Audiophile sound UNDER $100. (Old school Sony)
FULL TRANSCRIPT
now just because you can spend a lot of
money on a headphone it doesn't mean
that you should I've got three
headphones here today two of which you
can get for under $50 that are truly
High Fidelity let's talk about it here's
the three headphones the first one is
the Sony cd900st the second is the
7506 and the third one is the V6 now
something you'll notice is that all
three of these don't have the stock pads
I went through yak catalog and actually
purchased this set of pads myself Yaki
sent me these other pads this video is
not sponsored but these pads do improve
the frequency response of these three
headphones the cd900st here well it's
using the yxi St Pad 2 it's definitely
the most spacious of the three and we'll
talk about sound in just a second the
7506 is using the deluxe Yi St pad not
two the one and the mdrv6 is using the
St pad ad micro suede I tested a ton of
pads on these three headphones to find
out which ones would measure and sound
the best so let's get into a subjective
sound we'll talk about frequency
response and measurements in just a bit
first off is the cd900st now I already
did a full video on this headphone you
can check it out on the headphone show
I'll have it linked in the video
description I'll also have all these
pads and everything down there just so
you can find out what it is that I'm
talking about and what pairs best more
or less the cd900st is an honest
headphone it's very truthful it does
have a fair bit of trouble but it
doesn't extend past diffuse field but
more than anything it tends to level out
around a diffuse field curve so a pretty
honest headphone just relatively similar
to how the human ear responds it has
some dips and Peaks throughout the
response but it's not insane overall
it's just a good headphone to use for
things like video editing but I also
enjoy it the MDR 756 is the closest
between the three to a true neutral
headphone it's very similar to if you
take diffuse field and add a 10 DB
downward slope from 20 to 20K which is
pretty close to what you see in line
with the Harmon research though with a
bit less of a base shelf these still do
have very deep extended base it's punchy
it's Dynamic it's just all around very
balanced very good then the
mdrv6 well it's a bit less Airy than the
7506 despite having well similarly
measuring trouble you'll see that in a
bit but what it does have is notably
more subbase so more Harmon like subbase
this one is very deep very punchy very
extended it's not overwhelming base but
it's enough subbase to uh definitely
have some kick to it and much more out
the three so you'll see the way I have
them lined up from left to right it
basically is the same way they sound
leaning towards treble neutral leaning
towards base it's as simple as that and
as far as technicalities are concerned
well they all sound basically the same
they all have similar Sound Stage detail
Imaging all of those things and those
faculties are not wowing they're not
going to blow your mind but they are
good all these headphones are decent at
sound localization so they're very good
at Imaging pinpointing the direction the
sound is coming from but also feeling
out the mic so if you have a microphone
placed in a room you can really tell how
far that microphone is from the
instrument from the singer and so on but
they don't have the stage to make it
quite as immersive as some of your more
audio file focused headphones but in a
sense that also keeps them honest
they're not insanely overwhelmingly
euphoric but basically every song is
going to get a fair play on them versus
some of my audio file headphones some
songs really Excel and some not quite so
much on these I feel like everything has
an even playing field and at their price
well that's really nice to have these
the 76s and the v6s you can both get on
eBay for under $50 the pads are another
20 to 30 which makes this a sub $100
headphone the same with the mdrv6 the
cd900st they're a little bit more
expensive than that but they're also not
insane any of these I would by used
because they basically last forever the
downside is they do have hard attached
cables but the cables are pretty durable
and if you really need to you can
replace them I replaced it on my cd900st
for a shorter one I would say all these
headphones are very good for someone who
just wants something that is neutral
leaning with one of those three flavors
either dead- on neutral a bit more bass
a bit more treble a Clos back something
good for monitoring definitely something
for work or for video editing now let's
look at frequency response I'm going to
start off with the cd900st and we did
this one with multiple output impedances
tested now I also have the raw
measurements up here for you it's
showing a diffuse field curve for the
4128 that's what I'm compensating to on
these compensated measurements and then
the actual Target line for the
compensated measurements is a 10 D
downward tilt something to note the bnk
4128 the measurement rig I'm using for
this does tend to show a trouble Peak on
most headphones somewhere in the
ballpark of 10 KZ now I'm not going to
say that these don't have some elevation
in that region because they definitely
do but it's not as severe as the peak
we're seeing seeing in these
measurements a lot of that is the rig
itself on the cd900st here we can see
that it has decent base so it does start
to roll when it gets really deep and it
basically likes to ride the line around
diffuse field and diffuse field without
much of a slope just straight up diffuse
field we see a bit of a recess at 2K we
see it Peak back up around 3.2k which is
a little bit farther up than the natural
peak of ear gain but pretty close it's a
region that people shouldn't be too
bothered by it recesses around 6K which
is actually a fre range I know a lot of
people are bothered by which is nice so
that kind of dip back in makes it a
little bit more tolerable for things
that are treble heavy and then we start
to roll off after say about 15 16 khz
probably about 15 khz now in this the
red line is normal Alid impedance the
blue line is high output impedance I'm
not seeing a difference in frequency
response realistically between output
impedance for this headphone despite it
having a nonlinear impedance let's move
on to the
7506 now we see more subbase we see more
extended base overall the mid-range is
really solid we do have a little bit of
a bump around 400 HZ and then levels
back out we don't see nearly as much of
a recess around the 2K region again we
start to peek around 3K subtly another
dip at 6K which is nice and then we go
back into the Resonance of the rig which
still again there's definitely some
elevated frequency there but it's not
quite as severe as what we're seeing
overall the 7506 well it's really
similar to diffuse field with 10 D slope
that's a really good result this is a
very neutral overall headphone
especially at its price makes it very
hard to beat and that also means it
would take very easily to things like EQ
now on a high output impedance which is
the blue line here you do see a bit of a
change so we see maybe a 3 D difference
between the base and the absolute center
of the frequency response around 1 khz
so you'll notice a little bit more base
a little bit less mid-range and treble
if you're using this on a high output
impedance amp um or or a tube amp or
anything like that but you could also do
that with an impedance adapter so you
can plug up a 40 Ohm resistor to this
headphone in line and get the same
frequency response effects and the
higher impedance of resistor you plug in
the more of that kind of Base shelf
you're going to start to get and then
the mdrv6 you can kind of see the trend
now here I imagine even more subbase we
have a little bit of a recess around 200
Hertz pretty solid mid-range throughout
we have that dip a little bit again
around 2K less recession around 6 khz
but it's still there and then back up
into the treble now overall this looks
like it would have more treble than the
mdr7506 but because that base elevation
it doesn't sound like it the 7506 sounds
more Airy than the V6 does it sounds
more full and the treble despite the V6
also being very close now the V6 is
really good it's the most harmonik of
the three headphones and I have a really
hard time picking between these which
one I like the most I pull up all three
of them side by side for you there we go
and you can see the trend more treble
leaning straight on NE neutral a little
bit more bass leaning and that's why I
have all three in my collection because
some days I want one or the other but
they're all a very similar overall sound
I use the cd900st the most for things
like playing escape from tarov or
listening to records or things like that
for almost all my other listening when
I'm using one of these three I prefer
the sound of the 7506 with these yxi
pads but there are also times when I'm
listening to something that is
electronic or very cinematic with deep
rumbling bass but I want to pull out the
mdrv6 just to get my bass fill but it's
nice having a headphone with capable
bass that doesn't sacrifice the rest of
the frequency response to do it which is
a Cardinal S A lot of headphones make
when you get really good base sometimes
you lose out on everything else and all
three of these headphones do balance in
their own unique way but also without
making major sacrifices now again
they're not as exciting as as stagy as
immersive as some other things like some
focals and whatnot but it's also a
headphone that you can get both the
headphone the pads the TXS the shipping
all that stuff for less than 100 bucks
and at that price well it's basically
impossible to beat in fact I would take
the 7506 in many cases over the AKG K
361 and 371 but it really depends on
what you're after the 361 371 are also
fantastic um but the build is better on
the 7506 it's a more kind of time tested
design and the akg's have had a little
bit more of a mixed history with their
build reliability despite being great
sounding headphones so maybe one of
these is for you maybe it's not but
there are three headphones that I
purchased that I went through measured
all the various pads on and found these
pads that work best for them I really
enjoy them personally and they're going
to stay in my collection in fact
recently I moved and for 2 weeks the
only headphones I had out were these
guys I'm still using them a lot the
reason I'm not wearing them for this
video is cuz I have my 6xx on but I
think we're going to wrap it up here if
