lake champlain is home to one of north

0:03

america's greatest mysteries join

0:06

small-town monsters as we explore

0:08

america's loch ness following

0:10

researchers listening to eyewitnesses

0:12

and examining the evidence this is on

0:15

the trail of champ

0:21

[Music]

0:40

nestled between the u.s states of new

0:42

york and vermont as well as the canadian

0:44

province of quebec lies a massive body

0:47

of water

0:48

but this is no ordinary lake

0:52

this is lake champlain

0:56

a place of endearing beauty and natural

0:59

wonder

1:00

a place filled with rich history

1:03

but also a place riddled with mystery

1:05

and intrigue

1:07

[Music]

1:08

for centuries people inhabiting this

1:10

area have reported the presence of

1:12

something unknown in the lake

1:15

an unidentified creature rumored to be

1:17

much larger than any known species in

1:19

the lake

1:21

the lake champlain monster is

1:23

affectionately known as champ or champi

1:25

by the locals

1:27

has been seen hundreds of times over the

1:29

centuries

1:30

typically described as being anywhere

1:32

from 10 to 30 feet in length with a dark

1:35

brown green or black scaly color the

1:38

creature is purported to closely

1:39

resemble some sort of long-necked

1:41

aquatic reptile from the time of the

1:44

dinosaurs

1:44

[Music]

1:52

one of only a few lakes that flows

1:54

northbound modern-day lake champlain is

1:57

120 miles long

1:59

12.2 miles wide at its widest with a

2:02

maximum depth of 427 feet

2:05

this makes lake champlain one of the

2:07

largest freshwater lakes in the entire

2:09

united states

2:10

[Music]

2:12

lake champlain was first discovered by

2:14

europeans in 1609 as french explorer

2:17

samuel de champlain made his way through

2:20

the area

2:22

the lake was thus named after him but

2:23

the history of the lake itself reaches

2:25

much further back in time

2:30

modern-day lake champlain traces its

2:32

origins to a time when it was actually

2:34

part of a much larger body of water

2:37

known as the champlain sea

2:39

which was an arm of the atlantic ocean

2:43

lake champlain was but a fjord in this

2:45

sea which covered much of the canadian

2:47

provinces of quebec and ontario as well

2:50

as parts of new york state and vermont

2:52

[Music]

2:57

the sea was present due to water from

2:59

massive glaciers that engulfed much of

3:01

canada

3:03

[Music]

3:07

the champlain sea was host to a variety

3:09

of marine life including mammals like

3:11

whales and seals

3:14

so the charlotte whale was found in 1850

3:17

by some railroad workers and that is a

3:20

marine mammal a whale

3:22

so the time the champlain sea thirteen

3:24

thousand years ago which was about the

3:26

time of our end of the last ice age

3:29

is actually a really short amount of

3:30

time in the history of life here on

3:33

earth and it's believed that those

3:35

saltwater animals are what brought

3:37

people to this area for the first time

3:39

because they were hunting those animals

3:41

and those animals got pushed back out as

3:44

the fresh water started to replace the

3:45

salt water

3:48

today there are 90 species of fish in

3:50

modern lake champlain making it one of

3:52

the most biodiverse lakes in north

3:54

america

3:56

[Music]

4:01

my name is scott martis i've been an

4:03

investigator

4:04

of the lake champlain monster for the

4:06

last 25 years i used to live here in

4:09

vermont

4:10

for 18 years

4:12

my initial visit to lake champlain to

4:15

begin investigating was november

4:18

of 1992.

4:20

i moved here in april 1994 and lived

4:23

here until december of 2011.

4:26

i moved to florida because i met my wife

4:29

but i've still come back every summer

4:31

to investigate i've been here

4:34

every summer since 2013. so i've been at

4:37

this a long time

4:39

my speculative hypothesis regarding

4:43

the simplest answer to what may be going

4:45

on here

4:46

and that's assuming and this is a big

4:48

assumption

4:50

that what people are describing in their

4:52

eyewitness reports and i include myself

4:54

in that because i had a sighting in 1994

4:58

of something that i believe was one of

4:59

these animals

5:01

and if

5:02

the best video and photographic evidence

5:04

is correct

5:06

my speculative hypothesis that somehow

5:09

some sort of moderately long-necked

5:11

plesiosaur managed to survive beyond

5:14

their presumed extinctions

5:16

in the oceans

5:17

for millions of years

5:20

then

5:21

a small colony or group of these

5:23

plesiosaurs came into

5:26

the champlain sea

5:28

and were subsequently trapped when the

5:31

land rose and cut off the marine

5:32

influence

5:34

gradually became fresh water and became

5:36

modern day lake champlain

5:38

and there's been a small colony of them

5:40

living and dying in the lake ever since

5:43

now that's a speculative hypothesis

5:48

[Music]

5:51

the idea of some kind of

5:54

plesiosaur or prehistoric quail

5:57

existing here is not that far-fetched

5:59

because some of the fishes

6:01

that the prehistoric mesozoic marine

6:03

reptiles

6:05

and the early quails eight

6:07

are thriving in this lake

6:09

like guards and both ends

6:12

sturgeons these are all contemporaries

6:15

of the dinosaurs

6:19

so

6:20

you know it's not that far-fetched to

6:22

imagine something like that but

6:23

imagining it and making it real are two

6:26

different things

6:31

[Music]

6:38

while it is disputed when exactly the

6:40

first recorded sighting of the champ

6:41

creature occurred native american tribes

6:44

on both sides of the lake had their fair

6:46

share of folklore surrounding a

6:47

mysterious serpent in the water

6:50

for the mohawk it was called onyarakoa

6:54

or great snake

6:56

for the western abunaki it was pittascog

6:59

or tataskok an underwater horned serpent

7:03

[Music]

7:05

several interesting petroglyphs have

7:07

been pointed to as possible evidence of

7:10

native american depictions of champ or

7:12

similar creatures

7:14

one such petroglyph was discovered in

7:16

1995

7:17

not far from the shores of the canadian

7:19

section of lake champlain

7:22

[Music]

7:25

in 1794 western abunaki's petroglyphs

7:28

were discovered on the west river just

7:30

about 80 miles southeast of lake

7:32

champlain's southernmost point the

7:34

petroglyphs purport to show strange

7:36

serpent-like creatures including one

7:38

with a long neck and appendages

7:41

whether these peculiar petroglyphs have

7:43

anything to do with the mystery of lake

7:45

champlain is yet to be determined

7:55

my name is katie elizabeth i am the

7:58

president and founder of champ search

8:01

an organization that's dedicated to

8:03

proving the existence studying and most

8:06

importantly protecting the unique

8:08

animals that inhabit lake champlain

8:10

i started getting into this phenomenon

8:12

when i was around seven years old um i

8:15

was watching an episode of unsolved

8:17

mysteries

8:18

and i saw the famous sandra mansi photo

8:21

that was taken in 1977

8:24

and i said to my mom oh my gosh there's

8:26

a dinosaur in vermont i want to go see

8:28

it

8:29

and then later on um in my life i was 21

8:32

it was 2012. um i ended up coming up to

8:35

the lake

8:37

well i believe that these animals are

8:40

a reptile and also have amphibious

8:43

traits

8:44

the main reason for that is the many

8:47

eyewitness accounts that i've gathered

8:48

gathered over the years of my research

8:52

i've heard of people seeing them

8:54

sunbathing on the beach which is a thing

8:57

that reptiles do

8:59

basically they do this to sustain

9:01

vitamin d

9:03

also there's been reports of eye shine

9:05

in the marsh and out on the lake when

9:08

a light is shown upon them

9:10

that's also indicative of a nocturnal

9:13

animal

9:14

american alligators crocodiles

9:17

things like that they give off this eye

9:20

shine and that's just

9:22

it's just amazing to see the same

9:24

similarities between

9:25

you know a known reptile that has

9:27

survived millions of years that is still

9:30

here compared to

9:32

the traits that these animals have as

9:34

well you know you don't see these

9:36

animals coming up for air all the time

9:38

so it's possible that these animals

9:40

breathe through their skin they have

9:42

like slimy skin on some of their body

9:44

and then they also have these knobs

9:46

on their back and on their neck

9:48

and that is the other part of the you

9:51

know the reptilian traits that this

9:52

animal has

9:56

[Music]

10:05

the revolutionary war brought more

10:07

people to the lake champlain area in

10:10

fact lake champlain played a crucial

10:12

role during the war

10:13

various naval battles were fought

10:15

between the rebelling americans and

10:17

british forces on the lake

10:20

the lake was a key strategic area that

10:22

both sides wished to control

10:24

the british retained control of most of

10:26

the lake following the war but stayed

10:28

posted mostly in the northern sections

10:31

of the lake

10:32

while there were reports of strange

10:34

serpent-like sightings during the

10:35

colonial and revolutionary period around

10:38

lake champlain it wasn't until local

10:40

newspapers began reporting on such

10:42

phenomenon that sightings were being

10:44

recorded

10:47

the first such published report of a

10:49

monster on lake champlain came from a

10:51

new york publication known as the public

10:54

advertiser which in 1809 wrote

10:58

lake champlain a monster has lately made

11:01

its appearance on the waters of the lake

11:04

the next reported account of a monster

11:06

on the lake came in 1819

11:09

it was reported in the plattsburgh

11:10

republican publication that a massive

11:13

creature had been spotted by residents

11:15

near bulwaga bay in port henry new york

11:19

um and what's really interesting is if

11:20

you read that story um it reads as kind

11:24

of satirical

11:26

and so at that time people had satire

11:28

too and so there were people who

11:29

believed in champ and there are some

11:31

people who maybe were making light of

11:32

people believing in champ and so i think

11:34

it's important to

11:36

really look at the evidence and

11:37

distinguish between people who really

11:39

saw something and believe that they saw

11:41

something and maybe people who were

11:43

having a little fun

11:45

at the time um and we see a similar

11:47

thing with samuel d champlain a lot of

11:49

people quote these records of daniel d

11:52

champlain seeing a monster in lake

11:55

champlain

11:56

and that's often misquoted he saw

11:58

something that was five foot long that

12:00

was probably definitely a long nose gar

12:06

[Music]

12:12

uh my name is william dranginis i've

12:14

been interested in cryptozoology the

12:16

study of unknown animals since 1995 when

12:19

i had a bigfoot sighting in virginia

12:21

we were 100 feet away 75 feet away

12:24

actually and i saw the creature

12:26

uh clearly

12:27

that really sparked my interest knowing

12:29

that these are flesh and blood animals

12:31

creatures so

12:33

it was about almost 10 years later 12

12:35

years later i got interested in the

12:37

champ creature at lake champlain

12:40

i found it interesting because i

12:42

contacted some eyewitnesses

12:44

worked with scott mardis up here at the

12:46

lake

12:48

and actually talking to the witnesses is

12:50

a really great thing they had they have

12:52

the same energy that i have after i had

12:54

my bigfoot cited

12:56

um that in itself is key um because

12:59

there are people that hoax sightings

13:01

things like that but when you

13:03

meet someone that had that same energy

13:05

that you had and it doesn't matter if

13:07

it's bigfoot or loch ness or

13:09

champ here

13:11

it's an energy everyone has and you

13:12

could sense that energy so

13:14

by interviewing some of the people

13:16

around the lake here

13:17

it really got me into it that there

13:19

there could possibly be a creature here

13:22

together with scott mardis they make up

13:24

the mardis stranginess lake champlain

13:26

research team

13:27

[Music]

13:31

it was the 1870s that would bring the

13:34

monster of lake champlain into the

13:35

mainstream lexicon

13:37

back then it was referred to as the

13:39

champlain sea serpent

13:42

white hall new york sits at the southern

13:44

end of the lake

13:46

it was in the small hamlet of dresden

13:47

new york bordering the lake that in july

13:50

of 1873 a group of railroad workers

13:53

reported seeing a 20-foot long serpent

13:55

with large teeth swimming for about a

13:58

quarter of a mile the white hall times

14:00

wrote an article about the encounters

14:02

and panic began to spread

14:04

later that month a steamboat reportedly

14:07

hit the serpent and nearly capsized near

14:09

fort ticonderoga

14:11

[Music]

14:13

the reports soon were printed nationwide

14:15

and they even attracted the attention of

14:17

noted showman pt barnum

14:19

who issued a dispatch stating i hereby

14:22

offer fifty thousand dollars for the

14:24

hide of the great champlain sea serpent

14:27

to add to my mammoth's world fair show

14:31

as a result armed hunting parties began

14:33

scouring the lake in search of the

14:35

creature's remains but none were found

14:38

and barnum's reward was never handed out

14:42

[Music]

14:45

the the general consistent opinion

14:48

among mainstream zoologists is that

14:50

there is no strange animal in each damn

14:52

plane

14:54

you know whatever it is is extremely

14:56

elusive

14:58

there are a whole host

15:01

of known prehistoric survivors in the

15:03

lake

15:04

i believe have a place

15:07

in the more explaining the more marginal

15:09

champ sightings

15:11

the ones where people

15:13

are giving a a a detailed description of

15:15

something with a long neck and a

15:16

humpback that's very large in excess of

15:20

six feet you know that obviously will

15:22

not do

15:23

but the only thing that's ever gonna

15:25

make a difference with mainstream

15:27

science and put this animal

15:29

in

15:30

the zoology books if it exists

15:34

is a biological specimen of solar type

15:37

sometimes you have to break through that

15:39

wall to make it legitimate i believe

15:42

they're here but i can't prove it

15:44

you know

15:46

eyewitness testimony

15:49

you know no matter how persuasive it is

15:51

and no matter how consistent it is

15:53

is not acceptable evidence

15:56

in the science of zoology for evidence

15:58

of a new animal species you've got to

16:01

have

16:02

a biological specimen

16:06

in 1889 the plattsburgh sentinel offered

16:09

a thousand dollars for the capture dead

16:11

or alive

16:12

of the champlain sea serpent after

16:14

renewed sightings

16:17

the monster reappeared in 1915 in a new

16:20

york times report about multiple

16:22

witnesses seeing a 40-foot long creature

16:24

trapped in the shallows of bulwaga bay

16:27

[Music]

16:31

accounts of sightings were published

16:32

sporadically in 1929 1939 1943 and 1961.

16:41

[Music]

16:43

in 1971 joseph zarzinski formed the lake

16:47

champlain phenomena investigation

16:49

cataloging many of the reports in the

16:51

modern era

16:54

well i've been studying the animals for

16:57

god over 30 years but actually champ

16:59

quest has been in existence since 1992.

17:02

the late 70s early 80s there was a bunch

17:04

of sightings and then

17:06

it slowed down

17:08

towards the mid 80s late 80s but then in

17:11

the from 1992 to

17:14

1996 there was a bunch of sightings

17:17

they were just uh one summer we had 35

17:20

and there was more yet that we had heard

17:22

of but just hadn't been able to track

17:24

down

17:26

we have a quick sighting report for him

17:31

this goes back about over 20 years ago

17:34

even before they named this creature

17:36

champ

17:37

i was fishing up there in the late fall

17:40

and uh as i was sitting there i heard a

17:43

splash

17:45

and then i saw

17:47

the creature it was no more than 20 some

17:50

feet

17:51

approximately from the boat

17:55

what i saw from it was approximately

17:58

the size of a telephone pole

18:00

the coloring onto it was very similar to

18:03

that of a bullhead or the kneel

18:05

and then it went to more or less a

18:07

whitish underneath it

18:09

i saw the way this creature swam

18:13

it did not

18:14

swim in a serpentine

18:16

type of motion with a snail going from

18:19

side to side

18:20

it went in a motion

18:23

of a coil type where it propelled itself

18:26

downward at a very fast rate of speed

18:32

[Music]

18:36

champ sightings have been going on at a

18:38

fairly regular pace since then with

18:40

sightings reported nearly each year

18:43

however the question remains if champ

18:46

exists

18:47

what could it be

18:54

[Music]

19:02

[Music]

19:34
