Joshua Redman: Still Dreaming | JAZZ NIGHT IN AMERICA
FULL TRANSCRIPT
You know I've never wanted to
really be part of a tribute band.
So you know, it wasn't lightly
that I took on a project like this.
I envisioned this band with —
I think each of us has a kind of special relationship
to the corresponding instrumentalist in Old and New Dreams.
For myself, it's pretty obvious.
My father, Dewey Redman,
was the saxophonist in Old and New Dreams.
You know, I didn't grow up with my dad.
But I got to know him much better
after I moved to New York.
And in fact,
I got a chance to start playing music with him.
So it was an amazing opportunity
to learn from a master and also to get to know my dad.
I've always felt that part of me sounded like my dad.
And the funny thing is when one of my first albums —
when Wish came out and my dad actually listened to it,
I couldn't believe he did.
And he called me up and he was like,
"Yeah, you sound good.
You sound like me."
And now, playing this music with Still Dreaming,
maybe I've gotten to a place where I can
engage with my father's music
and still feel like I can be myself within it.
