Meet Kevin's First Flight | Pilot Debrief - Cirrus SR-20 Parachute Plane
FULL TRANSCRIPT
hey everyone me Kevin here this is so
exciting I got invited out to fly on a
cirrus this is one of those planes with
a parachute it's an
SR20 and this is going to be my first
time in a serus this is only my second
time ever in a small plane uh the first
time I ever did it I was freaking out
super nervous and I'll tell you it's
just it's transparent okay just just
between you and me here
when I read the FAA pilot handbook I
made it all the way to about page 40 or
so and it had all these um you know
people who shouldn't be a pilot things
and and then it made me throw the book
away and say that's it this is not for
me I'm never going to fly I'm just the
wrong person you know I maybe I'm too
spontaneous or as some might say
careless uh you know uh don't like
directions or rules or whatever and then
I realized you
know that was more of a me problem than
than an aviation problem and being a
data 7 I think it's
important to be able to fix things that
you suck at and acknowledge that you
suck at something and then really work
on fixing it and then maybe going the
extra mile to make sure you're actually
perfecting what you suck at uh to sort
of overcompensate for your oopsies but
anyway um here I am this is the start of
that and uh so uh shout out to all-in
Aviation here Lone Mountain aircraft
sales as well and of course Cirrus this
is really exciting but we are going to
go up mck is going to hang out with us
you you ready McKay oh yeah let's do it
he's still in the I'm afraid of
turbulence phas but I'm really excited
because uh we're going to be sitting in
this and uh take a look at what the
inside looks like and I'll show you the
plane a little bit and let's this puppy
out there I don't even know how to mount
GoPros on this stuff but I got a couple
fuction cups and we stuck them in so
we'll see how it goes you're about to
see me fly but before I begin I have to
give an unsolicited shout out to the
pilot debrief if it weren't for their
Channel giving me the confidence that if
I train I listen I learn I follow the
rules the law and checklists I Would by
no means be putting myself into to the
cockpit so thank you to the pilot D
brief on YouTube seriously unsolicited
shout out here but if it weren't for you
I would not be doing this so thank you
hey everybody who are you and where are
you from all right so my name is Chris
way he live here in Las Vegas work for
all in aviation I'm doing a second
career I'm a certified play instructor
so we're going to get Kevin flying here
let's go do it that's awesome thank you
and what is this in front of us okay so
this thing right there this is the
parachute that gets deployed should we
need to uh come down safely have some
kind of engine failure any problem
that's going to bring it safety to the
ground it's bigger it's almost as big as
the hanger the entire plane floats down
right it's not like we wear parachutes
on our back the parachute brings the
whole plane down wow that is a
huge wow absolutely amazing and that
must be the pre-shoot right there that
is so cool that all that compresses into
that look at this this is so cool and I
guess this gets like rocket propelled
out that's it parachute repack packed
into that Holy Smokes that's really cool
and I have to say I've never seen a gas
truck this size this is what call Bowser
a little Bowser right so if we need to
you know fuel them up full we will bring
the fuel truck around from the airport
but this way we just have you know 50
gallons where we can you know top it off
essentially so what are we about to do
so we're about to do I believe this is
called the pre-flight
checklist checklists are very important
in aviation honestly you can apply
checklist to your life too just did I do
everything in the morning did I get my
car checked out for the day did I clean
it at night I pick up my clothing and I
I find having little checklists just
throughout life really useful so
Aviation really teaches that right did
Pro pizza now left fuselage right so
we're going left ins side check the
circuit breakers make sure those all
good so now we're on antenna and Wing
fuselodge fairing exactly so here this
is the fuse lash this is the wing this
is the the fairing between the two so's
looking for any cracks and separation
that kind of stuff scuffs are okay okay
so we're just checking for the fuselage
forward and then got the epage backwards
you saw this a little earlier this is
where the parachutes packed okay so it's
in that little black bag that you saw
earlier inside the plane what happens is
a rocket motor fires it pierces the skin
of the airplane shoots the parachute out
like a like a big loud firecracker pop
essentially and then there's kind of rip
cords if you will that go up to the nose
of the plane and towards down this
direction and then the whole plane
floats W down that so yeah there's no
latch here it just blows it out yeah it
goes right through the skin so it's
little right there make sure there no
cracks okay so now we're checking for a
couple things here there's a
counterweight that needs to be here see
this little see this little paint that's
on these bolts here oh yeah like on
roller coasters yeah
yeah yeah um but yeah so you can tell if
they've been turned right if the paint
doesn't align then we know they've
worked themselves loose loose I see okay
they pins so right here this is the main
tank and we're going to drain it up
pretty much to fill this cup so that 100
low lead should be bluish color ah okay
so jet fuel is going to be a different
color jet fuel like kosene is going to
be like a straw or clear color oh
interesting so if you have a jet and
it's blue don't fly exactly or if you
have this one and it's clear
okay yeah usually it smell the kerosene
right it smells like uh it's diesel
essentially right see a little orange
Square yeah that will turn like a
brownish yeah yeah so in this plane it's
more common CU people tend to ride the
brakes while we're taxing around so it's
you hear me say don't ride the brakes
okay and since the wheel pants they can
build up heat in extreme cases and cause
fire cool you guys ready what's your uh
oh so our elevation right now is 25 4 60
correct okay all right good we're
stabilized there okay so let's go ahead
and uh check the rest of those what's
your minimum Deploy on the
parachute um as far as altitude yeah 600
ft above the ground so I need to be
three plus yeah exactly so 3100 ft is
what we say
Okay oil pressure you meent we already
checked that oil is temperature yep
breakes are working all right so you're
can you're steering so bottom the pedal
with your foot so push left with your
left foot on the brake yep cuz of the
differential brakes exactly and now I'm
going to get ready to go right and as
you go faster you can do it just with
the rudder with it not without the
brakes oh oh oh right I could just use
my Rudder right now probably huh yeah
you need enough air flow over it for it
to work so if you finally like pushing
it or not turning then you have to come
up and tap the brake okay and that's
what you just did exactly okay do you
want to do it or you want me to do it I
want you to I just didn't want to run to
the curb no thank you yeah yeah I
appreciate that okay I'm going to hit
break here a little just to turn or
should I be ruding at this point uh yeah
just I want you get a feel for it yeah
that's so I will I'll keep you I'll
intervene if we're in any danger but
otherwise I'm going to let you kind of
figure it out turn we do taxi wavs
Runway 32 kilo I'm not talking to the
pits he's about your 1:00 and a mile at
4700 ft indicated appears he's turning
toward little nice citation wow
[Music]
basically want to verify the correct
oneway 35 left
checks your controls all right my
controls if you want to keep your hand
on to feel what I'm doing you're more
than welcome all right so put my heels
on the floor going to 1 1,002 2 1,000 3
1,000 full power take look at my engine
gauges here make sure everything's in
the green looking good rway make sure
your air speeds alive it's going up feel
a good
acceleration
77 is the takeoff yeah let's see
actually just about 72 here at our
weight so we're rotate now just kind of
gentle back pressure we come off the
ground all right now this map here is
going to tell tell us what terrains
higher than us so we're going to kind of
go up this Little Valley and we'll climb
up here about 96 knots or so sorry for
the turbulence oh good it's Vegas yeah
you guys get a lot of that out here it's
usually not bad this time of year okay
all right you want to play yeah all
right your controls okay my controls
okay so we're just going to kind of keep
this heading you see the lowest part of
that mountain over there what heading uh
168 so we're going to go about 150 but
just don't focus on this just focus on
the eyes outside okay we're going to
pitch back a little bit to climb a
little faster and you want me to pull
back or you doing that no you can do it
you're fine I'm going to pull back a
little just gentle it's like it's like
pressure soft yeah very good all right
keep your hand on the
power I've got uh 800 900 verticals good
before we keep going I just want to say
thank you for bearing with me over the
past few years it's been a lot of
adapting and really growing more
importantly growing as a person an
entrepreneur and really as somebody that
recognizes where they aren't the best
they can be or where they're making
mistakes and then we change and so thank
you for being on that Journey with me
I'm really happy to be able to take this
flight here and I can't wait to show you
the flight this is a magical feeling uh
I do want to just shout out Paul's
Training Center over Al of the Henderson
Airport this is a beautiful facility
beautiful flight simulator beautiful
educational classrooms and they're
remodeling it already looks remodeled
and and they're remodeling more shout
out to all-in Aviation Allin Aviation
and Henderson for hooking up this flight
seriously thank you uh and Lone Mountain
aircraft sales team y'all help me buy my
Phenom
300E one day
maybe I could sit in one of those side
seat oh now I'm down to 500 veral
speed you want to be about your air
speed what you want to focus on so 100
knots is fine
here so just like a boat you know as you
go over the water and waves that's we're
going through a fluid so that's why
we're bouncing around a little bit it
should smooth out pretty good for us
what do I want my vertical rate to climb
to be no I was focus on air speed and to
the vertical rate so where this Y is 96
knot so could be the best climb rate
okay and you want me to stay at about 96
yeah so if I'm over I can pull back a
little yeah and you again you're fine
you don't at this stage you're close
enough anytime we talk about numbers
like percentages we're like it's is
right so like 96 is this is awesome okay
we're at 4500 now so we're going to
level up for a second down forward y
pull the power back just a wee bit power
back about A4 inch yeah good perfect
we're just going to apply we don't want
to go higher than 4600 until we can get
into the airace so I'm going to nose
down just Aidy it's very sensitive yeah
and if you feel like you're having to
push your hand forward and hold it there
then that's when you use that trim so I
hear my controls for a second yeah your
control okay so if I let go and the
planes want to turn to the
right I will give it a left trim and
then I'll let go and then see now it's F
straight we're still climbing a little
bit so I'm going to push it forward a
little bit and if I have to hold it
forward to push one or two clicks to
trim nose down and okay so you okay
click one or two forward got it okay so
now we're about -200 that's perfect now
one maybe one click
back I can really control it with trim
now yeah you almost fly it with your
thumb okay but you really need to fly it
and then use the trim to relieve the
pressure so let's kind of go kind of
over that way just a little bit where
the lowest part of the mountain is they
kind of like biasing up a little but I
want to stay at that 55 yeah I got you
with all these rocks man yeah it makes
people nervous but we got the parachute
got an experienced pilot next to you so
you're good thank you that is very cool
so that's the Huber Dam that's hu Dam
that's it why why do I feel like it's
supposed to be bigger I think when
you're closer to it not uh few thousand
feet above it we're about 4,000 ft above
the ground right now that's a good
point okay uh and you do you want me to
bank more yeah so just kind of like um
yeah do sort of the Steep turn like you
did around it so going to pass it and
then just turn around it so when you
turning you should your wing should be
kind of pointing at it okay here we go
there you go yeah cool just like that
wow so it's kind of keep it where you
can see it right in front of your wing
if it starts to go behind your wing
turns deeper
ah nice okay 200 I'm going to pull back
in yeah
good oh that is amazing so you're just
allowed to float around here yeah I
guess I figure the dam is robust enough
a little plane like this would barely
cause a scratch of the D so keep turning
I'm assuming oh we're going to be going
into the sun
eh do have a visor if you need it and
got your shades on so you already got
your pilot glasses too that's
good it should still be information golf
climbing again so I'm going to trim down
one now we're clear of
traffic uh triming up
my max speed in this uh
yep nowhere near it got it okay
good down
[Music]
[Music]
well McKay how was uh me Kevin flying
did we survived Kevin flights let's go
let's go well I have to say that was
absolutely incredible that is a
different feeling holy
smokes amazing that that just changes
your perspective of everything including
checklists but also just the world and
life that is amazing and it's got a
parachute okay Chris how was
it I don't know I think you might be a
natural pilot oh stop you said you have
never done anything before but yeah you
were flying perfect really nice thank
you yeah absolutely well it's because of
your training well thank you very much
so you ready to get going heck yeah full
board this is so cool thank you
um right to the plane plane to
plane
awesome what a cool world we live
[Music]
in dude those parachute planes are sick
that what in one of those parachute
planes oh you did dude have you ever
seen someone deploy it
twice gness book Thank you pleasure all
right what's your review what's your
verdict M how do you feel I want to hear
everything so cool
feelings little nervous at first nervous
at first okay and then I was like you
know what I'm going to die I'm going to
die with Kevin I'm not going to let him
die alone so we sent it had a great
instructor with us and I'm excited to
see what the future hold future pilot
