So today we're looking at War and Peace

0:04

firstly you can make an alliance with

0:06

someone a sovereign state could make an

0:09

alliance with another sovereign state

0:12

and this simply means that they become

0:14

um allies which is another word for it

0:17

which is obviously from Alliance and

0:20

your allies are the people who are on

0:22

your side it's a treaty it's a type of

0:25

treaty a type of contract where two

0:27

Nations agree to be on the same side and

0:30

the same for make aact with a pact a

0:34

type of treaty because a treaty really

0:35

means an international contract between

0:38

sovereign states a pact is an agreement

0:41

it's normally non-aggression towards

0:43

each other and it's perhaps also the

0:45

agreement to um to act together if

0:49

you're if there's any kind of attack on

0:51

one of the states the states have to act

0:53

together and um this is again a type of

0:56

treaty which is perhaps why NATO is the

0:59

North Atlantic Treaty Organization so

1:01

they also have the word treaty in NATO

1:04

now you can also make a truce the a

1:07

truce is a type of ceasefire really a

1:09

truce is an agreement to stop fighting

1:12

the same for an Armistice it's an

1:14

agreement to lay down your weapons and

1:17

stop fighting so a truce might last

1:20

three days it might last a week but then

1:22

it it may the ceasefire may not be

1:24

maintained and the um hostilities or

1:27

violence could break out once again um

1:31

so yeah um an Armistice a ceasefire and

1:34

a truce or very similar a peace treaty

1:37

perhaps it should be up here really

1:38

because this is a type of contract and

1:40

obviously it's a contract aimed at peace

1:43

in some kind of way um okay um if

1:47

violence erupts it breaks out very

1:49

quickly really erupt is very similar to

1:52

break out and remember that other bad

1:55

things can erupt like hostilities War um

2:00

uh all of these collocate with these two

2:03

uh nouns collocate with all of these

2:05

verbs so please remember those are

2:07

useful

2:08

collocations um to go on the offensive

2:10

simply means that a a um one of the two

2:13

armies who are fighting um that if they

2:16

go on the offensive they stop defending

2:18

and they start attacking um okay so

2:21

perhaps you could also say they launch a

2:23

counter attack perhaps the enemy is um

2:26

attacking and then you launch a

2:27

Counterattack it means you fight back

2:29

back in some kind of way you go on the

2:32

offensive suddenly you can also launch

2:35

surgical strikes which usually means air

2:39

strikes and I better put that here air

2:41

strikes um and the word surgical is used

2:45

to it's kind of a euphemism I suppose um

2:50

I don't know if you remember this word

2:52

it was in my vocabulary lesson on books

2:54

and literature um so euphemism what I

2:58

mean is uh there's nothing there's no

3:01

surgery involved in air strikes they're

3:03

very destructive processes obviously a

3:05

lot of there are a lot of casualties in

3:07

an air strike but the word surgical is

3:09

to try and show how precise the air

3:12

strikes are it's supposed to give the

3:15

impression perhaps that there are there

3:17

is very little collateral damage what I

3:20

mean here is that there are very uh

3:22

there are very few casualties as well

3:24

very few

3:26

casualties um because if something is

3:29

surgical it's only getting the enemy

3:31

soldiers it's not hitting civilians in

3:34

any kind of way and so this is a

3:36

euphemism really I think most air

3:38

strikes are not as surgical as perhaps

3:40

this word might make you believe and

3:43

perhaps very often there's collateral

3:45

damage which just means slaughtered

3:47

civilians um you can also launch a

3:50

preemptive strike a preemptive anything

3:54

means something you do in anticipation

3:57

of another action so it's something you

4:00

do to prevent another action so when you

4:03

launch a preemptive strike you're

4:06

hitting the opponent before he hits you

4:08

that's the whole point you you're you're

4:11

attacking them because you're absolutely

4:13

certain that they're going to attack you

4:16

and so you launch a preemptive strike to

4:18

make sure that uh they don't attack you

4:21

in the first place again it's a kind of

4:23

euphemism because this is or it's a way

4:26

of justifying aggression because this is

4:28

a way of justifying in attacking your

4:30

opponent first you're not attacking him

4:33

first actually you're attacking him

4:35

because he was going to attack you so

4:38

preemptive Strike It it means um it's an

4:41

attempt to justify making the first

4:44

attack I suppose you're saying that he

4:46

was going to attack anyway okay um two

4:49

more Expressions to be under siege a

4:52

Siege is the type of attack when an army

4:56

surrounds a town or city and and um very

5:00

often they cut off supplies to the city

5:03

so there could be starvation in the city

5:06

because there's no food coming in and

5:09

there could be all sorts of other

5:11

problems like looting and rioting

5:13

looting is when there's no law an order

5:16

and a lot of people are stealing things

5:17

from each other and rioting is similar

5:20

it's usually when they're setting fire

5:22

to shops and stealing things from the

5:24

shops and there's no Law and Order um so

5:27

a city could be under siege for one

5:29

month 6 months 3 years um you can also

5:34

lay Siege to a city which is the

5:36

opposite you can say that uh the Army

5:39

are laying Siege to Madrid and I'm just

5:42

giving that as an example but um I'm I'm

5:45

sure they're not and I'm sure they won't

5:46

be but um to lay Siege to it's always

5:49

plus City so if you read classical uh

5:53

literature and you you perhaps

5:55

interested in history of Greece or Rome

5:57

you'll hear about the Army laying Siege

5:59

to the city the Barbarian City or the um

6:03

whatever okay a military coup is when um

6:07

one particular group of people sees

6:10

power basically um when it's military C

6:13

it sounds like it's somebody connected

6:14

to the military and they use the Army to

6:17

seize power from from the government or

6:21

from whoever's in power at the time and

6:23

so it's a type of Uprising it's a type

6:25

of rebellion and it's when power changes

6:28

in the state it goes from one group to

6:30

another group um and it's involving the

6:33

military obviously so there could be a

6:35

Civil War when there's a military coup

6:37

there could be a war in one state

6:40

between two different powers two

6:42

different sides that's what we call a

6:45

civil war it's not like a an

6:47

international conflict it's a war in one

6:49

particular State um now some army terms

6:54

I suppose or some military terms to

6:56

Ambush it means to wait to set up a trap

7:00

for the enemy um and to wait for them to

7:03

walk into their trap where they will be

7:06

slaughtered and you can also say to be

7:08

caught in an ambush because it's a noun

7:12

and verb okay to shell means to use

7:16

heavy artillery um shells are the he the

7:20

the the bombs basically which are fired

7:23

by Heavy Artillery guns so we're talking

7:26

really big guns not the kind of guns you

7:28

carry but the kind of guns which are

7:30

very very big and you wheel to different

7:32

places and you could shell Frontline

7:34

positions you could shell their

7:36

headquarters it's another

7:39

word um but yeah you shell the enemy you

7:43

it means you fire heavy artillery at the

7:46

enemy so collateral damage we've done

7:48

it's a kind of euphemism for slaughtered

7:51

civilians it's it's people who are

7:53

killed um accidentally by the military

7:57

when they perhaps launch an air strike

7:59

or or when they fire heavy artillery it

8:02

would still be collateral damage to be

8:04

caught in a crossfire it's like it

8:06

sounds it's when there is uh there's um

8:10

fire coming from the left and Fire

8:12

coming from the right there's lots of

8:13

bullets flying from the left and right

8:16

and so you are caught in the

8:18

crossfire a position nobody wants to be

8:20

in I'm sure so loot is when people steal

8:24

from uh private property and from shops

8:27

rioting tends to be in the middle of the

8:29

city and so it tends to be less private

8:31

property it seems to me and more shops

8:34

when when there was the uh hurricane

8:37

when there was natural disasters very

8:38

often there's looting afterwards because

8:40

there's no Law and Order and it means

8:41

people are stealing from houses but

8:44

riots normally some kind of political

8:46

demonstration usually or something like

8:48

that and then um violence erupts in the

8:51

middle of the city and shops are smashed

8:54

and that kind of thing plunder and

8:56

pillage are a little bit different

8:57

because they're usually used for for

8:59

soldiers and when soldiers plunder or

9:02

pillage somewhere it means that they um

9:05

have taken over a new um area or

9:09

territory and they are stealing things

9:11

from the area they're pillaging things

9:13

they're they're stealing all sorts of

9:15

possessions from any of the from the

9:18

private property around them um so we

9:20

use the word declare with war declare

9:22

war seize power or you could even seize

9:26

the city you could even capture a city

9:29

you can say the enemy has captured

9:31

London or whatever it is um you can

9:34

capture enemy troops and remember this

9:36

word for soldiers it's another good word

9:39

you can defeat the rebels which means

9:41

you are victorious the victory is yours

9:44

you beat them you defeat the Rebels

9:47

rebels are obviously a word for the

9:49

people who are rebelling the others the

9:52

other um the people who are resisting

9:55

very often the government but um it it's

9:58

word used as

9:59

very often the enemy really the people

10:01

you're fighting against okay Retreat or

10:05

withdraw they're a little bit different

10:07

actually I've put them together CU

10:08

they're very similar when you Retreat it

10:11

means you pull back you pull out of

10:14

wherever you are it means you as a

10:16

soldier you're going in the other

10:18

direction you're not attacking the enemy

10:20

you're running away You're retreating or

10:22

you're trying to get as much distance as

10:24

possible shouldn't say Run Away really

10:25

but you're you're coming back from your

10:28

position um if you withdraw it's the

10:30

same thing but you can also use this

10:32

word kind of the opposite way and you

10:34

can say the general withdrew his troops

10:39

okay uh you wouldn't say the general

10:40

retreated his troops you would say the

10:42

troops retreated or the G General

10:45

withdrew his

10:46

troops okay troops can surrender which

10:49

means give up means they don't want to

10:51

fight anymore they wave the White

10:53

Flag um that you can also invade a

10:57

foreign power which is when you put your

10:59

army into another Sovereign Nation um

11:04

after the battle has finished you may

11:06

decide to evacuate the wounded you may

11:09

decide to evacuate civilians or you may

11:11

decide to evacuate refugees evacuate

11:14

just means pull people out of an area um

11:17

but this is not like a with treat or

11:19

withdrawal because it's not involving

11:21

troops re really it could involve troops

11:24

cuz they're wounded troops but evacuate

11:27

just means get people out of one area

11:29

and put them in another and so during

11:31

the war a lot of people in London a lot

11:33

of young kids in London and the areas

11:36

around London were evacuated and they

11:39

were civilians they were evacuated they

11:40

were taken away from the city because

11:42

there was a bombing campaign on the city

11:45

um you can Annex a disputed territory

11:48

very similar to invade this word um and

11:52

it it it's slightly different though

11:54

because anex it sounds like it's a part

11:57

of land which is right next to your

11:59

country you can even use this word for

12:02

when you build something on the side of

12:03

your house and so it's got a similar

12:06

meaning to that just take a um a

12:09

disputed territory and claim it as your

12:12

own um to stockpile means stock up if

12:16

you've seen one of my phrasal verb

12:17

videos I mentioned this word stock up

12:20

means um uh keep collecting and building

12:24

building up your supply of something and

12:27

so if you're building up your supply of

12:29

weapons you're stocking up on weapons

12:32

you're building up that supply and of of

12:35

course um if somebody's planning on

12:37

going to war they need to stockpile some

12:39

weapons first now deploy troops or heavy

12:43

artillery or helicopters um it simply

12:46

means put those troops into battle into

12:49

action it's kind of the opposite of

12:52

withdraw withdraw your troops means take

12:54

them away from action and deploy them

12:56

means put them into battle

12:59

you can sustain heavy casualties you can

13:01

suffer from heavy casual sorry suffer

13:04

heavy

13:05

casualties um this means that a lot of

13:08

your men or your troops um are wounded

13:11

in battle they're injured in some kind

13:14

of way you will probably want to disarm

13:17

any soldiers who you've captured as soon

13:19

as possible disarm them take away their

13:22

weapons but maybe there has been a

13:25

ceasefire for a week maybe there's been

13:28

a truce for a week and you have decided

13:30

to rearm because you don't think that

13:32

the truce will hold so you this means

13:35

get get weapons back again um stock up

13:38

on weapons once more um last one I did

13:41

was armored car um armor I just wanted

13:44

to show this was similar to the word arm

13:46

and arm and nuclear arms arms are

13:49

obviously a type of weapon and armor is

13:52

what the knights used to wear in battle

13:55

and we also use it for when you armor

13:57

some kind of modern equipment like an

13:59

armored tank an armored car it just

14:01

means protection around the um piece of

14:05

equipment okay thanks for uh watching

14:08

please ask any questions under the video

14:10

and I'll try and answer them as soon as

14:11

possible um yeah thanks very much and

14:13

I'll see you all soon
