0:00

it's official I am 37 days of sober

0:03

today with not a single drip of alcohol

0:06

including having just spent an entire

0:08

week on a cruise with my wonderful wife

0:10

Lauren and Jack and Max were there as

0:13

well not a single drip on a cruise in

0:16

this video we're going to go through

0:18

these seven things that have changed for

0:20

me after these last 37 days and I want

0:24

to give you a heads up on do I plan to

0:27

continue this or not also in the mean

0:30

time forgive the gloves quite frankly

0:32

they're full of black my hands are full

0:33

of black paint and I think the black

0:36

paint looks more ridiculous than the

0:38

gloves so we'll go for the gloves at

0:40

least until I get the black paint off I

0:42

didn't have any lacquer thinner around

0:44

or mineral spirits not that you should

0:46

be using that on your hands

0:48

anyway but let's stay on track which

0:51

Speaking of being on track that is the

0:53

first big benefit that I found of no

0:57

alcohol it keeps my team and and my

1:00

employees on track so maybe you're not

1:03

an employer but I'm sure you collaborate

1:06

with other people or you work with

1:08

people on your team and one of the

1:09

things that I personally have found is

1:11

when we're not constantly thinking about

1:14

oh let's have a shot at three or let's

1:16

have a beer at 5: we're actually able to

1:19

wake up earlier be more productive at

1:21

work and get more done and instead of

1:25

socializing around alcohol we're finding

1:27

other things to socialize around like

1:29

like shooting semi- shotguns because

1:32

that's fun just an example though but I

1:36

I used to have this mentality of the

1:39

harder you work the harder you get to

1:40

play but the problem was I kind of

1:43

turned into a fool during that play part

1:46

so for at least some of the day I was a

1:49

clown or an idiot and with seven

1:53

children and multiple companies to run I

1:56

can't ever look like a fool so no

2:00

alcohol is one of the easiest changes

2:04

that I could make to maximize the odds

2:08

of never looking like a fool because

2:11

I'll tell you one of the things with

2:12

alcohol is even after Just One Drink

2:15

certainly after three drinks it's over

2:18

after that almost four drinks you know

2:20

that's kind of when you hit the slippery

2:21

slope of you're not going to stop

2:22

yourself anymore that's when you do one

2:25

wrong thing and you ruin a career you

2:27

say one wrong thing you ruin a

2:30

relationship you insinuate something you

2:33

lose your job whatever

2:37

so well I'm not saying that everybody

2:41

should not drink I'm simply saying this

2:43

is one of the big benefits that I found

2:46

and maybe other people are just more

2:49

capable of balancing that relationship

2:52

but personally I never found myself so

2:55

good at it for me it was sort of always

2:58

like all right the workday is over let's

3:00

drink and then you kind of fall asleep

3:03

when you're done drinking and that was

3:05

sort of the end of drinking when you

3:07

fall asleep that's probably a sign that

3:12

maybe you've gone a little too hard now

3:16

second thing that has been a benefit of

3:19

stopping drinking has actually been

3:21

reduced anxiety now this was ironic see

3:24

because I drink a lot of coffee and

3:26

everything you read on the internet says

3:27

oh coffee makes you anxious and so I

3:30

would drink five cups a day or more

3:32

sometimes and I still do uh and so I've

3:35

gone through spurts of quitting coffee

3:37

and what I would find is I had the

3:40

coffee headaches and then I got through

3:42

the coffee headaches and then I kind of

3:44

just got tired at random times

3:45

throughout the day especially like after

3:47

lunch and I sort of lost control of when

3:50

I could sort of peak my energy which I

3:52

can sort of control with coffee I know

3:53

there's about a 2hour lag time to Peak

3:56

bell curve and if you kind of time that

3:58

perfectly is really good uh spoiler the

4:01

way that works is if you know you're

4:03

going to crash at 2:00 p.m. make sure

4:05

you start drinking coffee at 12: or like

4:08

11:30 so you start getting the up on the

4:10

bell curve anyway everybody said coffee

4:13

was what causes

4:14

anxiety so I cured that by drinking

4:17

alcohol and what I found was drinking

4:21

alcohol would just make me anxious to

4:24

drink more alcohol now it does cure very

4:27

quickly it is like a fast acting

4:29

medicine and that's possibly why it's so

4:32

easy to fall into the Trap of regularly

4:34

drinking because it is very quick

4:37

medicine if you're having a terrible day

4:39

or you just feel like absolute crap

4:41

there's nothing better than a shot at

4:43

tequila or maybe you're into a whiskey

4:46

or honestly even just a hard day of work

4:48

a nice cold

4:50

beer so good and I'm going to miss that

4:54

because it was wonderful just the Cure

4:57

and the relief that it gives you was so

5:01

good but

5:03

interestingly that relief just led to

5:06

that same anxiety the next day like oh

5:08

it's 400 p.m. or it's 5:00 p.m. or it's

5:10

6 p.m. it's it's time to play with the

5:12

kids or hang out with the family oh but

5:14

I'm anxious I'm still thinking about

5:15

work okay I'll just drink to get over

5:17

the thought of work and then be able to

5:19

play with the family and then the next

5:21

day surprise surprise you have anxiety

5:22

leading up to that time because it's

5:24

sort of your body telling you hey it's

5:25

time to drink again it was so weird and

5:28

now I do not have that anxiety anymore

5:30

and it's crazy because I feel like I've

5:32

always had anxiety of my adult life

5:35

since I was 18 years old it's been crazy

5:38

uh and so that has been a huge game Cher

5:40

for me another one this one's probably a

5:42

little bit more straightforward uh I do

5:45

find that I'm able to see myself in a

5:47

different light uh and that I'm able to

5:49

evaluate what I'm doing right and what

5:51

I'm doing wrong my successes and

5:53

failures better I'm definitely not

5:55

always right I make a lot of mistakes

5:57

but there are mistakes that I make that

5:59

I look at and go oh I should I can I

6:01

learn from this and I feel like my focus

6:04

has been much more clear over the past

6:06

37 Days some folks at work have told me

6:09

I seem more productive as well uh not

6:12

that I was unproductive previously just

6:14

like an enhanced version so if I was

6:17

already productive even more productive

6:19

and and I think I'm just sort of getting

6:20

started in that transition I think

6:22

you'll find on the channel some

6:24

productivity enhancements over the next

6:26

uh few weeks really starting now and I

6:29

hope you come to enjoy them and if you

6:30

do make sure to subscribe and you know

6:33

we can help each other out in the

6:35

transition I know some of you are also

6:37

following these footsteps and so I I

6:39

feel like I I somewhat I owe you an

6:41

update uh because you know I know people

6:44

have this this impression of me that I

6:46

change my mind often I rarely change my

6:48

mind unless there's like a really good

6:50

reason to change my mind uh like if I'm

6:53

driving and there's a better option I'm

6:56

going to change my mind right you're

6:57

driving a company you're going to you're

6:59

you're changing your Investments

7:01

whatever right um but uh this this is

7:05

important and I think it's also valid to

7:08

give a fair update here that I'm still

7:10

on the path uh still haven't had a sip

7:13

of alcohol and boy it was it was

7:14

tempting it's been tempting but I have

7:17

not uh relented so I've even gone

7:20

purposefully to some of our favorite

7:22

drinking spots uh to sort of tempt

7:25

myself or go I've gone to bars with

7:27

Lauren to tempt myself

7:30

and uh I I have not uh which which has

7:33

been great so I'll uh I'll show you some

7:35

pictures as uh as proof in the pudding

7:37

so to speak in just a moment uh but

7:39

another thing that I found and so this

7:41

is the fourth reason is uh it's a lot

7:44

easier to wake up in the morning I don't

7:47

know what it was but something about

7:49

alcohol does make it a little harder for

7:51

you to wake up the next morning uh it's

7:54

so I've been really enthused about not

7:57

uh drinking and having a really easy

7:59

time to wake up in the morning because

8:02

I'll tell you there's nothing worse than

8:03

drinking a lot the day before and then

8:05

the next day you're supposed to you know

8:07

be up early and I wake up somewhere

8:09

around 3:00 a.m. it's really difficult

8:12

to uh to wake up at 3:00 a.m. if uh

8:15

you're always drinking uh now uh here it

8:17

is here's the photo I wanted to show

8:19

this was just uh us on a cruise here we

8:22

actually went to this Star Wars Lounge

8:26

which was really cool it's called the

8:28

hypers space Lounge it's aboard a Disney

8:31

cruise uh look at uh just what this kind

8:34

of scene here looks like oh there's

8:36

Lauren uh want to show the scenery

8:39

around here uh yeah I think I kind of

8:43

was more interested in honestly some of

8:45

the decor and thinking about the

8:47

architecture and like how could I how

8:49

could I use some of this in a future

8:50

office of mine or whatever I was so

8:52

fascinated with even like how they did

8:53

the lights under here or whatever sorry

8:56

probably not the best example but look

8:57

at what the lounge looks like when you

8:58

look up from the table that's a bar with

9:01

a video screen that plays sort of Star

9:03

Wars battleships that shoot each other I

9:05

mean what a what a cool cool place

9:09

man uh yeah

9:12

so I you know I went there uh and didn't

9:17

drink but it was

9:20

tempting uh but yeah easier to wake up

9:22

earlier for sure another thing too is uh

9:26

the fifth thing uh being oh mind you

9:29

just on waking up early I think waking

9:31

up early is a productivity hack it's

9:33

extremely useful because nobody bothers

9:35

me in the morning and I'm generally not

9:37

very productive at night because I'm

9:39

tired it's the end of the day so just be

9:42

very productive in the morning it's

9:44

pretty exciting and I really enjoy that

9:46

uh number five uh this one's a little

9:48

more straightforward but because I have

9:50

a 9-year-old a six-year-old now who's

9:52

about to turn seven and I have five

9:55

children uh one and under it's because

9:57

Ella and CLA just had a one-year

9:58

birthday isn't that crazy it's been one

10:00

year already since my twins were born

10:02

and then four months the other three

10:03

will be one long story uh but yes I have

10:07

seven children so uh I got to be an

10:09

example for all of them so I have seven

10:11

reasons to be an example for them but

10:13

it's not just them it's also my

10:15

employees my team uh everybody who works

10:18

with me I think it's it's very very

10:19

important to be uh an example for

10:21

everybody and to prove that you know I

10:24

can do this number six this one's a

10:28

little straightforward as well well

10:29

weight I have a weight challenge

10:32

basically what we're doing is myself and

10:35

someone else in the office we are on a

10:37

challenge to lose as much weight as

10:39

possible between like a couple months

10:41

ago and the end of the year and it's

10:44

basically like a preut phase so we can

10:47

bulk after that so that's just something

10:49

we're working on and cutting out alcohol

10:52

I was surprised but in like a 200

10:54

calorie beer probably 150 calories of it

10:57

is the actual alcohol I was sort of

11:00

shocked by that uh but anyway if you had

11:04

three drinks a night you're probably

11:06

looking at somewhere between I mean I

11:09

know you could get like a a light like

11:11

vodka or something that might be 70

11:13

calories but let's just go with an

11:14

average of uh you know 300 calories a

11:17

night or even 400 especially if you mix

11:19

a drink go with 400 time 7 it's a lot uh

11:24

you know 4 * 7 now you're at 2800

11:27

calories I mean that's almost a pound of

11:28

fat

11:29

every single week so over the course of

11:32

a month you're probably at like three

11:33

lounds of fat that you're either trying

11:35

to you're constantly either carrying or

11:39

you're you're having to offset with more

11:41

exercise and you're not losing other fat

11:43

because of that right so uh that's

11:46

something to consider uh and then of

11:48

course number seven is this is just sort

11:51

of like I I don't want to say that I'll

11:53

never drink again I don't think that I

11:58

have this critical problem where it's

12:01

like oh my gosh yeah you put me near

12:02

that I'm screwed uh and so I do think

12:06

that there'll probably be times that it

12:08

makes sense to after a certain period of

12:12

time you know to be able to celebrate

12:14

with friends or family or whatever to to

12:16

you know have a drink or two uh I think

12:19

what I found and I'm not there yet I

12:22

probably want to get to at least the New

12:25

Year honestly uh and then and then even

12:27

in the new year I mean then be at what

12:29

90 days or something like that 97 days

12:31

or something maybe I'll go for 100 right

12:34

uh and then we'll just see I mean like

12:35

what reasons do I have to celebrate in

12:37

the new year I mean my birthday in

12:38

January is not going to be one I know

12:41

that is a celebrated reason but that's

12:44

not a big deal for me uh I generally

12:46

don't love my birthday it's like oh I'm

12:49

older now uh but anyway so um but

12:53

everybody's different and that's okay

12:54

but yeah I think um you know I think

12:57

it's like if if there's a really serious

13:00

problem it makes sense to stay away

13:03

because one drink will just lead to

13:05

another and then you kind of get back

13:06

into the daily habit I don't think I'm

13:08

of that problem but I don't know I mean

13:11

I guess let's get through the first 100

13:14

first and then see uh the downside is I

13:17

feel like it's a very slippery slope uh

13:21

and so I just want to be candid about

13:22

that I I do worry that like you know if

13:25

you do go oh yeah okay I'll have a drink

13:28

with you and you're just sort of like

13:30

easy uh then everything becomes a reason

13:33

to drink again oh yeah let's go to the

13:35

bar and get drinks oh yeah let's go you

13:38

know to date night and have drinks what

13:41

and then it's just every occasion all of

13:42

a sudden becomes drinks again and then

13:44

before you know it it's just turns daily

13:46

again because otherwise you'll have the

13:48

anxiety again so I'm yeah that's not

13:52

good I do find also that personally like

13:56

if you're going to drink as soon as you

13:59

hit that fourth drink you're screwed

14:03

like your reason just goes out the

14:04

toilet and it's so much easier to go 567

14:07

is bad so uh personally I think uh the

14:11

way to do it is that you go like the

14:13

easiest defense is one drink but it has

14:17

a floater and then you know like when

14:19

that one drink is over no refills maybe

14:22

that's a way to moderate it but again I

14:25

I I just feel like you're making deals

14:27

with the Devil

14:29

frankly and I I have no intentions or

14:31

plans to go back to drinking at this

14:33

point I just part of me says like do I

14:37

really see myself as like never again in

14:39

my life having a drink like my kid's

14:41

21st birthday and I going be like nah

14:43

man I don't drink oh go for it on your

14:46

own you know like I do feel like I do

14:48

have some fomo of that uh so I'll just

14:51

have to figure out how to balance that

14:53

but for now uh it's going to be a pretty

14:55

straight straight shot so to speak

14:58

anyway uh and uh I'll just drink my

15:00

favorite uh bottle over here toppo so uh

15:05

cheers to Topo

15:07

15:10
