welcome to harded engineer.com I am vun
pel in this video I will explain to you
about flange isolation joint and the
gasket kit that used to achieve this
objective I will explain to you about
what is flange isolation joint why and
where it is use components of the
isolation joint and proper installation
of flange isolation joint
so watch the video to get the complete
understanding of this topic and don't

let's start with video I'm thankful to
GPT Industries for allowing me to use
their propriety material in this video
so the first topic is what is the flange
isolation joint well don't get confused
by the name it is not a blinding of the
flange that stop the
fluid this is different kind of
isolation it is going to isolate the
current yes the current in the PIP
Flinch you H it right a Flinch isolation
gasket kit is used to protect pipeline
flanges from the corrosion that happens
due to galvanic
corrosion I will explain to you about
how this corrosion work in the pipeline
in more detail in the upcoming
slides here you can see in the photo
that a specially designed gasket kit
that involves gasket non-metallic sleeve
of STS and non-metallic washer so now
where we can see this isolation gasket
kit so the first place where you can see
this gasket kit is when this similar
metal joints are involved for example
you can see that here in the photo one
one side flange is of carbon steel and
other side is of Stillness steel you can
see that carbon steel flange is badly
cored in both this photo as no isolation
gaskets were used so why this happened
that I will explain to you in next slide
here the second place where you can see
the flange isolation gasket kit it is
when the pipeline change from above
ground to underground or other way
around usually what happens the
underground pipelines are protected by
cathodic protection so the external
power supply is provided to the pipeline
and when the pipeline become above
ground you have to cut off the power
otherwise what will happen you will lost
electricity and also it will damage the
paint of the above ground piping so when
you use this isolation gasket joint you
can prevent the current leakage from
above ground pipeline From The
Underground pipeline so this gasket kit
use in that places as
well so now we know why and where the
flanges isolation gasket kits are used
so let's learn how to protect pip
flanges by using this kit as I explained
to you earlier the main reason behind
the corroded flange is galvanic
corrosion so here you can see that
Stillness steel and carbon steel flanges
are joined without an isolation casket
this happens why this corion happens is
because this material are having a
different value of galvanic voltage
here the chart shows the various
commonly used material and the galvanic
value corresponding to that
material material at the top here you
can see that gra fight gold silver this
materials are more noble as compared to
magnesium Jin that is at the bottom of
the chart what is the meaning of this
let's say that more noble noble material
means those who are at the top of the
chart they call more noble material as
compared to the material that are bottom
of the chart so what is happen Happening
Here is that the material at the top
will not get corroded easily so even if
they are in use in the corio environment
they will remain in a good condition
whereas the material which is the bottom
of the chart if you put in normal atmic
environment then also it will get cored
so here you can see that stainless steel
is above the carbon steel what do that
mean that if you connect the carbon
steel and stainless steel in that case
St steel will work as a cathode and and
carbon steel work as a anode so the
anode will get corroded and cathode will
get protected so that is what happening
in our dissimilar flange
connection so as you know now that what
is galvanic corrosion and why it is
happening so to start corrosion you need
four things that to be present at the
same time so what are these four things
are first is anode cathode metallic path
and electrolyte here in the flange you
can see all of them in the photo I have
highlighted so in idal condition we have
a three things present at all the time
in any fled connection first is anode
that is L Noble material here in case
carbon steel cathode that is St steel
which is work as a more noble material
and the metallic path that is happening
in three places first through St then
through St and nut and the flange to
flange that is through gasket so if the
flange connection is free from
electrolyte you don't need any
protection I mean electrolytes are
always present electrolyte what will
happen they will provide the path to the
electron to pass from one material to
other material it will jump that way so
in the real life you have a rain water
moisture Sands and many more things that
work as a electrolyte so the protection
of the flange is required by how so you
have to eliminate one of these component
like fire triangle if you remove any one
component fire fire will stop similarly
here out of this four component if you
remove any one of them it will stop the
corrosion let's see what we can remove
here you can see that we cannot remove
anode cathode and electrolyte presence
because it is always going to be there
either rain moisture or something is
going to be there in the atmosphere so
you only thing that left to remove is
metallic path and the flange isolation
gasket kit does the same it stop the
flow of electron from cathode to anode
this way you can protect your flange now
how it will done let's see by each
component the isolation gasket kits
include a specially designed
non-conductive gasket that provides the
necessary sealing as well as the
isolation usually if you use the
metallic gasket what will happen the
current flow will be continue means your
path is from one FL to Second flange
will remain as it is but this gasket
will stop that so we have prevent first
connection first path to prevent the
isolation now the second thing is the St
sleeve you know that in flange
connection we use metallic studs so this
metallic stud is also work as a path so
if you cover that stud with non-metallic
material it will prevent direct contact
between flanch and St so that way you
eliminate the second path here in the
image you can see that now the third
component that is non-metallic washer
why we use non-metallic washer so if you
know the third part that is through nut
and flange connection now nut is going
to be fixed on a stur okay so St will
pass current to the nut and nut will
connect it is it will come in contact
with the flange phase so there is a path
so we want to cut this path as well so
if you put non-metallic washer in
between the nut and flange it will
prevent the third path as well and to
prevent the damage of this non-metallic
stud we use metallic washer as a backup
so this way we can eliminate all three
path that will initiate the
corrosion this is how we are going to
achieve isolation of the two dissimilar
flanges similarly in above ground and
underground Cas here I have explained to
you with respect to dissimilar material
but if you consider the same thing with
underground above ground pipe with
cathodic prote same way you can
eliminate the direct flow of electricity
from one side of the flange to other
side of flange and that way we can
protect our above ground underground
piping
flanes to achieve the full benefits of
this isolation kits there are some good
practice that you have to follow here I
have so two of them the first is a gap
between the two flanges this should be
avoided in all cases now see that there
are two type of Gap will happen when we
create the flange joint one is the top
of the gasket here you can see that I
have highlighted the gasket so whenever
we use gasket there will be Gap at the
top of the face of the flanges so this
Gap will work as a trap for the Ice
Water anything that electrolyte so
whenever there is electrolyte it will
become it will create another path to
flow the current so the our purpose of
the isolation will not work so we have
to make sure that whenever we use gasket
kit the top face of the flange and our
gasket should be in the line similarly
the gasket inside the pipe what is
happening the idea of the gasket and
idea of the pipe is not same what is
going to happen if ID of the gasket is
lce then there will be a chances of
vortex at the inside the gap between the
flange and whenever there is a vortex
there is a chance of corrosion this will
really help you to protect your
dissimilar flanges as well as above
ground underground pipe connection from
the damage hope you like this video
