My name is Mark. I serve on the Council
of Elders. We're glad to see you here
this morning. Welcome to the gathering
of God's people. If you are new here
this morning and you would like to find
out a bit more about our church, you can
scan the sticker that is on the chair in
front of you. If you scan that sticker,
it will take you to a link tree page and
it has a number of helpful links that
will tell you about the church. It's
where you can find sermon outlines,
slides for the sermons, and also find a
growth group. Now, today we will begin a
new preaching series on the book of
Numbers.
Numbers is the fourth book in the
pentitute and it recounts Israel's
journey from Mount Si right to the
borders of the promised land. a journey
that spans 40 years in the wilderness.
Now, these 40 years would later become a
source of rich reflection for other
writers in the Old Testament who would
draw on Israel's wilderness experience
to reinforce their own message as they
were speaking to the people of Israel.
And this includes a number of Psalms uh
two of which we'll be reading this
morning as part of our gathering. And
we're now going to read the first of
those two psalms, Psalm 99. We're going
to read this responsively. So, please
stand as we read this together.
So, I'll read the words in black and
then we'll all read the words in red
together.
Psalm 99.
The Lord reigns. Let the peoples
tremble. He sits enthroned upon the
cherubim. Let the earthquake. The Lord
is great in Zion. He's exalted over all
the peoples. Let them praise your great
and awesome name. Holy is he. The king
in his might loves justice. You have
established equity. You have executed
justice and righteousness in Jacob.
Exalt the Lord our God. Worship at his
foottool. Holy is he.
>> Moses and Aaron were among his priests.
Samuel also was among those who called
upon his name. They called to the Lord
and he answered them. In the pillar of
cloud, he spoke to them. They kept his
testimonies and the statute that he gave
them. Oh Lord our God, you answered
them. You were a forgiving God to them,
but an avenger of their wrongdoings.
Exalt the Lord our God and worship at
his holy mountain. For the Lord our God
is holy. Amen. Please be seated.
I'll now lead us in prayer.
Almighty God, in our gathering this
morning, we ask that you would reveal
yourself to us in your word, so that we
might learn to exalt you as you deserve.
Forgive us for how often we make you out
to be less than who you really are, for
how we create false gods in our own
image. May your truth confront and
comfort us that your glorious holiness
and grace in Christ will cause us to
grow in faith and hope and love. In
Jesus name we pray. Amen. Now, as is our
tradition, after we finish each sermon
series, we will hang up the sermon
artwork on the pillars here that you can
see on level one. Now, we just finished
the series on Titus in December. So,
we're going to be hanging up the Titus
sermon series artwork. Now, it was a
sermon preached by Joel, Adrian, and me.
And since I'm up here leading, I'm going
to get Joel and Adrian to do the honors
of hanging the sermon artwork up on this
side here.
>> Okay, Titus.
Okay, thanks guys. Now, today we'll be
starting a new series on the book of
numbers, but this is not actually
something totally new. In fact, our
journey through the pentitute began way
back in 2024.
Now when we started uh the Leviticus
series last year, I found this triangle
diagram from Michael Morales helpful how
he puts together the structure of the
pentetude, the first five books of the
Bible. Now although the words on this
triangle may be a little bit small for
you, I think u if you look at the bottom
of the triangle, you will be able to see
on the bottom left Genesis and Exodus.
All right. So that puts uh the beginning
on the left at the bottom and then on
the layer above you'll see Leviticus and
then on the bottom right you can see
numbers and Deuteronomy. Now what this
triangle shows us is helpfully that
these five books all work together as
one unified piece of writing. Right? You
have Genesis to the book of Deuteronomy
all five together. You have Leviticus
right in the middle. And in Leviticus,
as we saw last year, the pinnacle of
that is Leviticus 16 with the day of
atonement. So we began this journey
through the pentitute in 2024. We did a
series on Genesis.
And then we continued in Exodus,
continuing in 2024, right from February
to the middle of the year. And then for
Leviticus, we did that last year, the
first half of the year. And then now in
2026,
we have done Leviticus and we're now on
to the book of Numbers.
Now, if you look at this artwork behind
us here, the Numbers artwork, uh, for
those of you who have started reading
the book of Numbers, you'll probably be
able to work out what this is depicting,
right? If you've read Numbers 2, Israel
is given instructions on the layout for
the camp, right? You have the tabernacle
right in the center and then around the
tabernacle, do you know what this is?
>> Right. Okay. You have the Levites and
then outside you have stretching all the
way into the distance the other tribes
of the nation of Israel. Right. You have
this camp and the perspective that we
have as we view this artwork is what God
would have seen, right? looking down
onto the people of Israel and you have
the people of Israel laid out like this
great army. Yeah, this is a military
formation and they are ready to enter
the promised land. Right? If you think
back to Genesis at the end when Jacob
and his family went to Egypt, they went
as 70 people. But now some 400 plus
years later, they are this huge army
covering the land. So this year from
January to April, we will be beginning
the book of Numbers. We'll be preaching
through chapters 1 to 10. And Pastor
Jerome will be taking the lead in this
series joined by some of the apprentices
as well as David Caul who is on break
from seminary. So do pray for them as
they preach and labor in the ministry of
the word. For the remainder of the year,
what will we be doing? Well, once we're
done with numbers, we're going to be
doing Philippians from May to September
and then two Peter from September to
December. On top of that, we will be
having in 20 Sundays of this year GetIts
and Weight Watch. That's right. So,
we'll have six GetIts and 14 Weight
Watch. Okay. Six Getits, 14 Weight Watch
Watts. So, as you survey the year ahead,
I hope they're excited for all the
opportunities that it will give us to
reach out to our friends and family
while at the same time, the church
continues to be edified in the preaching
of the Old and New Testament. Now, since
we have just finished 2025 and it's the
beginning of a new year, I hope that you
have been able to take some time to
reflect on the year that has just been
and to plan and prepare for the year
ahead. For my wife and I, this is
something that we try to do at least
once a year. Ideally, we do it a bit
more frequently, maybe once a quarter.
Sometimes it doesn't happen, but at
least once a year. So, we sit down, we
think about how things have been going
the last one year, and then we think
about the next year. How should we be
planning our lives, investing in our
growth, and being on mission for Jesus.
So, if that's something you've already
done, good. If not, I would encourage
you to take some time before you get too
busy with the year. Right? January's
already started and things are starting
to get busy. Once you've done that, one
of the ways that you can make these
plans concrete is to think about the
calendar. So, think about all the things
that are happening the year ahead,
especially the evangelistic and outreach
events, and plan how to make the best
use of these things. Another way that
you can do it is to think about what
kind of training you would need to
better serve the Lord Jesus. So think
about how you've been doing in your life
and ministry and think maybe I should
grow in these areas. I need training. I
need to be equipped for these things. Uh
one way to do that is to commit to
joining one of our SOCUM classes. So
SOCUM stands for school of Christian
ministry and the tagline is get trained
to do God's work God's way. And this
focuses on practical ministry skills
with hands-on training. And in the first
half of this year we have three classes.
We have one on one-on-one disciplehip,
another one on growth group leading and
one more on evangelism. So think if
these are ministry skills that you need
to better serve the Lord, then do take
note of the dates and sign up for these
classes.
So as disciples of the Lord Jesus, we
are called to make the most of our days
to be zealous for good works and to do
all things to the glory of God. So may
we learn to live in this year 2026 with
this desire to serve the Lord this year
and every year that he gives us. Now
today for our first sermon in the book
of Numbers, Pastor Jordan will be giving
us an overview of the book of Numbers.
And to prepare us for that, we will be
reading one of the Bible's own summaries
of the reflection of the events in the
wilderness. Psalm 106. Joe will be
reading for us.
>> Good morning, church. I'll be reading
from Psalm 106. Uh we'll definitely need
a Bible. Uh if you need a physical one,
just raise your hands and the ushers
will hand you one.
Um,
as Mark mentioned, uh, Psalm 106 is, uh,
a reflection of what has happened in,
uh, Numbers. It's also a little bit more
than that. It's a whole history of
Israel's unfaithfulness
and God's faith versus God's
faithfulness. Um in it you'll see some
reference to the events in the book of
numbers but also what is also true is
that it contains a whole history of
Israelite una faithfulness and the
character of that would to some extent
be true of us uh when we consider God's
faithfulness. So as we read uh let us
reflect uh and be ashamed and thankful
to God who is merciful to us. Psalm 106.
Praise the Lord, oh give thanks to the
Lord, for he is good, for his steadfast
love endures forever. Who can utter the
mighty deeds of the Lord or declare all
his praise.
Blessed are they who observe justice,
who do righteousness at all times.
Remember me, O Lord, when you show favor
to your people. Help me when you save
them, that I may look upon the
prosperity of your chosen ones, that I
may rejoice in the gladness of your
nation, that I may glory with your
inheritance.
Both we and our fathers have sinned. We
have committed iniquity.
We have done wickedness. Our fathers
when they were in Egypt did not consider
your wondrous works. They did not
remember the abundance of your steadfast
love but rebelled by the sea at the Red
Sea.
Yet he saved them for his name's sake
that he might make known his mighty
power. He rebuked the Red Sea and it
became dry and he led them through the
deep as through a desert. So he saved
them from the hand of the foe and
redeemed them from the power of the
enemy. And the waters covered their
adversaries. Not one of them was left.
Then they believed his words. They sang
his praise.
But they soon forgot his works. They did
not wait for his counsel.
But they had a wanted craving in the
wilderness and put God to the test in
the desert.
He gave them what they asked, but sent a
wasting disease among them.
When men in the camp were jealous of
Moses and Aaron, the holy one of the
Lord, the earth opened and swallowed up
Nathan and covered the company of
Abiram.
Fire also broke out in their company.
The flame burn up the wicked.
They made a calve in Horeb and worshiped
a metal image. They exchanged the glory
of God for the image of an ox that eats
grass.
They forgot God, their savior, who had
done great things in Egypt, wondrous
works in the land of Ham, and awesome
deeds by the Red Sea. Therefore, he said
he would destroy them, had not Moses,
his chosen one, stood in the breach
before him to turn away his wrath from
destroying them.
Then they despised the pleasant land,
having no faith in his promise. They
murmured in their tents and did not obey
the voice of the Lord. Therefore, he
raised his hand and swore to them that
he would make them fall in the
wilderness and would make their
offspring fall among the nations,
scattering them among the lands. Then
they yoke themselves to the bail of Peor
and ate sacrifices offered to the dead.
They provoked the Lord to anger with
their deeds and a plague broke out among
them. Then Phineas stood up and
intervened and the plague was stayed and
that was counted to him as righteousness
from generation to generation forever.
They angered him at the waters of Mebah
and it went ill with Moses on their
account for they made his spirit bitter
and he spoke rashly with his lips.
They did not destroy the peoples as the
Lord commanded them, but they mixed with
the nations and learned to do as they
did. They served their idols, which
became a snare to them. They sacrificed
their sons and daughters to the demons
and poured out innocent blood, the blood
of their sons and daughters, whom they
sacrificed to the idols of Canaan. And
the land was polluted with blood.
Thus they became unclean by their acts
and played the in their deeds.
Then the anger of the Lord was kindled
against his people and he abhored his
heritage. He gave them into the hand of
the nations so that those who hated them
ruled over them. Their enemies oppressed
them and they were brought into
subjection under their power. Many times
he delivered them, but they were
rebellious in their purposes and were
brought low through their iniquity.
Nevertheless, he looked upon them. He
looked upon their distress when he heard
their cry. For their sake, he remembered
his covenant and relented according to
the abundance of his steadfast love. He
caused them to be pied by all those who
helped them captive.
Save us, O Lord our God, and gather us
from among the nations that we may give
thanks to your holy name and glory in
your praise. Blessed be the Lord, the
God of Israel, from everlasting to
everlasting. And let all the people say,
"Amen." Praise the Lord. This is the
word of the Lord.
Good morning church and hello again. Uh
please stand.
Just now as I was reading Psalm 106, I
was thinking last night I um I got angry
with my son because for so long I've
been telling him to do the same thing
over and over again for a while. And I
lost I I kind of lost my patience and
scolded him. And then now reading Psalm
106, I see God God is is so patient with
his people. And I was thinking my son is
he can't do what he wants to do because
even I can't do what I want to do. I I
cannot fulfill what I need to do. He
can't fulfill what he needs to do.
Right? And then looking at God, God is
so patient and only he he can fulfill
these promises that he's done that he
said to Abraham, his promises
only he can do it. And then when you
read Psalm 106, you see that in Christ
and this promises we see in Psalm being
fulfilled. We see that God is the one
who is faithful, not us. God is the one
that took a people that was against him
and he made them into his people for his
purpose is to glorify him. So let us
sing to our glory to our glorified God.
Oh God, our help in ages past.
Our hope for years to come.
Our shelter from their stormy blast.
and our eternal home.
Under the shadow of your joy,

Blessed be to our everlasting God and
all praise to him. Please be seated.
Well, this morning you will have noticed
that we have done something special with
the seating. We are sitting in our
growth groups and the growth groups are
sitting according to geographical
location. We divided the hall up into
five regions, north, sou, east, west, and
central. Now, to make sure that we all
know which region we're sitting in, I'm
going to call out the regions. If you're
sitting or you're from that region, give
us a cheer. Okay? So, those from the
north, give us a cheer.
Okay, those up here in the front and
those in the south.
>> Okay, let's try the south again. Those
in the south.
>> That's better. Okay, now those in the
east.
>> Hello from the east. Those in the west.
>> Okay, you're definitely here. And last
but not least, those in central.
Okay. Now, we've done this today because
we want to celebrate the planting of
five new growth groups. So, we announced
these growth groups last week, but we
didn't really have time to dwell on it.
And so, today is a chance to do that.
Growth groups in CRC are a key part of
our way of fulfilling our Lord's
commission to make disciples. This is
both in the nurturing and maturing of
Christians in our own congregation as
well as in our desire to reach out and
to preach the gospel to non-Christians.
And so to that end, our adult growth
groups are distributed according to
geographical location. We don't do it by
demographic like age or by timing, but
by where you live. So it is our ambition
to keep doing this and to plant more
groups to cater both to the needs of our
own church, our own people here as well
as to make sure that non-Christians have
easy access to the gospel wherever they
are living in the Clang Valley. So we're
always thankful therefore when we can
plant new groups as we are doing this
month. We're going to be adding five new
groups. I'm going to call them up and as
I call out these new groups, I would
like the whole group to stand up and
show us where you're from. Okay. So, the
first one is in the north. It is North
Kiara.
It's Nikki and
>> they're all missing. There's a row of
empty seats.
>> No, it's not a bad thing. Nikki told me
why. He said that most of the group are
on duty this morning.
>> See, well done.
In fact, the leader of this new group is
Pastor Jerome, and he's preaching this
morning. So, he's busy getting ready for
the sermon. Okay, we have one more group
in the north. It is Stapak Gi,
where is Stap?
Those from Stapak,
we got one, two. Okay, Adrian is at the
back there. Um, he is the leader of this
new group. It is a split from the
current Wang sama ju. Now our third
group we have is in the west in the land
of bakut. It is clang.
Okay. Give him a hand. Okay. Clang gi.
Thank you. So this group is being
planted from the current clang and
kotakuming group which is going to split
into two. Clang and kotakamuning. Saman
is going to be leading this new group.
The fourth group is closer to HQ. It is
in the central region. It is TTDI
right over there.
Okay. So this group is being planted
from Filio Damasar Gigi and Jason Tan
will be leading the group. Now last but
not least the fifth group is a special
group. It is not a location based group
but it is one of those special groups
that we have started to cater for those
with requirements that are different
from normal adult GG's. It is a new
mom's GG.
Okay. It is led by Joy Gan and Robin
Lang. And if the technical setup is
working,
you will see them. So turn to the camera
behind and wave at them. That camera
will be back. Yeah. Wave to them at the
camera. They can see you. You can see
them. Okay. Very good. So we have these
five groups and I wanted to hear from
the leaders of these new groups so that
we can get to know the groups a bit and
also pray for them. So GG leaders,
please join me on stage. The five new
groups.
Okay, as you can see as they come up
there are quite a number of them. So I
have asked them to prepare answers to
three questions and to give us succinct
answers. Okay, the three questions are
what is notable or special about the
place you are planting your growth group
and then what are your vision? What is
your vision for the group and also how
can we pray for you? So we're going to
start in the west with Clang Gigi Saman.
>> Yes. Yeah. So actually before this uh
Mark asked us uh each of us to prepare
something that represent our location.
Okay. So obviously you all know Clang
famous for bakut right? But I can't
bring bakut here because it's going to
be messy.
>> So I bring this.
>> You guys know what's this?
>> Let me show you. Okay.
>> Wow.
>> Wow.
Okay. So if you guys didn't know this is
apple strudel. Okay. Ever is actually
quite famous in Clang. Okay. Because
there's this bakery called Fruity
Bakery. They actually sell this. They
actually influence all the other region
to start selling this. Okay. Yeah. So,
uh I brought two. So, later uh I'll put
it behind. Okay. Whoever sat to try you
get it. Okay.
>> First come, first serve.
>> Yeah. First come, first serve. Yeah. So
uh beside bakote, beside apple strudel,
uh we also have yoyo ice and all the bit
of weather as well as I'm not sure you
know about this fried chicken called
clang jaya fried chicken. Those who know
it
>> don't know. Oh then you'll bring you
there. Okay.
>> It's all about the food.
>> Yes. All of our food. You can see us.
Okay.
All right. Okay. Besides food. Okay.
Besides food. So if you didn't know
where Clang is, Clang is the western
most of Clang Valley. Okay. And next to
it is C. So literally no one will go
there outside of Clang no one will go
there unless there's a reason right so
uh that means that the people there in
clang they have their own uh I mean we
have our own subculture and um the
people the Chinese there is many specken
and uh we also have a big community of
uh Indian friends as well yeah so for
our GG we are located at the south side
of plank uh at Bukitingi Botanic right
it's next to the famous mall where you
usually hear that all kind people go
there and lay one. Okay. Aon thingy.
Yeah. So that's something about Gigi and
uh my vision is okay. Before I talk
about vision um 3K GG clan Kotakun GG we
have been meeting uh in Kotakuning for
since 2019.
Okay. And it has been a challenge for uh
the clang people because for clang to
travel to Katakun uh it's 20 minutes
away it's still fine but the biggest
problem is there's actually a two ringit
toll at time you cross two ringit then
you go back two ringit again okay so now
uh thank you god god has uh blessed us
with a new gig now clang uh in clang gig
so I'll be heading there and uh Jeremiah
will be taking over the kotak meaning
gig
Okay. So yes, so some of the things that
you can pray for us um three things. So
one is um for us the members to be able
to connect into to the community there
because most of us even though we live
in clank not me I live here uh but the
members live in clank but we don't work
there. So uh our friends are mostly
colleagues uh from PJ or somewhere else.
So now uh it will be a slight challenge
for us to connect to them. So hopefully
with this new GG we able to do so. And
secondly also with this new clang GG we
have also God has also blessed us with a
few of our I mean friends uh who are
Indians and uh we we want to ask God to
give us the ability to minister to them
well. All right. Uh so that's the second
one. And the third one is definitely
also to pray for Jeremiah as the new
Gigi leader for Kotakun.
>> Yeah.
Uh so hi everyone I'm Jarro Maya I'll be
leading the Kota kamuning GG so please
pray that um it'll be a smooth
transition in Kotakumi is not new to me
I was there about 15 years ago playing
golf
uh Kotakuni is famous for their golf
course called Kotapay so if any of you
know uh but pray for me uh to be a good
leader to them uh not just for good
handicaps. Anyone knows of not not good
techniques, but to be a good leader.
Pray also that I stick to the text,
focus on the Bible, and not slice off
into the rough.
>> Okay, we got no golfers here. Scratch
it. Okay. Okay. Last one. Pray for me.
I'll pray for our group that uh like
doing a long drive,
>> the word of God reaches far and wide.
>> Yeah.
Okay, thank you. Next up, we have Nikki
representing
>> North Kara. Yes.
>> Uh, yeah. So, I'm the assistant to
Jerome. He's going to be the leader of
this GG. So, I know what you're think.
North Kara. Wow. Kiara. So, atas, right?
But um
maybe maybe if you think about it
strategically actually we are Monara
where Monara meets Sigour
you don't know where Sing or not okay so
Sagamort is actually a very like I would
say um family all the old houses are
over there a lot of people are has been
there for like 20 years over there okay
so we are where the city life meets the
suburban life where uh the busy
working-class people meet all the aging
family people who are raising their kids
or even some new families there as well.
So the thing about what you need to know
about Mona is that we always thought
Mona already full right wow you go there
all the buildings very tall already like
packed but no actually there's still a
lot of empty land so I watch E-hung a
lot all the property stuff so uh he has
been saying that got more and more condo
coming up okay so yeah that's uh one
reason why we also in a very strategic
location um that said our address is
still in Monara um so I didn't prepare
anything to
But if I would prepare and bring
something up, it will be a Korean ajuma.
Yes. Um she'll be holding her jajang
over here maybe serving all of you but I
cannot bring that. Uh so um I okay I
don't want to be disrespectful but we
know that Monara is largely and famously
international. A lot of Korean a lot of
Japanese over there and every time you
on foodie you'll see new authentic
location in Monara
right sorry and it was gonna be Korean
food and things like that. So um yeah
that's that's generally what we are at
or where we are at um the vision we have
for North Kara. So I spoke to Jerome a
little bit uh just recently and um let
me channel Jerome
North Kara the Gigi growth very easy
very simple the point of having a GG to
grow right so North Kara you're supposed
to grow in two years time I want to see
you guys expand and split again wow
sounds very simple but no I don't know
maybe okay
I'm not I'm not Jerma sorry I cannot I
know I you see my my hands just shaking.
Um
I know Jerome will shake. Um so anyway
yeah um it's a really again as mentioned
it's a very strategic location where we
have a lot of working-class people. So
we can meet both the working class and
also the uh city people. Uh so I give
you an example Kelly who is living in
Sagamut. She has been in first in BSDG
which is northern even more compared to
North Kara. Then after that when we got
a new Gigi plant Kapong she came down
south a little bit more and after that
Sento a little bit more south and then
now she is in North Kara. So finally she
found a place called home. Yay. Yeah.
Yeah. Yeah. Okay. So yeah. So really we
have a lot of uh people we can reach out
to. Uh and yeah um that's that's mainly
it. um you can pray for us to u
meaningfully connect with the whole
community over there because I know
there's a lot of people we haven't
reached out to Sigamu Dalam. It's a
little little bit distant to all of us
over here. Um and also uh pray that God
will give us the wisdom to continue to
lead this GG faithfully. Uh pray for
myself also because uh I'm going to be
assisting Jerome and we all know that
Jerome is uh the pastor of this church.
So he won't have a lot of time with us.
So I pray that I will be able to uh lead
and groom this Gigi to be more and more
Christlike to be more and more like
God's uh sons. Yeah.
>> Thank you Nikki. We'll be praying for
you guys. Now next up is Stapak Gigi and
Wangui. Before you begin, please keep it
succinct.
>> Okay.
>> Okay. Wait. Condensing everything.
Okay. Go for it.
>> Okay. Ble. Okay. Hey church. Uh my name
is Adrian. I usually attend the PM
congregation and I'm the existing growth
group leader of Wangam Au GG. So uh sass
sing okay uh sata
um it's okay I didn't bring anything for
you guys here but it's okay because they
are already here all the t students
>> okay all but two but uh no there's more
of them there just uh probably PM
>> yeah so um uh this is actually a picture
of uh Gigi every Thursday night
>> um it looks warming and cozy, right? But
actually, it's really, really cramped.
Uh, it's hard. So, every time someone to
get to the toilet, they have to like,
"Excuse me, excuse me, excuse me, excuse
me, excuse me." Uh, it's a good problem
to have. It means it's time for us to
split. So, praise God for the growth,
especially for a GG that is so far away.
So, uh, I'm also here to explain a
little bit about the naming of it. So,
Wang Maju is like the bigger area. Sap
is the inner part. Is it opposite?
>> Yeah.
>> Oh, sorry. Clearly failed my geography.
But uh to make the naming more precise
uh we've made the Wanga Maju plant uh go
out. So that means uh we are keeping the
Satabak name for the old GG whereas the
new Gigi under Lii will be now called
Wanga Maju. So that means the same
Satabat GG now will be meeting now Wang
Maju changed to Satavat will be still
meeting at PV8.
>> That's not confusing at all.
>> Yeah, definitely not. So, the best way
to do this is to just check out the
growth group website and contact me
where I can hopefully make it less
confusing for all of you. But yeah,
PV18. Uh, that's where we're at. Uh,
okay. Yeah. You're ready for the new
Satap GG tagline.
>> We are set apart for Jesus.
>> Okay, Lizzy, take it away.
Yeah. So,
Hopefully that will help you remember
right the the existing Gigi is now Satak
and the new one is the old name Wangsa
Madu Gigi. Okay. So I brought something
to uh symbolize what Wangamu is about
and it's this shrub here. Why? Because
Wangamu is known for its greenery. Did
you know? I didn't until recently. Okay.
But what else is it also represents
growth. Okay. So, did you know Wanga
Maju is the most dense parliamentary
constituency in Malaysia?
>> Let me show you some stats. Okay,
it has 215,000 people in 16 square
kilometers, number one in Malaysia.
Around 50% of these people are less than
30 years old. 20% are fresh graduates.
Clankberry average is 15. Property
prices here are 20% lower than Clankbury
average. and DBKL has designated it for
development to become the first carbon
neutral town in KL. So needless to say
the potential for Wanga Maju Gigi's
ministry to Maju in the future is
obvious. Okay. Yeah. So that is Wang
Maju Gi. Our vision for it is um let me
hit you with another did you know. Did
you know what Wangam means? Wangsa
actually means royal house.
So we want to be the royal house of God
and maju with our godliness there.
>> Okay. Okay.
And also strategically speaking, right,
like like AJ mentioned earlier, we got
TMD.
>> So there's 30,000 students there. And if
you didn't know, it's kind of a big deal
for those of us who
so strategically we're probably going to
partner with them and also stop to try
and plant many godly trees there. Okay?
So you can pray for us uh to be big,
sturdy, strong trees in this area to
provide shelter, shade, and nutrients
and food to the people there. And also
since I am a new leader with an existing
group, pray that we'll be able to get up
to speed quickly so that we can be ready
to be doing good works in the part of
camp that God has set us in. Thank you.
>> Okay. Very good. Thank you.
>> Okay, we have two more groups and we
have Jason representing TTDI.
>> Okay. Hello everyone. Uh I'm Jason. Most
of you may not know me because uh I
attend the PM gathering, but okay, I'm
here. So uh a bit about TTDI. Uh
actually who who don't know TTDI?
Everyone knows TTDI, right? But if you
don't know TTDI, if you you you've been
to One Utama, correct? The mall. You
look through the highway and then you
see the houses opposite. Those are TTDI.
Okay. Those those that area is TTDI. So
TTDI is known for being very affluent.
Uh there are a lot of big houses,
expensive houses, and also cool cafes.
Okay. So yeah. Right. Right. Agree.
Right. Yes. Okay. You all know. Okay.
Now, surely you ask, right, Jason, why
you dress like that? You look neither
affluent or like going to a cafe. Okay.
TDDI is famous for another thing.
>> Hiking to wear.
Yes. Okay. So, uh yes, this is a
picture. All right. Now, uh Oh, yeah.
TDDI is famous for TTDI park which uh a
lot of runners, joggers, hikers go to.
And let me give you a fun fact. This is
the entrance to TTDI park and it's just
opposite of the house where we are
gathering for GG.
>> Oh, so that means um you know where we
are going to GGT, right? As a GG most of
the time. Okay. That's why I'm dressed
like this to remind uh you all that if
you ever have hiking friends, you know
where to send them to. Okay. Yeah. Uh
right. So uh my vision for the GG uh in
TTDI there are about 20,000 people there
and there's only one GG. Okay, there's
only one GG. Enough or not?
>> Not enough, right? Definitely not
enough. Okay, so my vision is this GG
will not be the only GG there for a long
time. Okay, hopefully this is the first
of many GG's. That means as a GG we need
to start training leaders from among the
members and hopefully uh we will expand
into TTDI and to do the Lord's work
there. Okay. Yeah. So do keep us in
prayer. What can you pray for? Uh number
one you can pray for me because this is
my I think I'm I'm one of the greenest
leader here right? Uh yeah this is my
Yeah. Yeah. Okay. Like compared with
Jerome Compared with Jerome, right? This
is my first uh uh first uh how say
appointment as a GG leader.
>> This is my first uh time leading GG
alone by myself. Okay. So uh yeah pray
that uh I can model godly leadership and
servantthood to my Gigi members right so
that hopefully they grow together with
me not in size but in godliness. Uh and
then uh second thing is uh to pray for
the Gigi. Our GG is relatively small. We
have only two couples, two aunties, and
one ironic. Okay. So, so there's only
seven of us, okay? But it it's a small
GG, but we don't want to just be a GG of
small mindset. Okay? We don't want to
just do small things. Okay? Hopefully,
we will do even better than what we used
to do in Filio Damasara where we split
form. Okay? And yeah, that keep us in
prayer for that. Right. Thank you so
much. Oh, sorry. I have one more thing
to say. Uh those of you who are friends
in TTDI, last time you cannot send them
to TTDI GG. Now finally you can say,
"Hey, there's a Gigi in your
neighborhood. Would you like to join
them or not?" Okay, so thank you so
much.
>> Okay, Mom Gigi.
>> Hi everyone. My name is Joy and I run
the Mom's Gigi. So we've been around for
the past 16 years and as God has
actually provided growth to this church,
so our moms GG has grown. We are famous
for moms who love the word over there
and in crash and lots of kids.
Yeah. So it started with Friday group
and as God again has brought lots of
marriages, lots of babies, uh we've had
to expand and therefore Tuesday group is
something that has been planted and
that's a group that Robin and I um are
leading. That's that's what was taken
just this week. And then uh Suen and Jen
are the new leaders for the Friday
group. So we are comprised of uh moms
who are stay at home and uh those who
are also working outside as well and all
that juggling that goes in between. So
this is our prayer that uh our group
will grow. Oh sorry actually Suen's
covering the prayer a bit. Um yeah that
we will reach out to uh the demographics
that comprise of these uh moms and that
we will grow in maturity in order to be
uh spiritual moms uh to all the rest of
the church. Um sorry sir and I took
>> yeah so so please pray for both groups
as well that amidst uh the busyiness of
family life and work as well especially
for the working moms is really tiring
sometimes um that we would still be on
mission and be concerned for the growth
of the church. Um please pray that all
the moms uh will actually model
godliness um at home to their children
and in their marriages and also um that
we would be spiritual mothers to the
younger ladies in church in the way that
we minister God's word to them and also
open up our homes and our lives to them.
Thank you.
>> Thank you. So there you have it. Yeah.
Now, I hope that we have all improved a
little bit in our knowledge of the
geography of the Clang Valley, but even
more that we have been encouraged by
seeing the fruit of God's work in and
amongst us, both growth in maturity as
well as in number. Now, one of the ways
that we can celebrate this also is with
this journal.
Okay, this is the CRC 2026 journal and
the cover is designed to show the spread
of the gospel in the Clang Valley. All
right, so the lights there in the
darkness spreading and this is our
growth group map. Right? So if you want
to celebrate the growth of these groups,
then this is one of the ways you can do
this. It includes the calendar for CRC
for the year as well as events by
ministries that we support. So, if you'd
like to look at a physical copy of this,
you can look for Rebecca or Ronnie here
this morning, or you can buy one online
at crc.com.mmy/
merchandise. We're now going to commit
our work to the Lord in prayer, asking
that he would supply our needs to
fulfill our ministry right here in the
Kang Valley where he has placed us. Joy
is going to lead us in prayer.
I forgot to mention earlier that if you
do know any moms who are working from
home or working outside, please invite
them to mom. So now we have two groups
Tuesday morning and Friday night. Thank
you. Uh let's go to God uh in prayer for
all the exciting things that are
happening.
Our God and heavenly father, you are our
king who reigns and rules over this
world and our lives. You make nations
great and destroy them. You enlarge
nations and lead them away. To you
belong all wisdom, glory, power, and
praise. We do not deserve your abiding
presence with us, Lord, but yet thank
you for your son's atoning death so that
we can be your people.
Please forgive us for our sin and cause
us to repent daily before your throne.
and to tremble at your word. Act and
fulfill your will in us for our good and
your glory.
Lord, as you began your good work in us
18 years ago, please continue to lead
and guide us by your powerful word. And
as we begin the book of Numbers, may we
see your sovereign, wise, and righteous
rule over your people, causing us not to
rely on our strength, but on you. Give
wisdom to Pastor Jer Rome, the
apprentices, and David as they preach
and teach us.
Rule over us by your word, oh God and
king, and grant us a humble heart that
fears you and lives in wholehearted
devotion and obedience.
Cut our hearts, Lord, when we sit under
your word and sanctify us by your truth,
so that we will be an army strengthened
to do your will.
God, you alone determine the times and
places where we live. And so, thank you
for the five new Gigi plants across the
Clank Valley. Thank you for raising up
new leaders to lead your people.
Direct their hearts to love your word
and so model godliness and therefore
rightly handle your word of truth.
Mature every member in that group in
those groups in your word and then their
love for each other.
May they also persevere in reaching out
to their new community and so mission
where you have placed them. For the moms
in the two groups, may we be intentional
in building relationships with other
moms who work at home and outside.
And while we struggle to juggle juggle
many responsibilities, remind us of the
task before us and that your grace has
saved us so that we can continue to be
your faithful servants.
Father, thank you for the seven
newcomers you brought to the Lucy Lucy
last Friday. Thank you that they got to
hear the gospel.
Please open their hearts and minds so
that they would hear and accept your
word. Cause genuine repentance in their
hearts and that they would trust in your
son. Give wisdom to Penny as she leads
and points them to you and cause new
life to grow in them.
We also pray for ourselves that as uh we
brought friends for Christmas that we
will be diligent in following them up.
Remind all of us of the urgency of your
son's return so that we will make the
most of every opportunity and be zealous
to make disciples for your sake.
Lord, thank you for helping us to find a
new home where we can continue the work
of the kingdom
as you have added people into our midst.
Please Lord, provide us the funds we
need in order that we might reach the
deadline at the end of this month. May
every one of us be engaged in raising
funds for our church. And may you direct
us to people who will be generous and
supportive to your work here.
We appeal Lord that you please move the
hearts of those who are in charge of our
bank loan so that they would approve our
application.
Be glorified in all of this we pray.
And lastly, we thank you for the
upcoming Fellow Workers Conference.
We're grateful, Lord, that your truth
endures throughout all time and that
faithful men have stood firm in the
faith. May we learn from the reformers
in the past and like them be shaped in
our lives by your word.
Grant wisdom to your servants Bradley
Green and Robin as they prepare their
talks and that we as fellow workers as
we come that we would be built up and
zealous to fulfill the ministry you've
given to us. Please draw many men and
women from churches in Clang Valley and
beyond to see the urgency of this task.
May we be bold, Lord, in our gospel
proclamation.
Father, may your kingdom come and your
will be done on earth as it is in
heaven. We humbly ask for all this in
Jesus name. Amen.
Good morning church.
Uh our New Testament reading is taken
from 1 Corinthians chapter 10 to 11:1.
This passage is incredibly helpful
because the Apostle Paul shows us how to
read Old Testament books like Numbers
and to connect the book to our lives
today. In First Corinthians, Paul uses
numbers to point out the kind of people
God expects Israel to be is no different
from what God expects from his churches
today.
Paul urges the Corinthians to see that
what happened to Israel in the
wilderness was a warning for all of
God's people. He wants us that being
part of the church is more than just
going through the motions because even
their forefathers have fallen away
because of unbelief. So instead, what
God wants is a heart that remains
faithful to Christ, our true rock in the
wilderness. If you need, if you do not
have a Bible, please raise your hands
and your ushers will hand you one.
1 Corinthians chapter 10. For I do not
want you to be unaware, brothers, that
our fathers were all under the cloud,
and all passed through the sea, and all
were baptized into Moses in the cloud
and in the sea, and all ate the same
spiritual food, and all drank the same
spiritual drink. For they drank from the
spiritual rock that followed them, and
the rock was Christ. Nevertheless, with
most of them, God was not pleased, for
they were overthrown in the wilderness.
Now these things took place as examples
for us, that we might not desire evil as
they did. Do not be idolattors as some
of them were, as it is written, the
people sat down to eat and drink and
rose up to play. We must not indulge in
sexual immorality as some of them did
and 23,000 fell in a single day. We must
not put Christ to the test as some of
them did and were destroyed by serpents,
nor grumble as some of them did and were
destroyed by the destroyer.
Now these things happened to them as an
example, but they were written down for
our instruction on whom the end of ages
has come.
Therefore, let anyone who thinks that he
stands take heed lest he fall. No
temptation has overtaken you that is not
common to man. God is faithful and he
will not let you be tempted beyond your
ability. But with the temptation, he
will also provide the way of escape that
you may be able to endure it. Therefore,
my beloved, flee from idolatry.
I speak as to sensible people. Judge for
yourselves what I say. The cup of
blessing that we bless, is it not a
participation in the blood of Christ?
The bread that we break? Is it not a
participation in the body of Christ?
Because there is one bread. We who are
many are one body. For we all partake of
that one bread.
Consider the people of Israel. Are not
those who eat the sacrifices
participants in the altar? What do I
imply then? That food offered to idols
is anything or that an idol is anything?
No, I imply that what pagans sacrifice
they offer to demons and not to God. I
do not want you to be participants with
demons. You cannot drink of the cup of
the Lord and the cup of demons. You
cannot partake of the table of the Lord
and the table of demons. Shall we
provoke the Lord to jealousy?
Are we stronger than he?
All things are lawful, but not all
things are helpful. All things are
lawful, but not all things build up. Let
no one seek his own good, but the good
of his neighbor.
Eat whatever is sold in a meat market
without raising any questions on a
ground of conscience. For the earth is
the Lord's and the fullness thereof.
If one of the unbelievers invites you to
dinner and you are disposed to go, eat
whatever is said before you without
raising any questions on the ground of
conscience. But if someone says to you,
"This has been offered in sacrifice,"
then do not eat it for the sake of the
one who informed you and for the sake of
conscience. I do not mean your
conscience, but his. For why should my
liberty be determined by someone else's
conscience? If I partake with
thankfulness, why am I denounced because
of that for which I give thanks? So
whether you eat or drink or whatever you
do, do all to the glory of God. Give no
offense to Jews or to Greeks or to the
church of God, just as I try to please
everyone in everything I do, not seeking
my own advantage, but that of many that
they may be saved. Be imitators of me as
I am of Christ. This is the word of the
Lord.
Now, we've just seen how the Apostle
Paul used the Old Testament in pastoring
the Corinthian church. Given his
statement in 10:6, please take some time
to work with the person next to you. How
should we treat Old Testament books like
numbers?
So think about the cross tonight is
where the man called Jesus died. My eyes
fixed on that rugged tree where Jesus
died in agony.
Thank you.
When was the time we prayed with
humility?
When we feared the Lord because we saw
his glory.
When we worshiped him for what he could
give, but we praised our
crushed by our sin because he is holy.
The church
must be born.
Have we made a god we never fear cuz
he's like me friendly
who loves us more than his glory shows
no anger from above. Have we loved
Christ who only lived to show me one way
of life am
who only came to die for you as an
expression of his love. Tell me what's
this God our hands
have made.
This is not the God.
When was the time when Christians
shouted?
Well, Jesus is Lord.
And his words
and his teachings were not
the gospel he preached and the kingdom
he brings in
the church today must be
Have we made a god we'd never fear cuz
he's like more friendly
who loves us more than his own glory
shows no anger from above. Have we loved
the Christ who only lived to show me one
way of life among the many who only came
to die for you as an expression of his
love. Tell me was this God our hands
have made.
This is what the God
gave.
Tell me, was this God he loved and
obeyed?
This is not the God his word
displayed.
When was the time we saw the crosses
unjust?
Why
should
our faith reject
me? When we suffered with joy and hope
we could give up our lives because
Christ meant everything.
But where snow
is gone?
The church today must be worn.
We must go.
>> Morning church. Hello again. Sorry to
interrupt your discussion.
Uh would you please stand? Thank you.
Um I think I personally wouldn't
appreciate the Old Testament a lot if um
if we didn't go through the books,
right? I would fail to see uh God's word
truly dwelling in me. So let me
encourage you that God can only be truly
understood if you dwell richly in his
word and only then will you appreciate
God's grace for you and behold his
wondrous mystery who is Christ. So let
us sing.
Come behold the wondrous mystery in the
dawning
of the king.
He the theme of heaven's praises.
Rolled in frail humanity.
In our longing,
in our darkness,
now the light of life has come.
Look to Christ who call descended.
Took our flesh to ransom.
Come behold the wondous mystery. He's
the perfect son of man.
In his living,
in his suffering,
never trace nor stain no sin.
See the true and better Adam
come to save the hell man.
Christ the great and sure fulfillment
of the law. In him we stand.
Come behold a wondrous mystery. Christ
the Lord up upon the tree
in the state of sinners
the lamb in victory.
See the prize of our redemption.
See the father's
men of glory
sons to glory.
Praise God,
love untold.
Come behold the wondous mystery sing by
death of the God of life.
But no grave could ever have restrain
him. Praise the Lord. He is alive.
What a forest
of deliverance.
How unwavering
our hope
in power
resurrected
as we will be when he comes.
What a foreign
deliverance.
How unwavering
our hope.
Christ in power,
resurrected
as we will be when he comes.
>> Church, as we all learned last year in
Leviticus, I saw how I was just like the
Israelites. so unholy and dead in my
sins,
unable to approach God's holiness.
But it is only in Christ who died on the
cross and rose again that we can all now
live for him. So let us all fight hard
for God's glory as we go through numbers
together. Let's sing in Christ alone.
I sing in Christ the Lord my hope is
found.
He is my light, my strength, my song.
This corner store, this solid ground
firm through the fiercest drought in
stone. What has of love but death of
peace? When fears are still, when
striving cease, my comfort,
my all in love.
Here in the love of Christ I stand
in Christ the Lord who took on flesh.
Fullness of God in helpless
grace
gift of love and righteousness.
Scorned by the ones he came to save.
Till on that cross as Jesus died, the
wrath of God was satisfied.
For every sin
on him was laid.
Here in the death of Christ I am
his body l
of the world by darkness
flame then bursting
in glorious
I'm from the king. He rose again.
And as he stands in victory,
his curse has lost his victory on me.
And as he stands in victory,
his curse has lost his victory on me.
For I am his and he is mine.
The blood of the precious blood
of Christ.
No fear in death.
This is the power of Christ in me. From
life was cry to final breath.
And Jesus will my destiny.
No power of hell. No scheme of hell can
ever
me from his hand. No power of hell. know
him again
from his head till he resold
here in the power of Christ our
Let this next song be a prayer for God's
word to dwell richly in us and let God's
word speak to us and change us to be
more like him. So when you sing, think
of the person that you need to talk to
later and encourage them. So let us
sing.
As we gather, come and teach us.
Spirit, come and speak to today.
You delight to lead and guide us.
It's your word that lights the way.
So come awaken our hearts,
illuminate our minds,
magnify Jesus
Christ.
Come renewing our faith,
changing our lives
with your words
of life.
together.
>> Let your truth sink deep within us.
Let the foolish
learn your ways.
We are often prone to wonder
as we give. May we be changed.
So come awaken our hearts,
illuminate our minds,
magnify Jesus
Christ.
Come renewing our faith,
changing our lives
with your words.
Awaken our hearts.
Illuminate our minds.
Magnify Jesus
Christ.
Come renewing our faith.
changing our lives
with your words
of life.
>> We need to see you. We need to hear you.
We want to know you. Word of life.
We need to see you. We need to hear you.
We want to know you. Word of life.
We need to see you. We need to hear you.
We want to know you.
Word of life.
We need to see you. We need to hear you.
We want to know you. Word of life.
So come awaken our hearts.
Illumin our minds.
Magnify Jesus
Christ.
Come. Renewing our faith.
changing our lives
with your words
of life.
>> God's word is sharper than any sword on
earth. So let it pierce you. Let it
pierce your thoughts and shape us to be
his image. Please be seated.
Morning
church. Uh we'll now be reading from
Numbers chapter 1. Uh you need a
physical Bible, you don't have it, just
raise your hands and uh one of the
ushers will hand it over to you.
Uh if you were here at the beginning of
um our gathering, you would have heard a
kind of summary, a kind of overview from
uh Psalm 106. If if you're not there,
I'll just give a quick overview of uh
what has led up to numbers.
So if you remember in Exodus 32, there
was the incident of the golden calf
uh which after which God was pretty much
threatening to reject his people. And
then uh Moses uh interceded
um and as a result of that uh we have
the temple uh which is how God's
presence could be with them without his
holiness consuming uh the people. So on
the temple of course we have the book of
Leviticus uh by which the people can
somewhat be acceptable to God.
And um in numbers
I mean later I'm going to read a long
list of names and numbers which might
mean nothing to all of us. Um but in
numbers we have uh the people getting
into some kind of army formation which
Jerome will uh speak more about. Uh what
I just want to call out is that some of
you might know that uh taking a census,
counting the number of people is
something that's generally forbidden um
in the Old Testament because uh the king
is not supposed to simply take God's
people to war or to consider
war in terms of Israelite army strength
because God is the one who fights for
them. which is why I suppose taking a
census here is
it's a kind of exception. Uh it calls
for our attention as to why God is doing
this and you'll later see that uh God is
speaking about his people um as an army.
Um you'll
if you're familiar with the Old
Testament I suppose you you'll know that
they are on their way to the promised
land. they will have to uh make war on
the way. But you'll find that the I
suppose the war that involves flesh and
blood is actually the much simpler part
because if you know Jericho is like
trumpet circling around and God fights
for them anyway. Uh the much more
difficult war is the spiritual warfare
uh that is within.
Uh so let me uh read from chapter 1
verse one onwards.
The Lord spoke to Moses in the
wilderness of Si in the tent of meeting
on the first day of the second month in
the second year after they had come out
of the land of Egypt, saying, "Take a
census of all the congregation of the
people of Israel, by clans, by father's
houses, according to the number of
names, every male, head by head, from 20
years old and upward, all in Israel who
are able to go to war. You and Aaron
shall list them company by company. And
there shall be with you a man from each
tribe, each man being the head of the
house of his fathers.
And these are the names of the men who
shall assist you. from Reuben, Elizar,
the son of Shedur. From Simeon, Shalom,
the son of Zurishai.
From Judah, Nashon the son of Aminadab.
From Isachar, Nathaniel the son of Zuir.
From Zebulun, Eliab the son of Helen.
from the sons of Joseph from Ephraim,
Elishama the son of Amihood and from
Manasseh Gamal the son of Perazor
from Benjamin Abidan the son of Gideon
from Dan Ahazer the son of Amishai from
Asher Pegel the son of Aran from Gad
Alasaf the son of Duel from Napali Ahira
the son of Anan
These were the ones chosen from the
congregation, the chiefs of their
ancestral tribes, the heads of the clans
of Israel.
Moses and Aaron took these men who had
been named. And on the first day of the
second month, they assembled the whole
congregation together, who registered
themselves by clans, by father's houses,
according to the number of names from 20
years old and upward, head by head, as
the Lord commanded Moses. So he listed
them in the wilderness of Si.
The people of Reuben, Israel's
firstborn, their generations, by their
clans, by their father's houses,
according to the number of names, head
by head, every male from 20 years old
and upward, all who were able to go to
war, those listed of the tribe of Reuben
were 46,500.
of the people of Simeon, the
generations, by their clans, by their
father's houses, those of them who were
listed according to the number of names
head by head, every male from 20 years
old and upward, all who were able to go
to war, those listed of the tribe of
Simeon were 59,300.
of the people of Gad, their generations,
by their clans, by their father's
houses, according to the number of the
names, from 20 years old and upward, all
who were able to go to war. Those listed
of the tribe of Gad were 45,650.
of the tribe of Judah, their
generations, by their clans, by their
father's houses according to the number
of names from 20 years old and upward,
every man able to go to war, those
listed of the tribe of Judah was 74,600.
of the people of Issachar, their
generations, by their clans, by their
father's houses, according to the number
of names from 20 years old and upward,
every man able to go to war, those
listed of the tribe of Issachar were
54,400.
of the people of Zebulun, their
generations, by their clans, by their
father's houses. According to the number
of names, from 20 years old and upward,
every man able to go to war, those
listed of the tribe of Zebulun were
57,400.
of the people of Joseph, namely of the
people of Ephraim, their generations, by
their clans, by their father's houses,
according to the number of names, from
20 years old and upward, every man able
to go to war, those listed of the tribe
of Ephraim were 40,500.
of the people of Manasseh, their
generations, by their clans, by their
father's houses. According to the number
of names, from 20 years old and upward,
every man able to go to war, those
listed of the tribe of Manasseh were
32,200.
of the people of Benjamin, their
generations, by their clans, by their
father's houses, according to the number
of names, from 20 years old and upward,
every man able to go to war. Those
listed of the tribe of Benjamin were
35,400.
of the people of Dan, their generations,
by their clans, by their father's
houses, according to the number of names
from 20 years old and upward, every man
able to go to war, those listed of the
tribe of Dan were 62,700.
of the people of Asher, their
generations, by their clans, by their
father's houses, according to the number
of names, from 20 years old and upward,
every man able to go to war. Those
listed of the tribe of Asher were
41,500.
of the people of Naphali, their
generations, by their clans, by their
father's houses, according to the number
of names from 20 years old and upward,
every man able to go to war. Those
listed of the tribe of Napali were
53,400.
These are those who were listed, whom
Moses and Aaron listed with the help of
the chiefs of Israel, 12 men, each
representing his father's house. So all
those listed of the people of Israel by
their father's houses from 20 years old
and upward, every man able to go to war
in Israel, all those listed were 63,550.
But the Levites were not listed along
with them by their ancestral tribe. For
the Lord spoke to Moses, saying, "Only
the tribe of Levi you shall not list,
and you shall not take a census of them
among the people of Israel, but appoint
the Levites over the tabernacle of the
testimony, and over all its furnishings,
and over all that belongs to it. They
are to carry the tabernacle and all its
furnishings. And they shall take care of
it, and shall camp around the
tabernacle.
When the tabernacle is to set out, the
Levites shall take it down. And when the
tabernacle is to be pitched, the Levites
shall set it up. And if any outsider
comes near, he shall be put to death.
The people of Israel shall pitch their
tents by their companies, each man in
his own camp, and each man by his own
standard. But the Levites shall camp
around the tabernacle of the testimony,
so that there are there may be no wrath
on the congregation of the people of
Israel. And the Levites shall keep guard
over the tabernacle of the testimony.
Thus did the people of Israel. They did
according to all that the Lord commanded
Moses.
The Lord spoke to Moses and Aaron,
saying, "The people of Israel shall camp
each by his own standard with the
banners of their father's houses. They
shall camp facing the tent of meeting on
every side." This is the word of the
Lord.
Uh we'll now have Pastor Jerome up to
preach to us God's word.
Good morning, church. It's good to be
back on the pulpit. It's been um a long
time since Leviticus and uh I'm aware
that there are many new faces uh new new
folks joining us today. So, welcome to
our church. I am Pastor Jerome. I'm one
of the pastors here. Um the the main
pastor uh is Pastor Robin, and you can
hear from him uh once we're done with
the book of Numbers as we go to our New
Testament series. So, welcome to our
series on the book of Numbers.
I'm glad you're excited.
We're going to continue our study of the
Pentetuk, the first five books of the
Bible. And if you're new, I just want to
say uh all our sermons are available
online. So, you can go to our website to
watch our previous sermons uh to keep
up. Our church is committed to go
through the Bible. So, we we hope to
cover every single passage. Well, at
least that's uh Pastor Robin's goal for
for his pulpit ministry. I hope to at
some point as well, but we'll see. Okay.
between the two of us who can do what,
you know, uh but Lord willing, God will
bless us and we're able to go through
all of the Bible. Uh you're here today
for the overview sermon on the book of
Numbers. And if you're new, it's a good
Sunday to join us. Uh we're starting a
new series. And if you're looking to
take the Bible seriously, uh to be part
of a church that will go through the
Bible systematically, you're you're in a
good place. Okay? Okay. So, I hope today
will help you and in the upcoming weeks
uh you will grow deeper into God's word.
So, let me pray. Ask God to help us and
uh we'll jump straight into our sermon
for today.
Lord, every word that you have said to
us is precious.
Every word confronts us with the reality
of who you are and who we are.
And
from what we see in the way you have
interacted with our ancestors in the
past, previous generations of people who
have followed you, you have taught us so
much, oh Lord, about what it means to be
chosen, to be redeemed, to be called
to serve you. And so we pray that
as a church
as we go through the book of numbers
that we will have a more glorious vision
of the church
and our calling
and what you have given us to do in this
world.
to be your people who will raise the
banner of Christ proudly
to have courage
to speak the gospel to to live boldly
for that gospel
and so Lord we pray that to that end we
we ask for your blessing as we study the
scriptures together so be with us this
morning oh Lord in Jesus name we pray
amen
okay I hope you have an outline and if
you do we're at the first section Couple
of things I want to say about the book
of numbers before we get into um the
material itself.
Now, how many of you have heard a sermon
series on the book of numbers before in
your life outside CRC?
Okay.
Um the book of numbers is a neglected
book among Christians like the book of
Leviticus.
Okay. If you to go online to find
sermons on Leviticus and Numbers, quite
rare. And if you think about it, perhaps
all the books of the Pentitute are
somewhat neglected except maybe for
certain favorite portions of Genesis, uh
certain favorite portions of Exodus and
maybe the Ten Commandments. And as
churches of God, we have to ask
ourselves if we actually have any plans
or not to cover the pentitute at least
once in our life together as God's
people. Because if you think about it,
if if this is the first five books of
the Bible, dependent to you, how can we
as a church not cover it?
Doesn't matter when you do it. You maybe
do it at your 17 year, 18 year or 50th
year, but at some point
will you do it? Our Lord Jesus himself
makes the point in Luke 24 that the law
of Moses points to him. And when Jesus
speaks about the law of Moses, he is
speaking about the first five books of
the Bible. So we mustn't think that the
first five books of the Bible are
irrelevant to our understanding of Jesus
and the gospel. They point to him. And
so much of the entire Bible depends on
our knowledge of these books. So church,
for those of you who have been with us,
you've been here for Genesis, Exodus,
Leviticus, I hope you've already seen
how foundational those books are to our
understanding of the gospel and the
Bible. Okay, for those of you who did
not and you really want to, you can go
online. Okay. Now, technically,
uh, the book of Numbers is the last book
in the Pentituke that we're covering in
CRC. Did you know that we've already
covered Deuteronomy before?
Some of you are wondering where. Well,
look at the ceiling. It's somewhere
there. Okay, the evidence is there.
Okay, where is it? Actually,
there. There. Moses with arms raised.
There you go. Wow, that's really early
on. So, we have already did Deuteronomy,
so we're actually covering the last book
in the pentitute. So, she's like, "Oh,
man." But, um, I think I hear Pastor
Robin might want to do Deuteronomy
again. So, we'll see. We don't know.
Okay. Uh, if you're new, there's so much
to catch up on. Actually, if you're
interested to learn the Bible, and I
encourage you to do so, okay? You won't
be wasting any time if you give time to
studying the pentitude.
Now, most people only know the famous
stories in numbers. As a Christian, you
would have heard of the story of the
spies. Yes. And how Israel refused to
enter the land. only two spies were
allowed. And that's why many Christian
boys were named Caleb and Joshua.
Uh, and they were granted the privilege
to enter the land because they trusted
the Lord to help them conquer Canaan.
And then there's that famous story of
Balam's donkey. Okay, everybody loves
donkey story and how God spoke through
an animal to confront a pagan sorcerer
on his journey to curse the people of
Israel. So these are the two most famous
stories in the book of Numbers.
Unfortunately, the rest of the material
is largely not taught, especially the
ones with all the laws. Okay? People
really don't like them. Uh for a book
with a title like numbers, people hardly
know anything about the meaning of the
numbers in the book. Many people assume
that once they say numbers, I'm not good
at mathematics. Okay, I give up already.
Okay, the book of numbers is the
mathematical whatever whatever I give
up. Well, actually, if you just look at
the book of Numbers, uh there's chapter
1, chapter 2, chapter 3, and then maybe
26, and that's it. That's all the
numbers that you'll see in the book.
Okay? There there's a lot of other
material in the book of Numbers. Now,
you might wonder why uh pastors don't
teach the book of Numbers. I mean, there
are many reasons for why. Um but regards
to seminary, let me bring this up,
right? Even in seminaries, uh you won't
necessarily even have a class on the
book of numbers. Did you know that you
might have one class? So if you thought
that your pastor might know a lot more
than you, he has one class worth more of
knowledge than you maybe or maybe one
extra chapter or a little book or unless
he did a special elective in seminary
and that is if it was offered in
seminary. Um, your pastor might not be
taught the book of Numbers at seminary.
Okay, but they always say like, you
know, seminary, you're not meant to
learn everything. We're meant to give
you the tools.
Okay, I have a lot to say about that,
but never mind. So, at the end of
seminary, many pastors actually have a
very elementary knowledge of the book.
They would have to study the book of
Numbers postseminary as they are to
preach in the church. So in my setting,
this is the this is I'm actually really
grateful every time when I get to
preach, as much as it is um um uh
weighty on the soul, I'm grateful that
that I have the opportunity to to give a
lot of time to study some of these
books.
And so the book of Numbers is actually a
very important one. Now, the other
preachers of this series and myself, um,
well, I hope they see it the same way as
I do, that we are actually very blessed
to do this. Okay? So, we're going to do
this together as a church as we go
through the book of Numbers. If you
really believe that every book of the
Bible is inspired by God, you would want
to listen to a sermon series on every
book of the Bible. Yes. No. Okay. You
may come from a church environment where
you're listening to topics. Nothing
wrong with topical preaching, but we
believe that that shouldn't be your main
diet. Your main diet as a Christian
should be a careful study of every book
in the Bible to learn every verse and
chapter in its context. And once you go
through a book of the Bible taught well
once in your life, I think you will be
sold that that is the better way, a
better diet to have as a Christian.
Okay. So, here we are together studying
the book of Numbers. And those of you
who studied the book of Leviticus
together are with us, I hope you have
seen how crucial it was to understand
the book of Leviticus. How foundational
it was to understand the priesthood of
Christ, his atoning sacrifice. What it
means when the New Testament used
language like you have access into the
holy of holies, into the presence of
God. That is all from the book of
Leviticus.
The book of numbers,
I hope, will have a similar impact on
your life, on your understanding of the
gospel, the church, the world, and God's
purpose in it. If you have the spirit,
and if you study the scriptures
intentionally, you will be changed for
the better. I I believe that. Do you
believe that?
As you give your time and attention to
the study of God's word, God will teach
you. He will change your heart.
So let's go right in now, okay, to the
book of numbers. The first thing that
you must understand about this book that
it is the fourth book of the pentitute,
which means that you must have some
prior knowledge and understanding of the
pentitute from Genesis, Exodus, and
Leviticus. And so as an overview sermon,
I'm going to pull various things to help
you and to guide you. Okay? But let's
look at the first two verses in chapter
one. The book of numbers starts out by
identifying the people of Israel as
those who came out of Egypt and entered
into a covenant with the Lord God at
Mount Si. Now, everything you need to
know about the context for the book of
Numbers is in the first verse. Okay? So,
the first few phrase itself, I I'll I'll
expound on this more next week, but just
to make the point, God spoke to Moses.
This tells us that the contents of this
book are theological. It's revelation
from God. God's word delivered to his
people through his chosen mediator,
Moses. Now, over and over again in the
pentitute, you will see this phrase. And
the Lord spoke to Moses.
And then God spoke to Moses in the
wilderness of Si. I'll come to that
soon. In the tent of meeting. Now that
is significant.
The preposition in there is significant
because previously when God spoke to
Moses, he spoke to Moses from the tent
of meeting. But now Moses speaks God
speaks to Moses in the tent. A reality
that was made possible because of what
happened in the book of Leviticus.
God made a point that you cannot come
near me unless you have a representative
priesthood. Unless you have an atoning
sacrifice for your sins and then you may
come in my presence. And this is what we
have attentive of meeting. And the
tabernacle that that that tabernacling
reality has been the main focus of the
pentitute since the second half of
Exodus. I know many of you know the
prince of Egypt story, okay? The 10
plagues and all that. But nobody knows
what happens after that. Correct? Just
check your brain. It's like actually
what happened after that? Huh? Yeah. Why
after that?
Well, that's half of Exodus and that's
Israel traveling to Mount Si receiving
revelation from God. Revelation that God
speaks through Moses. So, understanding
this tabernacle reality of God's
presence among the Israelites is key to
understanding this covenant relationship
that God establishes with his people.
And as you will see in the first section
of Numbers, we're talking chapters 1 all
the way to 10. Numbers has three major
sections. In the first section which
we'll look at,
God is continuing his teaching at Si.
Okay. So, the Israelites have not moved
yet from Sinai. The setting of the
wilderness of Si as verse one says,
uh, sorry, that's the setting for them.
Okay. Only in chapter 10 do we see the
people of Israel moving towards the
promised land. So in terms of the flow
of the story, we're not going to make
any movement until chapter 10. Okay? So
for the first 10 chapters, we basically
have to listen listen to what God is
teaching his people. No traveling, no
walking, no action. Okay? Usually we all
love stories because of all the action,
right? Well, try to enjoy the parts
where people are talking. You know who
who really loves watching movies where
there's a lot of dialogue.
Okay? And then okay, I only mean Lii the
lawyer. Okay. And Hongay lii and Hongay.
Oh man the
sorry those of you who know those guys
who are like ah that's why I don't like
okay can we all like together okay we
all like together. Okay so before they
can continue their journey here's why
it's so important for them to listen
because they must understand what God is
teaching them about who they are and
what they must do. Now there I entice
you. When people talk about you in front
of you, you like or not all the good
ones, all the good stuff about you.
You're so handsome. You're so wonderful.
You're so smart. You like right. You
like right. Correct. There. There.
There. Okay. There. Numbers 1 to 10. God
is talking to them about them. About the
church being the church. And in so
doing, of course, he's talking about
himself and what he's doing through
them. But here he is telling them what
it means for them to be them.
By the end of Numbers, the people of
Israel are on the plains of Moab on the
border of Canaan. So, you have to have
maps. Um, those of you, you know, who
invested in ESV study Bibles, you can
finally, you know, uh, get your money's
worth. Please look at the map, okay?
Look at the distance that they have to
travel. Mount Si, somewhere at the south
of that Sinai region, and they travel
all the way to the top uh of Kadesh
Barnea. Okay, that's that's a very
important stopping point because that's
at the border of Canaan and that will be
significant when we come to the spy
story that everybody likes in chapter 13
and chapter 14. But then by the end of
the book of numbers, they go further up
north to Moab. Okay. Now, isn't it
interesting because
the whole point of their movement is to
enter into Canaan, but any of you took a
trip where you just need to drive
straight. Okay, just drive straight. But
you then you drive to the other entry
point. You know what I mean? You don't
enter. You just like take a long detour
to the other site, another entry point.
What's going on?
And what could have taken them weeks or
months took them 40 years.
40 years. And we know it's because they
actually refused to enter the land of
Canaan at Kardesh Barnea.
God judged that rebellious generation
with death. So for 40 years, they waited
until every single one from the Exodus
generation died.
Okay? The generation that witnessed the
mighty plagues of God in Egypt, every
single one of them died except for a
handful of leaders like Moses, Caleb,
and Joshua
very well died. So the ending of the
book of Numbers doesn't seem much like a
proper ending, you know. Have you seen
the ending? So, if you have your Bibles
open, just just look at the ending,
okay? You'll be very surprised because
there you're looking at a bunch of women
thinking about their marriage.
Opening chapter, census, arrange, go to
war, ending. Hey, uh, got a few bunch of
women here. The father names their
lawful head and then, uh, they need to
get married.
What was it? Some Shakespeare story like
like you know, some romance story. What
was it? on that on that note what's
going on here now when a book ends that
way and you know pro tip when reading
the Bible anytime when you see a very
weird chapter to you right the problem
is is is us right when we read it's not
that it's weird to the Bible it's that
we have to then conform our expectations
to what the Bible is teaching us and
understand the Bible according to its
own terms when you read the final
section of the book of numbers you start
to realize that the daughters of
Zealofahad
are actually key characters. They don't
talk a lot. All you really see is their
concern.
And from their concern, you're meant to
discern the theological
understanding about what they finally uh
get from, so to speak, the whole book of
numbers.
The daughters of Zilafad show that there
is hope,
that there is a future for the people of
God. So given what I just said about
them dying in the wilderness for 40
years, ending with a bunch of women
thinking about marriage and their
inheritance in the land, that is
anticipation,
hope for a future of an inheritance.
We realize that God has not rejected his
people completely.
He will fulfill his promise to bring
them to the land of their forefathers as
his blessed people. Then after numbers
you have the book of Deuteronomy which
consists largely of Moses sermon to the
people before they cross into the border
of Canaan. Then we have the book of
Joshua and finally we see some action.
Okay, where the people finally enter the
land. So something that should have
happened in Numbers 13
only took place in Joshua chapter 1.
So how how do you understand the
material in between that? What are you
meant to learn so that when you come to
chapter one of Joshua,
you are you are ready now to continue
the story of God. We have to consider
what the punishment of their deaths in
the wilderness means.
Yes, we know the goal was for them was
for them to enter the land. You know,
the tagline for this series is bound for
the promised land. Uh, honestly, I had a
hard time thinking about a good tagline
for this series. I had a few other
ideas, but
uh, B for the promised land seems like
the most obvious one. Correct. I had
another one, by his name you shall
swear, you know, but I don't think
people will really understand. Uh, but
anyway, it was tough. The goal seems
like they just have to enter into a
place.
But God does not want us to simply think
that the whole point of this story is
for them to get into a place. No, the
backdrop of their entry into the land
was the Exodus. And not only that, but
also the death of an entire generation
in the wilderness. So, not only must we
think of why and how they entered the
land, we must also think of how and why
they did not enter the land.
Okay, that's very important. They all
died in the wilderness.
And that would be the main context of
Israel's story in the Pentituke, not the
land, the wilderness.
Like I said, they only really entered
the land in Joshua. So the first five
books of the Bible, okay, the people of
Israel, I mean, you have the the the
story of the patriarchs, their entry
into Egypt, and then their slavery in
Egypt, and after that, it's all just
wilderness for a long period of time.
Now, do you know that in the Hebrew
Bible, the name for the book of Numbers
is actually not numbers. Uh we got that
the the name Numbers from the Latin
Vulgate. So, it's just a translation
into the English. But in the Hebrew
Bible, well, they tend to pick a word
from the first sentence of the book.
Okay? And for the book of numbers, the
word that they've chosen was bidbah,
which means in the wilderness.
Okay? So the title for the book of
numbers in the Hebrew is actually in the
wilderness. So we have to understand the
wilderness context.
We will see that in the wilderness,
Israel must learn what it means to have
Yahweh as their God. They must learn to
have his voice as their guidance. They
must be able to recognize his voice and
follow through with his commands through
the preaching of Moses. And if they do
so, they will then grow in holiness as
they respond in obedient faith to God in
the wilderness.
So they're expected to, so to speak,
perform not in a context where the odds
are favorable, where circumstances are
great, where things are comfortable. God
expects them to be an obedient people in
a place of significant hardship and
death.
You understand? Some of us don't like
that. You know, when we go through
something really difficult, how can you
expect me to do that? I'm not good
enough. It's so hard.
If there's one place in the world that
you've been to perform that is super
hard, it is the wilderness. Okay, I'll
soon show you.
All Israel had in the wilderness was
God. Really, if you think about it, in
Exodus 15, immediately after they
crossed the Red Sea, guess what
happened? They entered the land. No,
they didn't. Okay. After they crossed
the Red Sea, God brought them to the
wilderness.
Mo then Moses made Israel set out from
the Red Sea and they went into the
wilderness of Shure for 3 days in the
wilderness and they found no water
rations you know so I they they packed
in a hurry I don't know how much water
they brought and plus if you got
livestock and let's say your son likes
to drink a lot of water you know and
then he also very hungry one okay so no
food no water it's been three days in
the wilderness you guys gone camping
before sometimes When I go camping, I
have to carry water, you know. I go to a
Shell station there, then I buy one box,
you know, uh 12 bottles of 1.5 liter for
our camping trip. This just for over a
camping trip. Imagine being in the
wilderness for god knows how many days
and weeks and months.
So we we realize in verse 25 that that
was intentional.
God brought them there to test them and
he made a clear point to them right from
the outset after you crossed the Red
Sea. He brought you to the highest place
he could possibly bring you and then he
tells you his expectations. Verse 26, if
you will diligently listen to the voice
of the Lord your God and do that which
is right in his eyes and give ear to his
commandments and keep all his statutes.
I will put none of the diseases on you
that I put on the Egyptians, for I am
the Lord your healer.
Here in the wilderness, we see a
paradigm for God's people, which is that
they are meant to be disciplined to
listen to God,
to be a people ever ready to follow his
voice no matter how hard the situation
is.
There's only one way to survive the
wilderness conditions and that is to
follow the voice of God. Now the
wilderness represents the place of death
and judgment. Uh as I said earlier, you
know, it's an environment that is
extremely hostile to life. It is
completely opposite to the promised
land. You know, when you think promised
land, you think abundance, you think
prosperity. You know, if our artist were
to redesign this banner, everything will
be green and blue. But brown, nobody
likes brown, okay? In terms of like
where we want to buy property, you know,
and live, everything green, you know,
green, echo, whatever. Is this
completely non-echo? Okay, so look at
this first picture here. I think this is
uh this is obviously fake. Okay, because
who who took a photo of them walking in
the woods anyway?
But I think it makes the point, okay?
That's why I chose the picture uh just
to kind of give you a sense of what it's
like you know maybe for your holiday
just for like a spiritual pilgrimage
journey you want to go one day right go
to the Sahara desert okay but you must
fully test yourself don't bring any
resources you know just kind of like
feel what it's like just try one day
enough okay suffer enough already now in
terms of climate it was extremely hot
during the days sharply cold at night
and there was you know very little
natural control shade. Those of us
living in Malaysia, right, we always
like to walk in the shadows. You who
like to walk in shadows, okay? That's
the only time in life we can walk in in
people's shadow, okay? And feel
comfortable with it. You know, if I'm
short, I would love to walk with all the
tall people because they are constantly
blocking all the light because prolonged
exposure can mean dehydration. You lose
a lot of water. And then at night,
there's the risk of hypothermia,
especially for the elderly, especially
if you're a child. Just think of all the
mothers, you know, mothers that crash.
Think if you're in this wilderness,
how how you have to hold your baby so
tight, you know, all the mothers hug
together, keep all the babies warm
together. It's so cold. Then all the old
people, how okay, every night your papa
ask you, boy, can you hug me?
Papa, very cold. Okay, it's like papa.
And then water sauces were rare. It was
unreliable. And then for a large
population with livestock, I mean you've
read the census, men from the age of 20
upward, that list was already 600,000.
What about the women and the children,
you know? So that's why we think, you
know, that the the population here could
be upwards of maybe a million plus,
almost 2 million walking in the desert,
everybody looking for water. Can you
believe it? Everybody got no water.
Everybody looking for water. Any of you
been so thirsty before fighting for
water? You know how scary it is
to not have enough resource to share. So
the logistical problem of water was
unsolvable.
Uh you know they say that modern hikers
in these regions would carry liters of
water per person per day. The Israelites
had no such capacity. Okay. So they are
bound to thirst. And then the desert
could not support agriculture which
means that wild game and edible plants
are minimal. So once their provisions
that they brought from Egypt and it was
very rushed they couldn't bring a lot
starvation was a real and imminent
danger. And then the land was rocky
uneven and mountainous in places
and with certain locations that could
could flood suddenly.
And you know last time where got like A6
shoes
uh Brooks what New Balance
last time they just wear simple shoes
only you know every there's actually a
verse I can't remember where what is it
Deuteronomy I think it's definitely
Deuteronomy where God just to make a
theological point right your sandals did
not wear out it's like praise the Lord
okay you try walking on that same
sandals of 40 years in this wilderness I
also buy I buy your sho okay I buy your
sandals because my stupid teas my stupid
kins cannot survive this okay I'll
definitely buy shares in your in your
company because wow it can last so long
you know so the land was rocky uneven so
foot injuries any of you have foot
injuries before cuz you were running
uneven grounding you sleep ah yeah
cannot run properly
you think got got nurse there in the
desert to help you verse aid verse aid
ask uncle Matusilla uncle please help me
verse a I don't know how I feel Okay.
Broken limbs would have been common,
often fatal. Imagine your children
running around. Oh my gosh.
No medical care. I mean, traveling with
children, the elderly, animals greatly
magnified the danger. And last time, you
know, you travel your livestock. I'm not
talking about your cat Fifi, you know,
or or your your dog, you know, uh, Shane
or whatever. We're talking about I just
made that up. Okay. We're talking about
like your livestock. Okay, your children
running around and there were no
permanent settlements. You have to keep
moving. You have to keep going. Imagine
how strong the guys must be constantly
carrying all the tent equipment. Okay,
nowadays the tent equipment so nice, you
know, can fold with sticks and all that.
Last time they have to use don't know
what batang some wood I went uh holiday
recently uh visit my father-in-law and
then he set up a tent on his balcony for
us, right? Because my boys wanted to
stay outdoors. Okay. And then the tent
he used was a very very old tent. Okay.
And then I look, wow, last time the tent
like that one. So big, you know, so
clunky. All the batang batang. And this
is such a long time ago.
No supply routes, no rescue operation.
If you get lost here, you'll be lost for
sure. And there was also constant
exposure to hostile groups, bandits, no
defensive infrastructure. I mean, so
when you just look at this, right, what
do you feel? You know what? Do you feel
just uncertainty?
You know, no visible means of survival.
Some of us just look at that. How many
km is this? I have to walk, you know. I
don't normally walk more than 2km.
So much jogging. Someone is a hiking
jogging. You don't have to carry.
No margin for error. You make one wrong
turn, you walk, don't know how far, the
wrong way, you get lost. Then how to
turn back? You're out of supplies. No
clear end point. So for them as as they
go through this experience, the fear was
not abstract.
Do you understand? It was it was daily.
We never asked such questions, you know.
Will I have water tomorrow? Any of you
asked that before? I bet you none of us
really starved or or really thirst in
the way that they were worried about.
Will our children survive the week out
here in the wilderness?
This sustained stress, you know,
explained their frequent despair,
conflict so much so they would even ask
God, "God, just bring us back to Egypt.
Okay, I rather be a slave again, please.
Being a slave in Egypt is better than
going through this wilderness. I thought
I follow you. Things are going to get
better, you know. My God, literally my
God, after I follow you, things got just
so bad, just so hard.
Do I really want to follow you? Do I
really trust in you to lead me to
the promised land?
In the wilderness, God will test his
people whether or not they know that he
is the only one who gives them life. So
it brings them into a place where they
have that one recourse
to trust in him or die.
Trust in him or die.
Right? It's hard for us to relate
because for us I can trust God and also
have chaji and uh go ttdi cafe and then
hiking with uh you know and then do all
sorts of funny funny things right go
clang you know eat apple strudles.
Now there's no fun to do ministry can do
do ministry and eat apples strudel. Last
time why apple strudel
the whole commandment that I command you
today Deuteronomy 8. Okay, we're
supposed to read this just now. We
didn't have time. So I said I was going
to read this instead with you guys. So
we're going to just go through it. So
this is very very important passage.
Okay. In fact, when you read, it's very
helpful for for for us to read um later
passages of scripture to understand the
wilderness experience because you want
to know how the prophets interpret that
wilderness experience for us to
understand. So, this is what Moses said
to the second generation. Okay? Some of
them would have would have grown up in
the wilderness. Actually, all of them
would have grown up in the wilderness.
One all of them would have grown up in
the wilderness. The whole commandment
that I command you today, you shall be
careful to do that you may live and
multiply and go in and possess the land
that the Lord swore to give to your
fathers. And you shall remember the
whole way that the Lord your God has led
you these 40 years in the wilderness.
See that verse two? Don't forget
anything.
If I was a snucky Jewish child, I was
like, forget what? That's the only thing
I know.
My life's so damn hard all these years.
Okay. Right. Don't forget anything. is
40 years that he might humble you,
testing you to know what was in your
heart, whether or not you would keep his
commandments or not. And wow, so scary.
And he humbled you and let you hunger.
I told God, you always care for me.
Yeah, I care for you. I let you hunger
so that you learn that
well soon. and fed you with mana which
you did not know. Nor did your fathers
know that he might make you know that
man does not live by bread alone. But
man lives by every word that comes from
the mouth of the Lord. Your clothing did
not wear out on you like H&M.
And your foot did not swell these 40
years. Okay. No, you seriously your
clothes wear out, right? You don't like
your clothes, right? How to have 40 year
old. Wow. Amazing.
Know then in your heart. So basically
verse four is a point of how the Lord
has has took care of them. Okay. All
these years. And then know then in your
heart that as a man disciplines his son,
the Lord your God disciplines you. So
you shall keep the commandments of the
Lord your God by walking in his ways and
by fearing him. This is the only way to
get through
the wilderness to the land.
It is by the word of God.
trusting in the Lord, having the Lord
and his word as your source of life.
Now, the wilderness experience was
necessary because our sinful hearts will
so easily and naturally forget God.
You let me put it this way for some of
us, right? Do you know what is one of
the hardest things for God to do?
It is to bless you. You know why?
Because once he bless you, guess what?
you will like the blessing more than
him.
Correct? God, please bless me. Uh let me
think about it. Because if I give you
that new car, that new property, will
you then start hoping in that car and
property as opposed to me? If I give you
that new job, that child, you know,
maybe then that child will become your
new God, not me. Because that's exactly
what he says in the next verse. Verse
seven,
why did the Lord discipline them in the
wilderness? Verse seven, for the Lord
your God is bringing you into a good
land. Do you understand why you have to
go into the wilderness? Because I want
to bless you and you jokers when I bless
you, you forget me.
How how for know how hard it is for papa
to bless you because of how weward your
heart is.
thing. Huh? They're in the desert,
a land of brooks of water, of fountains
and springs.
Okay, look, if you've been in a desert
for 40 years, you know, any watch Dune,
okay, I don't have that super suit where
I'm drinking my own pee and sweat the
whole time. Okay, this this is this is
ancient Israel. Okay, those of you who
know what I'm talking about, don't know
what I'm talking about, go watch Dune,
okay? Where they basically suck their
own water their whole life from the
special super suit. You know, water is
like a precious thing. Look at that,
man. Just think about water. Oh my gosh.
Water. A land of wheat and barley. Of
vines and fig trees and pomegranates. A
land of olive trees and honey. A land in
which you will eat bread without
scarcity. In which you will lack
nothing. A land whose stones are iron
and whose out of whose hills you can dig
copper. Oh, copper. And you shall eat
and be full. And you shall bless the
Lord your God for the land, the good
land that he has given you. Okay. So
that's
his desire to bless them. That's the
life he wants to give them. But then
here's the warning. Verse 11, take care
less you forget the Lord your God by not
keeping his commandments and his rules
and his statutes which I command you
today. Les when you have eaten and are
full and have built good houses like
Subangjaya PJ houses, okay, and live in
them. And when your herds and flocks
multiply and your silver and gold, your
your bank accounts, your EPF, your stock
buys multiplies and and you have
multiplied,
then your heart be lifted up and you
forget the Lord your God who brought you
out of the land of Egypt, out of the
house of slavery, who let you through
the great and terrifying wilderness
with his fiery serpents and scorpions. I
should talk about that just next time.
and thirsty ground where there was no
water. Who brought you out? Who who
brought you water out of the flinty
rock? Who fed you in the wilderness with
manner that your fathers did not know
that in my humble you and test you to do
you good in the end.
Before I can do you good, I need to
humble you
because how easily your heart gets
lifted up against me. Verse 17, beware
lest you say in your heart, "My power
and the might of my hand have gotten me
this wealth.
You shall remember the Lord your God,
for it is he who gives you power to get
wealth, that he may confirm his covenant
that he saw to your fathers as it is
this day." And if you forget the Lord
your God and go after other gods and
serve them and worship them, I solemnly
warn you today that you shall surely
perish. He's talking to the second
generation here. Okay? Okay. So, they
have the whole context. They've seen
Papa Kong.
Yeah. Yeah. Everybody died in the
wilderness. You just remember where Kung
Kong was buried. Actually, you can't,
right? Cuz you don't even know where he
was buried in the wilderness. It's just
all the same flat land.
Somewhere he was buried. I warn you
today that you will surely perish. Like
the nations that the Lord makes to
perish before you, so shall you perish
because you would not obey the voice of
the Lord your God.
See, this is the profound point that God
makes to people whom he wants to save,
redeem, bless, how sinful they are that
they would so naturally forget him and
hold on to the riches that he wants to
bless them with. And this is why when
you think about it, the prosperity
gospel is so evil, right? That promise
where if you do certain things and then
God will bless you materially. It's so
evil because it tells Christians to
pursue and chase after the blessings of
God instead of growing in their love for
him in sacrificial obedience.
The whole point in deprivation is so
that they will look to him. But the
prosperity gospel is all about you know
using God to get what you want in life.
That's why it's evil and we speak
against it. We see that having little or
having too much is not the problem.
not having God is.
And of course, the danger is when you
have too much such that you don't want
to have God. Now, that's the problem,
right? And that's why Jesus warns that
how how hard it is for the rich to enter
in the kingdom of heaven. And so, God
deprivives his people intentionally so
that when he blesses them with
abundance, they would not lose sight of
him. It is what Paul learned in
Philippians 4:12. You know, we all like
that verse, right? I can do all things
in Christ strengthens me. But look at
what he says in Philippians 4:12 about
how he knows how to be brought low. He
knows how to abound because in any and
every circumstance, he knows the secret
of facing plenty and hunger, abundance
and need, he has the Lord. He has God.
So rather than asking for immediate
relief, just take me out of the
wilderness. Lord, just solve my
circumstantial problems, we should
instead be praying and asking for God to
teach us to trust in him, to live for
his will. Even in that circumstance,
that situation of poverty and destitute,
God wants his people to carry out his
will even when their present
circumstances are stacked against them.
So no matter what, come what may, God
expects his people to be faithful.
There's no excuse. Do you understand?
Because as you'll soon see, the Lord has
given his people everything they need to
be the faithful people. We have no
excuse.
They have to fight for him. This was the
problem with Israel in the wilderness.
Instead of pressing forward with the
word of God, what drives them? What
fuels them? What feeds them to go
forward? They keep looking back. They
keep looking for relief from their
troubles. They don't think that the
journey we've gone in the wilderness
towards a glorious future was worth it.
We saw that sin in Exodus and and we see
it again in Numbers. Now, but you have
to think about it. Which is worse?
Sinning in Exodus or sinning in Numbers?
Okay, because because some of you are be
confused. Exodus 15, they were
complaining about hunger and thirst.
Yes. Numbers 11, same thing again. I'm
hungry. I'm thirsty. Still the same
wilderness context. But which is worse?
Well, you can see from God's response
that in the book of Numbers, God was
hot. He was very angry. The first time
when they complained in Exodus,
for lack of a better expression, the
Malaysia way of saying, "Okay, they was
like babies. You know, I just saved you.
You don't know anything. Okay, you don't
know anything. But then I brought you to
Sinai.
I spoke to you through my servant Moses.
You have the tabernacle now, the
priesthood."
And then so so Exodus 19, right, was
when the Sinai covenant was made. Then
God explain explain explain talk you
know like I love you I love you I love
you theology theology theology okay
Numbers 10 okay so we're in a timeless
stand then Numbers 11 Numbers 11 you see
the same sin as Exodus 15
now when you read Numbers 11 and it
reminds you of Exodus 15 you know it's
worse after all that God teaches them
would they repeat the sins of the past
all over again, you know, to to apply in
our situation. It's where
the younger generation of CRCans,
you know, batch batch Z, okay? Or batch
AA,
they commit a sin that was as bad as the
previous generation. Who do you think is
worse? Batch A or batch AA?
Okay. Okay. Both are bad. Okay. Both are
bad. But of course, the newer one. Why
the newer one? Because they were meant
to know better, right? So more pressure
to all you new members, okay? Joining
us. Got to catch up. Got to catch up.
Okay. Of course, we'll be very patient
like we help one another. Blah blah
blah. All that we have to teach and
support. But every subsequent generation
as they look back to the past and see
the failures of the previous generation,
they should learn from that. They should
learn from that. And this was Paul's
point to the church in 1 Corinthians 10.
We read it just now when he talk about
the wilderness generation as an example
to the church,
right? They were the people of the old
age. So, it's even more profound. We're
not even talking about just one or two
generations removed. We're talking about
a generational divide in terms of
peoples who now have two new uh peoples
who are part of two different existence.
The people of God as the people of the
new age.
looking at the people of the old age
that we might not be as evil as they
are. And so when the people of God in
the new age starts acting like people of
the old age, something's profoundly
wrong with the people of the new age.
How can you still commit the sins of the
previous generation?
These stories, as Paul said, verse 11,
are written down for our instruction,
for the regenerated people of God.
People on whom the end of the ages has
come. A people who are meant to be
humbled by the cross of Jesus Christ so
that they will live for the glory and
worship of God alone instead of their
sinful desires.
Do you understand? They were humbled by
the wilderness generation. We as the
church are meant to be humbled by the
cross.
When you look at that and see what God's
son had to do for you to have a life,
for you to have the privilege to trust
God, to walk with him,
the son of God had to die.
In the wilderness, Israel did not have
God's word in their hearts as much as
Moses taught them from Si. Okay. So they
did they didn't store in their hearts.
So looking now at numbers 11. Okay. So
numbers 11 onwards is where you start to
see
more story in the book of numbers. And
you know when we start looking at the
story section it's it's all negative.
It's all terrible. So let me just read
verse 4 to 6. Okay. So the context is
they are cra they have a craving among
them. Okay. They want to eat. They wept
and they were crying. No, we had we we
have meat to eat, you know. Remember the
fish?
Fish was great, man.
Egypt was free. Cost nothing.
The cucumbers,
my god, the cucumbers,
the melons, and the leaks and the
onions.
God, I love onions. and garlic.
No strength is dried up.
There's nothing at all but this mana to
look at.
And you complain to God like that.
God for you bread from heaven. You want
fish and onion, garlic. Okay, maybe
you're tired of eating the same thing
over and over again. But still though,
that's not the point, right? That's not
the point. They were longing for Egypt
and the food they had. And this is a
very tragic moment,
you know. Sure, they may have no have
food in the wilderness, you know, but as
as I was trying to explain, and we'll
soon see more of this later, okay? And
this is something you have to ask
yourself, you know, if you were in their
shoes, do you think you respond like
that or you do better?
Okay,
for us Malaysians, you're like, "Oh,
very hot, very hot, very hot." Okay,
need to practice fasting. No, if God
test me, I shall die one. Okay.
No, but you see the difference. They had
Exodus 19 to Numbers 10. And
essentially, if I just kind of summarize
that very briefly that all all those
words in all those chapters is God
telling them what their destiny is.
No other nation has their future.
They are an incredible creation that God
is bringing about in the world.
So, would you rather have fish
or the word of God that tells you about
your eternal destiny? Which one would
you choose? That tells you about the
great privilege that you have to be with
him. Do you would do you want to go back
to your old lives when you were a slave
to an oppressive dictator?
Or would you rather travel with God in
the wilderness? You know, they say their
fish is free, right? It's not free.
Okay? Why is it not free? because
they're paying with their lives. You're
a slave, Joker. How can you say, "Oh,
fish cost nothing." Hello. You are
there. That's something. Okay? You are
there eating the fish. You are a slave.
You're paying for it with your sad
lives.
You see, God believes that by Numbers
11, his people should have done better.
Even though the wilderness was really
hot, even though it was really hard,
they should be able to do better. Given
all that he has taught them about who
they are, who he is. This is the sin of
Esau who would give up his inheritance
for a bowl of stew.
Okay, by the way, just something you
think about, you know, because a lot of
the sins in the Bible, the the big top
ones are all have to do with food. Not
this Genesis 3, you know, she ate the
food. Okay. Then Esau wanted stew, then
Egypt wanted fish. Y watch out, man.
Malaysians, watch out. Watch out. Okay.
Some food sin. Then the whole world gets
judged. Okay.
So, Genesis 25. I mean this is and and
by the way there's a great significance
why I'm taking you back to Genesis with
the story of Esau because later in
numbers you know um nation of Israel
right Jacob they would meet their
brother Esau as a nation of Edom
okay so a lot of what you see here now
they're they're massive nations now but
their story goes all the way back to the
origins of their forefathers
how Edom's first father Esau
decided to sell his birthright, you
know. So if they visit Edom, I'd be
like, "Joker, you guys are the one who
gave up everything, man." Do you
understand? If I was a naughty Israelite
and I visit Edom, I'll just say, "Whoa,
you guys are the one who like decided
that you are better. Whoa, you didn't
want any of your inheritance." Yo, so
stupid like you. Okay,
so you go back to the origin story
when Jacob was cooking stew. Okay. Don't
know whether it's very nice or what, but
the brother's very hungry. Okay. Verse
30.
He wants some of that red stew. I'm
exhausted. Therefore, his name was
called Edom. And then what? Jacob damn
smooth.
Send me a birth right now. Essaul said,
"I'm about to die.
What use is my birthright to me?" You
know, it's such a profound moment. You
know, because if you think about the
wilderness generation, what did they
feel in the wilderness?
They're about to die.
Of what use is the promised land and
God's word about me being his treasured
possession? I'd rather go back to Egypt.
Okay,
Esau, that's who you are right now.
Jacob said, "Save it to me now." So he
swore to him and sold his birthight to
Jacob. Then Jacob gave Esau bread and
lentil stew and he ate and drank and
rose and went away. Thus Esau despised
his birthight. You know what was his
birthright? Do you know who who Jacob
and Esau are, right? It's not just bunch
of two brothers, you know, okay, like
like some Korean drama. These these
these guys are are descendants of
Abraham, okay? And in terms of the Bible
storyline,
salvation begins with Abraham. Do you
understand? Out of the nations of the
whole world, God chose this one man. So
if you are a member of his family, you
are blessed you know because basically
the salvation of the whole world is
going to come from you. Can you imagine
the interaction between Abraham's
grandsons? Give me a stew. Give me a
stew. Give me a give. Hello. You're
supposed to save the world. This is how
you talk saviors.
Genesis 12. God said to Abraham in you
all the families of the earth shall be
blessed. Esau as the firstborn had that
right to continue to pass on the
inheritance, the blessings of Abraham.
But now he would give it up to his
brother Jacob. Now Jacob is a scammer.
Okay. And what he did was clearly wrong.
Later you read a story about actually
his mother is the genius one. Okay. The
mother is like
can just stick from your father. Father
blind already. Okay. So he tricked his
father. Okay. And stole his brother's
birthright. But you know what? for all
his scamming activities. At least he
what? At least he values the birthright
so much so that he will scam his brother
for it.
Okay? At least he wants it, man. Look,
let me put it this way to you. If you
could scam people to get property in
heaven, would you do it?
Okay, I would do it. I'll be the first
to do it. Call Pastor Robin, join me.
Okay. All the pastors together. Okay.
Cuz we all know this business very hard.
Pastor go to heaven. Easy.
Of course, not right. But hey, at least
this scammer, he knows what's precious.
He's willing to do anything to get it.
And of course, given how Jacob now was
the inheritor of God's promised
blessing. I mean, God knows already.
From the moment he was born, God already
said the younger will serve the older.
All that. Okay. So, so he knew it was
going to happen and it happened and now
that he's going to be the inheritor, God
would put Jacob through a wilderness
experience of his own. Right? So, when
you read the stories of the patriarchs
of Israel, it's a paradigm for how we
understand the stories of the later
descendants of Israel, whether or not
they would do any better than their
forefathers.
You know, at one point, Jacob had to
return. God called him to go home,
right? All right. So, Jacob left home,
went to his uncle, made a lot of money,
you know, had four wives, 12 kids, uh uh
scammed his uncle, okay, by the
blessings of God. And um his his uncle
scammed him. And then now he has to go
back home. God calls him to go back
home. He has to face his brother, Esau.
And in many ways, Esau is more powerful
than he. And if you think about it, you
know, from a theological point of view,
Esau representing a foreign nation,
Israel, going out now into the
wilderness to face the nations of the
world.
to go back to the land to go home. Now,
Jacob has to go home. He has to face
Esau,
a more powerful nation, so to speak. He
was afraid that his brother would kill
him. And he could not move forward to
face Esau unless unless God would
promise assurance that God would bless
him. So, this is a very important scene
in Genesis. Genesis 32 24-30. Those of
us who did Genesis together know how
important this is.
At one point, Jacob was left alone
during the journey, the travel, and a
man wrestled with him until the breaking
of the day. When the man saw that he did
not prevail against Jacob, he touched
his hip socket, and Jacob's hip was put
out of joint as he wrestled him.
Then he said, "Let me go, for the day
has broken." But Jacob said, "I will not
let you go unless you bless me." And he
said to him, "What is your name?" He
said, "Jacob." By the way, Jacob means
heel grabber, scammer, right? Then he
says, "No, no longer shall your name be
called Jacob, but Israel, for you have
striven with God and with man and have
prevailed." Then Jacob asked him,
"Please tell me your name." Why you ask
my name? Okay. And there he blessed him.
So Jacob called the name Pineal, saying,
"For I've seen God face to face and yet
my life has been delivered." Okay? So
what we're seeing here is is Jacob
wrestling with a divine figure. Okay? So
it's not technically gone and we don't
really have as much detail. Could be an
angel, whatever. But the point is this
was an engagement with God. Okay, that
that's the point that we're seeing here.
And the divine figure could have easily
defeated him. We know that. Verse 25.
But it's kind of like let Jacob wrestle
all night long. You know,
any of you watch um this this show on
Netflix physical 100.
No, it keep appearing on my thought why
not watch. There's this one. Who has
watched it? Who knows what I'm talking
about? Okay. Uh okay. Okay, some of you
bigger guys, you know, this all the guys
who work out, watch it. Okay, so um so
it's about a lot of the healthy people
who who yeah, they come together and
they they are supposed to see who's the
healthiest. Okay, or the strongest or
whatever. So wrestling, you know, and
the timer was like 2 minutes, 5 minutes,
10 minutes, you know, and they were
already like panting and dying. Jacob
wrestled with this guy all night long
and he was a divine figure. And then at
the break of day, this guy just touched
his hip h and then he becomes crippled
for life. That's it. Crippled for life.
But what you see here, here's the point.
You know, Jacob held on to him. The
divine figure said to Jacob, you know, I
mean, he could have just like whacked
him and just walk away, but he's making
a point here. Let me go. Jacob said,
"No, I won't let you go."
Morning already. Let me go. Okay. No, I
mean his name heel grabber. Okay. So, he
keep grabbing grabbing. Okay.
Right. From the moment he was born, he
lived for his own advantage. He would
lie and cheat his way through life.
We've seen it in the story. And then God
humbled Jacob for many years. He served
under a far greater scammer, his uncle
Laban.
And then when he became successful, he
left. Now he's facing a bigger force.
And so he was very distressed, very
afraid.
You see, and and then in the earlier
parts of the chapter, um ah man, I
didn't copy it down, but if you just
read a few verses earlier, Jacob knows
that God has blessed him tremendously.
Okay? So he he went to Laban with
nothing. He was scammed, but he came
back extremely wealthy and prosperous.
And he knows that he could not have
attained any of that if not for God's
favor upon him. But Jacob also knew that
those blessings could not protect him
from Esau. And the only way he could
move forward and face Esau, then go home
is if God
would do good to him, would deliver him
from his brother's hands, or in the way
Jacob will put it, will bless him. And
so Jacob strove with God. Verse 28,
for you have striven with God and with
men. And that was was captured by that
all night long wrestling match,
that engaged struggle.
He did not let the divine figure go, but
persevered all night long. He clung
tightly to God. And that is why he is no
longer called Jacob, but Israel, meaning
the one who strives with God. And that
becomes the paradigm for all future
generations of Israelites.
To be Israel
is to strive with God, to be God's
fighter, to be engaged with God in uh
all that God is doing in testing and
molding and shaping you
so that at the end you will prevail and
receive the blessing of God. An
Israelite, if he's true to his name, is
one who will prevail over all the
obstacles that God will put in his way
because he knows, he believes, he
trusts, that's why he clings on tightly
that it is God's will to do him good.
And that is why when you go to the book
of Numbers and you see the descendants
of Israel,
they have not lived up to their name.
This is not This is not who you are.
A fighter of God does not talk like
this. Israel should not be talking like
this. Oh, I wish I had meat. Hey, look,
you're Israel, bro. Okay.
The descendants of Abraham and Jacob
have failed to understand what God has
been teaching their family for
generations.
Since the time of their forefathers all
the way to now,
God would have given them everything
and they would trade it away for their
immediate gratification.
God has shown them his faithfulness, his
mighty power for generations,
but they would choose to abandon all of
that. God kept his promise to Abraham,
delivered them from Egypt.
If they can't appreciate all that God
has done for them in the gift of his
blessing, God will disinherit them. You
see the language that God used when he
talks about how he rejects his people.
Disinherit. It's like your father saying
to you, because of all that you've done,
your rebellion, how you hated me, how
you despise all the good that I've done
for you, I'm going to take your name out
of my will. You will not receive a
single cent, not an inch of property.
In fact, I'm going to take away my name
from you. I disinherit you.
Do you understand the way God looks at
this people? They are his children whom
he's willing to bless and maul and to be
to be the greatest people on earth.
This is why, by the way, if you think
about it, God will not give life in the
kingdom to Christians who turn back from
him. What more non-Christians?
Because these Christians, they would
rather have this world than life in the
eternal kingdom. They would rather have
the pleasures of the flesh than the
pleasures of knowing God. These
Christians want their own version of
their bowl of stew.
To choose this world is to choose that
bowl instead of choosing God.
So, you know, as Christians, when we
talk about eternal life to other people,
do do we do we make it clear what what
it really means to have eternal life in
heaven? I mean, if you think about it,
it's God giving sinners like you and me
a place in the kingdom of heaven. You
know, you have you have real estate,
guys, in heaven. property, okay? Bought
by the blood of Christ.
So, can you just say to God, "God,
how come you didn't let my mother and my
best friend go into heaven? I know they
didn't worship you. They didn't follow
you, but but why must you send them to
hell? You know, why you refuse to to
allow them into your kingdom?" You know
how sometimes people ask, "Why doesn't
God save everyone?" I don't know. Does
your father give property to everybody?
Do you like it if the Malaysian
government gave property to Indonesians?
Indonesians, we love you, right? No,
just think about it. If the Malaysian
government decides to give Sububang Jaya
property, okay, to Indonesians and
Filipinos
whilst they're still staying there, you
like or not? You don't like, right?
Would you like it if your father gave
your inheritance to your cousins in
America?
You don't like, right?
Oh, but God, you're very rich, man. I
should give to everybody. Oh, oh, that's
that's how it is, huh? That's how it is.
The problem with God's people in every
generation
is that they don't trust their God. See
how I use that pronoun there? They are
God,
their heavenly father,
their king, the one who desires to bless
them. because if they did, they would
have the strength and courage to serve
him no matter what comes their way. So,
you know, when you read Israel and they
say things like this, our strength is
dried up. No strength to to live for
you, God. Very tired, very weak, you
know, powerless.
I'm weak. I'm powerless. That is one of
the most things that you can say to God
because everything that God has been
saying to them is for the strengthening
of their hearts to go through the
wilderness to overcome. You know, I I
know you have hunger pangs and you're
very thirsty and and and psychologically
you're going through a lot, but but I've
strengthened your heart, your soul with
my words.
And that's the most precious thing you
have. Man does not live by bread alone,
but on every word that comes from my
mouth, you take that with you to the
wilderness.
What's the point of God saying to them,
I will be with you wherever you wherever
I lead you. Uh Deuteronomy 1, I mean,
there are many passages, okay, in
Exodus, there's a numbers version and
then Deuteronomy, I'm going to choose
Deuteronomy 1 because it's easy.
Deuteronomy chapter 1 29-31, God says to
the people of Israel, don't be afraid.
Why? Because I go before you. The God
who goes before you will fight for you
just as he did in Egypt before your eyes
and in the wilderness where you have
seen how the Lord your God carried you
as a man carries his son all the way
that you went until you came to this
place. You know, for an illustration, I
was half considering carrying my son the
whole time. No, I'm just kidding. Okay.
No, just imagine carrying a baby. Okay.
All the way. Okay.
Imagine God carrying
his
son for 40 years
now the mom's moms you use carrier
okay I love those carrier things my wife
was wearing one just now you see that by
the way pro just buy them man those
things are amazing you know but if you
don't have that carrier thing after a
while your bes are very tired you know
God says I carry you for 40 years I did
not put you down I carried betrayed you
for 40 years. I loved you.
I will fight for you
and you will betray me.
Exodus 15
going back after he defeats Egypt. The
Lord is a man of war. The Lord is his
name. I will fight for you because I've
already defeated the greatest empire in
the universe in the world at that time.
and I'm raising you now to be the
greatest empire.
He's preparing Israel to fight for his
name, to live up to their name, to truly
be Israel.
And so he does so by giving them his
word that they may have the courage and
strength to do it. Now, this is what
Joshua understood
when he said to the people who were too
afraid to enter the land to fight the
armies of Canaan in in Numbers 14:9.
Look at what look at, you know, Joshua's
argument, right? His theological point
to them about like why they should be so
confident to enter the land. If the Lord
delights in us, seriously man, if the
Lord is with us, he favors us, he will
bring us into this land and give it to
us, a land that flows with milk and
honey. Only do not rebel against the
Lord. The problem now, guys, is not the
Nephilim, is not the Amalachites,
it's you guys. is your own sinful heart.
You not being a son. Don't fear the
people of the land, for they are bread
for us. You understand? We're going to
eat them for breakfast tomorrow, guys.
Okay? Their protection is removed from
them. The Lord is with us. Do not be
afraid.
Heart laugh for Joshua. He and Caleb,
the other guys were all like arguing
against them.
Every single word that the Lord gave to
Israel through Moses about the
tabernacle, the law, the sacrifices, the
priesthood. I mean, what do you think
all of that was about?
Just extra information, Old Testament
trivia. No. Is God showing them clearly
his purpose for them? And you know, as a
teacher, he's done very well, isn't it?
Those of you who struggle to teach
people and all that, you want to think,
how do I explain abstract concepts to
people? the trinityah all that like
difficult concepts, right? Look at how
God does it, man. He creates a whole
reality for them. Organizes them around
the tent of meeting, the tabernacle. It
stands as a as a visible sign of God's
promise that he is their God. He is
there with them. So the words of the
pentitute should give courage to the
people of God to carry out his will to
press on to move forward. And so when we
come to the book of Joshua that's what
we finally see the second generation
humbled by the wilderness experience
who has been taught Torah by God's
prophet. Again that's why you have
Deuteronomy.
Okay.
And then when you read the opening of
the book of Joshua when uh Joshua was
appointed,
the Lord assures Joshua that he will be
with him. Verse five, I will not leave
you or forsake you. So, as a result of
him being assured of God's presence with
him, verse six, be strong.
Be courageous.
For you shall cause this people to
inherit the land that I saw to their
fathers to give them. Only be strong. Be
courageous, being careful to do
according to all the law that Moses, my
servant, commanded you. Do not turn from
it to the right hand or to the left that
you may have good success wherever you
go. This book of the law. Okay. And I
think that refers to the pentetuk.
So what's his resource? What what feeds
his courage? His soul. This book of the
law. God's word shall not depart from
your mouth, but you shall meditate on it
day and night so that you may be careful
to do according to all that is written
in it. For then you will make your way
prosperous. And then you will have good
success. Verse n. Have I not commanded
you? Be strong. Be courageous.
Do not be frightened. Do not be
dismayed. For the Lord your God is with
you wherever you go.
You see, God raised a leader like Joshua
who was committed to God's cause. He
will be that source of encouragement to
the rest of the people of God to fulfill
their calling to inherit the promised
land because what he has and what he
must uphold is God's word concerning his
will for his people.
Uphold that, trust in that, believe in
that. Move on.
would that more and more leaders and
Christians be like Joshua?
Jesus the second and better Joshua. By
the way, you know Jesus Hebrew name is
actually Joshua also. Okay. So Joshua is
the Old Testament Jesus. So that's why
you know he's like the conqueror. He
trusts God courageous lead the people to
to to the promised land. Okay. So Jesus
the second and better Joshua you know in
John 4:32
Jesus says my food is to is to do the
will of him who sent me and to
accomplish his work.
See that John 4:32 Jesus shows us that
the true sons of God eat God's will for
breakfast, lunch, and dinner. What did
you have for breakfast today?
Good for you.
Those of you online said, "Roly, shai,
no man, brother, you need to eat the
real bread of life."
No. Okay. Good. Good. Good. Good for
you. Okay. Keep you going for the
sermon.
What keeps God's children growing and
going is his word, not their physical
desires.
Okay? What sustains you? What keeps you
faithful? It's not what you want about
this and that, but
what God feeds you, which is his will,
his word. Would that the people of God
starve for 40 days in the wilderness
like our Lord Jesus so as to be truly
faithful to God and not fall for the
devil's temptations?
I mean, Jesus, when you look at Jesus
and what do you achieve in his
wilderness experience? You all know
that. Matthew 4, Luke chapter 4, Jesus
himself went through a wilderness
experience that he did not eat for 40
days, 40 nights.
And he was thinking about that verse,
man does not live on bread alone, but
everybody comes from the mouth of God.
Church, just as a quick point of
reflection,
um, as CRC, we're about to enter into
the next chapter of our lives where we
will be gaining more strength. In fact,
you know, we have been gaining strength
already. God has been blessing our
ministry and we have been growing and
with the purchase of a new building, it
is because we're anticipating more
growth to come. You know, if if all of
us in CRC just didn't evangelize and
married one another and have children,
our church will grow to 800. Did you
know that? Just through marriage and
babies, our church can grow already.
Okay? But of course, that's that's not
how I'm going to grow this church,
right? That's cheating.
But
but my point is with with as we move
forward into the future, CRC is going to
grow in strength. And it's at this
juncture
that we must especially remember that
our strength does not come from what we
see around us.
You might think that we're doing fine or
things are going to be okay. I don't
have to um you know be as strong or as
urgent or as missional or as dedicated
or as committed because there are other
people who do it. We're getting bigger
and we might find more excuse to be lazy
to go about our own way instead of
striving for God and his people. So
rather than trying to work towards us
being more united, calling more people
to come on board, I sometimes worry I
mean the leaders sometimes worry that
this is then opportunity for us to take
a back seat. I mean and you hear this
all the time, right? In certain
churches, those of you who grew up in
certain environments where where the
older generation would say, "Oh, let the
young right let the young people do it."
Then you like uncle
say that, right? Don't say don't don't
be rude. Okay. But uncle
what happened? So now got young people
you can retire already. Is it?
Would it be better if the uncle said
come young man uncle show you how to
serve Jesus as a usher? Uncle been doing
this for 20 years already. Okay. Uncle
know every chair.
Uncle know how to say hello in 20
different languages.
Come come come come come come come come
come come come come come come come come
come come come come come come come come
come come come come come come come come
come come come come come come come come
come come come
would that we have such uncles
you know rather than just like h getting
big already
what keeps us going
what fuels us where does our strength
really lie
for those of you who are newer you must
remember that CRC started out with very
little very small I mean as we are
moving into the new building you know we
we are rehashing a lot of these stories
over and over And mainly because we need
to remind especially the new generation.
You know it's very embarrassing for
pastor Robin to say this. I'm going to
say for him when he started out he was
really poor. Did you know that when he
worked as a pastor in those early days
he only earned 900 ringgit a month for
his family. 900 ringgit a month. Young
graduates you earn more than pastor. You
know two or three times more than him.
Okay. I lived in his patio. It wasn't
even inside his house. Okay. Not bad. It
was a glass store. It was very nice, but
it was still a patio. And in those days,
my stipen was just 300 bucks.
You know, I used to eat a lot of
gardinia bread and roti chai
and chicken rice. Okay. Pastor Vanessa
used to run Bible studies by the kaki
lima. Okay. For various reasons, you
know, she was just a student, but she
made it work.
My point is the the early generation
stood for the gospel and for the growth
of our church even when we had so
little. So what what fuels us what what
kept us going right? Our strength and
confidence was in God. And I know that
is true for many of you and I hope that
that will continue to be true. And for
some of you who need to repent about
this, I hope that you will repent and
and realize that with the more resources
that we have now, we should be doing so
much more. If we manage with so little
in the past, we certainly can do so much
more with what we have today. Do you
understand CRC? The more we progress
into the future, the less excuse we have
to fail.
Cuz each passing year, God is increasing
his blessing to us.
Don't let that blessing become your
curse, man. And it's not God's fault. is
that you are sinful.
You lifted up your heart against God.
Should we have less fervor because we
are more blessed? No.
Why should any of us turn back from this
journey of faith and choose to live for
our own ambitions and our own desires?
So you just think okay about the members
who left church
those who decide to apostatize to walk
away from God.
It is so troubling when we see
people who were once our brothers
sisters feed off something else
to abandon their inheritance for a bowl
of stew.
It'll be a tragic day if future
generations of CRCians lack the courage
and strength to keep pressing on in our
mission to change the landscape of
Malaysian Christianity with the gospel.
That will be the day when we come to
realize that we have either failed as
this present generation to pass it on or
the next generation failed to learn from
us. Okay? May that day never come.
You mustn't sit on our laurels and just
think that everything will be okay.
We have to keep striving
for the good of the church.
Since the beginning of God's work in
establishing his holy people in the
world, God has taught his people to
trust in him to carry out his will, to
trust his word of promise. So, think
about Abraham as a paradigm of faith and
all that Abraham had because guess who
wandered in the land of Canaan for a
really long time as well? Abraham.
Abraham all he had was Genesis 12 verse
1-3 go from your country and your
kindred and your father's house to the
land I will show you I make you a great
nation and you all the families will be
blessed so Abraham himself we we know
that that he embarks on a wandering
journey later in Genesis 20:3 as he
talks to Sarah he says you know as we go
about our wanderings please tell people
you're my sister okay
he leaves the city of the calaldanss to
become a surgeoner in the land of
Canaan. You must understand that Abraham
left a sophisticated and established
city to become a nomad to become a
wanderer.
And God calls Abraham out of that
idolatrous city just as he redeemed his
people from Egypt
and gives him his word to bless his
descendants in the land that God will
give him. So a very important point here
to realize is that is that you know if
you talk about the experience of faith
right towards the promised land it's you
know through the wilderness we will go
through a wilderness experience now if
you know that you will go through a
wilderness experience how many of you
will volunteer for it
volunteer for it yeah man I love the
hardship put me through it yeah okay you
know you over and over again you don't
you don't
um the the the even the patriarchs
Abraham thinking, "God, that sounds like
a great idea, man." Yeah. Yeah. I would
love to abandon my my prime property in
uh just kind of live intense with my
barren wife in the desert. Yeah. Yeah.
Exposed to all sorts of elements and
dangers every single day. Yeah. That
sounds like fun, man. You don't see him
say that, right? Abraham was an idoltor.
He didn't choose to live leave his city
to live in the wilderness. But over and
over again, we see that the people of
God are a called out people.
God calls his people out. You
understand? From from cities. And by the
way, at least in the Old Testament side
of things, you know, from the time of
Cain and all that, cities are somewhat
negative because it is the it is the
epitome of of human ingenuity and
self-reliance. So you see that in a
Tower of Babel. After the Tower of
Babel, the the nations separate, right?
Disperse all across the world. What do
you think they did? They built more
cities, more towers to demonstrate their
strength and self-reliance. Whereas you
see that the people of God are the
wilderness people. You don't see God
going to the cities. Okay? I mean, this
is the Old Testament, okay? Making a
theological point here.
God calls us out of of human autonomy
and self-reliance
to a life of faith to a life of
wandering in the desert so that sinful
people may learn to heed God's call may
learn to trust in his word. Abraham left
his city because he was hoping for
something better. And that is why
Abraham is the paradigm of faith and how
God is shaping his chosen servants. In
the Hebrews 11, the author of Hebrews
would say that by faith Abraham obeyed
when he was called to go out to a place
that he was to receive an inheritance.
Verse 10, for he was looking forward to
the city that has foundations whose
designer and builder is God.
So since the beginning, okay, since
Abraham
as a paradigm of our faith, the people
of God has chosen to live in hope of
something better,
more glorious reality where God is the
ruler of the earth. So that's why we
don't mind going to the wilderness and
during whatever hardship and suffering.
Ultimately, what God wants is a people
for himself, a people who would love
him, seek to honor him in obedience. And
and Abraham's family was that chosen
people given that special privilege. And
at Mount Si, God made it known to the
descendants. Now, there are hundreds of
thousands of them. And he tells them in
Exodus 19 as he enters into a formal
covenant relationship to be their God.
He tells them, "You are my treasured
possession among all the peoples. You
shall be to me a kingdom of priests and
a holy nation." And when Israel accepted
that covenant,
they became the newly constituted
humanity under God.
Do you understand? to repeat what I've
told you before. My uncle every Chinese
New Year will ask me, "Where are the
Chinese people in the Bible?" You know,
that's why I'm not a Christian because
there are no Chinese people. I'm like,
"Please, my uncle, it's not about
Chinese or Jewish. It's about who
belongs to God."
And these people, they have that special
privilege.
You understand? So, when you read of
their failures, you feel like crying
because as a Chinese person, I was like,
"I didn't get chosen." Huh? You got
chosen and you fail.
Then maybe he's going back. Then you
think you'll pass, man.
We both fail. Okay. But at least you got
chosen. At least you got a chance to
fail. I didn't have a chance to fail. Go
straight to hell already and judged by
God. Okay. Israel
as they accepted the covenant to be
God's people. They are the only nation
in the world who rejected humanity's
rebellious autonomy of Genesis 3 as
embodied by the cities of the world.
Genesis 11.
So consider how the entire story of the
pentitute follows the story of this one
small family
that now that they are a huge nation.
They could technically build their own
city. That's not what they do. They
firstly become the people of the
wilderness.
You don't find God busing himself in
China or India and Mesopotamia or
whatever else he's doing on all those
big wonderful cities.
The Bible tells you to look in some
obscure desert,
this people, the Israel, what you see
God doing here in this desert as you're
reading about it, that is where God
chooses to be. He don't choose he didn't
choose the nice best place in the world.
He chose the place of death and judgment
and he brings his people there. So why
does he do that? What is he doing? What
is he doing? He's working on their
hearts. He's changing them.
He loves them.
He wants them to love him, to recognize
that they are his special people. As a
nation in the wilderness, they are meant
to learn that true life and knowledge
belongs to the Lord. As you read in
Deuteronomy, strength, power, and wealth
does not come from their own hands, but
from the blessings and mercies of God.
They are to realize that their life
begins firstly and foremost in God. And
so, the nation of Israel was meant to be
a people against rebellious humanity.
You understand? They just that's how
this is supposed to be completely
different from the rest of the world.
So the journey that Israel was supposed
to take was not merely a geographical
one. So if you're looking at the
outline, I'm under journey motif. Okay.
So in terms of the book itself,
geographically they were moved from
Sinai to Kadesh Barnea. That's in
numbers 13-19. And then finally in
numbers 2021, they arrive in the plains
of Moab. Okay? But if you think about it
geographically, they they still come
back full circle back to where they are
because they still haven't entered the
land. They're still in the wilderness.
So those of you who like a proper finish
kind of person, right? You want the
stories to end nicely. The book of
Numbers is a very frustrating story for
you. I don't know. Do you feel that way?
Is it? Oh, okay. Thank you for your
honesty. Right. Because you know like
what kind of conclusion is this? because
they're not where you know pastor you
said bound for the promised land book
finished already still not in the
promised land people who often ask why
doesn't God just bring us to heaven
already you know
maybe you think that right I'm sure you
all have thought about it come on I
thought about it too God why don't you
just bring us to heaven man what's all
this like you know live 40 years as a
pastor oh my god oh my god really okay
so hard being an engineer in Malaysia
you know so But you won't like numbers
very much because the whole of numbers
is they're not there.
Okay? They're still in the desert.
Now, as I've been trying to show you, it
is necessary that we understand God's
purpose in disciplining them in the
desert.
God is in no rush. Wow. God not rushing,
huh? Okay. I mean, for him, one day is
like a thousand years, you know. goes in
no rush to bring them to the promised
land because arriving there in the land
is not really the point because you may
be there but what if you're still not
faithful to God? What if your heart is
still Egyptian but geographically,
physically, you're there? So, it's not
as simple as getting them into the land.
You see,
God refused to allow the Exodus
generation to enter the land.
So there's a requirement, there's an
expectation
for those who can enter the land. And
the way he puts it in numbers 14 11 and
20, look at the language that he uses.
The Lord said to Moses, "How long will
this people despise me?" You understand
the issue or not? People think of
religion
as like some like I need to do good
works. You think God wants you to do
good works
for what? What good is it to him? He do
good. What good works you going to do
for him? Walk a old lady across the
street. Give the church $50,000. Is it?
Oh, so good. Oh, I clap for you. Now,
now I must bless you with heaven. No,
look at that. Look at that. Look at the
intentionality, the urgency, the
commitment that you've been seeing from
God. What does he want?
He wants you to I mean, I'm saying it
multiple times. trust him, love him. But
when you don't, as you reflect in your
disobedience, he would say to you, "You
hate me. You despise me. I said to you,
I will bless you. I will take you to the
land. You don't You clearly hate me. You
despise me. You don't believe in me. You
think less of me when I've already done
so much for you. I've shown so much for
you. So I will disinherit you." You see,
you know, their fear was inexcusable.
I mean we don't have time to read the
whole account but in numbers 14 they
were so scared because they saw the sons
of Anakim you know these were the
descendants of the giant yeah yeah bible
old testament numbers got giants on okay
giants are 10 foot tall guys the king of
son or bashan which those guys but their
bed is made of iron because wood cannot
hold his body he's too heavy and his bed
is like super big you know okay it's
like this stage would you want to fight
such people
by your own stren of course you won't
want to fight. But you see the point
that that Joshua says it's okay. We eat
him for bread. Okay, tomorrow is Anakim
for breakfast. Okay, everybody else like
Joshua, you're crazy. Okay, there's no
way you're going to do this. Okay, but
that's the point God is making to them.
God didn't care how how insurmountable
they thought the problem was. They were
supposed to have courage.
They were supposed to trust in him to
live by faith and fight
for the land that he promised them.
And so to fail to act is to fail to
believe in God and to despise him. And
so God punished them in the wilderness
for 40 years to suffer for their
faithlessness until their generation
died.
Moses himself, you know, Numbers 20:12.
Can you believe it? I don't know man.
First time I read the passage is like
just feel a bit outrageous, you know,
that Moses also is not allowed to enter
the land. Okay? because he did not
believe in God to uphold God as holy in
the eyes of the people of Israel.
Moses failed as a leader in Israel to
uphold the Lord as holy.
So you see a number of people not
entering the land and of course tak
Moses cannot enter land means he goes to
hell, right? Moses definitely not going
to hell. Okay, Moses is definitely in
heaven. So it's not about going to the
land per se. That that was the goal.
That was the point. So what is the
journey that Israel is supposed to take?
Well, one way of saying it is it's not
just a geographical journey, but a
spiritual journey is a journey of faith.
A movement from a movement of
repentance, from faithlessness and
idolatry to obedient faith in God. And
so, if you think about it, Israel has
already arrived.
Okay, by the way, I don't really like
all this journey journey language. Huh?
Because the journey language means that,
you know, I'm still finding myself. I
don't know who I am. I'm just kind of
like discovering. So I'm going to travel
to like India and Europe and America
just kind of like you know have more
experiences of life just kind of find
myself.
This is not that. Okay. This journey is
taken on the basis of knowledge and and
and promise
and hope.
So, it's it's a journey where you're
just meant to live out what is already
true of you, not some stupid
self-discovery moment. This is not some
self-discovery journey. And that's what
I mean when I say that actually Israel
has already arrived because in their
midst is the presence of God.
And here God is teaching them live with
me now even in the desert.
And so what we're to expect in the
promised land is just a greater prospect
of a fuller experience of what they
already have with God now in the desert.
So the hope of reaching the promised
land is really about the fullness of
that life, a consumated version of that
life of having God's presence and rule
over them as their covenant, as their
loving covenant lord. So to arrive in
the land, they must recognize in the
wilderness what it means to have God. Do
you understand? To benefit from the
land, they must learn to live with God
now in the wilderness.
So before they enter into the land of
promised abundance, which may cause them
to forget their God, God wants to train
the wilderness generation to be devoted
to him alone now. So they would rejoice
in him alone, glorify him alone. So
Israel's greatest threat was never the
foreign armies that they were so afraid
of all the time. There are number of
battles in the book of numbers
especially chapter 21. Okay, Sihon,
Bashan, all that og. Then in chapter 31
they would defeat the medians. So every
time when you read the war stories,
Israel will win. But when did they lose?
That's the question. When did they lose?
It was when they lost themselves.
That's when they lost.
when they were not truly holy to Yahweh
internally and you see that from their
disobedience from their lack of courage
lack of faith
and so the real battle for Israel is a
battle for their own soul whether or not
they will truly be the community that
God has called them to be. So to be the
army of Israel is not about being the
strongest militaristic army in the
world. No, it's to be the holiest people
in the world. And by that holy I mean a
people consecrated
oriented towards God. I don't mean like
a pure people you know who wears dress
and like never watches porn. I'm talking
about that. I'm talking about this
reality where their orientation is
towards
who God is and all that God says. So
even if they fail, they are still 100%
committed to keeping God's commandments.
Okay? You don't see perfect leadership
um in in in even at this stage of the
Bible like even in the life of David.
But God still loves David a lot because
very least David is super committed to
God no matter what.
To be God's holy people is to be
dedicated to his cause, to his purpose,
to be a people cleansed of their sin and
his effects. A people renewed in heart
and spirit for the love of Yahweh's
worship in all the world. So if you
think about it, their journey is a very
short one.
They just have to walk towards the
center of their camp.
As you can see and read from Numbers 51,
God structured Israel's camp around his
tabernacle. So what does God want them
to realize? He wants them to realize
that he ought to be the center and the
heart of their corporate existence, his
presence. So if they could keep
journeying to the to the center of their
camp so to speak, they would have been
able to fulfill God's purpose through
them in establishing his kingdom in the
world. Okay? So now I'm in the outline
where I said be tabernacle centered. You
see that? Be tabernacle centered. That's
the Old Testament way of saying be God-
centered. Okay? Or CRT's techline be
Christ centered, God glorifying, right?
Tabernacle, atonement, sacrifice,
priesthood, Christ, right? God
glorifying for glory of God alone. Okay,
so it makes complete sense. But the Old
Testament way of saying that tagline,
right, if we're Old Testament people,
you know, we probably have a tagline be
tabernacle centered. Okay, which is a
way of summarizing everything that meant
to be. So everything from Exodus 19 to
Numbers 10 is about the tabernacle. So
very briefly, I have listed out for you
uh the various sections from Exodus all
the way to Numbers 10. So you can see
here that the second half of Exodus
onwards it's about the instructions for
the building of the tabernacle and then
in Leviticus the institution of the
priesthood and the sacrifices. Then in
numbers 10 1-10 which is what we're
going to look at is how the people are
then organized around this reality.
Okay. And quick reminder when you look
at the tabernacle. Okay. We're going
talk about this a little bit now because
you need to be reminded of this. You
must think of the tabernacle as having
three concentric circles. So there is
the outer court. Okay? So if you look at
this image is the part that you cannot
see. It's all the extra land. And
there's actually an altar in front of
that tabernacle.
Okay? An altar in front of that
tabernacle. And that is where the people
of God can come and offer their
sacrifices.
Then once you enter the holy place, you
go inside the tabernacle. only the
priest uh who is designated to attend to
the bread and lights uh can enter and
the altar of incense as well. Okay. And
each of those holy items there symbolize
something. And then the most holy place,
the inner chamber that's behind the
curtain which conceal the ark of the
covenant. And those of you who are with
us in Leviticus, you will remember that
this entire structure was designed as a
teaching tool for us.
Okay, God cannot be represented by an
object, but God gave us a visual object
to teach us something about who he is,
who we are, and our relationship with
him. So, one thing that we realize from
the book of Leviticus is that
is that God is like locked away. You
understand? Hidden, far from us, so to
speak. But that's because if he if he
were to come near, we would die. we
would die. So his presence dwells in the
innermost part of the tabernacle
structure and only the high priest may
enter into that place once a year at a
spec at a specified time, the day of
atonement. Leviticus 16. And if anyone
comes close to the tabernacle, they will
surely die, okay? Or enters into it. So
what is God teaching his people? He's
teaching them his nature as a holy God.
how great and glorious he is and how
because of their sin they are deeply
offensive to him and yet he opens a way
for him to be with them and for them to
come with him it's not perfect it's not
the ultimate way not like how we have
with Jesus so in Jesus we have the
tabernacle fulfilled so that's why in
Christ alone we may have access to God
and that's why if you're non-Christian
here Christians look to God because we
know how great and holy God is we know
how offensive our sins are and that's
why we have a mediator. We don't think
like religious people where we can good
do good enough to be acceptable to God.
No, God is much greater than that. No
amount of good that we can do can make
him accept us.
So when we look to this reality, we see
how God makes it possible for sinners to
draw close to him. And now that we have
access to God by the means that he
provided through this tabernacle
reality,
we are to live out um this new reality
as his holy people as we journey through
life by obeying his commands and fulfill
the mission that he has given us. Okay?
And so this is why these Old Testament
books are so significant for us even as
New Testament believers. They not only
show us all that God has done in
redeeming and bringing a sinful people
to himself, but these books also teach
us what it means to actually be God's
people in the world.
You understand? Israel has a holy
status. They are the people of the
living God. And so they're different
from every other nation in the whole
world.
So even though they face deprivation,
opposition, temptation, they are meant
to overcome all those obstacles by
trusting the Lord and obeying his voice.
So their lives or the teaching of the
Old Testament is a paradigm for us as
God's people in the New Testament.
In many ways, it's it's not that
different, but what we have in the New
Testament, just the fulfilled realities
of what God has already started in the
Old Testament.
They show us what it means to be or not
be God's people. You see the point that
I'm making to you? You're not meant to
read the Old Testament as a list of
rules.
And the point is, oh, we are sinful. We
cannot keep these rules. So that's why
we need Jesus in the New Testament. So
who cares about the Old Testament
because it doesn't work. What we need is
Jesus and just trust in him because what
works is belief. So as so long as I
believe in Jesus, then I get to go to
heaven. That is not the gospel. That is
not Christianity.
What we see in the Old Testament,
it's about what it means is God teaching
his people what it means to be his
people.
Okay? And how profound that reality is.
So
at Si
the God of the universe reveals himself
and this is represented by the cloud of
his glory.
Okay, the cloud of his glory. So if you
look at this image, you can see this is
from Morales. Now you've probably seen
that before. And very quickly, what I
just want to point your attention to is
the fact that at Exodus uh in Exodus 19,
right, key passage where God makes a
covenant with Israel at Si, God appears
in a thick cloud. So then the key is to
follow the cloud. Okay. What then we see
by the end of Exodus, so we see this
beginning in 19. Then when you go to the
end of Exodus, Exodus 40, you see that
the cloud at Sinai
fills the tabernacle demonstrating that
God accepts
uh what what they have built which means
that they have obeyed his commandments
faithfully. And so now he is in that
tabernacling reality. And so then in
Exodus 36-38
it's actually anticipating the book of
numbers because there it says throughout
all their journeys whenever the cloud
was taken up the people would set out.
If it was not taken up they did not set
out until it was taken up for the cloud
of the Lord was with on the tabernacle
by day fire by night. So the book of
Exodus ends with a summary of the
significance of the cloud of glory
because it represents the presence of
God leading the people of Israel out
into the wilderness. So when you come to
the book of numbers chapter 9,
notice the repeated phrase at the
command of the Lord. At the command of
the Lord, at the command of the Lord and
that is associated with the clown and
the clown leading them, guiding them in
the wilderness. So one key crucial point
that we must grasp from the book of
numbers is God's lordship and leadership
of his people.
Okay? Now that's one one way of talking
about it from God's point of view. But I
want us to instead focus on them. What
it means for them to be God's people.
The fact that they are being led by God
and his word shows that these people are
a unique people. They are people
shepherded by God.
Okay, that's that's the theological
point that I must come to grasp about
their identity as Israel.
So near the end of the book of numbers
in chapter 33,
we see that Moses actually panned down
every single location that God brought
them to. Okay, so those of you who are
very curious about what where did they
go in uh for 40 years in the wilderness,
I go numbers 33 there for you. Okay, but
not a lot of description, just a lot of
names of places, 42 names to be precise.
Okay. But there's a point there that
throughout all their wanderings,
okay, at every stage where they could
have failed, they could have died, God
was with them and he brought them to the
next location and so on and so on and so
on until they are where they are. Other
parts of scripture will talk about how
God led them as a shepherd through the
wilderness. So you've read Psalm 106,
but another good psalm to read is Psalm
78:52-
55. And how God is often depicted as a
shepherd who will guide his sheep like a
flock. He will lead them in safety so
that they were not afraid.
Then they can overcome their enemies.
So God preserves them even as he judges
them and disciplines them because he
would repeatedly say to his people, "I
am the Lord your God."
You understand? In terms of the point
that I'm making, the key the key word
there is your God.
I am your God. That's what Israel finds
hard to grasp.
And so, one of the remarkable truths
that we see in the book of numbers and I
mean throughout the whole Bible is the
faithfulness of God and his steadfast
love for his people. It is his will to
do good to Israel to bless them with his
peace and the fullness of life. So if
you look at the end of number six, ah
this is the other verses that are very
very famous from numbers. Okay, the
ironic blessing the whole song. Okay,
that was super popular I think last year
or two years ago where you know
during COVID that's right it was during
COVID okay where the Lord bless you and
keep you make his face shine upon you
and be gracious to you. Okay, Lord leave
his countenance upon you, give you
peace. Okay, and they were singing that
to to all sorts of nations and people
groups.
But if you think about it, are all these
nations the same as the theological
reality of what this nation is?
It's not the same. And that's why I'm
hammering on this point. Okay? Malaysia
is not like Israel. Malaysia
is not a people dedicated to God. Do you
understand? The church is the church is.
So if there's anybody you want to sing
the ironic blessing to, sing it to the
church. Sing it to one another. Lord
bless you. Keep you. Show one cuz you
are his his. You're your Christian,
right? Yeah. Of course. Bless you. Keep
you. Okay. The church.
God will make his face shine upon the
entire people making them a reflection
of his glory in the world. So you see,
Israel is meant to be the people who
represent God in the world. They shine
his light. They bear his name. And as
Moses would say to his brother-in-law,
so it's a very interesting exchange in
Numbers chapter 10.
Yes, Moses has a brother-in-law. Uh his
name is Hobab. Okay, the son of Ruel the
Midionite. And look at what Moses says
to his brother-in-law. We are setting
out for the place of which the Lord
said, I will give it to you. Come. Okay.
So he a his brother-in-law know come man
you Midionite. Okay. And we will do good
to you for the Lord has promised good to
Israel.
See that his confidence how they're
going out into the wilderness because of
the confidence of God's blessing upon
them.
And later in enemy in enemy territory
when the evil king of Moab hired a
sorcerer to curse the people of Israel,
Balam can't help himself. Okay, but
bless Israel over and over again because
God will not let him curse Israel. So
Numbers 24:10.
Balac, you know, super frustrated,
right? I call you to curse my enemies
and behold, you have blessed them these
three times. Now think about it, okay?
Given the
um trials that they will face, if God
favors his people so much, what do you
think he will do to his enemies?
Enemies who are against them? God will
curse them. God will destroy them. So
you see, when Israel was standing before
Canaan and they were so afraid of the
Canaanites, what are you scared of? What
are you scared of? Really, you should
not be afraid. You should be afraid of
me
for because I am scarier than the sons
of Anakim. I am scarier than Edom. I'm
scarier than me than Midian. I am the
Lord and I'm your God. Go
fight.
Wow.
They're supposed to go and fight. God
wants to use them in fact to judge the
nations around them.
He would do whatever it takes for his
people to be his holy people. And that
would also include him destroying them
if they were to betray him.
So the question for Israel is whether or
not they will recognize and embrace the
truth about who they are and so live as
a people who will strive for the Lord
their God to truly be Israel.
And this is the perennial issue for the
people of God across all generations.
Whether we're looking at Israel or the
church today, the problem with many
Christians is that we don't appreciate
enough what it means for the church to
be the church. What it means for the
church to be the chosen, holy, redeemed
people of God. When you ask, you know,
people generally, what do you think of
Israel nation? What do you think of the
church? Community. Now, you think about
that. I mean, are we a community? Of
course, we're a community. Okay. But
what kind of community are we?
Do we see the people of God from God's
perspective?
And I believe this is the book of
Numbers.
Okay. So, you can already hear from
maybe what I've been arguing and saying
that I I I believe that the book of
Numbers is primarily focused on
ecclesiology.
What it means for God's people to be
God's people. The doctrine of the
church, doctrine of being God's people,
what it means for God's people to be
holy.
The opening chapters of Numbers are all
about the reality of God's people being
holy. Okay? The ordering that you see in
chapter 1 and two. I know the word holy
is not there and it just seems like a
bunch of list of people and numbers. But
when you look at this banner, okay, does
it not already give you a clue that
something special is really going on?
that instead of them camping wherever,
you know, like as if they're going
camping for a holiday, there's actually
so much organization
and there's actually a direction in
which they are supposed to pitch their
tents. Okay, so here's another visual
representation. I got it from the
internet. Yeah, I tried I spent at least
like half an hour looking through all
the photos, you know, and I chose this
one in the end. I I I quite like this
one because it gives us a sense of the
the size of each tribe.
Okay, we'll talk more about this next
week,
but basically what we see is that God
wants Israel to organize itself around
the tabernacle. And the way they
organize themselves around the
tabernacle into a four square encampment
is actually according to the structure
of the tabernacle itself.
You get me? You got just it? Okay.
Remember the tabernacle is designed
according to how many concentric layers?
Three. In the arrangement of the camp of
Israel, there are also three layers.
Okay. So, at the center of the camp,
reminding us of the Holy of Holies is
the tabernacle reality.
And that's and when you read Leviticus,
you can see all their worship when they
have their holidays, okay? When they
celebrate their feasts, okay, or where
they worship, everything is centered on
the tabernacle reality. And now in terms
of their arrangement, it's there. Okay?
So this is the heart of Israel, God and
his presence. Then there's that layer of
encampment by the Levites. Okay? here
and these represent the necessity of the
priesthood and the sacrificial system
and the need for mediation in order for
them to draw near to God.
with regards to the in terms of the
encampment as we'll soon see later in uh
two weeks time chapter 3 and four okay
the Levites are like God's special guard
okay you all know sometimes king got
special bodyguard yeah go God likes the
Levites because if you remember the
Exodus story when all of Israel
worshiping the golden calf you know
everyone's like hey golden calf golden
calf golden calf there was only one
group of guys who took out their swords
and stabbed their brother was the
Levites Okay. So they were jealous for
God and so God chose them as his special
God. This the kind of of of people that
God wants near him. And then finally in
the outer layer you have the entire
nation of Israel. So what we see in the
camp of Israel is a larger size model of
the tabernacle structure. That's a
tabernacling reality to everything that
we see. The very organization
and order of the camp itself is
communicating to God's people that they
should be tabernacle centered, God-
centered. In other words, they should
really be focused on being the holy
people of God on earth.
And so in those days in that time,
Israel was the newly constituted people
of God created by God for his holy
service.
You understand? These are your
ancestors. Huh? Okay. Christians. See
how God is shaping them, structuring
them, preparing for the march, for the
fight.
So when you think about how modern
Christians today just look at the church
and they just think community,
does this look like a normal community
to you?
You say nation, right? Well, think
theologically, okay? If we are the
fulfillment of this,
what do you think we're supposed to look
like?
We have a lot to think about when we
think about the book of numbers. God
wants so this is the great burden of the
book of numbers. So this is my attempt
now to just kind of summarize those of
you who like central truth stuff. Okay.
God wants his people to organize
themselves in a way that glorifies him
by upholding him as the center of their
community life with leaders. We'll come
to that soon. Who will lead the whole
community in holy fervor and order for
God's sake and their good. Okay, I know
it's a bit wordy, but if you can come up
with a better one, go ahead. So God
wants his people to organize themselves
in a way that glorified him. in a way
that glorifies him by upholding him as a
center of their community life with
leaders who will lead the whole
community in holy fervor and order for
God's sake and their good.
I don't know what you understand the
gospel to be, but many tend to think
that the gospel is all about God's love
for the death of Jesus. While that is
true, I hope you see that that is not
all there is to it. As I explained when
we did Leviticus, the tabernacle is not
just about the death of animals and
sacrifices, right? If that's all you
think what it was, then yeah, maybe in
the New Testament Jesus died.
Okay, so Old Testament cows die. Come
on, man. Obviously, there's more than
just that that's going on. No, it's
about the redeemed people living before
the presence of God. That's the gospel.
That's what Jesus achieves, your
salvation
to live for the holy God.
The book of Numbers, therefore, is an
exploration of the life of God's people
given all that God has done for them and
taught them and whether or not they will
live up to their high calling and
destiny. So, what we don't see in the
Bible is a disorganized mess mass of
individuals doing whatever they think is
right or or or with without any concern
for the corporate body. So another thing
that you should think about, okay, in
CRC we talk about church a lot, but as a
Christian, if you haven't really thought
much about the church, think about how
maybe you have instead been living
according to modern presuppositions of
individualism.
You're basically an individualistic
modern person.
And that is unbiblical. That is not
Christian. Because if you get
Christianity, guess what? You'll be part
of the people of God.
Get it? So, call yourself a Christian if
you want, but unless you're part of the
reality of God's people, I question
whether or not you're actually part of
the plan, part of the program. Because
this is God's design
to holify his people that they may live
for him together, fulfilling his mission
together.
So I'm not just talking about structure,
okay? If I if it was merely about
structure, guess which church the is the
most amazing church in the world? Yeah,
the Roman Catholic Church. Okay, so it's
not just about like having lots of
organization and SOPs. No, I'm talking
about the people of God having a
theological discernment. You know what I
mean? a corporate body of the people of
God together having a theological
discernment which means they have been
trained by the word and as they repent
and as they work in their ministries
they are really organizing their church
life around the reality of God and his
mission.
So that's the the fuel the energy the
impetus that that a church is meant to
have.
What are we really doing as the church?
What are we really organizing ourselves
for
as we look forward into the future? What
what are we moving towards together?
What are we who are we as God's people?
That's the question. Whether you call
yourself Christ evangelical reform
church, community baptist church, uh
first baptist church of uh clang,
Methodist, Satapa, whatever, whatever.
Okay? St. Paul's Anglican, I don't care
whatever your name is. The question is,
what is the theological reality?
The rest of Numbers explores the wonder
of Israel's communities composition and
life, its divine character. So, in fact,
here's another really awesome point. Not
only is the camp of Israel
tabernacized,
okay, I just created that word. Uh, also
you also see the tabernacle reality in
the structure of the book of Numbers.
Now those you structure people like who
answer structure okay like you see your
own but let me help you a little bit
okay my point what I want to show you if
you look at the first six chapters so
slide you can put this up you can see
how the way Moses has written numbers
also reflects a tabernacle structure
okay so the first six chapters you see
the ordering of the outer ring and then
the ordering of the Levites and then
depends how you read chapter five and
six right But you know I I think it
really captures what it means for them
to be devoted to God. Okay. So you can
see how 5-6 is about talking about the
heart of what it means for them to be
the the the order people of God having
life in this camp. Then then if you look
at chapter 7 to 10, you see them
bringing their offerings the the the 12
tribes dedicating themselves to God.
Then the Levites dedicating themselves
to God. And then 9 to 10 you see God's
leadership of Israel.
And then later when you look at chapters
11 to 25, this is where it gets a bit
more profound
because here you also see focus on the
three tiers.
So from 11 to 15, you see the rebellion
of the tribes. Then in chapter 16 with
the sons of Kora, you see the rebellion
of the Levites. And that's really sad.
Okay. And then from 21 and 25, now this
is where it gets interesting because the
camera zooms out, so to speak, from
Israel and then gets transported all the
way behind ter enemy enemy territory and
then sees the conversation between their
enemy and his sorcerer. Okay? And how
they are planning to destroy Israel and
how God as king protects his people from
afar. So it's a pretty cool story. You
know, if I think of a skit, right, I'll
do a skit where one scene the Israelite
the whole time just just barbecue
chicken. Okay, I don't know where they
or like they're just like, you know,
chilling, you know, relaxing. And then
here behind enemy territory lines, God
is like whacking the damn, you know,
balum donkey angel. All sorts of amazing
things happening there. And then Israel
is just like punksing there, you know,
relaxing. Okay, so safe. God protect you
from afar. So
that's the central part of the camp. So
what I'm trying to show you here is that
you can see at least from numbers 21 to
25,
right? There is concern for each tier of
uh Israel's camp and whether or not they
are consistent and true to what God is
is doing
uh with them and in them.
So broadly speaking there are three
major parts of the book of numbers.
Okay. So I mentioned earlier three parts
chapter 1 to 10, chapter 11 and 25 and
then the final section chapter 26 to 36.
And then you know if you just want to
zoom out and just think about what
you're really seeing in 1 to 10 you're
seeing an ideal a paradigm for the rest
of the book. God organizing a new
people. This is a new creation. And then
in 11 to 25, you see the rebellion
against this order.
Okay? And how God is teaching his people
through their revolts. And then in 26-
36, you see the camp reborn, the new
generation. So the whole uh the entire
first generation would have died by
God's judgment. so that the next
generation may be born. Okay. So,
there's a kind of a resurrection um a
theme in the book of numbers as well.
Okay. By God's judgment, then there will
be a new people born from that.
Now, just to be uh completely
transparent uh I mean you you actually
know anyway for this series in 2026, we
will stop at chapter 10.
Okay? So, I'm sorry, but a lot of stuff
that I'm talking to you about, uh, you
only hear it maybe in 2028
overview,
right? But, but what so that's why what
I'm trying to do is to give you a sense
of like beyond 1 to 10, okay? Cuz we're
going to cover it in the next couple of
months already. So, giving you a sense
of like 11 all the way to 30 36. So, you
get a sense of like, okay, what's really
going on here? What what what are we
anticipating? What what are we trying to
understand as we look at this so that
you know when you read the first chapter
already you know where we're going and
you can see like oh I can see how this
important yeah yeah yeah who is Simeon
yeah Simeon wow the 59,000
wow
I wonder how many of them die in the
plague how many of them are faithful
right every single one you know every
name must be holy unto the Lord okay you
can do that kind of stuff in the in the
weeks and days to
I'm sorry. That's the design. You know,
by God's timing, uh, it'll work out,
Lord willing. I'm pretty sure. Okay. But
just think about it. In 2028, as we
started
is a rebellion.
No, no rebellion in CRC. Okay. No
rebellion in CRC. You know, because in
27, Lord willing, we move into our new
building. Then it's like very
wilderness, right? Because here very
comfortable got nice chair that site uh
you know econ don't know whether we can
get or not we'll try to get okay it'll
be very wilderness like trust me
okay then the question is
will the people grumble oh my gosh
and then opening sermon January numbers
11
FISH CUCUMBER you know
me talking about all that all over again
oh my gosh
Lord. Okay. So, never mind. The Lord
knows he'll protect us. Okay. So, hold
on your horses. Uh this is this is part
one and then we'll resume part two in
2028.
Now, here's one more thing I want you to
understand about Israel's army. Okay,
this camp. And um you know, for for the
most part of my life, I didn't really
notice it until I started preparing for
this series and I started to to to pay
more attention to the details. But one
of the things I noticed that many people
seem to miss especially when they tell
the stories as well is the key place of
faithful leadership.
Faithful leadership. Okay. So you know
the 12 spies that we often talk about
that were sent out to scout the land.
They're not a specialized unit of
soldiers you know. Okay. So if you look
at numbers 13 verse 2 to3
here here's the identity for the spies.
Okay, you ready? Send men to spy out the
land of Canaan, which I'm giving to the
people of Israel. From each tribe of
their fathers, you shall send a man,
everyone a chief among them. So Moses
sent them from the wilderness of Pan
according to the command of the Lord.
All of them men who were heads of the
people of Israel.
So this so to speak spiesh
are the princes of Israel you know God
sent a prince to go scout the land you
know a head a general a capitan you know
a boss okay so that when he comes back
he can influence his tribe he can say
tribe we can do this man unite okay
let's go or as you saw he could steer
them away
is really establishing as his holy army.
So you've read multiple times when you
read chapter one just now um 20 years
old and upward all in Israel who are
able to go to war. And then that was
repeated over and over again. We'll see
more of this next week. But then when
you come to verse 45, every man able to
go to war in Israel. So God raised
Israel to act as his instrument of
judgment in the world. They're meant to
go into the land of Canaan to destroy
the idolatrous nations around them. And
as a theological point to them, God is
teaching them to be loyal to him, to
stand for his righteousness alone, to
not mix with the idolattors around them.
Do you understand? Whether or not in the
in the ancient world, okay, in their
time, and the way God structured them,
whether or not you can take out an a
sword and stab the idoltor is a question
of your faithfulness to God. Now, some
of you violent people like, "Yeah, I
love that. Why can't we do that now,
pastor? It's like
you preach the gospel. That's how you
stab people. You stab the people with
the Bible. Get it? Saw the spirit.
Open your mouth and talk. That's how you
stab people. Are you I want to do the
real stabbing.
Go and be the other religion.
This stabbing is harder. Trust me. Okay,
that's really easier. The war that God
is engaged against the world shouldn't
be overspiritualized.
Okay, so obviously the church today is
not meant to take up arms. As Paul says
in Ephesians 6, our flesh is not against
flesh and blood. But we kid ourselves if
we think that our battle against the
forces of darkness in this world has no
physical element to it. So, you know,
one reason why I don't like to always
use this whole spiritual spiritual
physical language is because actually
for the most part, it's always physical
and spiritual. You know what I mean? You
think what fighting the devil is just
spiritual? No, it's also bodily in in in
what capacity do you fight the devil in?
In your current capacity as a human
being that God saved whose bodies will
be resurrected one day. You're fighting
against sin in your body. Get it? Around
you. What you do, the decisions you make
with your mind, with your eyes, with
your ears, with your mouth, everything.
So, we obey God in our bodies. we fight
this spiritual battle in our body. So it
in many ways is very very physical if
you think about it. One day God will
bring his judgment upon the world and
that will be a bloody sight when God
executes all the unrepentant sinners. So
the church even though we're not like
you know bloodthirsty and start killing
people we're not meant to be that must
not lose sight
of these things that God will one day
bring a bloody judgment upon the earth.
bodies will fall on the ground and our
goal is to preach the gospel so that
those bodies will have resurrected life.
That's what we're doing. And so, we're
meant to advance God's cause in the
world and stand for his name. And so, as
God establish
tribe and gives them their place in the
camp, he also tells Moses to appoint a
head for each tribe. Actually, he starts
there. So, it's quite profound, you
know, when you think about it. Numbers
chapter one, they begin with the
selection of the head of the households,
the leaders of the tribes of Israel. And
then the Bible will actually list out
their names. Okay, Elazar, the son of
Shadur, you know, it's like some Lord of
the Rings kind of vibe to it, right?
Maybe that's where Tolken got all his
inspiration from, you know? But it's
it's it's amazing that that what we see
here are not just some like random
dudes, okay? It's not like we're in here
uh Reuben, manager of Echon company. Not
that kind, okay? It's Reuben,
manager of one of the 12 of Israel.
Get it? Do you understand? Well, from
Reuben. Okay. Elizor, do you understand
your job? Alazor, who you're meant to
be, how you are meant to lead your
tribe, your people. Okay, those of you
with WIC vibes going, "Yeah, my tribe,
my people." Okay, you filling it a bit
more.
Um, let's see. And then verse 16, these
were the ones chosen from the
congregation, the chiefs of their
ancestral tribes, the heads of the clans
of Israel. You know these were men who
were to lead tens of thousands of people
and then when they were come to make
their offerings in number 7 2-3
uh it was the chiefs of Israel who were
to bring the offerings to the lord they
represent their tribe in making the
offering and then in numbers 34 when the
land was divided
god appointed men. Okay. So what what
you find in numbers very interestingly
are seven full listings of tribal
descendants
man of prominence. Okay. So the fact
that your name is there it's being
pointed out. You are a leader. Okay.
Jason Jerome. What are the leaders this
morning? Adrien Liy.
Okay.
A GG leader. leader of the tribe of DDDI
of clang of whatever. Okay, these
leaders had the responsibility of
ensuring that their tribes were led
according to God's command through
Moses. They must follow the instructions
of the Lord faithfully and carefully and
ensure that every member of their tribe
would receive the inheritance that God
promised them. You have one job as a
tribe leader. What is your job?
Get them home.
Bring them home.
Okay, leave no man behind. Bring them
home. So the spies that were sent to
scout the land were a cross-section of
political leaders in Israel who had
significant sway over their particular
tribe. So each of them could have
encouraged or discouraged their tribe.
But most of them brought a bad report.
And so that's why you see the people,
the congregation complaining like crazy.
And then in numbers 14, as a result of
the bad report, guess what they said in
the end after they complained? Verse
four,
let us choose a leader and go back to
Egypt. Okay, so they basically reject
the faithful leadership that God has
provided. Well, those who are faithful
and then they want all the unfaithful
leaders and go back to Egypt. So numbers
14, it was total chaos. Okay, total
chaos. When Caleb and Joshua rebutted
the congregation and told them to trust
the Lord, do you know what the people
suggested? Let's stone them.
Let's stone them. This rebellion is
high. And so the the only way just kind
in some sense to protect Caleb and
Joshua and to get things in order again,
God himself intervene. He comes in. He
stops the rabbel from killing his
faithful leaders and then he judges um
the spies and the people for their
rebellion. Similarly, when you go to
number 16, in the rebellion of the
Levites, it was led by Kora,
okay, Moses's uh uh relative,
and it included
250 leaders. So, you just read the first
few verses. Okay? So they rose up before
Moses with a number of the people of
Israel, 250 chiefs of the congregation,
chosen from the assembly, well-known
men.
So you see, uh, every issue that you see
in the book of Numbers, right, is not a
small issue. Is basically a political
revolt. It's basically the church
leadership going crazy, rebelling
against the, so to speak, the the
faithful senior pastor and the faithful
Gigi leader. And then everyone's like
starts like ketala. Okay. So the people
who were against Moses weren't just a
bunch of random guys. They were some of
the most influential men in the camp of
Israel. And so again, God himself
intervene, affirms the choice of Aaron
as high priest.
Then in Numbers 25, uh that's when all
hell broke loose. Okay. The people
followed another god. And look at what
the Lord says. Once his people starts
aposticizing in large scales and
following after other gods, look at what
God says to Moses in verse four. Take
all the chiefs of the people and hang
them in the sun before the Lord. You
kill them all now.
Fail all the leaders.
You did not keep my people faithful and
pure that the fierce anger of the Lord
may turn from Israel. And Moses said to
the judges of Israel, "Each of you kill
those of his men who have yolked
themselves the bound of pure." Because
that's what you're supposed to do. You
understand? Can you kill a member of
your own tribe if they were to betray
the Lord your God?
I know it's hard. What if it's your
brother? What if it's your mother? What
is your best friend?
But will you be faithful to the center
of the camp? The leaders did not act.
What they should have done is to execute
the people who went after the Moabitete
women.
And then we discover that the principal
high-handed culprit, okay? You know, so
they were all repenting before the
tabernacle. They were all crying. And
then this one guy walked in as people
were repenting, you know, with his
girlfriend.
And then the Bible names the joker puts
his name down. Verse 14 and 15. The man
who was slain, okay, who was killed with
the Midionite woman, his name was Zimry,
the son of Saloo, chief of her father's
house belonging to the Simmonites.
So the reason why Finehus was just so
angry was because that guy was a chief.
He was a leader and he go and bring a
non-Christian girl so to speak into
God's house.
And his girlfriend was Cosby,
the daughter of Zur, who was the tribal
head of a father's house in Midian. So
she was a princess. You see? So there's
a political alignment. Now in the
ancient days right where if you marry
like between leaders there's a political
engagement which also then combines your
religion and your culture and many
single thing and many many other things.
So if you notice in all the major
failures of the camp of Israel in the
book of numbers they were all caused by
the leaders of Israel. Of course the
congregation are all complicit. In the
book of Deuteronomy Moses just whacks
the whole congregation. But the book of
numbers, this comes to the four because
really it's about God
ordering his people around the reality
of who he is and his leaders do play a
significant role in that. So the w
wilderness rebellions were seldom
generic sins of grumbling. It's not just
oh complaint come complain. No, many of
the rebellions if you think about it
were uprisings led by particular leaders
with a key role in the community. They
were impulsive. They were willful
revolts against God and they led people
astray.
You understand? And and though faithful
leaders were were were sometimes in
danger like Caleb and Joshua would have
been stoned if God did not intervene.
They were going to kill the good guys so
that the bad leaders can flourish.
So we see in the order of Israel that
God instituted overseers and leaders to
guide and teach his people.
The attention given to the divinely
designated offices of Israel is
consistent with God's goal in
establishing his covenant people. You
understand? So for Israel to be a holy
nation, they needed to learn how to
submit to the structure of leadership
that God had designated and to
appreciate the need for these officers,
rendering honor and obedience to these
men. Okay. Now, of course, it goes
without saying that the church needs
good leadership. So, for those of you
who think that you are a free floating
Christian, you don't need so to speak
church leadership in your life. Why are
you a church leader yourself? Is that
why a secret church in your own home?
Well, whatever excuse you have, you have
to question whether or not your problem
is that you are setting yourself a apart
from from the reality of God's
community, of God's people. If you're
not going to church because you feel
like you can't trust church leaders or
because you were hurt by church leaders,
well, don't make the mistake of thinking
that the problem is church leadership.
Maybe the problem is you. Maybe the
problem is that church leader, but the
issue is not church leadership. You
still need church leadership. Who are
you under? Who do you submit to? And of
course, don't make the mistake of like
five years submit to this pastor. Next
five years submit to another pastor.
Okay? Why are you actually leaving? And
that's why, by the way, one of the
toughest things uh in organizing and and
leading God's church is actually raising
leaders and um and teaching people to
submit to church leadership. Right?
Those of us who are part of membership
now, yesterday night and the many months
we have together, this is something that
we're thinking about together. Okay? So,
but for those of you who are not part of
any church and you don't really respect
church leadership, you have to ask
yourself if you think you can walk, you
can be excused by God one day. I don't
think so. I think you'll be in deep
trouble. Do you think God will be
pleased with your lack of submission,
your lack of support for godly
leadership? Do you think God will be
pleased with you living your own life,
doing whatever the hell you want? I
don't think so, man. So watch out that
you're not harboring a sin of rebellion
in your own heart. As for leadersh
today we talk about leaders also. There
is much for us to reflect from the book
of numbers. Okay. I don't know whether
you feel scared or not leaders but guess
who gets hangs first? Pastor Robin.
No really really.
Okay.
Then who gets next?
You know my joke, right? You know my
joke, Pastor Vanessa, right?
Okay.
Then all the GG leaders,
what happened to you, Jerome? You quit.
No. Yeah, I can hang. I hang hang
together. Okay, all hang together.
There's much that we need to reflect
from the book of Numbers, right? So in
the face of opposition,
in the face of really difficult
circumstances,
leaders, I speak to you and to myself.
What you say to your tribe matters a
lot. How you encourage or discourage the
people put under your care. At the end
of the day, if your desire is to do good
to your people, what must you be?
You must be centered.
tabernacle centered or in a way Christ
centered God glorifying God centered you
understand that's the only way we can be
good leaders for our people because
think about the direction of the camp
where we supposed to go towards the
center and so if you have members whom
you really love going out this way and
they're dragging people out this way
what do you do you kill them not
literally
okay
but as a way of expressing Old Testament
way you kill them.
And it takes courage, doesn't it? It
takes courage.
It takes jealousy for God's name. And we
mustn't be afraid when the time comes to
make a hard decision. And of course, we
have to keep our eyes fixed on our great
leader, our Lord Jesus Christ. As Peter
would say in 1 Peter 2:25, he is the
shepherd and overseer of our souls. So
that is why the fundamental thing a
leader must do is focus on the commands
of our Lord. So it's no different in a
sense with the Old Testament people. We
stay true to the word of God. We stay
true to the commands of Jesus. And God's
plan is to always provide a shepherd for
his people to guide them according to
his ways. You know our Lord, he will not
abandon his church. So no matter how
screwed up the situation might be, you
have a church leadership crisis.
Well, pray for godly leaders to rise up.
Pray for God's intervention. Pray for
God's mercy. Pray for hard
conversations. Pray for men who will be
courageous. That's what it what is
needed. Faithful men when you have a
crisis.
In discussing Moses's replacement, Moses
was hoping for a new leader who would
shepherd Israel. Numbers 27. So that the
congregation of the Lord may not be as
sheep that have no shepherd. And so he
prays to the Lord that Israel might have
a leader to guide them. And the Lord
gave them Joshua, a spirit empowered
leader who has a reputation for his
unflinching commitment to God. And so
the hope for the people is that one day
the whole world will be established
under the rule of God, God's leadership.
And that is the promise that God gave uh
to Israel through the sorcerer Balum.
Numbers 24 where you know the the pagan
sorcerer declares a star shall come out
of Jacob. A scepter shall rise out of
Israel. It shall crush all the enemies
and then verse 19, one from Jacob shall
exercise dominion and destroy the
survivors of cities.
Okay. So as God's people, we don't lose
sight of God's ultimate promise that at
the end of the day, his kingdom rule
will be established forever more. Our
God is a man of war. He is a conquering
God and he will defeat all his enemies
and his dominion will be forever. So as
the army of God, we have to fight.
Fight against sin, fight against
falsehood, fight against our own
internal corruption.
so that the people of the Lord may
remain pure. And as the church, we carry
the banner of Jesus Christ into the
world. So hopefully when you read
Matthew 28:18 to20, you have a little
bit more Old Testament flavor to it when
Jesus declares, "All authority in heaven
and earth has been given to me. Go
therefore and make disciples of all
nations." I know sometimes we, you know,
read this passage all the time. It's
about evangelism. It's about
disciplehip. No, it's not. You know what
it's about this verse? It's about world
dominion.
You understand? We're going into the
world into all the nations
to save people for the Lord. It's about
calling the people of this world to
submit their lives to the Lord of heaven
and earth. And that is the church's
mission and that is the church's agenda.
And we can be confident that we will
fulfill this great commission because
Jesus assures us in a very tabernacling
kind of way. In the last verse, he says,
"Behold, I am with you always." Where'd
you hear that from?
Tada.
I will be with you wherever I lead you.
From the Old to the New Testament, God
has always been with his people. So it's
not surprising when the Apostle Paul
commands the church to take up our armor
and be strong in the Lord.
You understand? Church, be strong in the
Lord and in the strength of his might.
Put on the whole armor of God.
So God has made the church strong. It's
sad sometimes all the time when when
Christians just think, "Oh, the church
is a hospital. The church is only for
weak and weary sinners." I mean, yes,
that's true. We're all weak sinners
depending upon the grace of God. But the
whole point of the gospel is that God
takes weak, terrible, evil, sinful men
and transforms them into his fighting
army.
So in giving us the gospel, in creating
us a new, God has equipped the church to
be strong in this day and age. So if
anything it is the church that must
present that picture of strength in
Jesus Christ. You understand? So it
might be weak in terms of money. Yeah.
Correct. Correct. Just weak money. Need
more money. Give more money. Okay. Not
enough strength there. Okay. But money
will come. Money is not our biggest
problem. Okay. But when it comes to
speaking the truth in Christ, must we be
strong? Yes, we must. When it comes to
living in righteousness and peace, must
we be strong? Yes, we must in when it
comes to trusting the Lord in the face
of much evil and opposition.
Must we be strong? Yes, we must in
living by the spirit. We must be strong
in persevering in all our works of
ministry. We must be strong.
Be strong in the Lord in the strength of
his mind. We are his people. Our Lord is
with us.
Now I want to turn your attention to one
last thing that adds a crucial dimension
to the central concern of the book of
numbers. Okay. So another way of
expressing the same desire that God has
for Israel is that they would be jealous
for his sake. So I I I I am working off
what I see in numbers 24 in the fine
story and the language that is being
used there. Okay. But but you know that
is really the heartbeat of the
priesthood and what god really wants
from his people to learn to be jealous
for him.
Okay. Or another word that we have used
recently from Titus uh is to be zealous
for God and to keep God at the center of
our lives. So if you look at numbers 25
verse 7-11
you see that this is the the hero okay
of the book of numbers. So many failed
leaders. But this guy, the priest
finding hers, who in his zeal for God
impaled Zimry and Cosby with a spear,
his action propitiated God's wrath and
atone for Israel's sin of apostasy.
Okay. So this he he really captures you
know kind of kind of the the urgency and
and the passion and the concern uh to be
centered uh for God. Okay. So there
there many laws actually in the book of
numbers about offerings about vows that
you know I can't cover and we we'll
cover it as we go through the book but
you you have to ask right what is the
point of the order ordering of this
camp? What is the point of their
experience in the wilderness? What is
the point of the offerings? What is the
point of all their vows? What is the
point of doing any of that
if at
the heart of things they're not jealous
for God? They're not passionate for God.
There's no point. There's no point
because in everything that I describe is
precisely about them being made into a
people who are jealous for God. That's
the point. Okay. And so if there's one
thing that angers God to no end, it is
that his own beloved people would fail
to live up to the high calling that he's
given them. So why did he save them? Is
it not that they may fight for his name,
to stand for his glory, to advance his
cause in the world? And so by executing
that evil couple, Finehas reasserted
Israel's loyalty to the Lord God, the
only king over Israel. He would not
allow an Israelite prince to marry a
Moabitete princess, an idoltor,
a non-Christian. So, it's a very quick
one, huh? You know, my my dear youth, my
youth are here, right? Where are my
youth? Okay. And every single year got
BGR problems. Okay. It's the same thing
over and over again. Uni ministry also.
Where are you in River?
Over and over again where Christian kids
want to date non-Christian
boys and girls. I know sometimes these
non-Christian boys and girls are cuter
than the Christian girls and boys in
your youth group. Okay, but you know
what?
What do you live for, man? Cuteness or
for your Lord's glory? No, seriously.
Seriously. That non-Christian girl or
guy that you really like does not love
the Lord your God, is not jealous for
God. Can you be more like fine? Don't
spare anybody. That's not what I mean.
Okay. Some you some you kiss too
literal. Okay.
You have to overcome that temptation. I
know the Bible doesn't say specifically
don't date non-Christians. It says it
better than that. It says it in a
numbers 25 way where if you do date a
non-Christian
somehow or rather a spear is going to
come.
Okay, a spear is going to come. It's not
going to come from me. I'm telling you,
okay, I'm just going to like warn you,
right? But a spear from heaven's going
to come.
Do you really want to test the Lord your
God? Who do you really love, guys? Okay.
So please anytime now you have a friend
or you are tempted and that person say
okay if it's a non-Christian once
they're non-Christian whatever okay it's
them but if that person says I'm a
Christian and they have a non-Christian
boyfriend and girlfriend what do you do?
No don't spear them. Who are you to
spear them? Oh my gosh. You open up book
you open up numbers 25.
Okay.
You preach the whole Old Testament to
them. You do numbers 25 with them. Okay.
Then if you want to be like, you know,
passive aggressive in school, it's like,
"Hi, Zimry."
It's like, "Whoa, dude." Okay. Where's
Cosby?
Yeah. Sorry. I got a lot of like I think
of something called Cosby dying or Cosby
lying or whatever. Okay. Anyway, uh
quick one, quick one since my youth are
here. Okay. Need to apply that point.
Please la over and over again every
single year. I thank God for my youth
leaders by the way who have the patience
of God to talk to you about these
things.
What Israel needs for assurance in the
of life in the land is a faithful
zealous priesthood that will strive for
the purity of the people maintaining the
community's life with Yahweh in their
midst. Precisely what Fihers represents.
By the way, sorry I said something just
now. If you're a non-Christian and you
heard me just kind of warn my youth just
now and if you're slightly offended,
look, the bigger concern is whether or
not you recognize your offense towards
God and where you stand before God. Do
you understand?
It it's not it's not that we hate
non-Christians. Okay? In fact, we're
trying to love on you by telling you the
truth to come to God. Come to God. He is
your life. Whatever you think is life is
not life. He is your life. Okay. So
anyway, going back to the people of God,
repeat my point. What is really needed
for the people of God for the
community's purity are more finesses,
faithful, zealous priests for God.
Okay. And this is precisely how the
covenant community structured as the
camp of Israel works. The outer cam of
12 tribes is atoned for by the inner
camp of the Levites and priests for the
sake of the nation's relation to the
central camp of the glory of God. So
that one as the as the community of God
is kept pure and holy, the blessings of
God will flow uh to throughout the
entire camp of Israel as it applies to
us. Since Christ has made us all priests
by his blood, we must be a faithful and
zealous people who desire to maintain
our church's life with our Lord. You
understand that? That's that's our duty
as members of this church to maintain
the holy concern of God in this
community so that his blessing rather
than his judgment will flow to us and
not only of course to our church but
also to the churches of God that we are
trying to influence in the Clank Valley.
The story of the book of numbers. So I'm
coming to an end now, okay? Is the story
of two generations. If you think about
it, the first generation dies.
The second one learns from the judgment
of the first generation.
The second generation, they are those
that have been forged through the divine
discipline of God in the wilderness. And
it is in that generation we see leaders
like Finehus rising up. Okay. So when
you look at Numbers 26 all the way to
the end of the book, you're starting to
see a different tone and focus in the
book. Although technically the story of
the second generation started in chapter
21, I think structurally speaking, okay,
numbers wants us to view the second
generation as the people reborn because
a new census is taken in numbers 26. So
in terms of mind structure, I see 26 to
36 as that final section. Okay. I think
by bringing up the the census in chapter
26, Numbers is communicating that
Phineas's jealous act in Numbers 25 as
an act of atonement, he concludes the
wilderness era of judgment and death.
Okay? He atones for the people's sins. I
mean, that's the height of rebellion
already where Israel worshiped the Bal
of Pure. Nothing gets worse than that.
Okay? This is just horrendous already.
But there was atonement.
And so now that there was atonement, the
nation can begin a new look forward.
There is hope for a future. So from
Numbers 26 to the end, there'll be no
more journeys, no more rebellions, no
more deaths. The final section of
Numbers will be taken up entirely about
Israel's life in the land. Okay? So it's
and looking forward already to the
future to their promised home. Now the
question for us as we think about the
story of Numbers is this.
What story do we want the next
generation to hear about us? Do you
understand?
Are we the people of the first
generation or the second generation? Of
course, I say that rhetorically, but I
believe we are the people of the second
generation.
But of course, it's very sad when you
look around all over the world. There
are many
churches of God that have fallen into
the sins of the first generation and we
need to pray for them. Ask the Lord to
be merciful to them and to restore them.
What we should really be thinking about
as we think about the story of the
church is to think about how the Lord
has been with us since the time of the
apostles till now. You know, and in
particular for us to think about the
story of the church in Malaysia.
the generations before us and the
generations before that. So many
generations have come and gone. And as
the current generation of God's people,
have we learned from the sins of the
past so as to not repeat them? Have we
really considered what's at stake since
God has brought us
near to himself so much nearer by giving
us Christ and his spirit?
The first 25 chapters of Numbers is a
story of the first generation.
Okay? Story of unbelief,
rebellion,
despair,
death.
Story about how God's holy people did
not live up to their holy status.
To put it in our words, is a church not
being a church.
The failed church.
A people that refuse to trust in the
promises of God. A people who rebelled
against the faithful leaders of God. And
so God judge them and their bodies are
scattered all over the wilderness.
Sometimes I think of the failures of the
New Testament church and wonder how and
why things are the way they are. It's a
bit sad, you know, sometimes pastor
Robin talks about this sometimes, right?
You think about church history. Think
about Malaysian church history. You
wonder how things are so bad. And at
such times, I can only be grateful that
our God is a persevering God and a
long-suffering God. A God who is
faithful to his commitment to raise up a
holy people. A God of hasset and emit
steadfast love and faithfulness. If not
for the preservation of his people, the
church would have no hope,
you know. So I I really don't buy it
when when when Christians think in a
very Armenian way that we have to kind
of make decisions and it's up to us to I
mean I'm simplifying things but you know
that that that mentality where it's
really more reliant on us rather than
the sovereign work of God.
If you study the Old Testament carefully
enough, I think you would have a more
Calvinistic perspective of salvation.
And then ultimately the people of God
can only be the people of God because of
the grace of God and the sovereign work
of God in their lives. By the grace of
God go I.
God shows his mercy and progressively
fulfills his plan until his son came to
bring about ultimate and final atonement
and regeneration for the people of God.
And we are that people. Do you
understand? When when Paul talks about
the church in 1 Corinthians 10, he says
that we are the people of whom the end
of the ages has come.
We're it. We're it. To say that we are
the people of the generation, second
generation, therefore is to say that we
are a people reborn.
We look at the sins of the first
generation. We can discern the problems
there and we refuse to live that way.
We are a people different at the level
of our hearts.
We have learned from the sins of the
previous generation right now. Uh sins
of the previous generation. And what
we're doing right now as we study God's
word over and over and over again and
apply scripture into our lives. That is
precisely what God wants us to do and
his church everywhere to do. He wants us
to grasp his will. And in terms of the
book of numbers as it comes to a close,
we have the example of the daughters of
Zafahad.
Okay, so numbers 27, Numbers 36, they
both start and end with these women. And
when you read these chapters, their
concerns can seem very mundane.
Verse four, uh, chapter chapter 27:4,
they asked for their inheritance among
their father's brothers. Well, the
difficulty was they had no brother, no
sons. So, as daughters, they were
wondering if they can still inherit
their father's lands. And you can see
why that's a significant thing given the
structure of Israel. Because land is not
just land in Israel. Land is about
inheritance. It's about having a place
in the kingdom of God. So, what about my
family? What about my people? Will we
lose our place just because we didn't
have a son? And God makes provisions for
that. Okay.
So you can see that they have
theological concerns as they think about
mundane issues like property and
marriage. You can see how the truth of
God really reshapes the way they think
about really basic human things.
Even though they had not one inch of the
promised land yet, they raised the
issue. Do you understand? They're still
in the wilderness. But they ask
they ask for a place in the land.
These are women of faith. They want to
ensure that their father's house will
always have a place in God's kingdom.
Their children will have a place in
God's kingdom. They didn't simply marry
whoever they wanted to marry. Their
marriages had a corporate concern for
their tribe that was consistent with
God's theological concern for them.
Those of you who know what I'm talking
about should think about this man,
right?
Be a daughter of Zilafa who could see
that their personal desire for marriage
is tied to a corporate concern. Okay.
The daughter of Zilafa revealed that
they firmly believe in God and his word
of promise to bless them and grant them
an inheritance. So by faith they asked,
by faith they married rightly so that
their future inheritance for themselves
and for their families will be secure.
So the second generation presents to us
a generation of faith that ultimately
leads to life and God wants to see that
in us. So the book of numbers ends on
that note.
A generation that is still in the
wilderness, but who hopes and trusts in
the Lord, who will make even the most
basic of decisions
out of faith, trusting in God's design
for his church.
He wants to see us living as his holy
people even as we wait for the glorious
future in heaven. So like Israel of old,
as the modern church, we live in between
the times. We're still waiting for the
final consummation.
Our present experience is actually not
one of the fullness of salvation, but
one of the wilderness. So as you look
around you and live in Malaysia in the
Clang Valley, does it feel more
wilderness-like or do you feel right at
home? If you feel right at home, my God,
you're in danger, man. because we are a
called out people. This is not our home.
We're only passing through.
We're so to speak making a spiritual
pilgrimage to our heavenly glory.
Both Jesus and the apostles warned us
that we will face many trials, okay, as
we go through this life. And if you
think about it, that's the whole point
that in this life, the tested genuiness
of our faith will be proven.
But we're not going straight to heaven
yet. Right now, we have the opportunity
to be God's people in the wilderness, to
face our enemies, and to prevail.
And as we journey towards our promised
land, like the people of old, remember
God is with us.
John 1 verse 14, the word became flesh
and tabernacled among us. Remember that
our God, as you see in the Old
Testament, is a God of the wilderness.
He doesn't stay up high in heaven,
minding his own business, doing whatever
he wants to do like all the other gods.
Our God comes down. Our God suffers with
his people. Our God perseveres with us.
Just imagine our Lord God persevering
with the people of Israel that you read
about here until this very day. He's
still persevering.
He is still faithful to his promises and
his sovereign plans and he will
accomplish what he has begun.
Our Lord Jesus himself has entered our
world and fully experienced the
suffering and temptation of life that we
experience. He has gone through the
wilderness so that by his power and
grace we may have the strength to walk
in obedience today.
So church,
what are you afraid of?
What is holding you back
from fulfilling your ministry? What is
enticing you to abandon your promised
hope? What is eating away at your
strength to serve the Lord?
And in that same vein, what is feeding
you that will cause you to long for a
bowl of stew instead of your promised
inheritance? What is causing you to
question your allegiance to the Lord
Jesus Christ? What is it
like finding us? Find it and kill it. Be
jealous for the Lord. Do not be like the
sinful generations of the past because
that is not who we are.
Who are we church? We are the church of
the Lord Jesus Christ. So let us trust
in him doing all that we can and face
every obstacle together as his people.
So may the Lord bless our time as we
study the book of Numbers together. Let
me pray. Our heavenly father, we thank
you for speaking to us, for causing us
to reflect deeply about our lives and
all that you're doing, for causing us to
see what a wonder it is to be your
people in this
wilderness. So give us the strength, oh
Lord, keep us faithful to the very end.
And may we always, always raise the
banner of Christ, no matter where we
are. In Jesus name we pray.
I thank I thank God that we are under
his leadership
that we are now under this man of war
that has defeated death for us.
So we are to remain in his camp by
submitting to his leadership but not
like a like a holy huddle
right but we are to spread his will
and let God's word dominate in everyone
that we see. So please stand and sing
with us.
The grace of God has reached for me
and pulled me from the raging sea.
And I am safe on the solid
ground.
The Lord is our salvation.
I will not fail when darkness falls.
His strength will help me till these
walls.
I see the dawn of the rising
sun.
The Lord is my salvation.
Who is like the Lord our God?
Strong to save faithful
in love. My dad is faith and the
victory.
Lord is my salvation.
Where is our hope?
My hope is hidden in the Lord.
He plows his promise of his word.
When winter fades, I know spring will
come.
The Lord is my salvation.
In times of wait, times of need.
And I know lost when I am weak.
I know his grace will renew these
things.
The Lord is my salvation.
Who is
the Lord of God?
Strong to save faithful
in love. My death is great and a victory
one. The Lord is our salvation.
And when I reach my final day,
he will not leave me in the grave,
but I will rise. He will call me home.
The Lord is my salvation.
Who is like the Lord our God?
Strong to save faithful.
My death is faith and the victory
one. The Lord is my salvation.
Glory be to God the Father.
Glory be to God the Son.
Glory be to God the Spirit.
The Lord is our salvation.
Glory be to God the Father.
Glory be to God the Son.
Glory be to God the Spirit.
The Lord is our salvation.
The Lord is our salvation.
The Lord is our salvation.
Blessed be our Lord and Savior. Amen.
Please be seated.
Now church, the Apostle Paul teaches us
that what God did to his people in
Numbers happened for us. Right? Every
page of the book of Numbers was written
down for us. It wasn't written for that
generation in the wilderness. Their
bodies fell. It was too late for them,
but it was written down for us. And so,
we ignore these pages at our own peril.
So I call on us as Jerome has already
said to the diligent study and
reflection on the scriptures so that we
may learn to love the Lord with all our
heart, mind, and soul. May we heed its
warnings. May we be encouraged by God's
faithfulness and be empowered to fulfill
the Lord's commission.
Now, as we look ahead to a big move that
we hope to make in the years ahead to a
larger building, I'd like to give you an
update on where we are in our
fundraising for the building. So, we are
now well into the month of January, and
that means we are just weeks away from
signing the sale and purchase agreement
for the building. Now, the good news is
that we have hit the fundraising target
that we need to pay the down payment,
the signing of the S&P.
Okay, it's the good news.
The less good news is that we still need
to close the gap of 1.95 million. It's a
pinkish section of the bar as well as
get a bank loan approved for the payment
of the balance. Now, neither of these
two things is certain yet, and so I call
on us to continue prayerfully
fundraising to raise these funds that we
need to complete the purchase.
Fundraising in growth groups also is
resuming after a break over the
Christmas and New Year. And we have the
first GG fundraising event of the year
happening organized by Pujong Gigi on
the 24th of January. So do keep them in
prayer. And if you have friends staying
in that area or family and you'd like to
invite them, please let Reuben, their GG
leader, know.
As much as 21 for 21 fundraising is a
priority for us members and candidates,
please also remember to be regular and
faithful in giving your pledges so that
we can ensure the current ministry that
we're doing can continue. Also, a quick
reminder from our friends at the Gospel
Growth Fellowship. If you are intending
to participate in fellow workers
conference at the end of the month,
please do sign up so that they can make
their plans and arrangements that they
need for the conference. And they also
wanted us to know that they have a group
pricing package available. It's called a
gospel gang deal.
Okay.
Um here's how it works. So you look for
at least three people who are first
timers to fellow workers conference and
you can sign up as a group of five and
you will each enjoy a discount of 50
ringgit and most importantly of course
your friends will get to appreciate this
gospel that we have come to love and
cherish and has been passed down to us.
So final reminder, FWC is happening on
the 29th to 31st of January at Hotel
Escclesio EPO. Now, as we come to the
end of the formal part of our gathering,
here is a question that you can use to
get your reflection started as you head
off for lunch. How do you see God's
salvation in the judgment of especially
his own people in Numbers? What does
this teach you about what it means to be
God's people? So let's end our gathering
then with the words of Hebrews 3:12-15.
I'm going to read the words in black and
then I will get you to respond with the
words in red. And as you do so, please
address these words to one another.
Okay? So you can have a look at them and
let me read in black and then let's all
read the words in red. Take care
brothers lest there be in any of you an
evil unbelieving heart leading you to
fall away from the living God. But
exhort one another every day as long as
it is called today that none of you may
be hardened by the deceitfulness of sin.
For we have come to share in Christ. If
indeed we hold our original confidence
firm to the end. As it is said today, if
you hear his voice, do not harden your
hearts as in the rebellion. Amen.
the groundath
I brea
but I can't see
yes I
that changes everything
that sets the captives free.
I hope the resurrect me
and the power of God for all who
believe.
I know the greatness of your victory.
