Why We Chose Glitsa Hardwood Finish | City Floor Supply
FULL TRANSCRIPT
Hi, Joe Glavin with City Floor Supply
and today we're in the process of moving into our new office and showroom.
We uncovered the Fortiboard to expose our beautiful new showroom floors.
This is a good opportunity to discuss what finish we actually used on all of these different species.
We often get questions with regard to what situation requires what finish.
Of all the finishes that we have access to in our distribution warehouse and pro shop,
we chose Glitsa. The Glista system is an acid cure or conversion varnish that's available in gallons
because it has a VOC exemption.
And we love what the Glitsa products can provide us on all of these different species.
We have almost 20 different scenarios of various wood flooring here.
Reclaimed plane face, reclaimed sawn face.
The stains––we have walnut, American cherry, maple, live sawn oak with beautiful burls.
When you have all those various systems, including wide plank American cherry,
you want the treatment––the finish system––to treat the wood the way it should be.
In other words, you want your maples to stay nice and white.
You want your burls to have depth and iridescence.
You want your medallions––all of the wood colors in your medallions––to pop.
You want to expose the beautiful, reclaimed patina in all of your oaks and pines and heart pines.
We want to allow the American cherry to darken and really get that fiery sunset orange over time that American cherry will get.
But we want to keep our maple light. We want to keep our ashes light. We want the depth and the purple-brown
that beautiful wide plank walnut can be.
We found that the Glitsa finish system allows all of that to happen.
The Glitsa finish system that we chose for this application was
Bacca sealer, Glitsa sealer, and Gold Seal Satin.
We have a Trio sander to get the flattest floor possible with all the various species and multidirection.
Because we chose a satin finish and we didn't want any satin streaking, particularly on the American cherry where there's a long run,
it's a very flat grain,
we chose to roll the finish in the application so that we would get that agitation, that fracturing in the film.
We used a 9", 3/8 snap roller cover and China bristle brushes for the cutting edge.
The reason that we chose the rolling method––we have a lot of misdirection going on here.
We have herringbone maple, we have a border for that herringbone and American walnut.
We have herringbone in rift-and-quartered oak that's stained.
We have a medallion. We have inlays of walnut and American cherry and first-grade maple and ash.
The Glitsa finish system is a conversion varnish. It's a catalyzed, solid-based finish that you have to take some precautions with.
We wear 3M respirators, we wear eye protection, and you can even go up to long-sleeved shirts
as well as gloves.
And after each coat––the two seal coats and the successive top coat––we ventilated the space.
Opened the doors, got air flow, several hours after each coat.
The Glitsa finish system is available in our pro shop and if you have any questions give us a call at (800) 737-1786.
