RODE Wireless PRO - Beginner's Tutorial - Secrets nobody ever told you.
FULL TRANSCRIPT
[Music]
welcome to this complete beginners guide
for the road Wireless Pro in this
beginners tutorial I'm going to go
through everything you need to know to
get the best audio from every situation
in the first section I'm going to go
through the road Wireless Pro units
themselves so you know what all the
buttons and everything does on them so
you can manage your audio when you're
out on the field in the second part of
this video I'm we're going to go through
the road Central app that you have on
your computer and that is where you
access your recordings you can access
all the more advanced settings you have
on these Road Wireless Pro system in the
third section I'm going to go through
how I set up my road Wireless Pro
together with one of my Sony a7s 3
cameras so you can see how I set this up
to get the best audio every single time
so I get the audio baked into my videos
I don't need to synchronize that in post
and I'm actually not following the
manual that road provides when I do this
and I'm going to show you why because I
would like to have a setup so I minimize
the amount of work that I need to put in
when I do my editing and throughout this
video I'm going to give you some really
nice tips and tricks because some of the
best features of the road Wireless Pro
while those are the same that can
completely destroy your audio if you're
not doing it correct now it's time to
dig in and start the beginnner tutorial
for the road Wireless
Pro so let's start the part one where
we're going to go through all these
units you can see what all the buttons
and everything it's doing so you know
that we have two cases this one that one
is for our accessories and then we have
the other one where our units for the
road Wireless Pro is stored and this is
also a charging case and at the back of
this pouch here we have a little button
and if we press that one we can see how
much charge we have inside the charging
case and this little LED lights up
differently depending on how much charge
we have in the internal battery and I
have displayed that here on the screen
so let's start off with a road Wireless
pro receiver so when we take out Road
Wireless pro receiver it starts up
automatically at the top here we can see
this little battery icon that one is
indicating the charge of the receiver
next it it says m the m indicates that
we have a mono or merged audio so the
audio that we are recording is divided
up equally between channel number one
and two which means the left and the
right Channel and Below M we see one and
two those two are indicating the status
of the transmitters number one and two
but those are stored there in the
charting case that's why we don't see
any information there yet at the bottom
here we see an icon that is indicating
what the left button is doing and then
we have another icon that is indicating
what the right button is doing and then
you can also see that we get another
feature if we press and hold both of
those buttons on this side we have a
USBC Port this USBC Port is of course
used when we're going to put it into the
charging case and it's important that
you actually put it in here where it
says RX in the charging case because
that is where the receiver is supposed
to go and if if you connect this USBC
port to your computer you get a digital
audio feed from this system the 3.5 mm
that we have here that is the one that
we are connecting to our camera when we
connect the receiver directly into the
camera so we get the audio baked in
together with the video on the other
side we just have the logo of the road
Wireless pro receiver and at the top
here we have a road logo and that is the
road button and we can program that in
the road Central app where we want that
to do and we're going to go through that
when we get into the road Central app so
this is everything there is with the
receiver now let's take one of the
transmitters instead so we can go
through everything we have on that one
at the top here we have two LEDs the one
to the left that is flashing blue that
one is indicating how it's connected to
the receiver and because the receiver is
stored here in the charging case that
one is flashing and indicating that it's
not connected the red LED that one is
indicating that the internal recording
is on so we are recording everything
automatically in into the internal
recording of the transmitter I've set my
transmitter up to start to record
automatically whenever you take it out
from the charging case and I'm going to
show you how to set that up when we get
into the road Central app that's
everything we have at the front here
when we take a look at the side on this
side we just have the road Wireless Pro
logo at the bottom of the transmitter
this is where we had the road button
again and that one is again something
that we can program in the road Central
app on the other side here we have a USB
C port and if you plug this USBC into
your computer you can download the audio
files from the road Wireless Pro
transmitter and you can also charge the
transmitter of course when you plug a
USBC charger into this port here at the
top of the road wiress Pro transmitter
here we have a record button so if we
have not the automatic recording turned
on then we press that button to start
and stop recording I don't like to use
that one because if I film someone else
then I don't want want them to
accidentally press that button and stop
the recording so I have disabled that
and I'm going to show you how to do that
in the road Central app as well and here
we have the built-in microphone and next
to that one we have the 3.5 mm plug
where we plug in our lav L microphone
and talking about the levier microphone
I'm going to show you how to assemble
that one and it's a little bit tricky to
get it exactly the way that road
actually intended it to be so I'm going
to show you exactly how to get that set
up now I just would like to show you
what's happening if I take out both of
the transmitters from the charging case
and if we now take a look at the
receiver we can see that we get data
from both transmitters here at the left
here we see the charging level of the
receiver the transmitter and the
transmitter and the icon next to the
battery indicator that is indicating the
connectivity level we have between the
transmitter and the receiver and then we
have the number one and two and that is
indicating for transmitter number one
and transmitter number two and then the
Little Red Dot all the way to the right
well that one is indicating that
internal recording is currently on for
that transmitter and now when we have
taken all the transmitters and receiver
out from the charging case we can
actually see that here it says tx1 tx2
and RX and that is indicating where the
unit should be placed the RX that's
where the receiver should always be
placed and tx1 and tx2 that is where you
place the transmitters to know if it's
the transmitter number one or
transmitter number two and where you
should put it well that's not so easy to
know because you don't have any markings
on these ones you basically just have to
put one of them into one of the slots
and see which one that disappears from
the receiver and now I can see that it
was transmitter number one that
disappeared so then that should be in
transmitter number one slot and that is
just because I would like to know which
one I'm using and which one I have
stored where because I maybe set up
different settings on transmitter number
one and two in the road Central app so
that's why it's just good to know where
you have them but it doesn't really
matter matter where you put them if you
have the same setting on them so in this
accessory pouch here I have stored at
top here my USBC cord and the TRS cable
we actually get a lot thicker USBC cord
as well that is the high power high
speed one personally I only use this
little thinner one because it charges
fast enough and the transfer speed is
fast enough as well as a videographer
I'm used to transfer files that are
hundreds and hundreds of gigabytes so
just transfer a little audio file that
takes 15 seconds it doesn't really
matter and this thin cable well it is a
little bit thinner so it's a little bit
more Sleek so that's why I used that one
and that one I just stored at home and
this TRX cable that is the one we
connect between the receiver and the
camera and by the way TRS is just
because if we take a look at this chord
we can see that we have two black lines
here that's because here the first
section before the first black line that
is the tip then we have the middle one
that is ring and then the top is the
sleeve it's not the black rings that
you're counting it's actually the metal
pieces between the black rings so when
we have two black rings that means that
we have three metal pieces this tip ring
sleeve if we have three black rings that
means that we have four metal pieces
it's tip ring ring sleeve but this is
the tip ring sleeve and the difference
between those is also that tip ring
sleeve that is used when you have a left
and the right channel the tip ring ring
sleeve that one is used whenever you
have a unit like for example a phone
where you also have a microphone because
then you have the left right and a
microphone as an accessory you also get
this little thing it's actually a little
clip and a magnet and this can be used
for example if you would like to put the
transmitter here on your chest then you
can put the magnet at the back for
example or you can do it the other way
around but to do that for some reason
Road didn't make this little clip
magnetic it's plastic so you can't
attach a magnet here so you need to
attach this little extra clip and to do
that then you just take it like this and
then you slide that one on from the
bottom
up like that so now we have a magnetic
thing so we can just put it here for
example the thing is that it looks kind
of stupid because it's pretty heavy so I
usually don't have it like that I use a
levier microphone instead but sometimes
if you just need to do something quick
you can just attach it in the Le h of
your shirt or something or you can
attach the magnet at the back personally
I don't understand why they didn't make
this one magnetic from the beginning one
good thing is that even if you have this
attached you can actually put it into
the charting case and it all fits well
so now it's the time for the alligator
clip and this one is used to attach the
lav L microphone the lav 2 microphone
that you get together with a road
Wireless Pro kit because when you get it
it just looks like this and this is kind
of flim so you can't attach that like
this so you need to attach this
alligator clip so what road want you to
do that is to First Take a look where do
you want to attach this is it going to
be attached that way or should it be
attached that way if you would like to
attach it that way well then the road
logo should be correctly and if you
would like to attach it the other way
then you should assemble it with a road
logo upside down so for me I'm going to
do it that way so I'm going to have the
road logo right then we're going to just
take the microphone and then just make
sure that you have the correct side of
the microphone aiming outwards because
the microphone phone has one side that
has the openings and one side that
doesn't have any openings and it's
important that this side without
openings is inside towards the Talon
towards the shirts or the fabric and the
other side with the holes that side is
the one that is going to be aimed
outwards or maybe upwards towards the
mouth if you don't have the option to
have it outward so now take this clip
and take the microphone and slide it in
here from behind twist it so it's
attached like
this and now what to do with a cord
because if you have it like this and you
just pull it the microphone will come
loose we're GNA try to avoid that so
attach this one again then we're going
to take the chord we're going to open up
the clip and put the cord in at the back
so now we're going to have a loop that
goes like this then we going to go back
on the back side and now we're going to
take this chord to go into this little
piece so we're going to put it
in and then we're going to take the cord
and then twist it
backwards so it goes into that little
crack and after we have done that then
we can just adjust the length by pulling
that down a little bit so we have the
length we would like to have and now
this little lavier microphone is assembl
the way that road intended to so now
this one is ready to be used at the
other end of this microphone you have
this section and this is a screw on ring
that you have here and this ring is one
of the deal breakers with the system
because you me mechanically going to
attach it to the transmitter so it
doesn't come loose but this is also
where people do this completely wrong
and even in the manual Road advis you to
do this incorrectly let's check the
manual and let's do what it says in the
manual so you can see what I mean it
says that the 3.5 mm inputs on the two
transmitters features the Locking
threads for microphones that feature
locking connectors such as the included
lavalier 2 so this is the lavalier 2
microphone that we get this allows you
to securely attach your microphones it
can't be accidentally unplugged while in
use which is fantastic all wireless
microphone systems should have this
feature simply insert a microphone 3.5
mm Jack okay let's do that like that
then twist the golden lock ring
clockwise to secure the cable in place
okay let's do that twist this lock
ring to secure the cable in place
reverse reverse the process to
disconnect okay and now people think
that oh now we have connected these
securely and it will be fantastic but
the thing is that when you have done it
accordingly to the manual and someone is
just pulling the string a little bit the
microphone cable is coming out from the
transmitter because Road has done a flaw
in the design of this when I created
this microphone plug what you need to do
is to take this one the Locking screw
and you have to tighten this because
what's happening is that when you have
it like this and you plug it in and then
you screw this locking screw what's
happening is that when I screw that one
onto the transmitter then it's
unscrewing itself from this cord so look
here when I screw this on it's getting
unscrewed from the cable so it comes
loose so what we need to do is that you
need to take this one screw it onto this
plug and it should never be designed
like this so you could actually unscrew
this one it should be locked onto this
one and then loose you could screw it
but not so you can unscrew it so what
you need to do is to you have to screw
this tight together and now you can take
it plug it in and you're not screwing
this Golden Ring you're going to screw
the entire cord like this or you screw
the transmitter like this and when you
do that now it's attached now it will
never ever come loose but you need to do
this correctly because if you don't
you're probably going to end up with a
transmitter attached here at the back of
yourself for the talent and and what's
happening now is that you're going to
get all the audio just through this
microphone that is placed at the back of
the talent and you will get a terrible
audio so make sure to do this correctly
so now when we are having our focus on
this transmitter and lavier microphone
let's also take a look at some other
accessories we have we get these little
foam covers as well these ones are going
to be attached at the top of this
lavalier microphone whenever you're
outside if there is the slightest wind
that you can notice then put this little
furry on instead that you get to get it
with the kit so just take this off it's
going to be easy to lose that one
because it's not attached very hard so
then if it's windy just put that one on
instead like this this is the next tip
so when you have this attached like this
and someone maybe just tou touches this
one so it comes off and then you just
put it on like this and then you're
going to record audio because you're a
little bit stressed of course there is a
big risk that this is not working and
let me show you the reason for this
because now when we have it attached
like this let me take off the cover so I
can show you what I mean look here now
this microphone is Twisted the wrong way
now we have the opening at the backs
side that's why you need to take off any
kind of cover if this one comes off so
you can make sure you put this back the
correct way where the microphone
openings outwards because if not again
you're going to get ruined audio and you
actually get this little furry to the
onboard microphone that you have on the
transmitter as well and to to attach
this if we take a look here we can see
that we have these two white dots on the
sides here if we take a look at the
transmitter here we can see that we have
those two little knobs here on the
plastic so those are going to be lined
up together you line it up like this and
then you twist it like that a quarter of
a turn and now this one is super
attached that one will never come off
and then to detach it just twist it that
way and then it comes off so the first
that is attached to this microphone is a
lot better attached compared to how it's
attached to the lavalier microphone now
let's take a look at the buttons of the
road Wireless pro receiver and then I'm
referring to the two buttons that we
have at the bottom here so you know how
to use them with the left button we are
accessing the gain controls so now let's
press the left button once we can see
that we have set it up to camera and to
my A7 S3 my Sony camera here I can't do
anything else and it doesn't matter if I
press this again we won't get any
anything else and this is the bug that
the name of my camera is actually
disappearing if I press that button
twice but that's just how it is it's
probably going to be corrected in a
later firmware now if I press the right
button instead when I press it once I'm
going to access the settings for
transmitter number one so now it says
that I'm going to pair it and that is
just because transmitter number one is
in the charging case it's transmitter
number two that I've taken out here and
it's transmitter number two that we are
connected to so to access the setting
for transmitter number two we press the
right button twice one this is for
transmitter number one two this is for
transmitter number two and we can also
see that whenever we press this button
if you don't remember if we press it
once it's going to say number one there
press it one more time and it says
number two so now it's transmitter
number two that we are connected to that
is live that we get the audio from so if
we go to transmitter number two and then
we press the left button we can toggle
between Auto and dynamic that is the
gain assist setting and I'm going to go
through what that is when we get into
the road Central app and I leave this
one on auto for 90 to 95% of the time
and dynamic for the rest of it I cannot
turn off the auto gain assist feature in
that receiver and I actually don't
advise you to turn that off because it's
just an amazing feature that puts so
much on autopilot if you press the right
button one two three times we get to the
game setting so here I can toggle
between what kind of thing I would like
to have attached and connected to it
here we have the gain mode for camera
for headphones for headset or manual if
I do manual I tap set or click set and
now if I take the left one I'm going to
get to gain settings if I then instead
take the headphones or the headset then
instead I'm going to get the volume
settings for the volume out here on the
receiver so I can get a good audio in my
headsets or my headphones the difference
between those two is that if I have a
headset that is headphones with a
microphone and if you have that plugged
in and you have this set to headset then
you actually get a third microphone into
this system so then I can use the
transmitter number one transmitter
number two and a headset that I connect
to myself and when we get into the road
Central app I'm going to go through and
show you how the audio is distributed
between the left and the right channel
whenever you have a headset connected so
now we're going to set this up so it's
set up for a camera again like like that
set and this is also a bug that
sometimes even if you do this you're not
getting the camera set up so what you
need to do is that you need to plug this
one back into the charging case and then
when you can see it's connected then you
can take it out and now when you turn it
on again and you toggle between here and
then you can change this one to camera
set okay and now when I press the left
button we are to the camera again and
hopefully Road will fix this in a later
update of the firmware as well now it's
time to head in to the road Central app
and the first thing we need to do that
is to download the road Central app to
the computer and I'm going to drop a
link to the road Central app in the
description box below so you can
download the latest version the next
thing is to connect the road Wireless
Pro to the computer and there are
different ways to do that first of all
we need to use a USBC to USBC chord so
when you're going to connect to Road
Wireless Pro to the computer you can
either connect just one of these devices
via USBC Port into the computer but the
better way to do it that is to connect
the entire charging case to the computer
so then you're going to use this port
here at the backs side and then you
connect this one to the computer and now
after we have connected it we get all
the units to show up here on the left
hand side so here at the top you can see
that we have the case itself it has
version
1.0.2 it says also that it's up to date
and if you click this little Cog wheel
at top we can see that we can check for
available firmwares so it's checking and
we can see that we are all up to date
when I first got this system from Road I
actually plug it into my phone and then
the phone discovered some firmware
updates and I updated it through the
phone but then when I have 2 minutes
after plugged it into my computer the
computer actually found a newer firmware
so I plugged it back to the phone to
check if there was just a release just 2
seconds after but it wasn't so the
computer is more secure to update the
firmware because then you know that
you're going to get the latest firmware
when you update the firmware of the road
Wireless Pro you sometimes get new
features in the road Central app so it's
important to keep that one up to date as
well and I'm going to drop a link to the
road Central app in the description box
below as well so you can download it
because sometimes it can be a little bit
hard and tricky to find on Road's
website and also going to drop links to
everything else that I'm talking about
in this video down below and if you like
this video so far please consider giving
it a thumbs up and if you like it a lot
please buy me a cup of coffee with a
link that is below as well if this video
gave you value because that would be
highly appreciated and also I actually
have launched a newsletter that you can
sign up to as well if you would like to
get latest news about important and nice
things so let's go back to Road Central
app so now we can see that it's all up
to date we can close this one and here
we can also see that we can Factor reset
the system we can also select what
monitor outp speakers I would like to
use when I'm using the road Central app
local recordings this this is so the
road Central app can actually pick up
local recordings from your computer
whenever you have that save there
somewhere I'm not using that one so I'm
not an expert on that and we can also
see that we have enabled that optional
firmware updates is enabled then if we
go to the RX that stands for receiver so
let's start at the top RX we can see the
charging level here and here we can see
the routing of the audio so let's unplug
this again from the case when we do that
it's going to unplugg from the road
Central app also now we can see that
here on the screen it says M that means
that the audio is merged if I use one
microphone that audio is going to be
stored both on the left and the right
channel if I use both of these
transmitters then the audio from both of
them is going to be split up equally
between the left and the right channel
as well so if I use only one I would
like to use merged or mono if I use two
of these ones I would like to change
that to stereo and the reason for that
is that if I'm sitting here and I'm
talking and then I have someone there
that I'm interviewing or working
together with or I'm filming two people
it's very likely that those two people
are not talking equally loud but I
probably would like to have that audio
equally loud when I create the video if
I have that to split stereo one of these
microphones is going to be recorded To
the Left Channel and the other one to
the right Channel and then I can adjust
that volume in my editing software and
then I can merge that to get in post I
get a good level from both people so
let's plug this into the charting case
again so we get it into Road Central app
so now they pop up here again let's
select the RX for the road Wireless pro
receiver and here we can just change
this so we have merged then it's exactly
what I said before when it's merged
transmitter one and transmitter 2 will
go into left and right equally and if
you have connected a headset to the
receiver then the audio from all three
microphones will be equally split up on
left and right channel if we instead
take split then we get one of the
transmitters To the Left Channel
transmitter two to the right Channel or
if we have this headset connected well
then we get the audio from transmitter
One and Two To the Left Channel and the
audio from the headset to the right
Channel and when we have the safety
channel the audio will work more or less
the same way as it does in merge you're
going to record both transmitters
together so you can split them but to
the left channel is going to record both
transmitter one and two in the standard
audio level but on the right channel is
going to have a safety track where both
transmitter 1 and two is going to be
recorded about with 10 DB lower audio
I've actually very frequently used this
safety channel on other systems like the
DJI mic that doesn't have 32bit float
internal recording because if something
was clipping I couldn't recover it if I
didn't have a lower recorded audio that
I then could just bring up a little bit
so I could save audio when I use this
system where I one have 32bit float and
I also have Auto gain assist well then I
don't really need the safety Channel
anymore so I use merged if I'm recording
myself or just one person if I'm
recording audio from two transmitters
then I change to split again and if I
would like to change to split I can just
click apply then we can see that we get
two of these audio indicators we can
actually change that directly here in
the receiver as well with take a look at
this receiver here at the bottom we can
see that it says
m/s and it goes aligned to both of these
buttons so if we press and hold both
buttons we go into this menu where we
can actually change if we would like to
split safety or merged and then now I
would like to record just one person so
let's take it to merged and then we take
okay so now it's merged if I would like
to change it press and hold change to
split set yes and now we can see that we
only get audio from one transmitter into
one channel if I unplug the second
transmitter and that one gets connected
now we can see that we have the audio
from both transmitters goes into one
channel each so if I'm talking into this
one you can see that that one is
reacting more if I'm taking the other
one we can get that one if we now change
this from split to merged instead we're
going to see that we get both of them at
identical into both channels instead and
if we change this instead so we go
to uh safety Channel then you can see
that one of these two indicators is
actually lower than the other one and
that is how it's recording the safety
channel so now let's go to this preset
here it's where we can set manual to
have the manual one or we can go to
headphones or we can change to headset
now let's take a look how you can set
this up to work perfectly together with
your camera let's set this to preset for
camera here we can see that it says Road
from the beginning this is the default
Road has whenever you buy the road
Wireless Pro and here you can select
your camera so just press the plus
button and then we select well I have a
Sony camera and my Sony is the A7 S3 and
then I press next and here I actually
get a link to the setting that road
recommend that you should have in your
camera I actually don't have that
setting because I don't think that that
is perfect and I'm going to show you why
but to get that you just press that link
and here we can see that for my son 87s
3 Road recommends that I should set the
audio recording level to one but I'm
going to show you why I don't have that
because I would like to reduce my
postprocess workflow so now instead
let's go back here and I click add and
now we can see that we have my Sony A7
S3 here and after we have added that if
we take the receiver here again and we
take it out from the charting case and
now if we press this button bottom left
again we can see that we can actually
toggle between the road and the Zone A7
S3 so now when I've added my camera then
I can delete the road so I don't have
that one when I'm going to toggle
between different modes then we have the
dim for backlight setting I have set
that one to Auto and that's what you saw
on the receiver that it dims down so
it's not as bright you can set that one
to off so it doesn't dim at all or you
can have it to Auto the next thing is
that you're going to set what that road
button on the receiver is going to do I
have that set to record and then you may
be going to say but mat why do you have
it set to record because you said that
you have set up the transmitters to
start recording automatically whenever
you take it out from the charging case
well that is correct but what's going to
happen when I've set this one to record
is when I've set a scene up we are on
set and I have attached the microphones
to my Talons they are recording
whenever we are ready to start shoot I
can actually press this road button on
my receiver on my camera and what's
going to happen then is that the road
system is going to start record from
that point on a new audio file you can
also set that one to your set a marker
on the current audio file I just find it
so handy to have that okay now we're
going to start to shoot let's press that
button once and we get a new audio file
so I know that that is whenever we start
shooting and here we have the plug in
detect I have that one set to on if you
have it set to off nothing's going to
happen but when you have set it to on
and you have connected this 3.5 mm cord
between your camera and the road
wireless receiver I'm going to show you
how to do that later the receiver will
automatically turn off whenever I turn
off the camera and when I turn on the
camera the receiver will turn on again
however that will only work if you have
the road Wireless pro receiver turned
off whenever you plug this into your
camera if you have the road Wireless pro
receiver turned on whenever you plug
this into your camera the turn off
feature will not work so for it to work
turn off the road Wireless Pro plug it
into the camera and then you can turn on
the camera and the road Wireless pro
receiver will turn on when you turn on
the camera and turn off when you turn
off the camera next thing that is time
code and honestly I'm not going to go
through that because it's way too
complicated and it's also not compatible
with my Sony A7 S3 cameras and it's not
even compatible with Final Cut Pro and
it's not compatible with Adobe premere
either so for me personally I'm not even
going to touch that the next thing is
the clock we can update the clock here
if you want to I have never seen that
this has been out of sync but you can do
that you can start Diagnostics as well
now we are done with the receiver the
next thing we're going to go through
that is the transmitters so these are
the recordings we have on board and we
can see what date was recorded we can
see the audio file number and we can
also see that it's a 30 2 bit float
audio and we can see that the audio
recorder was 1 minute and 6 seconds when
we click that one as I did then we can
play the audio from up here we just drag
this one to go back and forth and here
we can set color codes to these
different recordings if you would like
to do that for some reason you can also
rename the audio file here and here we
can click this little Cog wheel then we
access the same settings as before click
the Cog again and go back here we have
the export settings this is important to
know how it actually works when you open
this up it says custom and it says 24bit
PCM and it's very tempting to maybe
change that but what the road Central
app will do is that it's going to
normalize the audio so if you have audio
that should have been clipped in
recording you have into your camera but
it's not clipped internally because you
have recorded in 32-bit float well when
you used the 24bit PCM the road Central
app will normalize that audio first it
doesn't clip and then you will get a
24bit file exported so that actually
works really well so you don't need to
do so much in post for the loudness you
can if you want to if you're going to
post on YouTube select minus 14 lfs and
then we can select export and you select
where you would like to export it to I
would like to export it to my download
folder and then it goes pretty quickly
to export and now I can access that in
my download folder I can also export the
files by going into finder and here I
will find the road wet Pro as well one
is the transmitter one and one is the
transmitter two so you can grab them
from here as well one thing that you can
do though is that you can't delete these
files from the transmitters even if I
try to delete it I can't and if I right
click there is no delete option and the
same thing when you are in the road
Central app there is no way to delete a
file it's just not there so what you
need to do to delete it that is to
delete all of them there isn't really
any reason to delete single files like
that because you have 32 gbyte of
internal storage that is enough for
about 40 hours and whenever it's full
it's going to start overwrite the oldest
recordings and if you would like to
export a 32-bit float you just select
that at the top here and you have no
settings because that is fixed and then
export 32bit float audio and you select
where you would like to have it and here
we have this little Cog wheel when we
click that when we get into the settings
of the transmitter note that I said
transmitter because you need to set the
settings on one transmitter at a time
the first thing we have that is gain
assist the gain assist can be set to
Auto dynamic or off I would recommend to
have this one set to probably Auto for
90% of the time and dynamic to the rest
personally I would probably not have it
set to off at all because it's just so
nice to know that the gain assist can
adjust those High record ings so it's
not clipping it's going to keep
everything in a good Audio Level so I
don't need to work so much with it in
post and to have an explanation what
this one means then you can just click
the I so for Auto for example that one
is recommended as Road says the auto
gain assist mode will give you smoother
more consistent sound which can be
better in a recording scenario like an
interview where the audio levels are
jumping around a lot and that is for
example we are talking like this and
that's
we are laughing and we have so much fun
and of course it can jump around a lot
and then in that setting the autogain
assist will do its best to normalize
those it's not clipping if you have the
dynamic instead it says that the dynamic
gain assist mode balances the audio
while maintaining Dynamics resulting in
a more natural sound this can be better
in a controlled recording environment
where the sound your recording is more
even and also to notice that the gain
assist does not apply to the onboard
recordings but that doesn't really
matter again because we have 32-bit
float so it doesn't really ever clip
next we have the road button that one
can be set to marker or mute I don't
want to have that one to do anything
because I don't want the person that is
wearing that to accidentally just press
that button and create a marker or even
worse just mute the audio that would be
a disaster so I leave that To None then
we have the dim setting the LED
brightness of the system unfortunately
we we can just have it to dim or bright
I would prefer if that could be set to
off or maybe a time limit to set off so
for example we could have it lit up and
then after 5 Seconds it could turn off
and if I would like to enable those LEDs
again I could just press one of the
buttons to see whatever status we have
because if you for example have that
transmitter visible somewhere you don't
want to have those LEDs shining into the
camera and here we have the record
settings I have set that to always you
can have it set to always or manual
always means basically that it's going
to start record as soon as you take it
out from the case the next one that's
the high pass filter and the high pass
filter is filtering out lower noises so
if I set that one to 75 everything below
75 Hertz will be cancelled out if I set
that 100 htz everything below 100 htz
will be canceled out and then you may
want mats how can I know which one I
should have and should I have any of
them so for me for example I usually
almost always only record audio from
people that is talking or they are
singing or they're doing something else
like that and a male voice usually
stretches between 85 Hertz up to 180 htz
and a female voice usually stretches
from 165 Hertz up to
255 Hertz so if I going to record male
people well then I could have that at 75
Herz and I know that nothing from the
person that is talking is going to be
clipped away if you're going to record
only female people well then I can
actually stretch that up to have 100 HZ
as the low cut filter because then I
know that all those rumbling noises that
can come from the environment or from
wind can be filtered out automatically
but for me I'm going to leave that one
to 75 Hertz and I actually have an app
that I recommend that I'm going to show
you the app is called
DB and it looks like this it's actually
an app that is free for the basic
features and the basic feat features is
what I need but when I use this one I
flip like this then I can see where the
audio is so if I take a tone like
uh I can see how it changes so from here
it's about 75 Hertz so we can see that
there is a lot of background noise that
is coming in those frequencies so here I
will also like to show you how accurate
this actually is here I'm going to take
a 75 htz tone so you can see how this is
indicated
and let's take a 100 Herz tone
instead and if we take a tone that goes
from 20 Herz up to 20,000 you can see
that
[Music]
here
[Music]
so this app is really good to figure out
if the room tone is Within These
frequencies that you actually can filter
out from the beginning so for me I'm
going to leave this to 75 Hertz like
that and then I can see that okay when
I'm talking I'm mostly talking Within
These frequencies so I know that I could
probably use the 100 HZ low cut filter
as well then we have the timeout feature
the timeout is that if the transmitter
and the receiver has not been connected
for 15 minutes then the transmitter
would turn off however if you have the
recording feature turn on of the
transmitter it will not automatically
turn off so this is only if the
recording is turned off and there is no
connection between the receiver and
transmitter then the transmitter will
automatically turn off after 15 minutes
I think it could be good if Road
actually emphasized that here so you
could see that it's actually 15 minutes
timer that is going to be activated and
here you have so you can remove all the
recordings so you basically format the
internal memory on the transmitter and
here we have Dropout markers so when
enabled Dropout zones and markers will
be shown on on board recordings so if
you lose the connection between the
receiver and a transmitter you're going
to be able to see that on recording and
that is good because then you know that
you maybe need to export at least that
section of the recording because you
won't have any internal recording in the
camera during that period of time and if
you like to see my range test off the
road W Pro I link to that video in the
description box below and actually Road
managed to increase the distance with
about 60% in a firmware update and I
have a video about that one as well and
then we also have the clock update and
Diagnostics the next thing we're going
to go through that is how I connect my
road Wireless Pro to the camera to get
the best audio so now let's connect the
road Wireless Pro to my Sony A7 S3 that
I have here so first of all we're going
to take out the receiver from the
charging case we're going to attach this
one here at the top of the hot shoe like
that so when we have it attached we can
actually flip it up like this if we
would like to see something from the
display we're going to take TRS cable
that we get in the kit and it's actually
tip ring sleeve if you have two black
lines is not the lines that you're
counting you're counting the metal
between the black lines if you have
three is tip ring ring sleeve but in
this case when you have two black lines
is a tip then we have a ring and then we
have a sleeve so let's connect that one
here in the camera and then I connect
the other end into the road Wireless Pro
so now we can see that it's turned on
before I turn on the camera so if now
turn on the
camera the camera is turned on and the
road Wireless pro receiver is turned on
if I turn off the
camera the road Wireless pro receiver is
still turned on however if I not turn
off the receiver manually now it's
turned off and if I now turn on the
camera the receiver will turn on and if
I now turn off the
camera then the road Wireless Pro will
turn off as well it's important to know
that you need to have the rad Wireless
pro receiver turned off if you would
like to have this Auto on off feature
enabled after that we need to
connect one of the transmitters so let's
connect the lavalier microphone let's
screw that on here first tight so it
doesn't come loose push it in twist all
of it now it's connected I'm going to
place this lavalier microphone on my
talent I would like to have about this
distance away from my mouth so I can put
it here and then after that and now we
can see that the recording that one is
turned on because I have this red LED
this one the connectivity LED is
flashing that means that it's not
connected to the receiver so but we have
the internal
recording I can turn on my camera the
road Wireless pro receiver is turning on
and now we can see that we have the
audio here we can also double check what
setting we have if we press the bottom
left we can see that we have the Zone A7
S3 if I now check the audio levels I can
see I would like to have this so it's
not going up to Red it can go almost up
to red but not up to red and now we can
see that if I set this one to number one
I can see that the audio is hardly going
over 20 and that is way too low that
means that I just need to boost it a lot
in post and I would like to have this it
Peaks above - 12 somewhere here so it
goes to - 6 -3 when it Peaks and I would
like to have the average around -2 the
auto gain assist feature is so good so
even if I talk a lot louder now it's
still not going up to Red it's still
really good and if I talk really quiet I
still can have the audio and then I talk
even louder and it's still not going up
to Red just because of the auto gain
assist which is fantastic but if it
would go up to Red no not even if I'm
screaming like that it goes up to Red
the auto gain assist feature is so good
so even if I talk a lot louder now it's
still not going up to Red it's still
really good and if I talk really quiet I
still can have the audio and then I talk
even louder and it's still not going up
to Red just because of the auto gain
assist which is fantastic but if it
would go up to Red no not even if I'm
screaming like that it goes up to red
but if it was to go up over red so it's
distorted then I can always take that
audio in post because I have the 32-bit
float in the internal recording so I can
download that and then I can just adjust
the levels in my editing software so
around 8 till 9 this is usually where I
have it so I have a good audio when I
bring it into my editing software
without the need of changing and
adjusting the audio levels too much in
post with that said thank you so much
for spending these 45 minutes together
with me here on my channel and I really
hope that you feel that you have
confidence in using the road Wireless
Pro in all situations out there the next
thing we're going to do I hope so that
is to see each other in one of these two
videos because the top one that is the
video that YouTube recommended to watch
next and de B one well that is my latest
uploaded video have a good one bye
