gave me $1,000 to start my business.

0:02

That was the lucky break. When he said,

0:04

"You'll never succeed without me." I

0:07

knew I'd rather die than not succeed.

0:09

Thank God he said that. He was wrong. I

0:12

sold my business for $66 million about

0:15

20 years later, and he was out of

0:16

business in 3 years. Today, our guest is

0:19

the one and the only Barbara Corkran.

0:22

She is one of the original sharks on

0:25

Shark Tank. She's a real estate mogul,

0:27

one of the most influential, self-made

0:29

women in business. She's going to look

0:31

you straight in the eye and call you out

0:33

on every single excuse that you've been

0:37

hiding behind. And if you've been

0:38

telling yourself you're too old and it's

0:39

too late, you better buckle up because

0:42

she's got some things to say to you.

0:43

When I was building my business, the

0:45

Corkran Group in New York City, you have

0:47

to appreciate that all the businesses

0:48

are owned by men. None of the big boys

0:50

watched me and I creeped up on them, bit

0:53

their from behind. They never knew what

0:55

was coming. How did you become a judge

0:57

on Shark Tank?

0:58

>> Well, I was hired and then fired before

1:00

I had a chance.

1:01

>> Wait, what do you mean? Why did they

1:02

fire you? Well, they fired me because

1:04

they I actually had a very happy

1:06

childhood. I was very poor, but I was

1:08

happy. My mother had 10 kids. It was

1:11

crowded and it was competitive. I was

1:13

always competing for my mother's

1:14

attention, so I got good at talking.

1:16

That's a gift I got out of being

1:17

dyslexia. Oh, I think dyslexia made me

1:20

successful. I don't think I would have

1:21

been successful without it. You can

1:23

create exactly what you want, but I

1:25

think the key there really is moving on

1:27

something, anything. Just get yourself

1:29

moving and then the idea becomes itself.

1:32

Barbara Corkran, welcome to the Mel

1:34

Robbins podcast.

1:35

>> Thank you very much. I have been looking

1:38

forward to this because I have met you

1:41

in passing a number of times. I admire

1:44

you so much. I'm a fan of Shark Tank.

1:46

I've heard your keynote address. It's

1:49

extraordinary. How might my life be

1:52

different if I take everything to heart

1:54

that you're about to share with us and

1:56

teach us today and I apply it to my own

1:58

life or my business? I would love people

2:00

to appreciate and believe that you're

2:03

far more capable than you think you are.

2:05

I've never met a person who wasn't more

2:07

capable than they gave themselves credit

2:08

for. And I'd like people to really

2:11

understand that you don't have to do it

2:13

the way everybody else does. It's not

2:15

the way that you're going to do it.

2:16

You're free to do it exactly as you

2:18

please. I know that so many people are

2:21

going to listen to this and they're

2:23

going to share it particularly with the

2:25

women in their lives that are doubting

2:27

themselves that don't think they're

2:28

capable. So could you speak directly to

2:31

the person who maybe received this from

2:33

a friend or a sister

2:35

>> and they're feeling full of doubt.

2:37

They've lost some confidence. They're

2:39

feeling a little stuck. What do you want

2:40

to say to that? Well, I think everyone

2:42

feels stuck. I'm probably feeling stuck

2:44

four or five times a month. Really? It's

2:47

not important whether you feel stuck or

2:48

not. just assume it's a human condition.

2:50

We all feel that way. But I think you

2:53

can do a lot to change yourself to being

2:55

unstuck. And one of the best ways to do

2:57

it, or at least I started with it, is to

3:00

change tape in your head. I had a tape

3:02

in my head like intimidation all the way

3:04

until I decided to change it from

3:07

Barbara, you're overstating. Barbara,

3:09

you can't get there. Barbara, you can't

3:10

can can't can't. And replace it with

3:13

Barbara, you're incredible. Now, did I

3:16

believe it? No. But I made the habit of

3:18

changing every time my mind went down

3:21

that hole. I changed it to Barbara,

3:23

you're incredible. And eventually I

3:24

started believing it. We all have lousy

3:26

tapes in our head left over from

3:28

childhood. Man, I have a little I think

3:29

the the woman that gave me the worst

3:31

tape in my head was Sister Stella Marie

3:33

the nun from hell in third grade who

3:35

said, "You're always going to be stupid

3:37

because you can't read." It took me

3:38

probably eight years to get over that.

3:40

And I said, "I'm not going to be

3:42

stupid." And that's I decided not to be.

3:44

I mean, it's a shame that how dare

3:46

someone make you feel less than you are.

3:48

You've got to come back strong. Well,

3:50

and oftenimes, Barbara, and I think you

3:52

know this, too, because you just talked

3:54

a little bit about how you were like,

3:55

"Barbara, you're doing this. Barbara,

3:56

you're doing that." And you started

3:58

saying, "Barbara, you're incredible."

3:59

And then the more you repeated it, you

4:00

started to believe it. But often times,

4:03

the person that's beating us down the

4:04

most is ourselves.

4:06

>> Yes. Very much. So, for the person who's

4:08

listening right now who feels like,

4:09

"Okay, Mel, Barbara, I love both you

4:14

ladies, but it's too late for me. I have

4:16

screwed up too many times. I have not

4:20

gotten myself together. It's too late.

4:22

I'm too old." What do you want to say to

4:24

that person?

4:24

>> I'm It's never too late. Obviously, you

4:27

know that. I know that. But I think you

4:29

just have to pause and realize I have

4:31

always done a simple exercise. I've

4:34

counted the years I have left and think

4:36

of how many more mis can I get in those

4:38

years. So when I was 46 and sold my

4:40

business, I thought I sold the golden

4:42

goose and I thought I would never ever

4:44

create another business again like that.

4:46

I thought I had sold my best business.

4:48

Not that I didn't want to. I wanted to.

4:51

But then I realized I was the golden

4:53

goose. You can create exactly what you

4:55

want. I mean I laid eggs again and again

4:57

and I reinvented myself over and over

4:59

again. But I think the key there really

5:01

is to believe that you really have to

5:03

get good at trying. Because the minute

5:06

you try, an opportunity is right there

5:07

and you go, "Whoa, I didn't think of

5:09

that." But it's when you're in that

5:10

still position, or at least for me, when

5:12

I'm in a still position, I could sit at

5:14

my desk and try to invent an idea,

5:16

forget it. It's about moving on

5:18

something, anything. Just get yourself

5:19

moving and then the idea becomes itself.

5:22

And by the way, about failing at stuff,

5:25

which I find just stops a lot of people.

5:27

they feel they've had two or three

5:29

failures and oh, I'm not going to do it.

5:32

I just don't believe in that. I think

5:34

they just didn't hang around long enough

5:36

to see the flip side of failure because

5:38

all my good stuff happened after a big

5:40

failure. It almost seemed like for me,

5:42

the bigger the failure I had, the bigger

5:44

the upside, but I was

5:46

>> dogged enough to just stay there and see

5:48

there's got to be something here.

5:49

There's got to be something. And I think

5:51

just waiting around for the something to

5:53

find it and believing there's something

5:55

there. I don't think you're ever wrong.

5:57

I think there's always something there

5:59

and you can get something started again.

6:01

You said something that really caught my

6:02

attention, which is you do this thing

6:05

where you count the years you have left.

6:07

>> Yes, I do.

6:08

>> So, do you have a number in mind for how

6:10

long you're going to live?

6:11

>> Yeah, about 105. Okay. 105. So, let's

6:14

just take that away as something you can

6:16

grab from Barbara. You're going to live

6:18

to 105. You've got that many years left

6:22

and I love what you That's a How many

6:25

Mis can I pack into?

6:27

>> Probably about another two. But they've

6:29

got to be different. They've got to suit

6:30

who I am at that juncture in my life.

6:32

>> Oh, I love that.

6:33

>> I could never build another real estate

6:35

business with the energy it took, the

6:36

people I had to hire, the financial

6:38

stress I went through. I'm older now. I

6:40

just can't handle that. It's got to be

6:41

appropriate to who you are and true to

6:43

yourself at that point in time because

6:45

your experience changes you. You're
