really

11:03

afraid to look upon God.

11:05

Not because he was evil or hot-tempered

11:09

or cruel or some kind of a monster.

11:14

No, the saints knew exactly why they

11:17

could not look upon him.

11:20

They knew that if they did, but glimpses

11:23

face, they would die and they were right

11:26

because God is so exceedingly holy and

11:30

we are utterly sinful.

11:35

And that is why Isaiah reacted like that

11:38

in God's presence.

11:41

He felt utterly exposed and wretched

11:44

before God.

11:48

When Moses, the friend of God, asked

11:51

God, "Can I see your glory?"

11:57

God told him, "No,

11:59

you cannot see my face. For if anyone

12:03

sees me, they will die. They will die.

12:05

They will die. They will die."

12:13

Today

12:15

a great number of Christians have got

12:17

rid of the fundamental truth that God is

12:21

holy.

12:22

Christianity now has a different God, a

12:25

new God, a re-imaged God. This new God

12:29

of Christianity is an elderly loving

12:33

grandfather who sits in a rocking chair

12:36

and coups over his children all day.

12:42

This loving God never says no.

12:46

He always says yes to our requests.

12:54

So what does God really look like? Is he

12:57

attractive or terrifying? Does he look

13:00

like a saint or a celebrity?

13:03

Ghostly or guruike?

13:09

When I was young, maybe around 17, I

13:12

became aware of a desire to know God.

13:17

This was not some passing fantasy. It

13:20

was a seed, a divine seed planted in my

13:23

heart.

13:25

I also realized that this passion to

13:27

know God was way too strong to be my

13:30

own.

13:32

I understood that God was somehow

13:34

reaching out to me, knocking at the door

13:37

of my heart, waking me up from my

13:41

stuper.

13:43

And that's when I found a passage in the

13:45

Bible that described my situation. These

13:49

are the words of the bride of Christ

13:51

recorded in the Songs of Solomon.

13:54

This scenario describes the state of the

13:56

bride long before she realized the value

14:00

of Jesus.

14:06

>> I was asleep, but my heart was awake. A

14:09

voice, my beloved was knocking.

14:12

>> Open to me, my sister, my darling, my

14:14

dove, my perfect one. For my head is

14:17

drenched with dew, my locks with the

14:19

damp of the night.

14:21

>> I have taken off my dress. How can I put

14:23

it on again? I have washed my feet. How

14:26

can I dirty them again? My beloved

14:29

extended his hand through the opening,

14:31

and my feelings were aroused for him. I

14:34

arose to open to my beloved, and my

14:36

hands dripped with myrr, and my fingers

14:39

with liquid myrr on the handles of the

14:41

bolt. I opened to my beloved, but my

14:45

beloved had turned away and had gone.

14:48

My heart went out to him as he spoke. I

14:51

searched for him but I did not find him.

14:53

I called him but he did not answer me.

14:56

>> This is exactly where I found myself.

15:01

God had been reaching out to me for a

15:03

while. But by the time I got up and went

15:06

after him, he was gone.

15:10

The more I sought him, the more distant

15:14

he seemed. And I remember those days.

15:18

My heart was breaking because I really

15:22

wanted him. But he was too elusive, too

15:26

hidden, too transcendent.

15:29

I could never reach him.

15:32

[Music]

15:52

But somewhere along the way, I met some

15:56

great saints of God. They were admired

16:00

in church as gifted and mightily

16:02

anointed.

16:04

Their prophecies were dynamic and

16:06

powerful. They spoke about the love of

16:09

God. They spent much time in prayer and

16:12

God spoke to them. And of course I

16:17

envied them. And because I could not see

16:20

God myself,

16:22

I viewed him through the lens of these

16:25

saints.

16:28

They became a thumbnail impression of

16:30

the God whom I could not know.

16:34

Little by little as I observed them I

16:38

began to form a picture of God in my

16:41

head.

16:43

Their attitude,

16:46

their expressions,

16:48

their conduct, their mannerisms, their

16:52

attire, their reactions,

16:55

their words, their life choices.

16:59

These were all the pieces of the jigsaw

17:02

that I assembled and silently

17:06

constructed an image of God in my head.

17:11

And that is where all my confusion

17:14

began.

17:21

Because we say God is love.

17:24

But many of these saints who were on

17:27

fire for God had fiery tempers too.

17:31

Their anointing was awesome, but their

17:34

anger was awful.

17:38

They were saints.

17:40

Yet somehow I never sensed loneliness

17:45

but loftiness.

17:47

When I looked at them, I found not

17:50

humility but highmindedness.

17:54

They always appeared condescending,

17:57

looking down at everyone.

18:00

We say God is gentle.

18:03

But I found these saints bossy and

18:06

controlling.

18:07

They always expected

18:10

implicit obedience.

18:14

We say God is gracious and kind and

18:17

tender. But these role models of

18:20

saintliness,

18:22

they hardly smiled. In fact, I felt they

18:26

were making an effort to appear

18:28

unfriendly because being unfriendly

18:32

somehow made you appear godly.

18:37

This made me understand that we have a

18:40

god who never smiles,

18:43

a god who always frowns.

18:47

These saints were aloof and cold and

18:50

distant. And so I perceived God to be

18:54

like that.

18:57

Can you imagine how confused and scared

19:00

a young and impressionable teenager

19:03

would become of such a god? I really

19:06

became scared of him. My Christian

19:10

worldview never developed. I could not

19:13

make out what Christian life was really

19:16

all about. When the very role models of

19:20

God who claim to be close to his heart

19:22

are like this,

19:24

then our whole theology goes off the

19:27

rails.

19:32

So tell me, what was wrong with these

19:35

people? Was something wrong with their

19:38

salvation?

19:40

I did not think so. Did they not love

19:44

Christ?

19:46

Well, I thought they did. Were they

19:49

hypocrites and Pharisees?

19:52

I don't think so. They seem to be

19:55

sincere and passionate.

19:59

So then what really was wrong?

20:03

If I must say it in one line, it is

20:06

this.

20:09

Theirs was a Christianity without the

20:12

cross.

20:17

They did not understand the cross at

20:20

all. I grew up never knowing the

20:24

importance of Calvary because nobody

20:26

around me talked about the cross.

20:30

When you begin your Christian life

20:32

without the gospel, without a

20:34

fundamental teaching of the cross,

20:36

without understanding why Jesus came and

20:38

died for us,

20:41

then what you have is no longer

20:44

Christianity, but counterfeit

20:47

Christianity.

20:50

Fake diamonds look real.

20:54

They can fool you easily.

20:57

There is something genuinely fake called

21:01

fake Christianity. It is a fake diamond.

21:06

Yes, it looks authentic. It looks

21:09

precious. You attend church regularly.

21:12

You read the Bible daily. You say your

21:15

prayers faithfully. You sing a lot of

21:17

hymns. You speak in tongues. You have a

21:19

disciplined life. You know your

21:21

doctrine. You pay your tithes. And you

21:23

seem very moral and godly and holy. Yes.

21:27

Yes. It all looks authentic.

21:30

And yet that is not Christianity.

21:35

My dear friend, have you never read the

21:38

New Testament? Both Jesus and Paul

21:41

constantly warned about this.

21:44

They warned about a religion of good

21:46

works and righteousness.

21:49

We believe that by being righteous we

21:53

please God.

21:55

There are many such religious groups

21:57

that use the Bible but their

22:00

interpretation of the Bible and their

22:02

worldview is like a building without a

22:05

foundation.

22:08

We are fooled by the attractive

22:10

structure, the marvelous edifice, not

22:14

realizing that something huge is

22:17

missing.

22:24

The following illustration is really

22:27

going to help you.

22:35

[Music]

23:05

Consider a father who loves his

23:07

daughter.

23:09

Why does he love her? What is the basis

23:13

of his love for her?

23:15

Is it a conditional love? Does he tell

23:18

her? Listen, girl. When you learn to

23:21

help mommy with household chores and you

23:24

tidy your bed and dust the furniture and

23:26

wash the dishes and clean the toilet and

23:29

do your homework,

23:31

then I will accept you as my daughter

23:35

and give you a bed to sleep in my house.

23:38

Is this what he tells her? Does it sound

23:42

ridiculous to you?

23:45

Well, this is a picture of salvation by

23:49

good works.

23:51

And do you know how many Christians are

23:54

going down this road trying to win their

23:57

father's heart by their good deeds?

24:01

They began their Christian journey on

24:04

the wrong road.

24:06

And listen,

24:08

a wrong road does not lead to the right

24:11

destination no matter how much you pray

24:13

and fast and believe.

24:18

So what is the right way?

24:22

The only way is salvation by grace

24:27

alone.

24:30

Think of the father and daughter again.

24:34

Here are some facts for you.

24:37

The girl plays no part in her birth.

24:41

Her birth is the decision of her

24:43

parents. She's not forced upon her

24:46

father by an agency. Her birth is her

24:49

father's choice, his free will. And he

24:53

begins to love her long before she's

24:55

born, before she even senses his

24:58

presence.

25:00

And after she is born, he delights in

25:03

her. She may not be pretty, but his eyes

25:06

are wide in admiration. She hasn't even

25:09

begun to crawl, but look how excited he

25:12

is over her. Now, mind you, she's not

25:17

easy. She's quite a handful.

25:20

After she learns to walk, she becomes

25:22

really naughty and demanding and

25:25

controlling.

25:27

She sleeps whenever she wants and gets

25:30

up in the middle of the night and wants

25:32

to play. She loves messing up the house.

25:36

Yet he patiently cleans after her. He

25:39

picks up all the toys and she feels his

25:44

care. She senses how much he loves her.

25:48

She always needs nappy changing. She

25:50

vomits on his best suit. She scratches

25:54

and screams and demands that he carry

25:56

her. She is stubborn and loud and breaks

25:59

things and scribbles on the walls and

26:01

cries all night. But what is more

26:04

powerful than all these things is his

26:07

love for her.

26:09

He never complains, never regrets his

26:13

choice because his daughter is too

26:18

precious to him.

26:20

And then as she grows, he begins to

26:23

educate her and train her to be

26:25

responsible and do good works. Yes, she

26:29

does good works, but not to win his

26:33

heart, but because he has won her heart.

26:37

She loves it. And little by little, she

26:40

grows into a beautiful woman of God.

26:46

Imagine

26:48

how shocked I was when I heard a man of

26:52

God preach this. I had an existential

26:55

crisis.

26:58

I realized that all my life I had

27:00

misunderstood God. I had listened to

27:04

wrong ideas and teachings and watched

27:06

the lives of saints who misrepresented

27:09

God. And I had absorbed unsound ideas

27:12

and concepts of God from the radical

27:15

culture of a Christian religion of works

27:18

and self-righteousness.

27:20

I had worked hard all my life to get

27:24

God's attention, to please him, to win

27:27

his heart, not realizing that he was my

27:31

father who loved me.

27:35

This is called legalistic Christianity.

27:40

It was a rewardbased

27:42

system.

27:44

If you follow the rules, then you are

27:46

rewarded with his love.

27:49

The more obedient you are, the more you

27:52

earn his love.

27:56

How different this is from the

27:59

illustration of the loving father and

28:01

his naughty daughter.

28:07

[Music]

28:13

Does this little girl do anything to win

28:15

the father's heart?

28:18

Oh, if we can increase or improve God's

28:22

love toward us in any way, then do you

28:25

know what that means? It means his love

28:27

was not complete in the first place.

28:31

Then he is not God.

28:37

[Music]

28:39

My dear friends, do you know what the

28:42

first message of Christ after his

28:44

resurrection was? The first thing that

28:47

Jesus spoke to Mary Magdalene after his

28:50

resurrection was this. Go find my

28:54

brothers and tell them, I am ascending

28:57

to my father and your father. To my God

29:01

and your God.

29:04

The first message of the New Testament

29:06

was that the father of Jesus was now our

29:10

father. The God of the Bible, the father

29:13

of our Lord Jesus Christ is just like

29:16

the father of this girl.

29:20

He loved us dearly long before we were

29:23

conceived.

29:24

He birthed us of his own will. He

29:27

forgave our sins of his own kindness. He

29:31

gave us his holy spirit as a free gift.

29:34

We did not earn it. We did not qualify

29:37

or become worthy of it. There were no

29:41

works on our part at all. There is

29:44

nothing you earn by working for it by

29:46

being good enough for it. You don't have

29:49

to go to church or read the Bible. You

29:52

do not have to pray or pay your tithes.

29:54

You do not have to make any vows or

29:57

change your clothes or remove your

29:58

makeup or put away your jewelry. You do

30:01

not have to stop being worldly or become

30:04

a very good person before God can love

30:07

you.

30:09

No matter how bad you are, he is now

30:12

your father, your loving dad.

30:17

This is the miracle of reconciliation

30:20

that the atonement brings.

30:23

You just believe it because the Bible

30:25

says so.

30:27

God loves you and embraces you. And

30:30

there begins your wonderful journey of

30:33

joy.

30:36

And thereafter your father trains you to

30:39

become responsible and mature. And do

30:43

you know that there is a sign that shows

30:45

you are going the right way?

30:48

And that sign is that you begin to do

30:51

things not because you have to, but

30:54

because you love to.

30:56

There are things that are wrong in us

30:59

naturally.

31:01

And because this father loves you and me

31:03

so much, he will lovingly correct us and

31:07

we obey him because we love him.

31:11

Yes, sometimes it may be hard. We may

31:15

struggle. We may fall and this may go on

31:19

for a long time but it's okay. We can be

31:23

honest with him and tell him how hard it

31:25

is. He is very very patient. We don't

31:29

have to hide anything from him. We can

31:32

openly and honestly share our deepest

31:35

and most embarrassing and shameful

31:38

secrets with him. And his love never

31:41

changes.

31:48

[Music]

32:00

All my life I tried to win God's

32:02

affection by being good. But I could

32:06

never be good enough.

32:10

Church was never a place where I enjoyed

32:13

God and learned more about him.

32:17

Church was never a place where I could

32:19

be excited in the company of people who

32:21

love God. Rather, do you know how it was

32:25

for me? It was a place where I felt

32:28

scared of God. I was always shamed and

32:32

guilted because of my failures. And then

32:35

I was forced to run to a god. Yet I was

32:40

running from him.

32:42

I was terrified of him, but I was forced

32:45

to praise him for how good he was.

32:49

I was constantly trying to earn my

32:51

salvation, but I could never feel saved.

32:55

How I wish I knew the simple

32:59

illustration of the father and his

33:01

daughter. Then I would have understood

33:03

this simple but powerful truth straight

33:06

away that good works will never bring us

33:10

to true salvation. But true salvation

33:15

will bring us to good works. And this is

33:18

what Paul meant by you are saved unto

33:22

good works.

33:29

[Music]

33:45

So how wonderful it is to know our

33:48

father like this.

33:54

Have you ever tried to assemble a jigsaw

33:56

puzzle of a thousand pieces

34:00

and after hours and hours of hard work,

34:03

you discover that one or two pieces are

34:06

missing?

34:07

>> Oh no.

34:08

>> Yes. One piece lies somewhere under a

34:12

bed or in a couch.

34:16

Yes. In my analogy of the father and the

34:19

daughter,

34:21

a big piece is missing.

34:24

I didn't tell you.

34:27

Although he is our loving father and we

34:30

are his children.

34:32

What you and I and every man, woman,

34:36

boy, and girl needs to know is this that

34:40

by nature

34:42

we are enemies of God even though we are

34:45

his children.

34:49

We are born that way because of Adam. We

34:53

were born in the enemy camp. We did not

34:56

land in the wrong camp as innocent

34:58

prisoners. No, we were born guilty and

35:02

depraved and completely cut off from

35:04

God.

35:06

And as we grew, our rebellion grew, our

35:09

sinfulness grew, our hatred of God grew.

35:13

By default, we want to be free from God

35:16

and godliness.

35:19

We do not want this God. We are stubborn

35:22

and self-filled. We do not want anything

35:26

or anyone to control us or correct us.

35:29

We want to be free and independent and

35:33

autonomous. We want to do whatever we

35:36

like to do to be in a place where we can

35:38

do whatever we feel like live as we

35:42

like. We are constantly trying to break

35:44

free from God and his sovereignty. We

35:49

are longing for a place where total

35:51

freedom from God oh is a reality and

35:55

good news. There is such a place. We can

35:59

be free from God forever and ever in

36:01

this place called hell.

36:08

But no, there is a father who steps in.

36:13

A father who loves us so much that he

36:15

would rather die than let us perish.

36:19

And so he devised a plan to help us all.

36:23

And this plan is the atonement.

36:29

The atonement is the missing piece in

36:31

the puzzle. The atonement is God's

36:34

provision to bridge the gap between an

36:37

infinitely holy God and totally wretched

36:42

sinners.

36:44

That gap between God and us, it hurts

36:48

us.

36:49

That gap is the reason for most of our

36:52

problems.

36:55

Our problems are simply a symptom of a

36:59

deeper underlying issue and that is we

37:04

are far from God.

37:07

Many Christians are hurt and troubled

37:11

and broken. Many are sick.

37:14

Some travel for thousands of miles to go

37:17

to some prophet who can lay his hands on

37:19

them and heal them.

37:22

And what happens

37:24

in the end?

37:26

The prophets get richer and these

37:30

victims simply continue in their abject

37:33

problems.

37:35

God is grieved with such prophets and

37:38

healers.

37:39

Listen to what he says through prophet

37:42

Jeremiah.

37:47

From the least to the greatest, their

37:50

lives are ruled by greed. From prophets

37:54

to priests, they are all frauds. They

37:58

offer superficial treatments for my

38:01

people's mortal wound. They give

38:04

asurances of peace when there is no

38:06

peace.

38:12

Now what about the atonement?

38:15

Ha,

38:17

this story is either totally bypassed or

38:21

casually or superficially mentioned.

38:25

Gone are the days when the truth about

38:27

the cross would be preached.

38:30

Now, many preachers preach about

38:33

themselves, about how to obtain God's

38:36

blessings, about becoming wealthy and

38:39

great in this world. Or they turn church

38:42

into a place of entertainment. Some

38:45

others promote Christianity as a

38:46

religion. So they preach about a

38:49

controlling God to whom you must submit,

38:52

whom you must be terrified of, a God

38:55

whose rules you must obey. in crave and

39:00

fear and whom you must please if you

39:04

want to escape hell.

39:07

And what is your greatest hope? To spend

39:10

your miserable eternity in a miserable

39:14

heaven unto this evercontrolling God.

39:19

And here's another thing. The gospel of

39:23

the cross has been cunningly twisted by

39:25

many progressive preachers. They teach

39:29

that the need for a cross makes God

39:32

appear to be a cruel cosmic monster.

39:36

They argue like this. They say if God is

39:39

our father, then why does he need a

39:42

blood sacrifice to forgive us? Why can't

39:46

he just forgive us like we forgive all

39:49

those who wrong us?

39:51

And then what do they teach? They say

39:54

that the cross was not the original plan

39:56

of God, but that it was men who

39:59

crucified Jesus.

40:02

Can you see what is happening? Satan is

40:06

really corrupting and twisting the

40:09

truths of the Bible. And that is why we

40:12

must return to our Bibles and not books

40:15

written by men.

40:18

The atonement is the Bible central

40:20

message. It is all about how sinners

40:23

need to be reconciled to God through the

40:25

atoning sacrifice of Jesus. This is the

40:29

heart of the gospel. The story of the

40:31

father and his daughter. It is your

40:34

story. My story history.

40:38

Our story begins where we are that girl

40:41

as a prodigal daughter. We are born as

40:45

God's estranged prodigal children as

40:48

rebels.

40:49

This is the message right from Genesis.

40:53

The son and daughter that is Adam and

40:55

Eve rebelled in the garden and lost

40:57

their glory and their relationship with

40:59

the father. Filled with shame and guilt,

41:02

they tried to cover up their nakedness

41:05

and their sin. But God removed that

41:08

covering of fig leaves and gave them the

41:10

skin of an animal that was killed. What

41:13

was the message in that act?

41:16

You cannot cover your sinfulness with

41:18

fig leaves of good works and then come

41:21

before God and say hello God. No, a life

41:25

has to be sacrificed to give you a true

41:28

covering.

41:29

So right from the beginning, God was

41:32

pointing at the cross and telling us not

41:35

to cover up our sins but to come to

41:37

Calvary.

41:40

Every Old Testament sacrifice points to

41:42

the cross.

41:44

If we do not understand the cross, then

41:48

we are finished. The rest of our

41:51

Christianity, no matter how many years

41:54

and how established, no matter how

41:56

beautiful our denomination, our

41:58

churches, our Christianity will be

42:01

completely flawed. And that is the main

42:04

problem today.

42:07

We have left the foundation of the rock

42:10

and we are building upon sea sands.

42:15

Dear friend, the atonement is not a

42:18

university course or philosophy or

42:21

history that must be grasped

42:24

intellectually.

42:25

It is much more than mere doctrine.

42:30

The gospel

42:33

is the best thing that could ever happen

42:36

to you.

42:38

And may God give us a clear vision of

42:41

the cross as we continue to study

42:45

the atonement.
