Coating Buffing Wheels for Polishing - Turnbull Custom Guns
FULL TRANSCRIPT
[Music]
uh welcome back to turble Custom Guns I
had somebody ask in the comments what I
use for my buffing
wheels and um I told them polish aray
which was wrong I forgot I had changed
somewhere back in covid times Brown stop
carrying polish array and uh I started
using the satin
glow um it seems to work about the same
but the reason why they asked was
because they said that my polishing
compounds seem to hold up a little
better than theirs on the
wheels um one of the reasons why is I
think the way I apply the compound so I
figured I'd do a quick video going over
that um I use hot water
and uh this is probably I don't know 130
degrees and uh I use that to soften up
the compound instead of applying it
direct to the wheel which tends to throw
it like this which sometimes if I need
to freshen it up I'll use that method
but generally I like to at least coat
them once like this every couple
days and as that starts to melt you can
see it kind of melts
off onto the
wheel and I make sure I get the
edges cuz they do a lot of
cutting but I just rub that right into
the I use um these are loose muslin
Wheels um I make sure I rub that right
in there
and then uh as the top
layer wears off I just it kind of
dissolves the glue a little bit and
helps you get more
compound into the wheels
usually the 150 grit which is this one
sometimes it's 120 this is usually the
hardest one to do as the Grits get finer
they seem to melt a little
easier but you see I'm kind of twisting
it into the
fibers now uh
I use loose muslin
Wheels why I guess cuz that's what I
used when I was in Gunsmithing school I
also have a lot of felt
wheels and uh I haven't got the courage
to try them because I'm so used to you
know using the process that I've used
for so
long um sometimes people also use
they'll have a grinder with one 50
stitched wheel on one side and a 150
loose wheel on the other cuz the
stitched wheels will cut
quicker
um they probably would do a little
better for getting rid of
pits so I tend to use a file to get out
my pits and then just leave the loose
muslin
wheels on my buffers
the best thing to do it if you do it
this way is to coat them at night and
then let them dry overnight and you can
use them the next day but it probably
takes I don't know 30 minutes to an hour
for this to dry
properly if you need to speed it up you
can run your buffers and that kind of
air drives them as
well but we'll go ahead and that's that
one done we'll go ahead and cook the
rest
[Music]
there this one's all they're all
coated and it makes a pretty hard film
when I first start to use them I'll use
a
bar similar to that just to break the
coating a little bit
and that's how I coat my wheels hope
that's helpful to you and uh we'll see
you next time
