FULL TRANSCRIPT

0:00

hey this is Ralph and in this video I

0:02

want to go over using multiple layers in

0:04

Flash I just want to get a quick review

0:05

of that so I've got a new Flash movie

0:07

set up nothing on the stage and there's

0:09

only one layer and there it's an empty

0:11

key frame so there's nothing on that key

0:13

frame I'm going to go and create a

0:14

couple quick layers and on layer on the

0:17

top layer here I'll go ahead and put in

0:19

a uh square if I can spell

0:24

it next layer I'll put a

0:27

circle and the bottom layer I'll put a

0:31

star so now I have three layers I'm

0:34

going to click on frame one of my square

0:37

layer and I will

0:39

draw a square I'm going to go to frame

0:43

one of my circle layer use my oval tool

0:46

change the

0:48

color and I'll

0:51

draw an oval then I'll go to frame one

0:54

of my star

0:55

layer let's change the color again

1:00

choose a poly star over on the

1:02

properties panel um I'll go to Tool

1:05

settings options star five point stars

1:10

fine draw

1:12

Star and I'll select it and just move it

1:14

so we can see all the objects so now I

1:17

have a square a circle and a star and

1:19

each one is on a separate layer if I

1:22

click

1:22

on my key frame for my circle layer my

1:26

circle or oval is selected if I click on

1:29

frame one of my star layer my star

1:31

selected whenever your flash movie is

1:34

going to have multiple parts and it

1:35

pretty much always

1:36

will you want to get in the habit of

1:38

using multiple layers especially if

1:40

they're going to be animating in

1:42

different ways if we were to put all of

1:44

these shapes by the way they're called

1:45

merge shapes but if we had all of these

1:47

shapes together on one on one layer you

1:51

really run the potential of these shapes

1:55

merging into one of other uh one another

1:58

and it really can kind of mess them up

2:00

so it's very beneficial that each one is

2:02

on a separate layer now if you get

2:04

overwhelmed by looking at a bunch of

2:06

layers at once you can hide them by just

2:08

clicking on the little view button here

2:10

the eye so I've hidden two of my three

2:12

layers so that I can only see the one

2:14

that I want to work with and then I can

2:16

turn those back on when I want to see

2:18

them

2:20

again now since they're layers they can

2:22

be treated as such I can go ahead and

2:24

move

2:26

these so that they are overlapping oops

2:30

let me show you another little problem

2:32

let me control Z to undo

2:34

this and the layer that you're working

2:37

on should be the unlocked layer so if I

2:41

select frame one now my square is

2:43

selected so I can move that very

2:44

carefully I'm going to click on my

2:46

circle and I can move just that and very

2:48

carefully I can click on my star and

2:50

just move that but that's pretty risky

2:52

there so I often advise locking the

2:55

layers down except the one you want to

2:57

manipulate so then you won't

2:58

accidentally mess up one of your your

3:00

previous or one of your other layers so

3:03

keep just one layer unlocked at a time

3:05

to minimize um

3:07

mistakes so now you can see the star is

3:10

behind the oval the oval is behind the

3:11

square and I can rearrange my layers

3:14

just by clicking and dragging so now my

3:16

star is on top and sure enough the star

3:19

is on top so you can just click and drag

3:21

your layers to put them in the order

3:23

that you want you can lock down the

3:25

layers that you don't want to edit and

3:27

you can hide the layers that you don't

3:28

want to see at that particular moment

3:30

they're still part of the movie they're

3:31

just hidden from view while you're

3:34

working there's a little button down

3:36

here to also create folders so you can

3:38

create folders for

3:41

um groups of layers that are related as

3:44

we create some bigger flash movies this

3:46

is really going to come in handy and

3:47

it's pretty easy just click the button

3:49

to create a new folder and then you can

3:54

take your objects your layers and you

3:57

can move them into that particular

3:59

folder so now all of these are inside of

4:01

a folder and I can collapse that so I

4:03

still have my three folders but they're

4:05

just not taking up as much room in my

4:08

timeline
