0:00

Donald Trump just struck an art of the

0:02

deal deal with Vietnam on trade. Now the

0:06

question is, is this deal actually going

0:08

to lead to a stronger US economy and

0:11

what's going to happen to jobs or

0:13

inflation? But we're going to talk about

0:14

that in this video. But first, some of

0:17

the concepts or frameworks of the deal.

0:19

So this is actually more than a China

0:22

framework. It actually seems to have a

0:24

functional deal. Vietnam to pay 20%

0:27

tariff on any goods it sends to the

0:30

United States. Last year, Vietnam sent

0:32

about $137 billion to the United States,

0:36

and that level has been straight up

0:38

skyrocketing. In fact, Vietnam has the

0:40

third largest trade surplus of any

0:43

country with us. In other words, we have

0:45

a giant trade deficit with them. That's

0:48

because we only import about $13

0:51

billion. Sorry, we only export about $1

0:54

13 billion to Vietnam. So 13 billion

0:56

goes from us to Vietnam. We take about

1:00

$137 billion. So it's about a 10x

1:03

difference for every $10 that we import

1:06

from Vietnam. Vietnam imports about $1.

1:10

Now Vietnam's like, "Ah, we promised to

1:12

import more, including agricultural

1:14

stuff. Who cares? Why are we seeing

1:17

surges from Vietnam imports? Well, part

1:20

of it is frankly because a lot of our

1:22

companies manufacture over there.

1:24

Restoration Hardware, Lululemon, Nike,

1:26

Gap, IKEA, Lego, Intel, Ford, Toyota,

1:29

Apple, Samsung, Adidas, that's the

1:31

German way to say, uh H&M, Under Armour.

1:33

These are a lot of companies that

1:35

manufacture and are relying on on

1:37

Vietnam at least some part in their

1:40

manufacturing process. Now, initially

1:42

when we saw this deal announced that

1:44

there was a deal with details to follow,

1:47

stocks like Nike and Restoration

1:49

Hardware popped on the news, but Donald

1:52

Trump said details to follow. Then the

1:54

details came out and that's when things

1:56

got a little funny. Now, I'm going to

1:57

explain why things got a little funny

1:59

and what this means for jobs and margins

2:01

and all that in just a moment. But what

2:03

I do want to mention is this morning we

2:05

were talking about not only in the

2:07

course live streams but also very early

2:09

this morning we were talking about hood

2:12

when we saw our volume start rising here

2:14

on hood we saw this as a potential

2:17

breakout confirming our 90 in the

2:20

pre-market and the next natural spot is

2:23

100. So we're very very bullish on hood

2:26

right around here. Now, if you want

2:28

analysis like this every morning, even

2:30

before the market opens, make sure

2:32

you're part of the Meet Kevin Alpha

2:33

report, which comes out every morning

2:35

before the market opens and we put it

2:36

together to g together and analyze

2:38

potential trades or historical trends or

2:40

otherwise. This is a little bit more of

2:43

a 50/50 trade right now that we're at

2:45

about 100. But anyway, if you want

2:47

analysis like what we did on Hood over

2:48

here, which played out perfectly,

2:50

especially with this increasing volume,

2:52

very impressive. I mean more volume over

2:53

here than we had during the first 10-15

2:55

minutes which really helped drove this

2:57

of course risk factor now that volume is

2:59

declining. Make sure you join that meet

3:01

Kevin alpha report. You get all all the

3:03

courses all the course live streams the

3:04

alpha report every day the market is

3:06

open the new lectures coming out

3:08

especially the ones on Trumpomics. So

3:10

stay tuned for that because that'll be

3:11

all about the big beautiful bill. Stay

3:13

tuned. So that said, uh we now have to

3:16

understand what does this mean for

3:18

margins? Because here's the thing.

3:20

Liberation day, we went to 46% tariff on

3:24

Vietnamese products. Then we went to a

3:27

10% tariff. So which is still higher

3:30

than what it was before. We were closer

3:32

to a trade weighted average of maybe 3%

3:34

tariffs on Vietnam. That went to 10%

3:37

after Liberation Day's pause. problem is

3:40

now it's slightly more than 20% because

3:43

we're going to have a 40% tariff on

3:44

trans shipping which is Chinese products

3:46

going through Vietnam to the United

3:48

States. Probably one of the reasons we

3:50

saw uh you know Vietnamese trade explode

3:53

and that trade deficit with Vietnam

3:55

explode is because of trans shipping and

3:58

just more manufacturing going to Vietnam

4:00

over China because of the 2018 trade war

4:03

making Vietnam a more desirable place to

4:05

manufacture. That said, you have to

4:08

remember how this actually functionally

4:11

works for companies. Okay? So,

4:13

understand this for a moment. When Nike

4:16

sells you a $150 shoe,

4:20

about I'm going to say

4:23

COGS probably 25%. Let's go with 25% on

4:27

COGS. 37.5

4:30

is probably the cost that uh applies to

4:35

Vietnam.

4:36

So tariff at 20% is really on 3750

4:42

not not 150. Very important to remember

4:46

that right now

4:50

that

4:52

works out to about a $7.50 tariff

4:57

uh on the total product. That's not a

5:00

big deal. That works out to 750 divided

5:04

by 150 which is

5:08

7.5 divide by 1.5 5%.

5:13

Oh, I look up and it already did my math

5:15

for me. Apple AI. That's funny. I was

5:19

not expecting that. Anyway, 5%. Uh, so

5:23

could

5:25

could Nike shoes go up in price 5%.

5:30

probably not. Now, why would they not go

5:32

up? Because revenues are collapsing

5:36

uh about 12 to 26%

5:41

at Nike. Uh online uh closer to mid20s

5:46

collapse. Converse down mid20s

5:50

total revenues down well over 10%. What

5:55

does this signal? They don't have

5:57

pricing power. They have small pee pee.

6:00

Okay, nobody wants small pee pee. And so

6:03

when you have small pee pee and you

6:05

you're limited on your pricing power,

6:08

the last thing you do is raise prices.

6:11

Instead, you try to innovate your shoe

6:16

with designs or whatever or uh increase

6:20

advertising, right? And this is exactly

6:22

what Nike is doing. They're trying to

6:25

innovate and increase advertising

6:26

because they can't raise prices. The

6:29

problem is

6:31

if that doesn't work, where does the

6:33

pain show up? Not in CPI, which is

6:38

consumer price uh index inflation in uh

6:42

it. Yes, it shows up in PPI, which is

6:46

producer price uh you know index

6:49

inflation. Uh, but the Fed doesn't

6:53

really care about PPI. They care about

6:57

consumer prices.

6:59

If consumer prices don't go up, where

7:02

does the 5% pain go?

7:07

Jobs, just like the ADP problem that we

7:10

had this morning. Again, this is very

7:13

slow though. very slow, very lagging,

7:17

uh, and very damaging when it shows up.

7:21

Until it shows up, the party can keep

7:23

going on. So, in the short term, uh, a

7:28

short term, having a trade deal is

7:30

great. It also sets the stage for other

7:34

deals. Unfortunately,

7:37

uh, so I'll just say sadly, it sets the

7:40

bar high, right? It basically says we

7:42

want bigly tariffs. Like Donald Trump

7:46

wants revenue. He want he's addicted to

7:49

this tariff revenue. That's bad for jobs

7:53

long term. So good for markets

7:57

short to medium-term,

8:00

you know, which would be like 3 six

8:02

months, right? 36 mo uh longer term uh

8:07

could reduce growth

8:10

and jobs.

8:12

That's my take on this Vietnamese trade

8:15

deal. Again, nice to have, but also

8:18

somewhat problematic. Hey, look at that.

8:21

What a surprise. I said higher risk to

8:23

keep playing this at 100, especially

8:25

with volume falling. And look at it

8:27

happen. And it's happening live. It's

8:29

not like we're doing some replay here.

8:31

This is the same stuff that I do in the

8:33

alpha report in the morning. In fact, I

8:34

said the trend on circle is down. We

8:38

know this. And if as soon as we lose

8:40

183, which is the 18287 line here, we're

8:43

going to keep going down. The momentum,

8:46

just understand, and we've been

8:47

following this momentum and talking

8:48

about this in our alpha report all year

8:50

long. The momentum went coreweave and

8:53

then the momentum slowed on coreweave.

8:54

Where did it go? Circle. Circle goes,

8:57

you know, from $30 to $300. It was a

8:59

crazy 10x. Okay, we were talking about

9:01

the entire way. Then the momentum is now

9:05

dying on circle. Where is it going?

9:07

Well, it's actually going to fintech.

9:09

Who's winning? Robin Hood, SoFi, makes

9:13

sense. What the next cycle is, we don't

9:16

know. But for right now, it seems to uh

9:19

uh it's likely to stick to fintech until

9:21

like the next big, you know, IPO or

9:23

whatever comes around. This is just

9:24

simple momentum trading. Anyway, that

9:26

gives us an update on B. Why not

9:27

advertise these things that you told us

9:29

here? I feel like nobody else knows

9:30

about this. We'll we'll try a little

9:32

advertising and see how it goes.

9:33

Congratulations, man. You have done so

9:35

much. People love you. People look up to

9:36

you. Kevin Praath there, financial

9:38

analyst and YouTuber. Meet Kevin. Always

9:40

great to get your take.
