0:03

when it comes to your faith?

0:04

Maybe you've been confused about what's true

0:07

or not true and who you should trust.

0:10

Maybe you were rattled by something you heard

0:12

in a TikTok and it sparked some doubts.

0:15

Or maybe someone said something to you

0:17

or about you that really hurt

0:20

and now that's the soundtrack you hear

0:21

in your mind every time you set out to try something new.

0:25

Is it possible to find healing

0:28

and actually have confidence in what we believe?

0:31

You'll have to stick around

0:32

and we'll hash it all out together.

0:34

(upbeat music)

0:38

Well, hello fellow Bible nerds.

0:39

I am excited to get to hang out with you all today,

0:43

because we're starting a new series.

0:45

Together over the next few weeks,

0:47

we're gonna take a deep dive,

0:49

into what is quickly becoming,

0:50

one of my personal favorite books of the Bible.

0:54

But before we get there,

0:56

as all of us legit Bible nerds know

0:59

when we set out to read the Bible,

1:01

we approach it with humility and curiosity

1:04

by remembering the big idea that Jesus is king

1:08

and context is everything.

1:11

So, today we're going to apply that filter

1:14

to the letter that we call 1st John.

1:18

And here's what you need to know about 1st John.

1:20

This letter was written to a group of Jesus followers

1:23

in the middle of a really unsettling situation.

1:27

People around them were abandoning their faith

1:30

in Jesus left and right.

1:32

These people were struggling to try

1:34

and match up the wisdom of Greek culture

1:38

with the message they had received about their savior.

1:41

And as a result

1:42

they kind of just lived however they wanted to,

1:45

amidst all the confusion.

1:47

They were claiming to know God and belong to him,

1:51

but they didn't actually act like it at all.

1:54

They thought that they were better than everyone else

1:57

and eventually they left their community

2:00

and that community of believers

2:02

that they left behind was hurt and confused,

2:06

about what was even true anymore.

2:08

Can you relate to that?

2:10

Have you ever had a group of friends

2:12

that you were a part of actually just fall apart

2:15

and you've had to navigate the hurt and confusion

2:19

that came with that?

2:20

I know I have.

2:22

When I was in eighth grade,

2:24

I had a really solid group of friends come together.

2:27

It was like all of a sudden I had a place to belong.

2:31

I had people who were fun to be around,

2:33

who would do Bible study with me

2:34

and who helped me grow in my walk with Jesus.

2:37

We did everything together.

2:39

We served together,

2:40

we went to youth group stuff together

2:42

and we goofed off a whole bunch as well.

2:45

But as we continued to grow up,

2:47

things didn't stay so perfect.

2:50

Some of us got into relationships that weren't the best

2:52

and it pulled us away from community.

2:55

Some of us fell into bad influences at school

2:59

that ended up causing a lot of harm.

3:02

And short of long,

3:03

this group of people that I loved being a part of fell apart

3:07

in front of my eyes

3:09

and it left me feeling unsettled and confused.

3:13

What did I need to know to move forward?

3:16

What did the people who got

3:18

the letter of 1st John need to hear in those moments?

3:21

Well, this is what John says to start off his letter.

3:25

"We proclaim to you the one who existed from the beginning,

3:29

"whom we have heard and seen.

3:32

"We saw him with our own eyes,

3:34

"touched him with our own hands.

3:36

"He is the word of life,

3:38

"the one who is life itself was revealed to us.

3:41

"And we have seen him and now we testify

3:44

"and proclaim to you that he is the one who is eternal life.

3:47

"He was with the Father and he was revealed to us.

3:51

"We proclaimed to you what we ourselves have actually seen

3:54

"and heard so that you could have fellowship with us.

3:57

"And our fellowship

3:58

"is with the Father and his son, Jesus Christ.

4:01

"We are writing these things,

4:02

"so that you may fully share our joy."

4:06

This is the intro to the book of 1st John.

4:09

And as we look at it today,

4:11

let's remember the principles that we have

4:13

for reading the Bible wisely.

4:16

And first things first,

4:18

the Bible is God's word for us,

4:20

but it wasn't originally written to us.

4:23

So, that leads us to ask a couple of questions.

4:25

Who is the author?

4:27

Who is the audience and why did they write what they wrote?

4:32

Well, what we can learn from this intro

4:34

is that the author was someone who was an eyewitness

4:37

to the life of Jesus.

4:39

And in this case it was the Apostle John,

4:42

one of Jesus' closest disciples.

4:45

This was a guy who walked up close and personal with Jesus,

4:48

throughout his entire ministry here on Earth.

4:51

And John makes a pretty big deal

4:54

of his personal experience with Jesus in this letter.

4:57

And I want you to think about that,

4:58

while we move on to the next question,

5:00

which is who's the audience?

5:03

Well, we talked about how this letter was written

5:04

to a group of people whose community had just fallen apart

5:09

and it looked like their faith was gonna fall apart with it.

5:11

So, why did John write it?

5:14

Well, as we move through this book

5:16

what we're gonna discover

5:17

is that John wrote this letter to help

5:19

that community find healing and confidence

5:22

by recommitting themselves to be true followers of Jesus.

5:27

I love verse four in that intro,

5:30

where John says that the letter was written,

5:32

so that we could fully share in the joy

5:35

that comes from knowing Jesus Christ personally,

5:38

like John did.

5:40

And that's the context.

5:42

And here's the thing,

5:42

this book leads us to Jesus right from the very beginning,

5:47

because John is setting out

5:48

to remind this confused community

5:51

that the message about Jesus that they heard at first

5:55

is still really good news

5:59

and it's news because Jesus actually came

6:02

and entered history.

6:03

He lived and loved and taught and died and rose again.

6:08

And there were people like John who witnessed all of that.

6:12

And and that makes it news.

6:14

And Jesus's entrance into history,

6:16

changed absolutely everything for the better.

6:20

That's why it's good,

6:22

because Jesus showed us in person

6:24

what God and his love are really like.

6:28

Said another way,

6:30

because of Jesus we can know what God is like

6:33

and because we can know what God is like,

6:35

we can know what love really is.

6:39

This is what John says following that introduction.

6:42

"This is a message we heard from Jesus

6:45

"and now we declare it to you.

6:47

'God is light and there is no darkness in him at all.'

6:52

"So we're lying if we say we have fellowship with God,

6:54

"but go on living in spiritual darkness.

6:57

"We're not practicing the truth.

6:59

"But if we are living in the light as God is in the light,

7:03

"then we have fellowship with each other

7:04

"and the blood of Jesus,

7:06

"his son cleanses us from all sin."

7:09

So, as John's saying that to walk with Jesus,

7:12

we literally physically have to walk

7:14

in the light at all times.

7:16

Like no flashlights for us?

7:19

No, because when we read the Bible we read it literally,

7:23

not just literally.

7:24

And John uses these metaphors to show his readers

7:27

that because of Jesus we can have clarity and intimacy,

7:32

instead of confusion and isolation.

7:35

One of the central verses in 1st John

7:38

is found in chapter four verse 19,

7:43

which says, "We love each other because he loved us first.

7:48

"We can see what real love is,

7:50

"because God showed us through the person of Jesus."

7:54

He didn't stay at a distance and make us guess how he felt

7:58

or if he was mad or happy or anything in between.

8:02

Now, he came in person

8:04

and made himself known to us through Jesus.

8:08

This is 1st John 4:9 through 10.

8:11

"God showed us how much he loved us

8:14

"by sending his one and only son into the world,

8:17

"so that we might have eternal life through him.

8:20

"This is real love,

8:23

"not that we loved God,

8:25

"but that he loved us and sent his son as a sacrifice

8:28

"to take away our sins."

8:31

We don't have to be confused,

8:33

about where we stand with God or how to live.

8:36

John actually helps us make that connection

8:39

when he says in the very next verse,

8:41

"Dear friends,

8:42

"since God loved us that much,

8:46

"we surely ought to love each other."

8:49

That's why it's important to read the Bible in passages,

8:53

not just pieces,

8:54

'cause those connections are key.

8:57

So, as a recap throughout this letter,

8:59

John reminds us of the family that we are invited into

9:04

and what it looks like to actually be a member of it.

9:07

Because sometimes when it feels like everything

9:09

is falling apart,

9:11

we just need to be reminded that it's not actually

9:13

that complicated and we aren't actually alone.

9:17

This letter is clear and at times really confrontational,

9:21

because the Bible was written to transform us

9:24

and not just inform us.

9:26

It speaks to us today

9:28

and invites us to become more like Jesus.

9:31

So, what can we do now?

9:33

I would challenge you guys to start reading 1st John,

9:36

it's only five chapters long.

9:38

So, just take a chapter a day for the rest of the week

9:41

and study it

9:42

and see what God wants to say to you through this letter.

9:45

And then if you get stuck

9:47

or need a reminder about any of these principles,

9:50

about reading the Bible wisely,

9:52

go ahead and check out the "Bible Nerds 101" playlist

9:55

and just brush up on your skills.

9:57

And as always,

9:58

keep tuning into "Bible Nerds,"

10:00

because we love to process with all of you

10:03

and we're gonna keep digging apart this letter

10:05

of 1st John together.

10:07

So, with all that being said,

10:08

keep on reading and stay nerdy.
