Buffing with the Beall Buffing System (Woodturning How-to)

The Beall Buffing System is a method of finishing that produces a spectacular finish that begs to be held

the system includes a tripoli wheel and compound,

a white diamond wheel and compound

and a carnauba wheel and wax bar

the system also includes a quick change adapter

keep in mind - if you're going to buff on your lathe

you'll need a morse taper buff adapter or a long buffing adapter

when buffing with your lathe be sure to follow the manufacturer's safety

guidelines, wear a face shield, and grip the workpiece securely

before buffing we need to prepare the wood

first, make sure it's sanded to 320 grit and is free of any dust

keep in mind, if the wood you're buffing is a softer wood apply a sanding sealer to

the workpiece and allow it to dry prior to buffing

let's set up the system - start by threading the buffing adapter onto the

lathe, then thread the tripoli wheel into the buffing adapter

now turn the lathe on setting the speed to around 1,500 rpms

now get a piece of 80 grit sandpaper and aggressively sand the Tripoli wheel to

remove any loose fabric strands

now let's use the tripoli compound simply rub the bar against the wheel

making sure to load up a generous amount

take your project and buff all of the surfaces against the wheel with steady pressure

now turn off the lathe and remove the tripoli wheel

repeating the same process

install and sand the white diamond wheel then apply the white diamond compound

now buff your project, making sure to cover the entire surface

next, with the lathe turned off simply remove the white diamond wheel

now install and sand the carnauba wheel

once sanded, make sure to only apply a small amount of carnauba wax to the wheel

only a small amount is needed

now finished buffing your project and you now have a durable beautiful finish

that begs to be held
