0:00

this is the iPhone 13. is it worth

0:03

upgrading to the iPhone

0:06

14 especially that fancy purple one well

0:10

folks my name is me Kevin and in this

0:12

video we're going to talk about my

0:14

thoughts between the iPhone 14 and the

0:17

iPhone 13. first I'm going to tell you a

0:20

little bit about the hopes that I had

0:22

for the always-on display I'm going to

0:24

give you a different solution for that

0:26

always on display that doesn't actually

0:28

cost you anything if you've already got

0:30

some of the old devices from Apple and

0:33

I'm going to do a comparison of the

0:35

video quality and audio quality of these

0:38

two devices as well as giving you a

0:40

little bit of a secret into how you can

0:42

solve your audio problems with the

0:44

iPhone and ultimately we'll wrap this up

0:47

into a verdict about whether or not I

0:49

actually think the iPhone 14 pro Max is

0:52

worth it now do keep in mind I use both

0:55

phones one of them I use for business

0:57

one of them I use mostly for personal

0:59

reasons however I have both of them with

1:03

me almost always and I feel the

1:07

differences between the two in that I

1:10

really feel almost no differences

1:12

the biggest difference that I noticed

1:15

between the two devices should be

1:17

obvious it is that one has a display

1:21

that turns off after you stop using it

1:24

the other one just dims dark as this one

1:27

just did and it's essentially the

1:29

always-on display where to preserve

1:32

battery life the refresh rate of this

1:34

monitor declines to about 1 Hertz which

1:37

is kind of like one refresh per second

1:39

and you don't really get a lot of change

1:42

here whereas here you have to pick up

1:44

the phone to wake it to see what time it

1:47

is now I think that's pretty neat I also

1:49

like that you could throw a couple

1:50

little widgets in over here take a look

1:52

for example here at mine I have a little

1:55

widget for the Apollo app for Reddit and

1:58

I have a couple little ticker symbols

2:00

there that I like to track including

2:01

Enphase and Tesla but I have to say I

2:04

wish I had a lot more space for widgets

2:07

on that home page we've got plenty of

2:09

room for widgets like a very large

2:12

calendar or news segments within the

2:15

actual phone once we unlock the phone

2:16

but the widgets page I have to say a

2:19

little bit disappointing on the lock

2:21

screen you don't get a lot of room for

2:24

notifications and even when you disable

2:26

notifications grouping iPhone still

2:30

groups notifications as soon as it

2:33

defaults to the always-on display look

2:36

at how it collapses your notifications

2:38

this is unfortunate because I was really

2:41

hoping that when I put notifications on

2:43

list mode in the settings I would

2:45

actually have a list of notifications

2:47

that would stay open on that always on

2:50

display that's actually not what you get

2:52

when you have the always on display

2:54

instead what I've done in my home office

2:56

is I've taken an iPad that I no longer

2:59

use on a daily basis I mounted it onto

3:02

this little arm that clamps under the

3:04

bottom of my desk and hangs over and I

3:06

just sort of holds my iPad floating so

3:08

it's not taking up desk space and here's

3:10

what I did I turned on notifications for

3:13

Seeking Alpha and Twitter and some other

3:15

apps and I just turn off auto lock for

3:19

the iPad and I pull down from the

3:21

notification center at the top and I get

3:23

a list of all of my notifications that

3:26

just stay there and it becomes really

3:28

easy for me to scroll up and down that's

3:30

kind of the hope that I had for the

3:32

always-on display on the iPhone except

3:34

it always seems to collapse once the

3:36

device actually locks into these little

3:39

collapsed groups even though I have

3:41

groupings off that then makes me have to

3:44

essentially unlock the phone to see the

3:47

full list and then I'm like well crap

3:49

then I may as well be using the old

3:51

iPhone 13. so in terms of the always-on

3:55

display had a lot of enthusiasm for what

3:57

we'd be able to do with it and since

3:59

that's just software maybe we'll be able

4:01

to get some better features for that in

4:02

the future but is that always on display

4:05

really worth it in my opinion not worth

4:08

upgrading but what about the camera and

4:11

audio quality well as usual I think it's

4:13

best to let your eyes decide here's a

4:15

recording at 4K 60 on both of the phones

4:18

on the left side we have the iPhone 13.

4:21

on the right side we have the iPhone 14.

4:24

both of these are being held out

4:27

extended while I'm riding a Segway so

4:29

it's a little bit smoother than if I

4:31

were walking and both of them are on a

4:35

DJI stabilizer also helping smooth out

4:38

the shot so you've got sort of a double

4:40

stabilizer action going on here but what

4:42

I really want you to compare is is that

4:44

wide angle camera really that much

4:46

different in these various different

4:47

lighting settings that we're getting

4:49

from shade to light to Interior to

4:53

exterior in a weird way and it almost

4:55

feels Blasphemous to say it but there

4:57

are some angles where I like the raw

4:59

iPhone 13 better and there's some angles

5:01

where I like the 14 better and I'm like

5:03

ah would I pay fifteen hundred dollars

5:05

for you know know a toss-up probably not

5:08

and so I promise I was shocked when I

5:11

also compared the audio of these two

5:13

devices this morning I recorded on the

5:16

iPhone 14 and the iPhone 13 on the

5:20

Segway to purposefully see if I can get

5:22

some wind introduced to see how they

5:25

would both handle it so basically I'm

5:27

holding my hand on the opposite end of

5:30

where that forward-facing camera is and

5:32

blocking some of that oncoming wind

5:35

noise from going into the little mic

5:37

input section and I have to say it was

5:40

really hard to tell a difference and in

5:42

some cases again the iPhone 13 felt like

5:44

it did better now by no means was my

5:47

test by far the most perfect but I'm

5:50

just saying if on average Everyday Use

5:52

it's hard to discern the difference is

5:55

there really much worth paying an

5:57

upgrade for if you're trying to get

5:58

always on display better camera or

6:00

better audio if those are debatable

6:03

benefits and most of the other benefits

6:05

you get through the software upgrade to

6:08

iOS 16. in which case I'd much rather be

6:10

an advocate for you checking out this

6:13

okay folks this is it it's a pretty

6:17

inexpensive sure wired microphone which

6:21

just plugs directly into this XLR end

6:23

and look at that right into lightning

6:26

let me show you how the audio sounds on

6:28

that also on the Segway now there are

6:30

Wireless options for mics like these but

6:33

personally I'm not the biggest fan of

6:35

Wireless I think you get too much

6:36

interference you get too much

6:38

frustration dealing with batteries and

6:40

when you need the darn things they're

6:41

just not as quick as having a little bit

6:43

of a wired connection which is what I

6:45

have here it does mean I have a dangling

6:46

cord though between my hand and the

6:48

other end of the iPhone but that's okay

6:50

because I get that quality I believe

6:53

that this drive around on the Segway is

6:56

almost perfect audio not only that but

7:00

by having this little muff on top which

7:02

I think you get like a seven or eight

7:05

pack of these for like 10 bucks they're

7:06

super inexpensive I'll link all these

7:08

products down below the mic the muffs

7:10

and the cable this gives you some of the

7:13

most pure audio you could ever ask for

7:16

from an iPhone so now all of a sudden

7:18

I'm getting 4K 60 Resolution on the

7:22

iPhone 14 and that excellent quality

7:25

audio now you can look at the first part

7:28

of the video where we compare the video

7:30

side by side in some of those different

7:31

lighting arrangements and I think you

7:34

can determine whether it really makes

7:35

sense to jump up to that iPhone 14 on

7:38

that forward-facing camera camera one of

7:40

the reasons I personally really love one

7:42

using these particular mics is they're

7:45

really good at canceling out noise

7:47

that's far around you so sometimes when

7:49

I'm filming outside my biggest

7:51

frustrations are airplanes helicopters

7:54

loud motorcycles police sirens or

7:57

sometimes if you're at an airport just

7:59

like getting on the plane and the plane

8:01

being noisier quite frankly sometimes I

8:03

filmed on the plane and it's extremely

8:07

noisy you just constantly hear the

8:08

whirring of the plane this kills a lot

8:11

of that so this is probably one of the

8:13

best tools to have in your Arsenal if

8:15

you are somebody who is trying to film

8:17

with an iPhone so does that mean you

8:21

really need to upgrade to the 14 again

8:23

TBD on what you think regarding that

8:25

video quality having both of them I

8:28

personally don't think it's very

8:29

necessary now what about other features

8:31

I mean we've got that pretty awesome

8:34

wider screen now because you've got that

8:36

smaller cut out up top for the cam

8:39

camera and you get a little bit more of

8:41

a graphic kind of uh interactive feel

8:44

when you unlock your phone or when you

8:46

play music or when you watch a YouTube

8:48

video or when you silence your phone you

8:51

get slightly different indicators but is

8:53

that really worth upgrading personally

8:55

on a daily basis I use the iPhone 13 and

8:59

the 14. that's because I use one mostly

9:01

for personal things and one mostly for

9:03

business things and really I use the

9:05

phones almost interchangeably with the

9:08

exception of when I need to grab the

9:10

camera when I use a portrait mode

9:12

forward facing to do thumbnails for for

9:15

uh YouTube thumbnails or whatever I'm

9:18

exclusively using the latest phone

9:20

because why not if I have both of them

9:22

but otherwise have I noticed a personal

9:24

difference in either of the phones and

9:26

functionality when I'm switching between

9:28

the two do I really notice any kind of

9:30

speed differences do I really notice any

9:32

functionality differences between the

9:34

male apps or the other apps I use or

9:36

messaging or it's connection to to the

9:40

watch or it's 5G speeds quite frankly no

9:44

I I don't actually as a user notice the

9:47

differences are they there probably

9:49

because we know there are differences in

9:51

the tech specs now to help you with that

9:52

determination something that I did do is

9:55

I just switched from the iPhone 14 to

9:57

the 13 within my last little segue right

10:00

here on this and that's all just to try

10:03

to help you determine is that camera

10:05

quality really a noticeable difference

10:07

let me know in the comments what you

10:09

think and we'll see in the next one

10:11

thanks bye
