0:02

hello welcome to Jays helpful videos

0:05

today I'm going to be replacing some old

0:08

andersen windows that I have in my home

0:10

that close to 40 years old I'm going to

0:12

be replacing them with Anderson's

0:14

conversion kit

0:16

it's the Andersen 400 series narrow line

0:19

double hung windows pretty simple to do

0:23

I'll go step by step so this way I'll

0:26

make your project a little bit easier

0:28

the first step is to remove the upper

0:31

screws on both the inner and outer Ceph

0:41

[Music]

1:06

next what you want to do is raise up

1:08

both the outer and inter sash and remove

1:13

the remaining screws on the left-hand

1:15

side with all of the screws removed I'm

1:29

going to go ahead and remove this lower

1:31

left sash to do so I'm going to go ahead

1:35

and pull out this front edge first and

1:42

then we'll go ahead and pull it out next

1:47

you want to lower both the inner and

1:49

outer sash to the lowest position and

1:52

you want to cut the cords as close to

1:54

the header as possible I'm using a pair

1:58

of wire cutters I'll do that for both

2:04

sides

2:08

with the chords cut and the lower-left

2:11

gin removed good then go ahead just a

2:18

little bit pull out the inner window and

2:22

do the same thing for the outer window

2:24

with the windows out of place I can go

2:27

ahead and remove the remaining left

2:28

champ as well as the right jab again to

2:33

remove the jam go ahead and push on this

2:36

inner edge to get it free you do that

2:39

all the way up and then you'll be able

2:41

to pull that whole jamb away with the

2:46

jams out of place I'm gonna go ahead and

2:48

replace the screws that I removed on the

2:51

Left Jam and anywhere else on the other

2:54

jams where I had screws I didn't have

2:56

any other screws so it says to use a

2:59

screw that is a half inch longer than

3:02

what was in the original holders it also

3:05

says to put a two and a half inch nail

3:07

in the center of both sides of the jams

3:12

making sure not to put them into grooves

3:15

because that's where the new jams are

3:18

gonna sit in so put a right in this side

3:19

two here two and a half inch screw as

3:22

well as filling the other holes wherever

3:24

you took screws out to remove the jams

3:37

a very important step is to cut back

3:56

this parting Jam this is the piece that

3:59

sits between the two windows you need to

4:03

cut that back a quarter inch on each

4:05

side when I did my first window I

4:07

thought this was cut back enough and I

4:09

didn't need to do it but in fact you do

4:11

need to cut it back a quarter of an inch

4:14

I said it this way the new jam will sit

4:18

behind that so using utility knife you

4:26

can just score it here's a little

4:32

helpful tip well I have these jams out

4:35

of place I'm gonna go ahead and clean

4:37

behind here on both sides clean off the

4:40

whole sill before I put the new jams in

4:42

place I cleaned the windowsill as well

4:47

as both jams made sure they were free of

4:50

any old varnish or any old silicone now

4:56

I'm going to go ahead and put a quarter

4:58

inch bead of silicone sealant between

5:03

the jam and the outer frame member on

5:08

both sides

5:19

now we're ready to install our new jams

5:21

we have a left and right Jam to identify

5:25

the top end it has two insulating plugs

5:28

on it also the bottom has one insulating

5:33

plug and it's cut on an angle to match

5:36

the windowsill angle next what you need

5:40

to do is separate the inner from the

5:47

outer Jim we're gonna stole the outer

5:50

Jam first and then we'll install the

5:52

inner Jam this inside Jam this is the

5:58

front edge that goes to the outside and

6:01

this is the back edge which is inside

6:04

the house you can see this has a little

6:08

flexible weather strip on it that needs

6:11

to sit along the outer side of this

6:15

outside framing these barbed legs two of

6:22

them need to line up with the slots that

6:26

are on the left and right side of the

6:28

jam alright put the outer GM in place

6:34

you need to line up the legs with the

6:38

slots better in the jam

6:49

and we go ahead and push it in with my

6:51

finger you could feel it snaps it push

6:55

that in down the entire length then I'm

6:59

going to do what I'm going to do is I'm

7:00

gonna use a piece of wood to make sure

7:03

it's seated all the way now I'm gonna

7:07

use a piece of wood I'm gonna go down

7:08

the entire length with a rubber mallet

7:10

and make sure it's seated all the way

7:44

okay now the inner jamb I'm gonna go

7:47

ahead and put in this back edge you tuck

7:50

in and then the front edge you want to

7:52

tuck behind this weatherstrip that's

7:56

here go ahead and put it in making sure

8:02

top lined up first

8:17

with a back edge tucked in now we just

8:20

need the front edge I'll use a

8:23

screwdriver to pull this out a little

8:24

bit go ahead and push that all the way

8:28

in down the full length okay once that's

8:32

in place you'll notice that has a little

8:34

bit of give to it a little bit of flex

8:36

which helps to tighten against the

8:40

windows you can see it's behind the

8:43

gasket that's here might be difficult to

8:45

see in the video so both the back and

8:47

front edge are tucked into the inner gym

8:52

just want to show you a close-up shot of

8:55

the outer weather stripping on the

8:59

outside of the brick mold I also want to

9:02

show you a close-up picture that this is

9:06

sitting inside it has a little bit of

9:10

flex to it can you see that

9:11

flex is in and out if this was sitting

9:15

on the outside you'd have a problem

9:16

getting your windows in and they would

9:18

Jam up what you have to do next is you

9:20

have to position the balancer chute cams

9:25

there's one for the inner window one for

9:30

the outer window on both sides so what

9:32

you need to do is slide that down and

9:34

lock it in place about 12 inches up when

9:38

you put the windows in you'll slide them

9:40

into those cams and turn them up when

9:43

you turn them up they'll unlock and then

9:44

the windows will slide up and down on

9:47

those camps so I'm just going to go

9:49

ahead and put a screwdriver in there

9:51

push it down and lock it in place

9:57

and you'll do that for this other one

10:10

before I install the windows I'm gonna

10:12

go ahead and spray some silicone

10:14

lubricant on the tracks on both sides

10:27

since I have tilt in Windows this

10:30

release mechanism on both sides you want

10:33

to push that all the way up to the top

10:34

of the gym all right now we're ready to

10:38

install the windows we're going to start

10:40

with the outer window first you're gonna

10:43

line up the pins into the outer slot put

10:47

it on a slight angle facing up is the

10:50

outer part of the window

10:52

I'm gonna go ahead and slide that down

10:53

on both sides until it clicks in place

10:57

once it's locked in on both sides I'm

11:00

just gonna slide the window up I hope

11:14

you enjoyed the video please take time

11:17

to like and subscribe to my channel

thank you
