ASK THE EXPERT: Can you use a smaller disc with your angle grinder?

hello I'm Paul from ask the expert so

today we have a question can you use a

smaller disc on your angle grinder okay

this should be easy to show so here we

have a one two five millimeter grinder

and obviously this tool is designed to

be used with a one two five millimeter

disc but can we use a smaller disc which

is a 115 on this tool absolutely no

problem at all the bore size is the same

22.23 so it fits on there perfectly

we're not going to be exceeding the

maximum peripheral speed of this disc

either and also the disc is smaller so

we don't have to remove the guard which

you must never do on these machines so

yes you can use a smaller disc on your

angle grinder than it's actually rated

for no problem at all the problem arises

when we try to go the other way and we

try to put a larger disc on on a grinder

than the size it's actually designed for

so say for example this one one five

millimeter machine of course designed

for a 115 millimeter disc it fits

perfectly uh can we put a bigger disc on

such as a one two five millimeter disc

again the bore size is the same no

problem at all but the problem arises

with the fit of the disc the guard gets

in the way so the only way you could put

this bigger disc on the smaller grinder

is to remove the guard which again you

must never do and we've even seen in the

market where people use really big disks

on On Tools switches like this such as a

180 millimeter disc and again the bore

size is the same 22.23 we'd have to

remove the guard obviously because it's

far too big for the machine which again

you must never do but most importantly

you'd be far exceeding the maximum

peripheral speed of this disc on this

machine so you must never do that oh
