welcome to this edition of the first a

0:22

show what we're going to do now is have

0:24

a look at sorts of things that a

0:26

paramedic or a medical professional

0:28

would do when they arrive on the

0:30

and the use of Airways to ensure that

0:33

the person can breathe as best as

0:35

possible while doing resuscitation and

0:37

also postresuscitation care so from a

0:40

first aid and basic life support

0:42

perspective we would open the airway by

0:44

head tilt chin lift but when a medical

0:46

professionals arrive what could they do

0:47

to make the airway even better so they

0:50

would use um a variety of they called

0:52

adjunct to assist with the um holding

0:55

the airway open and the easiest one to

0:57

explain to you it would be the um or

1:00

fair and G Airway which come in various

1:03

sizes depending on the size of the

1:04

patient you need to measure the right

1:06

size for your patient so obviously we

1:08

have three sizes here and the way that

1:11

you would um measure is you go from the

1:13

earlobe to the corner of the mouth and

1:15

literally you would place this to the

1:17

side measure from here to the corner of

1:19

the mouth that we know that fits to

1:21

place it into the patient's mouth you

1:23

need to be able to visualize first so

1:25

there's nothing in the way um and it

1:28

goes in upside down and then you rotate

1:31

it to go make sure that you don't push

1:32

the tongue further back so you would

1:34

actually open up the jaw pop it into the

1:38

mouth until you actually will physically

1:39

feel it stop because you've actually hit

1:41

the hard pallet at that point and then

1:43

you're able to rotate it round and push

1:45

it in and that will then hold the tongue

1:47

in position you still will have to do an

1:49

element of chin lift jaw thrust sorry

1:51

chin lift head tilt um to be able to

1:53

keep that Airway in position but it will

1:56

um provide a bit more support than

1:59

without it

2:01

you can actually use this to suction

2:03

around to um so that you can suction

2:05

down through the hole or around should

2:07

they be producing too much of the um

2:09

normal secretions that we produce on a

2:10

daily basis and swallow so the other

2:13

type of Airway you can use is a nasal

2:15

Airway um and this goes up the nose and

2:18

it sits just above the bit that you

2:19

tickle and are sick so it won't actually

2:22

induce any vomiting so you're going to

2:23

need some form of lubricant for this to

2:25

actually go into the nose so um I have

2:27

some lubricant here so we'll just Lu

2:30

rate this here and it just goes into the

2:33

nostril as I said you're listening for

2:34

the breath so you listen for the breath

2:36

as you hear the breath you know you're

2:38

going in the right direction obviously

2:40

we want to actually head towards the

2:41

lungs and not towards the brain so

2:43

that's why you listen for the breath so

2:44

you listen for the breath hear the

2:46

breath and push slightly rotate just so

2:48

that it will move hear another breath

2:50

and push and the last one hear another

2:53

breath and push and it sits just there

2:56

some of these you will find have a

2:58

safety pin attached the safety pin is

3:00

there so that you don't lose it and it

3:02

doesn't go any further in some also have

3:04

a square flange so that there's no

3:06

chance of losing it um they can be lost

3:09

so that's why you need safety pin and

3:11

just finally just to reiterate these are

3:13

for trained people only um not for a

3:16

standard first aid you would need proper

3:17

training oning these you do need proper

3:19

training you can actually do a lot of

3:21

damage with these instruments if you

3:22

don't know what you're doing

3:28

yes
