with me Stephanie bearing Haley your

0:09

professional podcasting resource for

0:10

staying on Trend and connecting you to

0:13

the news that matters in the retail

0:14

world let's talk a little shop

0:18

hello and welcome to another episode of

0:20

let's talk a little shop I'm your host

0:22

Stephanie barangeli and joining me today

0:24

is Ben Salzman with Kitty Hawk kites Ben

0:28

welcome to the show ah thanks so much

0:30

for having me Stephanie but we want to

0:33

know a little bit more about you so go

0:35

ahead we want to see how did you come to

0:37

be in this role and who is Ben so yeah

0:40

I've uh been the marketing director here

0:42

for about five years

0:44

um so obviously we're located in the

0:45

Outer Banks very near Kitty Hawk we're

0:48

the Wright brothers first flew

0:50

um so I transplanted here from New York

0:53

my my wife and I decided to move down

0:55

here about five years ago okay students

0:58

a wedding cake business and I've been a

1:00

marketing professional for a while I was

1:01

actually in the architecture industry

1:03

for about 12 years

1:05

um heading out marketing departments for

1:07

a few of um the largest architecture

1:10

firms in the world

1:11

um I work for the firm that designed the

1:13

new World Trade Center for instance

1:15

um it's amazing yeah yeah no it was it's

1:18

a it was a great time I learned a lot

1:20

about architecture I always said that I

1:22

was like an architect because I had to

1:24

talk about architecture the way

1:25

Architects do but I didn't have any

1:27

specialized training

1:29

um but yeah I was we were looking for a

1:31

change uh we got married in the Outer

1:33

Banks

1:34

a few years before we we moved down here

1:37

we had been visiting for years you know

1:40

this was a place where we would vacation

1:41

with our family

1:42

um so when it was you know time to pick

1:46

a new location this just made a lot of

1:48

sense to us a very popular wedding

1:50

destination so my wife who makes wedding

1:52

cakes this was a kind of a no-brainer

1:55

place for her business

1:57

um and I was a kite flyer because when I

1:59

would vacation here I would pick up

2:01

kites at Kitty Hawk kites typically a

2:03

new one every year different kinds of

2:05

stunt kites and I just got hooked and I

2:08

met the president and CEO on the hill um

2:12

that was we call it which is uh the

2:14

dunes of jockey's Ridge there was a Kite

2:16

Festival going on we struck up a

2:17

conversation and lo and behold here I am

2:20

I have never flown a kite before and I'm

2:23

disappointed to say that I haven't done

2:25

it and my two kids have not done it so

2:27

if we ever make our way your direction

2:29

you're gonna have to teach us how to do

2:31

it because I feel like a terrible parent

2:33

for it

2:34

well it really is a fun activity

2:37

um and it's so easy to do so let's get

2:39

one in your hands as quickly as possible

2:41

no so now tell me a little bit about

2:44

Kitty Hawk kites because that's you have

2:46

a very unique you have a dual approach

2:48

because you've got the retail space but

2:50

then you also have this amazing

2:52

adventure recreational so let's dig into

2:54

the retail stores first and tell us a

2:56

little bit more about that

2:58

sure so we have 28 brick and mortar

3:00

stores okay we actually have three major

3:03

brands so we've got Kitty Hawk kites

3:06

which is kind of the umbrella brand for

3:07

everything that we do but we also have

3:09

Kitty Hawk surf company and we operate a

3:12

number of Standalone life is good shops

3:14

we're a licensed partner of theirs as

3:17

well so

3:18

um we operate actually from Maine to

3:20

Florida we we started here in the Outer

3:22

Banks but we've we've expanded into

3:24

Coastal communities on the east coast of

3:26

the US that makes sense for us

3:29

um and yeah we're like a family friendly

3:31

Vibe right you you go to the beach and

3:34

you know you're looking for a place to

3:36

grab a t-shirt grab a kite maybe a

3:39

jigsaw puzzle for a rainy day sweatshirt

3:41

for Grandma who couldn't make the trip

3:43

that's you know what Kitty Hawk Heights

3:45

is we're we're sort of a destination

3:47

shop uh when you're in a coastal

3:50

environment like the Outer Banks or like

3:52

Long Beach Island New Jersey or Virginia

3:53

Beach or the Crystal Coast

3:56

um so uh that's Kitty Hawk kites um the

4:00

surf company Vibe is much more sort of

4:02

surf apparel We Sell Hard Goods Hobie

4:06

Kayaks surfboards stand-up paddle boards

4:08

things like that

4:10

um but then really all the the surf

4:11

apparel brands that you're probably

4:12

familiar with

4:14

um and then life is good is you know the

4:16

optimistic apparel and accessories that

4:18

they sell so we've we've got a number of

4:20

those shops so that sort of makes up our

4:22

brick and mortar retail footprint

4:24

um but yes we have a recreational

4:26

business as well so uh we actually

4:29

started as a hang gliding school back in

4:32

1974. okay so our president and founder

4:36

that I mentioned his name is John Harris

4:37

he saw a picture of somebody flying a

4:40

hang glider in the Winston-Salem Journal

4:43

back in 1973 it was just you know a

4:45

photo of someone flying and he was

4:48

taken by that image blown away he was

4:51

blown away from it completely blown away

4:53

and he uh he found where he could buy a

4:56

hang hang glider you know mail order had

4:58

a chip to himself assembled it on

5:01

jockey's Ridge and with some friends

5:02

just started to learn how to fly it

5:05

and you know when he had a great flight

5:07

he thought to himself there's no way

5:09

everybody in the world wouldn't also

5:11

want to do this yeah so he started a

5:13

hang gliding School operating out of a

5:15

small garage space right across the

5:17

street from what's now jockey's Ridge

5:19

State Park starting it from the ground

5:21

up he fully ended invested it's such a

5:23

great story that he was able to take it

5:24

from that and then expand it to having

5:26

now three different divisions of the

5:27

stores plus this Recreation that's

5:29

amazing oh yeah I mean so we're actually

5:32

about to celebrate our 50th Anniversary

5:33

next year congratulations thank you so

5:37

yeah we're we're planning on some really

5:39

big celebrations for that but

5:41

um yeah I mean it was a hang gliding

5:43

school you know it was selling hang

5:44

gliders repairing hang gliders and

5:46

started selling T-shirts and that grew

5:49

to more products and then he had enough

5:51

money to build a store and in that store

5:53

we sort of grew into you know a large

5:57

we're the largest you know kite retailer

5:59

uh brick and mortar

6:01

um so it's it's just a fun business and

6:04

you know it's really a great time to be

6:06

able to connect with our customers when

6:08

they're on vacation they're just looking

6:09

to have some fun they're in great moods

6:12

which definitely helps and it's the

6:14

Testament of time for you guys to be 50

6:17

years is huge and that means you've seen

6:19

the highs the lows what do you think has

6:22

kind of helped you stay current and in

6:25

business for so long when it comes to

6:27

sort of Trends um you know we have a

6:29

robust buying Department that attends

6:31

shows like ASD and a whole bunch of

6:33

others oh you guys have been to IGS we

6:36

love you here at Emerald you guys are

6:38

great supporters we love it yeah so

6:41

definitely you know trying to identify

6:43

what are gonna be the Hot Products

6:44

because that's you know what keeps you

6:46

relevant

6:47

um but you know our mission is to Teach

6:50

the World to fly and that you know it

6:53

starts with flying kites or it starts

6:55

with your first hand gliding lesson but

6:57

it really leads to just this overall

7:00

um you know sort of vibe we have as an

7:02

organization

7:03

um to try to lift people's spirits to

7:04

create excellent customer service

7:07

um experiences for them and um I don't

7:10

know it just sort of translates to

7:12

everything we do we're we're very

7:13

optimistic organization

7:16

um and you know we're just we're here to

7:17

have a good time and to spread those

7:20

Good Vibes with our customers and those

7:21

memories I mean vacation is everything I

7:24

remember every single vacation my family

7:26

took because it was unique we couldn't

7:28

really afford a lot so when we did go

7:30

out it was amazing so in terms of these

7:32

memories and everything do you do you

7:35

use social platforms a lot or how do you

7:38

capture some of those moments we do

7:40

um okay certainly uh you know social

7:42

media is a really powerful tool to be

7:44

able to communicate with your customers

7:45

not in just a one-way Direction but yeah

7:48

sort of a two-way street which is uh you

7:50

know really important to us

7:52

um we are always asking for our

7:54

customers to share their stories with us

7:56

one thing we're going to be launching as

7:57

we lead into our 50th anniversary

8:00

celebration is a portal on our website

8:03

in order to collect those stories

8:05

because we always hear

8:08

um you know oh we've been coming here

8:09

for the past 30 years you know our dad

8:12

brought us here and now we're bringing

8:13

our kids here and we've always picked up

8:15

a kite at Kitty Hawk Heights but we

8:17

we're talking to customers like that all

8:18

the time

8:20

um because it really is I mean

8:22

it's so impactful you know that memory

8:25

when you and you're gonna feel it for

8:27

yourself when you finally get out there

8:28

and fly a kite but there's nothing quite

8:30

like when setting it into the wind it

8:32

just it brings a smile to your face

8:33

immediately so there's no way around

8:35

that

8:36

um and people remember that experience

8:38

and then they they um the Outer Banks

8:40

were very lucky it's a drive to

8:42

destination

8:44

um so people are coming from all across

8:46

the East Coast you know a lot of people

8:47

from Virginia and Pennsylvania and Ohio

8:50

and Michigan

8:52

um and they drive to the Outer Banks and

8:53

that's their yearly vacation and they do

8:55

it year after year sometimes they stay

8:57

in the same rental home year after year

9:01

um so it really becomes a tradition

9:02

we're just you know happy to be able to

9:04

be a part of that tradition for them I

9:07

love that you're doing that because you

9:08

so you're basically you're creating this

9:11

community and it's a repeat business

9:13

model right and because they have such

9:15

good feelings about it they want to come

9:17

back and then the next generation wants

9:19

to come back so I want you to keep us

9:21

posted on how the website launch goes

9:23

because that's going to be amazing what

9:25

a great way to funnel in those

9:27

experiences and those stories and

9:28

they're going to be authentic stories

9:29

which is great yeah it's going to be a

9:32

way for us to tell our story in an

9:34

interactive way

9:36

um so it'll be at kittyhawk.com which

9:38

has been our website for for as long as

9:40

we've had a website

9:41

um so yeah we're going to be able to use

9:43

it as a tool to tell that story more

9:45

effectively because a lot of really

9:47

interesting and sometimes crazy things

9:49

have happened over those 50 years

9:52

um and yeah it's a way to sort of have

9:54

an inbound communication with our

9:55

customers and you know I remember this

9:57

time we were there and you know the

9:59

hurricane was coming through so there's

10:03

um always always fun windy stories here

10:14

we got to go on the Tesla Loop which if

10:16

you haven't been on it it is so fun it

10:18

was my first time but him he got stuck

10:20

in a car with me poor guy and we were

10:23

talking about your brand and he was like

10:25

you know we're

10:26

we're trying to recruit and get people

10:28

to come

10:29

um work for us and he goes and we're

10:31

trying to get

10:32

we're getting Savvy with what people

10:34

want to go and work for you right

10:36

because recruiting right now if anyone

10:38

went to the NRF uh recently that's been

10:41

a big topic amongst all companies small

10:43

large it's not only recruiting talent

10:46

but we're training them and um making

10:48

them long time you know partners of the

10:51

company so what's going on in that world

10:53

for you

10:55

in recruiting

10:56

um it's it's you know uh we are doing

10:59

everything we can to find the right

11:01

people

11:02

um so you know as a retail and

11:04

Recreation business model

11:07

um we've got uh you know positions

11:09

throughout the organization we've got

11:11

um certainly you know store manager uh

11:13

or assistant manager key holder type

11:15

positions in in our retail environments

11:17

which is you know this front line

11:18

opportunity to actually directly connect

11:20

with those customers which as I said you

11:22

know our customers are really a lot of

11:24

fun

11:25

um but then we've got positions we're

11:28

looking for hang gliding instructors I

11:29

mean if you want to come out here and

11:30

teach people to hang glide we'd love to

11:32

have you

11:33

um we've got positions in Recreation as

11:35

well and then reservations

11:37

um we've got e-commerce positions

11:39

available which I didn't even you know

11:41

talk about we've got four e-commerce

11:43

platforms oh wow in addition to the 28

11:45

brick and mortar Stores

11:48

um and you know corporate positions you

11:50

know we're hiring throughout our

11:53

organization we're really diagnosed

11:54

Dynamic type organization I like to

11:56

think of this as the sort of Flat Line

11:58

because yeah the opportunities here are

12:01

in very it's we're not this like very

12:05

steep vertical type organization uh

12:08

we're very collaborative you know I've

12:10

seen people move from brick and mortar

12:12

into the e-commerce Department into

12:14

something you know they were really good

12:16

at organizing the warehouse and you know

12:18

maybe they're running our warehouse now

12:20

um and you know that sort of thing

12:22

happens all the time here um so you know

12:25

the dynamicism of our organization I

12:27

think is one of our strengths

12:30

um and certainly our beautiful

12:31

environment

12:33

um it really goes along that would be

12:34

very appealing yeah thing pictures

12:36

that's definitely a perk of of the trade

12:38

and I think Kevin would mentioned that I

12:41

don't know if it was part of the

12:42

internship or you're doing some kind of

12:44

program where housing is available too

12:46

right we do

12:48

um we have housing available

12:50

um so yeah we have internships uh we

12:53

have full-time positions

12:55

um one of the uh efforts that the our

12:58

president and CEO has made over the past

13:00

few years um because you know

13:02

unfortunately on a Barrier Island land

13:04

is finite right

13:05

um so you know there's

13:08

um trying to acquire as much housing as

13:11

possible so that we can house the

13:13

seasonal workers um but in addition you

13:15

know we do have some longer term housing

13:18

options available so

13:20

um you know if you bring in a manager

13:22

who'd be a perfect fit for your surf

13:24

store but they're in Kansas City

13:26

um trying to be able to react to that as

13:29

much as possible to get the right people

13:31

on our team

13:32

um so yeah that's that's definitely an

13:35

option we have here so smart when my

13:38

kids are older I will send them your way

13:39

because I'll know that they'll get to be

13:41

in the

13:44

to get some housing so it sounds

13:45

beautiful yeah all right

13:48

so just to kind of wrap everything up

13:51

one of the things that we're trying to

13:53

do with this podcast is kind of give

13:55

insight to

13:57

the value of going to trade shows like

13:59

an ASD Market week so um I don't know if

14:02

you have gone personally but like I said

14:04

we always get to see your buying team

14:06

what does it mean to go to trade shows

14:09

currently and finding that right product

14:11

and making that money like what what are

14:14

your thoughts on that from the marketing

14:15

side well if the buyers find the right

14:18

products it makes my job a lot easier

14:20

right yeah and and going to to shows and

14:24

and you know connecting with new vendors

14:26

finding new Hot Products I mean that

14:28

really goes a long way

14:30

um you know Trends are really

14:32

um you know important I mean when when

14:33

Shoppers are in your Stores

14:36

um you know having the stuff that they

14:38

want

14:39

um not just the stuff that you want to

14:40

sell is is so important

14:43

um so I I know that you know in speaking

14:46

with Kevin who by the way doesn't feel

14:48

in any way like he was trapped on that

14:51

vehicle with you uh he had a blast and I

14:54

led to this conversation right here

14:55

right it connected eyes

15:00

um but yeah I mean he's he's brought

15:02

back

15:03

um several brands that have performed

15:04

really well in our Stores

15:06

um because that was the type of product

15:08

that our customers connected with so

15:10

um you know these types of buying shows

15:13

are absolutely critical to our

15:14

operations

15:15

I love it and then just as a marketing

15:17

person what's something that you can

15:20

recommend that you're having success

15:22

with right now or something that you're

15:24

kind of having complications that you're

15:26

trying to work on improve like from that

15:28

world what what's going on in the

15:29

marketing Insight world

15:32

well sure I mean um you know economic

15:34

conditions are this constant bobbing and

15:37

weaving um and you know we are uh we're

15:40

a tourist destination uh but we're also

15:42

dealing with uh economic impacts where

15:45

people in in our feeder markets may be

15:48

experiencing different economic

15:50

conditions maybe

15:52

um accelerated economic conditions that

15:54

we're seeing so you know when they are

15:55

here in the Outer Banks we're competing

15:58

for their dollars and they can be

16:00

spending that in the restaurants uh or

16:03

they could be cooking at their vacation

16:05

home they could be hanging out on the

16:06

beach or they could be hang gliding with

16:08

us so um it's a matter of making sure

16:11

that we are presenting what we offer in

16:14

the best possible light

16:16

um explaining how it's different

16:18

explaining how it's going to really

16:21

in in the cases of hang gliding or

16:23

kiteboarding or a parasailing or a

16:25

dolphin tour

16:27

um how it can be a life-changing

16:28

experience you know in a lot of ways and

16:30

telling those good stories about people

16:32

who have you know had their lives

16:34

changed by learning how to hang glide I

16:36

mean they're um you know just to take a

16:39

moment there was

16:41

um a veteran who who learned you know it

16:43

had become a life's goal for him to

16:45

learn to hang glide

16:47

um in experiencing some challenges

16:50

um after his deployments

16:52

um and he came and he took a few lessons

16:55

with us and he got into a tandem hand

16:58

gliding lesson out at the cotton gin

17:00

which is the one where they tow you up

17:01

and then the hang glider is released and

17:03

you store down

17:05

um and you know through that process

17:07

through you know several of the you know

17:09

trips to the Outer Banks he he connected

17:11

with a new community and it really

17:13

opened up his world and it's just such a
