0:00

hey everyone kevin here i just want to

0:01

quickly talk about peloton and the

0:03

disaster going on

0:04

with the consumer product safety

0:07

commission

0:08

warning people who use the peloton tread

0:09

plus treadmill not

0:11

to use it especially around a children

0:14

or pets

0:15

this is obviously a little bit

0:16

problematic so i want to do a quick

0:18

look at uh what the peloton tread looks

0:20

like where the issue is

0:22

show you uh uh i don't know i'm still

0:25

debating if i want to show it to you

0:26

the video of a an uninjured

0:30

child uh getting uh kind of sucked into

0:33

the peloton threat so you can see where

0:35

the issue is uh and uh and then let's

0:37

talk some potential solutions so uh the

0:40

first thing when i heard this news

0:41

uh first thing i thought about was how

0:44

elevated

0:44

the the actual treadmill is

0:48

versus the floor so take a look at this

0:50

right here

0:51

oftentimes i've noticed uh treadmills

0:53

can be relatively

0:54

low to the ground and then you have a

0:57

belt that sort of runs on top of a

0:59

plastic frame

1:00

here you've really got this extension uh

1:03

this protrusion so to speak

1:05

of the actual belt uh exposed

1:08

so let's take a look at that versus some

1:10

regular treadmills here i'm just going

1:12

to hide myself for a second so the

1:13

pictures are nice and big since they're

1:14

over here

1:15

see you've got this plastic you know

1:17

frame over here

1:18

and then you've got a belt another

1:20

unique characteristic is

1:21

the peloton uses these slats that look a

1:23

lot more like this device here uses

1:26

these slats

1:27

which obviously things can get stuck in

1:29

those slats like fingers or

1:31

objects or whatever versus a a solid

1:34

belt but uh yeah i mean take a look at a

1:36

lot of these you don't have that

1:38

that same height protrusion off the back

1:41

the the back certainly not as large you

1:44

don't have the

1:46

rib treads uh yeah which you do have

1:49

with the peloton here's an example of

1:51

one that's a little higher off the

1:52

ground

1:53

but this one this is the bowflex but

1:55

it's also a solid belt

1:56

so maybe potentially less of an issue

1:59

here's maybe a more traditional

2:00

treadmill again

2:01

belt closer to the floor belts closer a

2:03

lot of these are the belt system

2:05

and they're much closer to the floor at

2:06

least that's what they look like

2:08

now if we go on over again to the

2:11

peloton

2:12

let's type that in one more time peloton

2:14

here again

2:15

just for comparison's sake we're going

2:17

to see how

2:18

large these these treads are here and

2:21

how high these are off the floor

2:23

relative to just a

2:25

belt notice too that the frame of the

2:27

product

2:28

is in line with the belt and the other

2:30

treadmills the frame of the product

2:32

protruded

2:33

out uh and above kind of almost acting

2:36

as a little bit of a shield

2:37

from this this tread here and they're

2:40

using belts

2:41

uh this is really just like a like a uh

2:44

the

2:44

the monster or the cookie monster coming

2:46

to just go

2:49

you know uh it's not good and uh

2:52

the recommendation or peloton's reaction

2:55

to this has been well i mean

2:57

keep children and pets away from a

2:59

treadmill it's a workout device right

3:01

uh peloton refutes consumer product

3:03

safety commission claims

3:05

uh cpsc publishes misleading inaccurate

3:08

bulletin on tread plus product safety

3:10

yada yada yada

3:12

there's no reason to stop using the

3:13

tread as long as you follow the safety

3:16

warnings

3:16

you know make sure you have the safety

3:18

plug in so you could take it

3:19

well it's got to be it but make sure

3:21

you're wearing it so you could take it

3:22

out quickly

3:23

if um if there's an emergency but what

3:26

happens in an event

3:27

where maybe uh maybe children turn the

3:30

machine on themselves

3:32

or which which of course there's the

3:33

argument that hey well you should be

3:35

paying attention to your children of

3:36

course i get that i got

3:37

look if anybody would turn a machine

3:39

like this on themselves

3:40

it'd probably be my kids i've got a

3:43

five-year-old

3:44

and three-year-old and these these kids

3:47

go everywhere

3:48

i think from a practical point of view

3:50

and then we'll talk about

3:51

you know kids just turning it on and

3:52

screwing around themselves from a

3:54

practical point of view

3:55

this is a little bit of an issue and we

3:57

you know i look at this and i ask would

3:59

i myself

4:00

as a reasonable adult here would i be

4:01

concerned about this

4:03

and in part i mean after hearing about

4:05

uh you know

4:06

death and marge from the peloton tread

4:09

personally

4:10

if i'm working out on the treadmill and

4:11

i'm on it and my kids are watching tv

4:14

behind me and then maybe they get around

4:16

and start

4:16

start playing around yeah i'd i'd

4:18

probably be a little bit more concerned

4:21

or certainly

4:21

i'd be more cognizant to maybe a block

4:24

off the back of the device

4:25

with some boxes or some pillows or or

4:28

whatever

4:29

just just to block off that back area of

4:32

the treadmill that would be very

4:33

important to me

4:34

uh and and i would do that as a

4:36

precaution

4:38

so where do we go from here peloton's

4:40

saying hey you know this information

4:42

is bs uh the product commission is

4:44

saying hey this is dangerous

4:47

and uh we even have a video here which

4:49

uh this is graphic

4:50

so i'm gonna do a graphic warning here

4:52

graphic cording

4:54

uh this child does not get hurt okay i

4:56

want to make that very clear

4:58

no child was injured in this at least

5:00

that's what the uh

5:02

you know uh display here from cnn says

5:05

credit to cnn for this video i know uh

5:07

probably half of you watching this do

5:08

not like cnn but they are the ones

5:10

sharing this video

5:11

so let's go ahead and give this uh give

5:13

this a play here uh i'm go

5:14

there's no audio so don't expect there

5:16

to be any audio

5:18

all right so uh actually i'm kind of

5:20

covering this corner up over here so

5:21

you've got uh what appears to be maybe

5:23

like a

5:24

five-year-old girl-ish on the actual

5:27

treadmill

5:28

and a younger child probably what i

5:31

think they actually say a two-year-old

5:33

child is playing with a ball near the

5:36

girl

5:36

so the girl has managed to turn this

5:38

treadmill on herself

5:40

it appears to be a play room given the

5:42

uh you know

5:43

the objects around here you've got a mat

5:45

and toys and things like that

5:46

okay all right so let's go ahead and

5:48

just play it

5:50

and obviously we don't see a parent in

5:51

the shot although this does seem to be a

5:53

pretty narrow shot here

5:55

but anyway let's uh focus

6:00

all right so here you can see the boy

6:01

putting a ball on the treadmill

6:04

boom stuck under the treadmill treadmill

6:06

lifts up

6:07

the treadmill's still on right now those

6:09

treads are

6:10

still moving albeit at a very very slow

6:13

pace

6:14

boy was not injured okay very important

6:16

because this is this is

6:17

graphic right uh so anyway

6:21

it's it's things like this that that are

6:23

leading people to be a little concerned

6:25

that

6:25

okay that's not so good i don't want

6:27

people to get

6:28

trapped under because the cookie monster

6:30

is coming to grab their children and

6:32

their pets

6:33

so that's a problem now what does this

6:36

mean

6:36

for peloton long run well peloton has

6:39

obviously

6:40

dropped about nine to ten percent today

6:42

stock wise

6:43

which is a pretty substantial reaction

6:46

uh right now and that's

6:47

that was at about its lows right now

6:49

it's down about 7.3 percent

6:51

what's my take on this my take is

6:54

worst case scenario what uh what what

6:57

peloton needs to do

6:58

is not any kind of recall of all these

7:02

heavy devices that would be a disaster

7:04

you imagine recalling all these devices

7:06

they got enough back orders on this to

7:08

where i'm not expecting this to affect

7:10

order flow could this affect future

7:13

orders

7:13

possibly maybe maybe other companies

7:16

start branding as

7:17

oh get this child safe treadmill or

7:19

whatever who knows could end up being a

7:21

pr stunt for for other companies as well

7:24

but personally what i believe that

7:26

peloton

7:27

would probably benefit from doing if

7:30

they

7:31

needed to do anything like if it came

7:33

out and and

7:34

it was concluded you know what you have

7:36

to do something

7:37

to solve this issue just the advisory to

7:40

watch your kids and pets around the

7:42

device isn't going to work

7:43

if that's the case then what i would

7:45

imagine peloton potentially doing

7:48

is either for free you know give for

7:51

free or

7:52

sell as an attachment for new users that

7:54

will probably just include it honestly

7:56

would be better

7:57

the optics of selling a safety feature

7:59

separately is generally not very good

8:01

uh selling an attachment that can be

8:04

installed or sort of bolted onto this

8:07

this back section here and here so some

8:09

sort of bolt that maybe goes here and on

8:10

the other side

8:12

and it's some kind of maybe a plastic

8:15

shield or i'm kind of picturing like a

8:17

black

8:18

box almost like uh you know a metal kind

8:21

of shield or something that covers just

8:23

the back

8:23

rollers completely almost maybe it even

8:25

kind of floats above the rollers a

8:27

little bit

8:28

uh and so that way it's it's harder for

8:30

something to even get kind of

8:32

caught into that that metal box

8:35

some some i'm sure this could be

8:37

designed much more

8:39

well than what i'm describing here but i

8:41

imagine some sort of retrofit attachment

8:43

to the back of this device

8:44

could be a child or pet safety device

8:47

that could be added to this

8:49

and it would solve the problem

8:50

relatively inexpensively

8:52

i would expect it would probably cost

8:54

peloton somewhere around

8:56

you know if people wanted if it was

8:57

something that they could self-install i

8:59

don't know if it could be self-installed

9:01

that would be the most convenient if

9:02

this could self-install maybe

9:04

attach to the legs down here and uh

9:07

loop around maybe something it has to be

9:09

relatively stupid proof

9:11

but i would imagine the cost would

9:13

probably run peloton somewhere around 50

9:15

bucks

9:16

per tread owner

9:20

sure it's an expense but this is nowhere

9:23

near brand

9:24

killing this if anything this is just

9:25

bringing more i mean remember the rule

9:27

no press is bad press

9:28

ironically if anything this is just

9:29

bringing more attention to the peloton

9:31

brand again

9:32

i think some people are going to look at

9:35

these videos and hear these reports and

9:36

go come on parents like pay attention

9:39

and then this look this can go both ways

9:41

because

9:42

you know like every parent at some point

9:45

is like oh my kids are fine

9:47

they're just in the front room playing

9:48

and then you're cooking some food for

9:50

them because kids are exhausting and

9:51

then

9:51

before you know it they're getting

9:53

sucked under a treadmill

9:55

it's tough kids are tough but anyway i'm

9:57

not trying to make excuses for kids

9:59

mostly i'm looking for parents

10:00

mostly looking at this from a company

10:02

perspective uh this is obviously bad

10:04

press

10:05

uh maybe not necessarily horrible for

10:08

future sales i don't expect there to be

10:10

a ton of cancellations i don't know

10:12

and i don't really expect there to be

10:14

that many people who don't buy this

10:16

because of

10:17

a child getting injured obviously my

10:19

heart goes out for

10:20

not only well just child but the family

10:23

uh of of the child

10:24

that uh that did pass away in march uh

10:27

and it's a concern

10:28

and a peloton might have to include some

10:30

kind of retrofit upgrade

10:32

but i expect that to be maybe worth a

10:35

dollar

10:36

of of stock value not the

10:39

10 or 11 point sell-off that we've seen

10:41

today that's my expectation so my

10:43

thoughts on peloton

10:44

still very bullish on the company we're

10:46

still seeing by the way it's worth doing

10:48

a little website uh analytics uh update

10:50

as well

10:51

we're still seeing growth which is

10:53

really incredible because i was

10:54

expecting after the january 1st

10:57

you know hey come back and work out a

10:58

lot movement and then and then people

11:01

get exhausted and then they don't want

11:02

to work out anymore you know the whole

11:04

new year's resolution thing

11:06

is really expecting after the new year's

11:07

resolutions peloton website activity to

11:10

plummet

11:10

uh and certainly during the reopening

11:12

i've been expecting the peloton

11:14

website activity deployment it just

11:16

hasn't been the case

11:17

look at the alexa search rankings or

11:19

traffic rankings rather

11:21

traffic rankings are phenomenal not only

11:23

are they up through

11:25

march but they've been stable since

11:26

march we do have a little bit of a of a

11:29

shelf here a little bit of growth here

11:31

but still this is this is phenomenal for

11:34

for uh you know a fitness company

11:36

into march i'm sorry into april now of

11:39

the new year and into reopening this is

11:42

still phenomenal website traffic

11:44

still seeing excellent website data

11:47

we are global page views are up 31

11:50

percent over the previous

11:52

three months that global reach up 46

11:55

over the last three months we have

11:58

bounce rate

11:59

that is down one percent over the last

12:01

uh three

12:02

months we do have page views down

12:05

slightly

12:06

we're down 10 on page views over the

12:08

last three months

12:09

and that might be because they may have

12:10

consolidated how many pages they have

12:13

uh time on website is down about three

12:15

percent

12:16

over the last three months though so uh

12:19

anywho

12:20

thank you so much for watching this if
