parades patriotic songs and a deep sense
of national pride but have you ever
wondered why was January 26th chosen to
be Republic Day the answer lies in
India's struggle for freedom and the
aspirations of its people
before we understand why January 26th
was chosen let's take a quick look at
India's struggle for Independence for
nearly 2 years India was under British
rule the Indian people longed for
freedom and self-governance leaders like
Mahatma Gandhi jawahar ALU and Sardar
Patel led the fight through nonviolent
resistance and Civil Disobedience but
did you know before India achieved
independence in 1947 a crucial moment in
our freedom struggle took place on
January 26 1930 a day that would later
become a Cornerstone of our Republic the
year was
1929 the Indian National Congress held
its annual session in laor under the
presidency of Pandit jawah Halal Neu in
this historic session a major decision
was made the demand for complete
Independence or Puna swaraj on December
31st 1929 the tricolor flag of India was
hoisted on the banks of the Ravi River
in lore and it was declared that January
26th 1930 would be observed as
Independence Day across the country on
this day thousands of Indians took a
pledge to fight for complete
independence from British rule across
the country people celebrated by
hoisting the flag and taking vows of
patriotism and self-rule this marked the
first official Declaration of India's
intent to become a free and Sovereign
Nation years before actual Independence
was
achieved fast forward to August 15th
1947 the day India finally achieved
independence from British rule but
Independence came with challenges while
India was free it still did not have a
permanent Constitution the country was
functioning under the government of
India Act of 1935 a British made law our
leaders knew that a new constitution was
needed to shape the future of
Independent India and so on August 29th
1947 the constituent assembly of India
appointed Dr BR r edar as the chairman
of the drafting committee to prepare the
constitution of India for almost 3 years
intense discussions debates and
revisions took place to create a
constitution that would define India as
a sovereign socialist secular and
Democratic Republic finally on November
26th 1949 the constitution of India was
adopted by the constituent assembly but
why wasn't November 26 declared Republic
Day the leaders wanted a date that held
historical significance and that's where
January 26th came in to honor the memory
of the Perna sware Declaration of 1930
the Indian government decided to
officially enforce the constitution of
India on January 26th 1950 this is how
January 26 was chosen to become Republic
Day on this day India officially became
a sovereign Republic with Dr rajendra
Prasad as the first President of India
replacing the British monarch as the
head of state since then every year we
celebrate Republic Day with a grand
parade in New Delhi showcasing India's
Rich culture military strength and unity
in diversity Republic Day is not just a
celebration it is a reminder of our
journey from a colony to a Democratic
Republic it represents the values of
Justice Liberty equality and fraternity
the core principles enshrined in our
constitution it is a day to reflect on
our duties as CI izens and to honor the
sacrifices of those who made our
democracy possible as we celebrate
