0:00

In today's lesson, you are going to learn seven effective methods that will help

0:05

you study English when you're alone.

0:07

Are you ready?

0:08

Well then let's jump right in.

0:11

Method number one, the five minute daily story.

0:16

Now, this method helps you build your English fluency by speaking about

0:20

your day for five minutes straight.

0:23

Without stopping.

0:25

The focus is your day.

0:27

What happens?

0:28

So here's how you can do this.

0:31

You're going to speak for five minutes about something that

0:33

happened today, but you want to choose simple, everyday topics.

0:38

What did you eat?

0:39

Who did you speak to, maybe about your commute to work?

0:43

The focus is on speaking continuously about that event,

0:47

about that situation, about that activity for five minutes straight.

0:52

Now, let's see an example of how this would actually work.

0:56

For example, a shorter version.

0:58

This morning I woke up later than usual, so I rushed to

1:01

the kitchen to make breakfast.

1:03

While preparing oatmeal, I accidentally spilled some on the counter.

1:07

It annoyed me at first, but then I laughed because it

1:10

reminded me how clumsy I can be.

1:13

Honestly, the whole situation was stressful, but I just went with the

1:17

flow and didn't let it ruin my day.

1:20

Now, this example was not for a full five minutes because I'm just showing

1:25

you a shorter version, but notice.

1:28

We were speaking about eating oatmeal, preparing breakfast in the morning.

1:32

That is the event, the situation, the activity that was chosen

1:37

for today's five minute story.

1:39

So again, you want to choose something that you're doing on a

1:42

regular basis or something simple.

1:45

Now, in this example, you saw that there were two new expressions, new terms.

1:51

So I want to break these terms down for you very quickly.

1:54

The first one was clumsy.

1:56

The.

1:57

Good.

1:58

Again, clumsy.

2:00

Good.

2:00

This just refers to someone who often drops things or has small

2:05

accidents, a clumsy individual.

2:07

The expression we saw was go with the flow.

2:12

Go with the flow.

2:14

Now this expression just refers to relaxing and accepting

2:18

things as they happen.

2:19

Hey, something fell.

2:21

It's okay.

2:21

Go with the flow.

2:22

Don't worry about it.

2:23

So we have clumsy.

2:25

And go with the flow.

2:26

So again, method number one is the five minute daily story.

2:32

This leads us to method number two.

2:34

Method number two is describe what you see.

2:39

Describe what you see.

2:41

This method trains you to observe and describe your surroundings

2:46

in detail, building descriptive vocabulary and fluency.

2:51

It's a very effective way to improve your English fluency, even

2:55

when you're studying by yourself.

2:58

Observe what's around you now.

3:00

How can you do this effectively?

3:02

How can you implement or utilize this method?

3:04

So you're going to pick an object, a room, or an image, describe it using details

3:12

and add your opinions or feelings, right?

3:16

You're seeing the object, you're seeing the room, and you're going to

3:19

describe what you're seeing, but then add your opinion about that thing, add

3:24

your opinion about that object, and then describe your feelings as well.

3:30

All right, I'm looking at my coffee mug.

3:33

It's a small white ceramic mug with a blue rim.

3:37

The design is very minimalistic and I like it because the handle

3:41

fits perfectly in my hand.

3:44

Drinking from it helps me start off on the right foot each morning.

3:49

I described this coffee mug that I was holding, right, but I also spoke about

3:54

the feelings related to what I was doing.

3:57

Now you also saw that there were two new terms, minimalistic and

4:01

start off on the right foot.

4:03

Again, we're speaking about the second method now.

4:07

There were two terms.

4:08

The first term being minimalistic, which just means simple style with few elements.

4:14

I like a minimalistic approach and start off on the right foot.

4:18

It just refers to.

4:20

Beginning something, well, doing something great from the very beginning.

4:25

So again, our second method, describe what you see.

4:30

This leads us to our third method.

4:33

Our third method is the three things method.

4:39

I love.

4:40

Working in threes or speaking in threes.

4:43

The three things method.

4:44

This method helps you reflect on your day and practice, organizing your

4:49

thoughts clearly in three simple parts.

4:53

So let's break this down.

4:55

How you can actually utilize this method.

4:57

So you are gonna say one thing you did today.

5:00

Think about your day, the activities you did, the people you met,

5:04

say one thing you did today.

5:06

One thing you learned and one thing you plan for tomorrow.

5:11

Again, one thing you did today in activity, one thing you learned, and then

5:17

finally one thing you plan for tomorrow.

5:20

Now we have these three things again, the method, the three things, method.

5:25

Now let's check out an example utilizing this.

5:29

Three things method.

5:30

Keep in mind again, one thing you did today.

5:33

One thing you learned and one thing you'll do tomorrow.

5:36

Here's the example.

5:37

Today I cooked pasta.

5:39

I learned the word efficient, which means doing something without wasting time.

5:44

Tomorrow I'll watch a podcast episode to stay on track with my English goals today.

5:52

What I learned and also what I'm gonna do tomorrow.

5:56

Now we did see two new terms, again, efficient and stay on track.

6:01

Efficient just means productive without wasting time and stay on track.

6:07

Just means continuing progressing or continuing to progress to toward a goal.

6:12

Stay on track.

6:14

So again, our second method we spoke about.

6:18

Now we have our third method, the three things method.

6:22

So you're understanding even when you are alone, you still can study and

6:25

learn English to improve your fluency.

6:28

Now we're moving on to method number four.

6:31

Method number four is expand every answer.

6:36

Expand every answer.

6:38

This method trains you to give longer, more detailed answers instead of

6:44

short responses, helping you sound more conversational and confident,

6:50

you need to expand your answers.

6:52

Now, how do you actually do this?

6:54

How do you do this?

6:55

So you take a basic question, just a basic question.

7:00

And you give one answer plus two details.

7:04

Again, basic question, you give one answer and two details.

7:09

This helps you to grow your speaking length.

7:13

I gave my answer and then two details.

7:16

Now I want us to check out an example of how this actually works, but before

7:21

I give you the example, if you want to continue studying each and every day

7:25

being consistent, I want you to enroll in the system that I've created for you.

7:30

It's called the 365 day English Fluency System.

7:33

One lesson each day of the year.

7:36

You don't have to think about it.

7:37

All you have to do is go to www.speakenglishwithTiffani.com/

7:43

3 6 5 system.

7:45

Again, www.speakenglishwithTiffani.com/ 3 6 5 system.

7:52

I've prepared it for you to follow each day of the year to improve your English.

7:57

Now with this method we're speaking about now, method number four.

8:01

There's an example right here.

8:03

I ate oatmeal because it's nutritious and because it helps

8:09

me start my day off strong.

8:12

I ate oatmeal because it's nutritious and because it helps

8:15

me start my day off strong.

8:17

What did I do?

8:18

Ate oatmeal two.

8:19

Details nutritious and helps me start my day off strong.

8:23

Now, what does the term nutritious mean?

8:26

Nutritious just means healthy and start my day off.

8:30

Strong just means begin with energy.

8:33

So we see method number four, a very powerful method to use

8:37

when you're studying alone.

8:39

Expand every answer.

8:41

You're giving the answer.

8:42

And then two details leading us to method number five.

8:46

Method number five is summarize and react.

8:51

Again, summarize and react.

8:54

This method helps you practice critical thinking and speaking

8:58

by summarizing content.

9:00

You've consumed, and then adding your own thoughts and reactions to it.

9:05

Summarize what you've consumed and then share your thoughts,

9:08

your opinions, your reactions.

9:10

So how can you actually do this?

9:14

Summarize something you read or watched.

9:17

Think about something you read or that you watched.

9:19

Summarize it.

9:21

Then share your opinion on that thing that you read or watched,

9:25

and then add a personal connection.

9:28

Summarizing, giving your feelings and then adding a personal connection.

9:32

Now, I want us to check out an example of this So here we go.

9:36

Summary plus opinion, plus personal connection.

9:39

I recently read an article about how remote work is changing the workplace.

9:44

The article explained that most employees feel happier working from home

9:48

because they have a better work life balance, but some people feel isolated.

9:52

Personally, I think remote work is revolutionary because it gives people

9:56

more freedom over their schedules.

9:59

This really speaks to me because when I study English at home, I can

10:02

make the most of my time without distractions from commuting or office

10:06

interruptions summarized gave your opinion and then a personal connection.

10:13

This is why this method is so powerful.

10:15

Summarizing.

10:17

Giving your opinion and then a personal connection.

10:19

Now, there were two terms.

10:20

The first term was revolutionary.

10:23

This just means causing major change or innovation.

10:27

Revolutionary.

10:28

The iPhone was revolutionary when it came out and make the most of this

10:33

expression just refers to using something effectively to get the best results.

10:39

Again, using something effectively to get the best results.

10:43

This leads us to method number six.

10:46

Method number six is the what if game Again, the what if game.

10:52

Now this method encourages creative thinking by asking imaginative what if

10:59

questions, and answering them freely, helping you practice spontaneous

11:04

speaking and build confidence in expressing hypothetical ideas.

11:09

What if.

11:10

Conjecture guessing, not sure.

11:13

Let's check out how you can actually do this.

11:16

When you're studying alone, you're gonna ask the imaginative question.

11:20

What if?

11:21

Think of different.

11:22

What if questions related to what you're discussing or what you're thinking about?

11:27

Then answer freely, build spontaneous speaking by doing this.

11:32

Hey, what if this happens?

11:34

What if this happens?

11:35

And just think about it and give your own answers.

11:38

Okay?

11:39

Here's what this would look like.

11:40

What if, so, what would you do if you met your favorite teacher?

11:45

Here's the response you could give.

11:47

If I met my favorite.

11:49

Actor or teacher, I'd be starstruck, but I'd break the

11:53

ice by asking what inspires them.

11:56

Now the question said teacher, but the response said actor,

11:58

so you can interchange them.

11:59

Okay.

12:00

What would you do if you met your favorite teacher or your favorite actor?

12:05

Again, just give an answer.

12:07

What are your thoughts?

12:08

Now we did see these two terms.

12:10

These two terms.

12:11

Starstruck just means amazed by someone famous.

12:15

And then break the ice.

12:17

Start a friendly conversation.

12:20

All right, so again, this method, method number six, the what if

12:25

game, just adding what if questions.

12:28

This leads us to method number seven, practice explaining how things work.

12:34

Again, practice explaining how things work.

12:38

This method helps you practice clear explanations and builds your

12:43

ability to use sequence words and logical transitions while describing

12:48

processes you already understand.

12:51

It helps you practice giving clear explanation.

12:55

So how can you actually do this?

12:57

Let's break this down.

12:58

All right, so you are gonna choose a process or system that you

13:03

already understand maybe how to make a cake, maybe how to make tea.

13:07

Think of a process you already understand, then explain it step by

13:12

step in English as you're doing this.

13:17

Use transition.

13:18

Words like first.

13:20

Then, and finally, as you're going through the steps of the process,

13:25

let's see what this would look like.

13:27

Again, Let me explain how to send an email.

13:30

First.

13:30

You open your email app and click on compose to start a new message.

13:35

Then you type the recipient's email address in the two field

13:39

and add a concise subject line that gets straight to the point.

13:44

Next, you write your message in the body section, making

13:47

sure it's clear and polite.

13:49

Finally, you review everything and click send.

13:53

The whole process is straightforward once you practice it a few times.

13:57

Very simple steps, right?

13:59

We've all sent an email before, right?

14:01

So you're just explaining the steps in English.

14:05

Now, there were two terms that were new.

14:07

So the first one, actually three.

14:08

The first one was concise.

14:10

It just means brief and to the point, getting right to the point.

14:15

Next, straightforward.

14:17

Now straightforward just means simple and easy to understand.

14:21

And finally get straight to the point.

14:25

This means to communicate directly without unnecessary details.

14:29

I like getting straight to the point.

14:31

I like helping you understand what is needed, what is necessary.

14:36

Let's get straight to the point.

14:39

I hope you enjoy this lesson, and I hope these methods help you.

14:42

Don't forget.

14:43

If you want to get straight to the point each and every day of the year

14:46

and follow my system, that will take you from intermediate to advanced.

14:50

All you have to do is go to www.speakenglishwithTiffani.com/

14:56

3 6 5 system and start following my daily system.

15:00

I will talk to you in the next lesson.

15:17

You still there?

15:19

You know what time it is?

15:21

It's story time.

15:24

I said it story time.

15:26

All right, so today's story is a story that I have told many

15:32

times and it's a story that still.

15:36

It still makes me laugh when I think about the situation.

15:40

So, um, this happened when I was living in South Korea and when I was

15:44

in South Korea as an English teacher.

15:47

We had interesting schedules.

15:49

Our schedules would require us sometimes to teach class at 6:00 AM then teach class

15:54

at 2:00 PM and then have a class at 8:00 PM So we taught all throughout the day.

15:58

Now, even though we had breaks in the middle of the day, it

16:01

was still quite tiring at times.

16:04

This semester, this term, I had a 6:00 AM class, so I lived with two other women.

16:10

So we had a three bedroom apartment.

16:12

They had a later schedule than me, so I would normally get home first

16:16

and I'd be knocked out before they finished their evening classes.

16:19

So they would come home and they didn't have to be quiet

16:22

because I sleep quite well.

16:23

I'm not a light sleeper.

16:25

So they would come home and do what they had to do in the evening, but

16:27

I would already be knocked out.

16:29

So in the evenings we really wouldn't talk as much because I was sleeping.

16:33

Now this one evening, um, well, no, it was the middle of the night.

16:36

I think it may have been 1130 or almost midnight, and I was knocked out again.

16:42

My roommates were talking, but I didn't even hear them.

16:44

But I kept hearing this noise above.

16:48

And it was getting louder and louder and it sounded like a kid running around.

16:52

That was almost midnight.

16:53

I'm in my sleep, I'm not a light sleeper and I hear this stomping.

16:56

Then I hear screaming and then yelling Like a kid though, like

17:00

he's not listening to his parents.

17:02

And I tried to withstand, but it woke me up out of my sleep.

17:05

So I'm very tired 'cause I have to get up again.

17:07

I teach at 6:00 AM so I had to get up at 4:00 AM to prepare.

17:11

So it's midnight and I'm hearing him screaming and I'm

17:13

like, okay, it'll stop soon.

17:14

Nope.

17:15

Kept screaming, running around the house.

17:18

So I said, I'm gonna have to go upstairs.

17:21

And remember, I'm in Korea.

17:22

I was in Korea,

17:25

our apartment, we spoke English, but everyone else in that building spoke

17:29

Korean because they were Koreans.

17:30

But I had spoke Korean this time.

17:33

So I got up and I opened my door and it's midnight.

17:35

So my roommates were in shock, like Tiff, because I never was awake when they

17:39

got home or when they were up talking.

17:42

And I looked at them and I said.

17:44

I'll be back.

17:46

And they were like, okay, because it was loud, they could hear it too.

17:49

So I put my house shoes, I had my pajamas on.

17:52

I put my house shoes on, my shoes on to go out the sandals, and I walked

17:55

upstairs and I knocked on the door.

17:58

Now again, I want you to think about this.

18:00

I'm an African American woman.

18:02

I'm living in South Korea.

18:04

My students know me, but other people don't know me in the

18:06

building, so I knock on the door.

18:07

Midnight, the door opens.

18:10

Now, of course, the woman is in shock because.

18:13

First she's thinking, do I have to speak English?

18:15

I don't know English.

18:17

And there's this black woman in front of my door.

18:18

What?

18:19

I could see it written all of her face, but I was too tired.

18:21

And I saw the little boy standing next to her.

18:24

So I looked at her, looked at the boy, looked back at her, and I knew it

18:27

was a mom trying to control her kid.

18:28

And I know it was, I knew it was rough, but I was tired.

18:31

So I looked at her, and then I started speaking Korean, and

18:34

then I saw the shock again.

18:35

Come on her face.

18:37

She relaxed because she didn't have to use English, but she was also in

18:40

shock, like, what's happening right now?

18:41

It's the middle of the night.

18:42

Who is this woman?

18:43

And she's speaking to me in Korean.

18:44

In Korean.

18:45

I said, ma'am, I have to get up for work in the morning.

18:49

I teach class at 6:00 AM and I just was rattling all this off in in Korean.

18:52

I have to sleep.

18:54

I'm not a light sleeper, but your son is running around and

18:56

screaming and I need him to be quiet and I need to go back to sleep.

18:59

Please take care of him, and I was very respectful.

19:02

Her response caught me off guard.

19:04

I just said that and I asked her to please quiet him down.

19:06

He's standing right there.

19:07

She looks at me and says, I can't, can you?

19:10

I said, I said, I said, what?

19:13

So it kind of woke me up and I was like, huh?

19:15

She said, I'm trying.

19:16

So I looked at the little boy, I said, little boy again, all

19:20

in Korean, I have to sleep.

19:23

So what you're not gonna do is make any more noise the rest of the night.

19:26

Do you understand me again?

19:28

Probably the first African American woman he has ever seen.

19:31

He looked at me.

19:32

Yes, ma'am.

19:34

I said, thank you very much.

19:35

I'm going back downstairs.

19:36

I don't wanna hear anything else.

19:37

I'm going to sleep.

19:39

She looked at me and said, thank you.

19:41

I said, you're welcome.

19:43

And I went back downstairs, opened the door.

19:45

My roommates looked at me and I said, everything's fine.

19:48

And I went back to my room, shut my door, and I was knocked out

19:51

and I did not hear another noise the rest of the night after that.

19:55

I never heard another noise.

19:57

Slept well.

19:57

Now it got even funnier because a few days, or maybe a week or two later.

20:02

I was telling my roommates exactly what happened, and my roommate that lives on

20:05

the opposite side of our apartment, so she lived on the master bedroom side,

20:10

which is where I guess the mom lived.

20:11

She said, well, TIFF, I'm so happy that happened.

20:13

She said, now it's louder on my side.

20:15

I said, what do you mean?

20:16

The little boy now was in his mom room.

20:18

He said, I can't make any noise on that side where that lady lives,

20:21

but on the opposite side, my mom's room, I'm gonna make noise.

20:23

So my roommate now was hearing it, but she was a, a night owl, so she

20:26

was awake, but she was just like.

20:28

Now I have to deal with the tiff.

20:29

So we just laughed.

20:30

But again, I was very respectful.

20:33

The lady was very appreciative and I never even saw them again after that.

20:37

But I also never dealt with any noise.

20:39

I hope you enjoyed this story and I'll talk to you next time.

20:43

I.
