What's the funniest game that turns serious fast?
FULL TRANSCRIPT
What's the funniest game that turns
serious fast? My roommates and I
invented this stupid game called Phone
Roulette during finals week. Everyone
puts their unlocked phone in the middle
of the table. We spin a bottle and
whoever it lands on gets to scroll
through someone else's phone for 30
seconds and share the weirdest thing
they find started as harmless fun.
Jake's Spotify playlist called Sad Boy
Hours with 847 songs of pure emotional
damage. Sarah's 47 screenshots of the
same outfit from different angles
because she couldn't decide if it made
her look fat. My calculator history
showing I tried to tip 200% at Denny's
at 3:00 a.m. because math is hard when
you're drunk. We'd been playing for
weeks. Found Mike's dating app where he
listed his height as 6'2 when he's
clearly 5'9. Discovered Sarah's notes
app had a detailed ranking of every guy
in our dorm from would date to would
rather die alone. Jake's search history
was just how to tell if your roommate
likes you searched 67 times. But last
Friday felt different. My girlfriend
Emma had been weird all week. Always
texting, always smiling at her screen
like she was reading the funniest memes
in existence. Always flipping her phone
face down the second I walked into a
room. When I'd ask who she was talking
to, she'd get this guilty look and
mumble something about just friends. The
bottle landed on my best friend Mike. He
grabbed Emma's phone with this evil grin
like he was about to expose her terrible
taste in Tik Toks. 10 seconds in, his
face went white. Uh, guys, he showed us
the screen, a text thread with some guy
named Tyler. The last message made my
stomach drop. Can't wait to see you
tomorrow. David will never find out.
Emma went silent. Then she started
crying. I can explain. Mike kept
scrolling, his expression getting worse.
There's more. A travel confirmation for
a weekend trip to some fancy resort.
Hotel reservations under both their
names. Months and months of messages
talking about our secret and when we're
finally together. The room went dead
quiet except for Emma's sniffling. Sarah
slowly reached for her wine like she
needed liquid courage for whatever was
about to happen. That's when Sarah
grabbed her own phone back and said,
"Since we're ruining everything tonight,
I've been failing three classes and
haven't told my parents. They think I'm
getting straight A's." Jake stood up,
ran his hands through his hair, and
blurted out, "I'm dropping out next
semester to move in with my boyfriend.
Yeah, I'm gay. Surprise." Mike looked
around at all of us losing our minds and
said, "I've been stealing food from the
dining hall for months. Those fancy
meals I've been making, all stolen."
Emma looked at all of us, confessing our
deepest secrets. and whispered through
her tears, "Tyler's my brother. He's
surprising you for your birthday
tomorrow." We all just stared at her.
The hotel, it's for your surprise party.
The secret messages. He's been planning
this with all your friends from back
home for 2 months. I was helping
coordinate everything. Your parents are
flying in, your high school friends,
even your ex-girlfriend who you're still
friends with. Tyler booked the hotel
conference room because it was the only
place big enough for everyone. The
silence was deafening. I've been acting
weird because I'm terrible at keeping
secrets and I almost ruined it like 15
times. Every text was me panicking about
RSVPs and decorations and whether we
ordered enough cake. Mike slowly handed
her phone back. So, you're not cheating
on him with my brother? Gross. No, I'm
planning the most elaborate surprise
party in human history, and apparently
I'm the worst secret keeper alive. Jake
sat back down. So, I just came out for
nothing. I mean, we're proud of you,
Sarah said. But also, yeah, kind of.
That's when we realized we'd all just
trauma dumped our biggest secrets
because we thought Emma was cheating.
The next day, I walked into what I
thought was going to be a normal dinner
with Emma and found 30 people screaming,
"Surprise!" including my parents, my
childhood friends, and Tyler, who looks
exactly like Emma, but with a beard.
Best birthday ever. Worst game of phone
roulette ever. We retired the game after
that. Some secrets are meant to stay
secret. Others are just surprise parties
in disguise. Everyone agreed. Next time
we're bored, we're playing Uno. Worst
you can get there is skip.
