holidays are a great way to see new

0:13

places

0:16

but while some people want to go

0:18

sightseeing

0:22

or relax on the beach

0:26

others prefer exciting adventure

0:28

holidays

0:30

[Music]

0:33

they hike through mountains

0:36

go trekking across the desert

0:39

or ride boats through dangerous waters

0:44

sarah darby is one of these people

0:46

[Music]

0:48

sarah is from oxford in the united

0:51

kingdom

0:53

she took three months holiday from work

0:56

and went on a cycling trip in south

0:58

america

1:01

i journeyed to patagonia and starting

1:04

off in ishwara which is the southernmost

1:06

city in on earth i flew my bicycle out

1:10

from britain to

1:12

to ushuaia

1:14

and i wanted to cycle the karatera

1:17

austral

1:19

the karatera austral

1:21

is a

1:22

1240 kilometer long

1:24

highway it runs through patagonia and

1:27

chile

1:30

and goes through some of the most remote

1:32

areas in the world

1:35

so why did sarah decide to go

1:38

there i decided to go to patagonia

1:41

because it was a an opportunity to go to

1:44

a different continent um and i just

1:47

thought well you know patagonia is a

1:49

dream place to go to if you like remote

1:52

and wild places

1:56

one of sarah's favorite things about the

1:58

journey

1:59

was the scenery

2:00

[Music]

2:04

the landscape was amazing

2:08

and the colors changed all the time

2:11

from red to orange

2:14

yellow green

2:16

and even grey

2:18

but that wasn't the only thing she liked

2:20

about the journey the other thing that

2:22

amazed me about the place was the people

2:26

they're really really generous and you

2:28

know they often buy you coffee or a bowl

2:30

of chips or even lunch you know

2:32

after a whole day of cycling they kind

2:35

of want to help you out and

2:37

yeah the people are amazing

2:40

but cycling through this beautiful but

2:42

empty landscape wasn't easy

2:45

i read a lot of horror stories before i

2:47

went about the the karate austral it's a

2:50

very lonely empty road there's hardly

2:52

any traffic on it

2:55

the road was in a very bad condition

2:57

and she fell off her bike a lot of times

3:01

she sometimes had to push the bike which

3:04

wasn't easy

3:07

the whole bike weighed 46 kilograms

3:09

so it's heavy

3:11

and i'm not i'm you know for quite a fit

3:13

strong person i think but it was yeah it

3:15

was difficult

3:18

sarah wanted to cycle the entire highway

3:22

but she only had three months

3:25

and she wanted to see a lot of places

3:28

[Music]

3:29

so what other kind of transport did she

3:31

use

3:33

chile's very very long country and i

3:35

really wanted to get to the very

3:37

northern tip and see the atacama desert

3:39

as well so

3:41

after cycling

3:43

i left my bike in san diego and i used

3:46

overnight buses

3:48

i did use pickup trucks when when i

3:50

needed to

3:52

i also used boats

3:54

and i took a flight

3:56

to easter island

3:58

as the very last thing

4:04

sarah traveled from the southern tip of

4:06

patagonia to the atacama desert in

4:08

northern chile

4:14

it was an incredible journey

4:16

with lots of amazing things to do and

4:18

see
