Paint with me - Easy and to the point - OIL PAINTING TUTORIAL | AlaiGanuza
FULL TRANSCRIPT
Hello painters!! My name is Alai and welcome to my first video
I hope you are motivated to paint because this is a "paint with me" type video
I have painted tons of egg paintings in the past
but, I have been told to bring more so here I am, using it as an excuse to make my first YouTube video
I will leave time stamps down below so, with nothing more to say
Let's go ᕙ(`▽´)ᕗ
Here you have the picture I chose. You can use it if you feel like it
This will be oil on wood. I like the natural scale for painting so I am picking this one
I am attaching the panel to a larger board with bluetack or some tape
If the panel is large or wide enough, this step is not needed
This is the regular palette I use
For the brushes, I like using flats like these ones for example
I will also need a palette knife and some medium
I like to use acrylics in the sketch because it won't blend with the painting
Sometimes I use a brush and other, these markers. Everything will be linked down below
Go as simple or complex as you need, as you can see it on the screen
The better you make this step, the easier it's going to be while painting
First, I like to mix some colors. This is just a guess because probably I won't use them all
You know whites are never pure white. As you can see, I am mixing pale pinks, teals, blues, ...
Some people start on the background and some others on the dark tones
I don't have any rules so, let's start from the whites
Yep, this is my usual painting speed :D
Although I'm starting with the egg white, I also go from dark to lights (kind of)
Those little spots of the color are going to add interest to the painting
We are looking for the sum of the colors
The total of the colors should give us the reference color
It's all about contrast: if this is my darker green, I don't have to take the exact tone over here
I just need to make it fit nice, contrasting the other one I've already used
You are not going to see the original photo, you are going to see just the painting
Now we need a color with the same value we have here for the whites, but again
it doesn't need to be the same hue. You can play with the color you want, for example, this pinkish tone
This one has the exact value as the yellow green we are using
Let me fast forward some parts but I want to make emphasis in this area around the yolk
This is going to be contaminated by the deep orange
I want you to focus in the edge of the whites. Here, you can see a crisp edge
but not only here, you can see it all around the egg except in this area
This is what happens if you add the most saturated paint from the tube in your painting
I don't like it that much I prefer a color in the middle of the saturation scale
I am going to remove it and put a new color into it
I am working on my brush work I don't want to detail too much
Sometimes the simpler is better. Again: contrast, shapes, ...
With a smaller brush I am going to add a few details and highlights
Try not to ruin those yummy brush strokes
And now let's add the highlights
I like to use complementary colors to pop out more the lights, like in the picture
If I have a cool base, some warm tones behind the final highlight will make the difference and vice versa
Like in this case. Here I am adding a light teal below the final light
Try not to blend it. If you do that, you'll end up having grays and muddy colors
And now the final light smaller and not fully covering the blue
Let me show you. It really stands out (✿◠‿◠)
I really like this method and I use it every time
Now, if you want even more, the shiniest light can even have a pinch of white, but just one
To make bubbles, add shadows inside the contour
Now let's pick a larger brush for the background. You can use it to correct the edge
Maybe here darker near the egg...
Here's where I appreciate my efforts on the sketch
What I like to do when I paint the background is try to reuse my old mixes
If you use the palette knife, you won't have moody paint and you can use a bit of medium if you want the paint to be thinner
Focus on your picture Saturate your greys Don't be boring
Now let's ignore my dog behind and let's add some details on the background too
I don't usually use thin brushes but lately I am enjoying this one a lot
Now one of the most difficult parts is to know when to stop
Well, I always ruin it before I realize so, just try not to overwork the painting
And the painting is done (๑•̀ㅂ•́)ง✧
So, that's it!! This is the final result. What do you think?
I love to make these because you can finish them fast and do them "a la prima"
And you can use these mini paintings to experiment new things, new colors,... and see the results immediately
If you made this painting tag me on Instagram so I can see it
Let me know in the comments which color did you use to paint the egg whites
I hope to see you in my next video. It's going to be about ArtRage, my preferred digital app for painting
Bye!! :)
