0:00

does Kathy Wood know something we don't

0:01

about Elon Musk when I interviewed Kathy

0:04

Wood in person and I'll show you some

0:06

clips here when I interviewed her in

0:08

person at my event in Vegas thank you to

0:10

all of those who came uh Kathy Wood made

0:13

it very clear that she stands with Elon

0:15

she stands for the Compensation Plan she

0:17

thought it was unamerican for people to

0:19

vote against the compensation plan and

0:21

when I pressed her on but Kathy why do

0:23

you have Elon calling things like Dojo a

0:26

long shot her answer was really

0:30

interesting now I'll show the context

0:32

from the actual event uh but we had more

0:35

of a discussion outside of what was on

0:37

camera as well and it's entirely fair to

0:41

make it very clear what Kathy's position

0:44

here is but first let's listen to the

0:45

clip and then of course you've got

0:47

Tesla designing its own more special

0:51

purpose Gip why do you think Elon called

0:54

Dojo uh a sort of a oh if I remember the

0:57

phrase correctly it was sort of a high

1:00

risk um not the phrase wasn't YOLO that

1:04

he used but it it almost sounded like uh

1:06

he was making a bet and he didn't think

1:08

it had a lot of success in one of the

1:09

prior earnings calls why do you think he

1:11

would water down Dojo just for reference

1:14

because the quote helps the quote is and

1:17

we're pursuing the Dual path of Nvidia

1:19

and dojo this is from the Q4 earnings

1:21

call with Tesla Elon Musk is saying this

1:23

quote but I would think of Dojo as a

1:25

long shot it's a long shot worth taking

1:28

because the payoff is potentially very

1:29

high high but it's not something that is

1:31

a high probability it's not like a sure

1:34

thing at all it's a high-risk High

1:36

payoff program Dojo is working and it's

1:38

doing training jobs and we're scaling it

1:40

up and we have plans for Dojo 1.5 Dojo 2

1:43

Dojo 3 and whatnot so I think it's got

1:45

potential but I can't emphasize enough

1:47

it's high risk High payoff why do you

1:49

think he would water down Dojo cuz he

1:53

wanted invid gpus no honestly that is

1:56

what I think happen it's a manipulation

1:58

ah yeah don't worry about Dojo give us

2:00

your chips so in if he is a

2:03

Shyer if youil he's brilliant if you

2:06

listen to the share holder um the the

2:09

shareholder meeting that uh Elon just

2:12

had yeah he did say he said he he he

2:17

said he was ramping on dojo had all the

2:21

admiration for NVIDIA something like

2:23

that all the respect for NVIDIA but you

2:26

know he's he's I think he thinks he can

2:29

do this see Kathy has this mindset that

2:33

Elon Musk is playing 4D chess he knows

2:37

what he's doing okay right now we need

2:39

these h100s to get the fastest leg up on

2:42

FSD then let's go all in on dojo making

2:45

them think we're not a competitor and

2:47

we're going to come slingshot past them

2:49

in the future Tesla could quite

2:51

interestingly be one of the greatest

2:53

chip competitors to Nvidia now a lot of

2:55

people are like how is that possible

2:56

nvidia's got Cuda and all this Tesla has

2:59

their own software Suite as well their

3:01

app their vehicle software suite so

3:03

software is absolutely something you can

3:05

build now don't get me wrong I'm not

3:06

suggesting that Tesla's coding stack is

3:09

going to compete directly with Cuda and

3:11

it doesn't really need to because what

3:12

you need dojo for or specific

3:14

applications uh and what I think is

3:17

really incredible is which I think a lot

3:19

of folks forgot is that neither of them

3:21

manufacture their own chips Tesla

3:24

doesn't manufacture their own chips

3:25

Nvidia doesn't manufacture its own chips

3:27

they just design their own chips Nvidia

3:30

is a really good chip designer and

3:33

marketer they're not a chip manufacturer

3:36

but what's interesting and I've learned

3:38

this from uh meeting for coffee Martin

3:40

uh V over from Tesla's investor

3:42

relations group when one company does

3:45

something

3:46

Innovative and then they have someone

3:48

else manufacture it like a heat pump or

3:51

an Nvidia h100 the manufacturer

3:54

learns huh yeah that's how we can do

3:58

that so then when somebody else calls

4:00

like Elon with dojo and says I want to

4:01

do something like that or maybe even

4:03

take it to the next level they're like

4:04

yeah we think we could do that we

4:06

learned how to do that from Nvidia I

4:08

mean we learned how to do that in our

4:09

manufacturing experience this is really

4:12

interesting and I think the moat of

4:15

Nidia might be getting chopped away from

4:18

other competitors much sooner than

4:20

individuals think now this isn't

4:21

designed to be an anti- Nvidia play you

4:23

know or video uh I think I've been very

4:25

clear that I think that Nvidia is topped

4:28

uh I think that uh Nvidia for me is

4:31

something that I'm open to reducing in

4:32

position size which I've already reduced

4:35

and I'm more interested in increasing

4:36

exposure to plays like frankly Amazon

4:39

Tesla Apple for on device AI That's

4:42

clear but let's listen a little bit more

4:44

to uh Kathy because I asked Kathy then

4:47

okay so if he's so good at 4D chess why

4:50

why does he like you know Trump

4:52

essentially isn't Trump going to

4:53

potentially be bad for electric vehicles

4:55

yes we know Trump says that oh Americans

4:58

deserve a choice they can choose elri or

5:00

they could choose ice but El or musk has

5:03

also spent a lot of time bagging on

5:05

electric vehicles and Kathy's reaction

5:09

while limited speaks volumes listen to

5:11

it here uh what about you've got you

5:15

mentioned that you think EVS or you're

5:17

projecting that EVS are going to be 75%

5:19

of the market in 5 to 7 years so what

5:22

happens when you have let's say a trump

5:23

presidency who seems to be highly

5:25

anti-v so interesting to see Elon Musk

5:29

and former president Trump cozying up to

5:32

one another again isn't it and um I I

5:37

actually think if you think you know in

5:40

terms of Tesla being becoming the

5:42

Marquee auto manufacturer here in the

5:46

US um I think he'll rally around that

5:49

you know Trump trump can he's he's very

5:53

practical it's a great Insight I I love

5:55

how you have this this view of Elon he's

5:58

like he's doing that for a reason in

6:00

he's not a knucklehead he's doing for so

6:02

why does he send all these political

6:03

tweets do you have a rationalization for

6:05

that you know I think uh Elon has

6:09

learned that no publicity is bad

6:11

publicity and he's just out there

6:14

effectively advertising himself and

6:16

therefore for his

6:17

cars brilliant answer thank you see what

6:20

you have is Kathy who looks at Elon and

6:23

says everything he's doing is for a

6:25

reason he's cozying up to Trump maybe

6:27

because he thinks Trump is going to win

6:29

he's cozying up to Nvidia while

6:33

downplaying his own so he can get what

6:34

he needs and then he can advance

6:38

past he's

6:40

potentially yapping in social media the

6:43

way he does because he knows it's cheap

6:45

free advertising people see an you know

6:48

complaint article about Elon they think

6:50

oh yeah he made all those Teslas by the

6:52

way honey we're in the market for a new

6:54

car should we look at electric vehicles

6:56

all right well we may as well compare

6:57

the Tesla to the others I think get a

7:00

lot of publicity if people are thinking

7:02

about an electric vehicle and are

7:04

curious and want to compare Vehicles

7:06

Tesla will sell deal it's a very

7:09

interesting point of view and I don't

7:11

know if I fully agree with all of it I

7:13

think it's a potentially a little bit

7:14

too bullish uh I generally don't like to

7:17

be and I'm not saying that Cathy is but

7:19

I generally don't like to think that uh

7:21

everyone is doing everything for the

7:23

perfect reason and it's all just meant

7:25

to be uh that takes a lot of faith uh I

7:28

do think that people can flber uh FL

7:31

Flubber FL I don't know people can make

7:33

a mistake investing in Tesla brilliant

7:36

man somewhat

7:38

tormented but in his own words he even

7:40

said I shoot myself in the foot so often

7:44

I should invest in cavalar

7:47

Boots when he says something like that

7:49

I'm wondering what kind of guard rails

7:52

are there to protect us investors from

7:55

his natural tendency I mean I love the

7:57

man but I'm kind of like and Kevin I

7:59

think sometimes you're frustrated by

8:01

some of the things he does as well so

8:03

I'm just kind of curious on your take

8:05

yeah and I've had the the privilege of

8:08

meeting him and the team around him

8:10

which is really important um so I think

8:14

and and Robin denol chair um so learning

8:19

about the people around him Robert's

8:21

great I met her at the shareholder

8:22

meeting last year she she is amazing um

8:25

very solid very objective very um you

8:29

know and so having met him I I feel like

8:34

I know him in a way he cares so much

8:39

about Humanity it's a big a big uh a big

8:44

weight on his shoulder to save us from

8:47

ourselves

8:49

environmentally and you know whether

8:51

it's you know prevent censorship or

8:54

whatever um he he is a very good person

8:59

and I really realize he gets he gets he

9:01

says crazy things and you know he is a

9:04

little trump-like in some ways because

9:07

because what I say to our investors I

9:10

watch what he does from a technology

9:13

point of view he is so laser focused

9:17

more than any CEO and the other thing he

9:20

has going for him that I don't think

9:22

very many CEOs have going is he's he's a

9:28

maestro of the convergence among

9:30

technologies that is taking place in

9:33

this technology Revolution uh Robo taxis

9:36

are autonomous taxi networks are you

9:38

know the convergence of robots energy

9:41

storage and AI you

9:44

know most people when they think of a

9:47

company like Tesla they think of Autos

9:50

sure he wasn't thinking that way at all

9:53

and I think he's capitalizing on you

9:56

know the convergence among Technologies

9:58

and will continue to do so um in a way

10:03

that are is going to surprise people I

10:06

think so for my own um you we have to of

10:10

course do our due diligence and make

10:13

sure that uh you know that the

10:15

management is strong and intact and has

10:18

the right kind of incentives and all of

10:20

that um I think a lot of what he has

10:23

done and been rewarded for is this

10:26

thought that no publicity is bad

10:28

publicity and so so it gets everybody

10:30

talking and up in arms but he says what

10:32

he really

10:33

thinks there's there's conviction there

10:36

so um again we just have to and we

10:39

regularly have calls with the management

10:41

team around around more more so than

10:44

Elon right uh but we do meet with uh

10:47

Elon from time to time I don't like to

10:49

meet with CEOs too often uh just because

10:53

we need to keep objectivity and really

10:55

the business people around him you know

10:57

who are executing have to have to have

11:01

their marching their leadership you know

11:04

leader from investor relations Martin I

11:06

know he just left but yes he always a

11:08

good oh he was wonderful uh the goal is

11:10

to find folks who make fewer mistakes

11:13

than others and that when they make the

11:14

mistakes that they do they're smaller

11:16

and not as bad so uh I'm optimistic on

11:19

Elon I don't know that I'm as optimistic

11:23

that Tesla's Dojo computers can hold a

11:25

candle to Nvidia but I could see how

11:27

they could do it like that Manufacturing

11:29

Insight I just gave you I could see huh

11:32

this is going to be something I'm going

11:33

to pay attention to a little bit more

11:34

because I almost fully wrote it off

11:37

after that earnings call with Elon and

11:39

Kathy gave me the perspective to say

11:41

well maybe maybe don't go that

11:44

far maybe it's all part of the plan

11:49

anyway thank you so much for watching

11:51

let's fingers cross to Tesla over 200

11:54

and holding it this week thanks so much

11:56

we'll see you in the next one goodbye

11:57
