Ninh explains: The Rules of Cornhole.

0:02

The object of the game is to score more points than your opponent.

0:07

Cornhole, sometimes referred to as ‘American Cornhole’, is a popular pastime at tailgates

0:12

and social gatherings that has now become a televised professional sport in the US.

0:19

Cornhole is played either as singles with one player playing against another player.

0:24

Or as doubles, where two people play against two people.

0:28

In doubles, teammates stand at opposite boards.

0:33

Each player or team has four bags, filled with corn or something similar, and they will

0:38

differ in colour to that of their opponents.

0:42

They will aim to throw their bag into the cornhole, which is situated on a board that

0:46

is 27ft away.

0:48

These boards are a maximum of 24” x 48”, with the holes six inches from the top of

0:55

the board.

0:56

To start the game, a coin toss or rock paper scissors determines who goes first.

1:02

Players are permitted to stand on either side of the board in a 4’x3’ area called the

1:08

pitchers box.

1:10

They cannot cross the front of it and doing so will render your thr6ow invalid and any

1:14

points you score removed.

1:17

The idea is to try and throw the bag into the hole.

1:21

Once you have attempted this, it is your opponents turn to do the same.

1:26

If you manage to land a bag onto the board, this is known as ‘in the count’ or a ‘woody’

1:31

and this scores 1 point.

1:34

If you manage to throw the bag into the hole, either directly or by deflecting it in, this

1:40

is known as ‘in the hole’ or ‘cornhole’ and this scores 3 points.

1:47

If you miss the board completely, if a bag ever touches the ground, or if one of the

1:53

bags falls off or is deflected off the board, this scores nothing.

1:59

Once all players have thrown their four bags, this is known as an inning or a frame.

2:05

The scores are counted up for each player and subtracted from each other.

2:10

The player who has scored more, gets to add the score difference to his total points score.

2:16

If both players score the exact same, the inning is declared as a draw.

2:22

A new inning will then start from the opposite board, with the player or team scoring the

2:27

most in the previous round throwing first.

2:30

A game is played until someone reaches 21 points.

2:36

The first person or team to reach 21 total points is the winner.

2:41

In most games, the winning margin is 21 points or over.

2:46

But in some tournaments you have to score exactly 21 points.

2:51

Going over will result in your total score being reset to 15 points.

2:57

That’s basically cornhole in a nutshell, but there’s a few other things you’ll

3:01

need to understand before playing or watching a game.

3:04

For example: GENERAL RULES

3:06

There’s a few general rules that you have to abide by when playing Cornhole.

3:12

These are strictly enforced when playing in tournaments, but not so much when playing

3:16

casually.

3:17

Some of these rules include.

3:20

- You may only use the same hand to throw every bag in a single inning.

3:24

- You have a maximum of 20 seconds to throw any one bag.

3:29

- You may not cross the front of the board during a throw.

3:33

- And you must throw the bag in an underarm manner.

3:38

BAGS

3:39

The bags themselves are filled with corn or similar material.

3:43

They are approximately 6 inches x 6 inches and have a maximum weight of 16oz.

3:49

One of the things you don’t see is that one side of the bag is rougher than the other.

3:54

This is intentional, as this affects the types of shots that can be made with these bags.

4:01

TYPES OF SHOTS Players employ a variety of shots and techniques

4:05

in order to win the game.

4:08

These include – A slide shot – where the bag hits the board

4:12

and slides into the hole.

4:14

A blocker – where a bag is intentionally thrown to stop short of the hole to block

4:19

an opponent slide.

4:21

A bouncer – where a bag is bounced in and over an opponent blocker.

4:27

and the Mailshot – where the bag is intentionally tossed directly into the hole.

4:33

This is the hardest shot to make in Cornhole.

4:36
