0:00

you

0:08

I grew up in a family of educators I

0:11

spent so much of my childhood in my

0:14

mother's kindergarten classroom and I

0:17

wanted to be a teacher just like her

0:20

I've been an educator for over 20 years

0:22

and after several years in the classroom

0:26

I set my sights on wanting to be a coach

0:29

I envisioned myself leading professional

0:33

development trainings and supporting

0:36

teachers in the classroom and I believe

0:39

that I could be really good at that so I

0:42

applied for a promotion

0:46

unfortunately my supervisor at the time

0:49

did not share that same vision and I

0:54

watched my application get thrown into

0:57

the trashcan and I was told that I would

1:03

never be a coach I just didn't have what

1:07

it took and I walked out of that office

1:13

that day devastated yet a green and

1:18

saying you're right I don't know how to

1:22

be a coach what was I thinking it's

1:28

surprising how easily our confidence can

1:32

be broken isn't it how truly fragile it

1:37

is but you know what after some time

1:42

those words held less and less power

1:46

over me as I started to remember instead

1:49

my mother telling me for years that I

1:52

had a unique ability to connect with

1:54

learner's and I remembered all my

1:56

parents who went out of their way to

1:58

tell me what a difference I was making

2:01

in the lives of their children and I

2:05

decided that maybe I don't know how to

2:07

be a coach yet but I do know how to

2:11

teach and I can transfer those skills

2:14

and that's when I realized I had the

2:19

resiliency to pick

2:21

self up and persevere toward my goal

2:24

because I genuinely believed I could do

2:28

it I knew I could be a successful coach

2:32

so with that I applied for a different

2:34

job and the rest is history

2:36

I have been an educator coach for five

2:40

and a half years and I am so privileged

2:42

to even coach other coaches of teachers

2:45

around the nation and even some

2:48

internationally so how about you what I

2:53

bet you could all think of that moment

2:55

in your lives when your belief in your

2:58

ability to do something outweighed what

3:01

anyone else told you you could or could

3:04

not do that's because our genuine belief

3:10

in our abilities plays a key role in how

3:14

we approach certain goals tasks and

3:18

challenges this essential belief in our

3:24

ability to succeed in specific endeavors

3:28

is called self-efficacy

3:34

people with low levels of self-efficacy

3:37

for a certain task tend to avoid doing

3:40

it all together no no no or if they do

3:44

try they usually give up fairly quickly

3:47

because they do not believe that they

3:50

will ultimately be successful whereas

3:54

higher levels of self-efficacy

3:56

influences our motivation to give it a

4:00

try and take that action and even to

4:05

persevere when challenges are

4:07

encountered that is the power of

4:16

self-efficacy it is the fuel that drives

4:21

change and that's why it matters to all

4:26

of us

4:27

no matter our age or profession so how

4:32

do we get more of this how do we build

4:35

self-efficacy that is how do we empower

4:38

ourselves and others to believe in our

4:42

ability to do a certain thing so we can

4:45

lean in begin taking that action and

4:49

make change happen in our lives Albert

4:54

bandura the psychologist who developed

4:57

the theory identified four sources of

5:00

efficacy beliefs the first and foremost

5:04

source is experiencing success we all

5:09

know that success builds upon success

5:12

and nothing creates more self-efficacy

5:16

than having a direct experience of

5:18

mastery with that task swim instructors

5:22

know this to be true

5:24

when my daughter's first learned how to

5:26

swim their instructors supported them in

5:29

feeling successful as they mastered each

5:33

small step towards swimming

5:36

independently I do the same with my

5:39

teachers when I'm trying to help them

5:41

learn a new instructional strategy or

5:44

teaching behavior I break it down into

5:47

small achievable steps and I even

5:51

individualize the beginning point I

5:53

match the strategy with the teachers

5:56

current skills and we start there so

6:01

that the teachers can feel that

6:03

immediate sense of success with this new

6:05

strategy and also have that feeling of

6:08

ah I'm already doing this a little and

6:10

we build the skill from there in this

6:15

way teachers have a positive experience

6:17

in implementing the new strategy and

6:21

also with the change process itself the

6:26

second source of efficacy is seen others

6:30

like ourselves succeed when I first ran

6:35

a 5k I didn't know if I would ever make

6:39

it to the finish line

6:41

but I was inspired to keep going by

6:44

those around me many of whom were also

6:47

still clearly struggling I wasn't the

6:51

only one but they kept putting one foot

6:54

in front of the other and I decided if

6:57

they could do it I could do it too

6:59

this source is most pronounced when I

7:02

support group coaching when teachers are

7:06

able to see other teachers like

7:09

themselves trying something new in their

7:12

classroom and they're able to hear about

7:14

the positive response they're getting

7:17

from their students they are much more

7:19

likely and willing to try something

7:21

similar themselves in their own

7:23

classrooms having a support group in a

7:27

community like this helps teachers

7:29

believe that their success is also

7:33

possible the third source of

7:38

encouragement is receiving specific

7:40

encouragement now how many of us have

7:44

our efforts affirmed on a daily basis

7:48

up there no no what right we don't even

7:53

do that for ourselves our society treats

8:00

encouragement and affirmation as if it's

8:03

a very expensive commodity and you just

8:07

can't afford to do it too often but

8:11

that's absolutely false it's free and it

8:14

is such a powerful motivator that it

8:18

doesn't even make sense not to tap into

8:20

it regularly

8:21

I believe in there's so much that I

8:24

encourage my coaches that whenever they

8:27

go into a teacher's classroom to leave a

8:29

little sticky note saying something they

8:32

saw or heard the teacher do that had a

8:35

positive impact on the students I wasn't

8:39

sure exactly what effect this had on the

8:42

teachers until several of my coaches

8:45

told me how their teachers excitedly

8:47

showed them where in the classroom they

8:49

kept all of those inspiring notes you

8:53

see when we're trying something new and

8:57

making change in the middle of that

8:59

change process knowing that our

9:03

decisions our efforts our choices are

9:08

being seen and heard and appreciated

9:12

helps us to focus more on the progress

9:15

that we are making toward that goal than

9:19

on the challenges that we are currently

9:22

facing because there's always challenges

9:28

the fourth source of efficacy is

9:31

managing negative emotions when my

9:36

oldest daughter was eight years old she

9:39

was getting ready to take her first

9:41

high-stakes standardized test as you can

9:46

imagine her anxiety was through the roof

9:49

and she was sure that those feelings

9:53

meant she was destined to fail I helped

9:59

her realize that it's totally natural

10:02

and normal to feel the way she was

10:04

feeling but that when we let our

10:07

emotions get this big our brains get

10:12

small and it becomes really difficult to

10:16

think and she needed to find a way to

10:19

manage her emotions so she could keep

10:22

her brain big because she was gonna need

10:24

it we practiced many strategies and I'm

10:29

pleased to say that she did really well

10:30

on that test but much more importantly

10:33

she learned a really valuable lesson

10:35

that she has the power to manage her

10:39

emotions and calm them we all do when I

10:44

work with teachers to create an action

10:46

plan for them to go into their classroom

10:48

and independently practice these new

10:51

strategies were working on and teaching

10:52

behaviors we always talk about what

10:55

could go wrong and then help them to

10:59

develop some ways to overcome those

11:03

barriers so that they can keep

11:06

practicing on their own we also talked

11:08

about those stressful feelings that

11:11

they're likely to feel when they're

11:13

doing new things in front of their

11:14

students in their classrooms in this way

11:18

I helped set my teachers up for success

11:22

so they can keep practicing because

11:26

we're trying to build habits and I need

11:29

them to be able to do that on their own

11:30

when I'm not there so how do all four of

11:35

these steps work together to develop

11:39

self-efficacy years ago when I was

11:47

vacationing in Thailand I somehow let my

11:51

Floridian ocean loving husband talk me

11:55

into going on a beginner scuba diving

11:58

adventure now you need to know I'm from

12:03

New Mexico of born and raised in the

12:04

desert and so the idea of going on this

12:11

and drowning

12:13

or being attacked by a sea creature was

12:17

very real and it scared me to death

12:21

but I overcame my fears that day because

12:24

several very important things happened

12:27

first my amazingly patient instructor

12:32

was totally zen-like broke down the

12:36

terrifying process of all the the

12:39

mandatory safety procedures I had to go

12:42

through into small little chunks so I

12:45

could focus on that chunk and feel

12:48

comfortable and successful and then we

12:50

went to the next one also I was able to

12:55

see others other newbies like myself

12:58

succeeding and not dying and I know many

13:03

of them were just as nervous as I was

13:05

because we talked about it on the boat

13:06

right over and here they were being

13:10

brave and literally taking the plunge

13:13

and they inspired me to want to be brave

13:15

too my husband constantly encouraged me

13:21

and told me that I could do this and

13:25

somehow he kept me from panicking no

13:29

small task because that panic attack was

13:32

this close okay and all of these things

13:36

work together that day to help me to do

13:39

that the unimaginable to breathe

13:43

underwater and survive

13:49

so I asked you what is that thing that

13:54

you've been wanting to try and you

13:58

haven't yet what does that change that

14:01

you've been waiting to make in your life

14:05

what is it going to take for you to

14:08

believe in your ability to successfully

14:12

do that so you can lean in make that

14:17

change start to happen and make a

14:20

positive change in your life

14:23

visionary innovator Henry Ford summed it

14:26

up perfectly when he said whether you

14:29

believe you can or you believe you

14:33

cannot you are right you're right so I

14:40

encourage you today to be kind to

14:43

yourself and build your self-efficacy so

14:46

you can prove to yourself that you can

14:51

thank you

14:52

[Applause]
