Adam! Where'd

0:55

1:25

1:28

Adam!

1:45

Didn't I tell you to stay in the car?

1:46

يلا let's go، قوم!

1:51

يلا let's go، قوم!

1:57

يلا قوم let's go! Hey!

2:03

Take it easy! What are you doing, man?

2:05

None of your business, old man! I'm talking to you!

2:08

Listen, he's my nephew, he's just a little... stubborn,

2:13

that's all. Answer me, boy. Do you know this man?

2:19

What are you saying?

2:21

And where are you from anyway? I'm... we're

2:24

from Jerusalem. I'm his uncle, maybe he just didn't

2:28

understand the language or something. Jerusalem, huh?

2:32

One more time. Do you know this man? Yes!

2:36

I actually did

2:37

understand the language.

2:39

He doesn't like you much, does he?

2:43

Well, neither do I.

3:23

The Most Merciful.

3:29

He taught the Qur'an, He created man. You see, before

3:33

He even made you, He gave you a very specific

3:35

way to know Him. Think about how much first impressions matter.

3:40

What are the first few words at the top

3:42

of your profile? Because those few words tell the whole

3:44

world what you want to be known as and known for.

3:48

And 113 surahs in the Qur'an begin with this

3:51

header from Allah Himself

3:54

And even before the Qur'an was revealed to us

3:58

Suleiman عليه السلام introduces Allah this way to a

4:03

pagan queen and nation

Verily,

4:09

it is from Suleiman, and it begins in the name

4:12

of Allah, the Entirely Merciful, the Especially Merciful.

4:16

Out of all of His names, He chose Ar-Rahman

4:20

and Ar-Rahim because mercy is the first door to get

4:21

to know Him. And before even Suleiman wrote it in

4:24

his letter, it was written by Allah above the throne

4:30

Verily, My mercy

4:34

prevails over My wrath. And you'll notice that the only

4:39

name that Allah pairs with His throne is الرَّحْمَٰنِ

4:42

It's as if to say

4:45

that His mercy is the governing principle of everything

4:49

beneath His throne, which serves as the roof of all

4:51

of creation. So what does that functionally mean? Ibn

4:55

al-Qayyim رحمه الله said it means He made forgiveness

4:57

more beloved to Him than vengeance.

5:00

إِلَيْهِ مِنَ الْعُقُوبَةِ and mercy, more beloved to

5:03

Him than punishment; and grace, more beloved to Him than

5:07

justice; and giving, more beloved to Him than

5:10

withholding. So He framed His entire creation with His

5:13

mercy. And then not only that, His mercy frames all

5:16

of His other names and attributes.

5:19

Ar-Rahman can be added to every other name because He's merciful with His

5:23

knowledge. He's merciful with His sight. He's merciful

5:26

with His power. So He introduces Himself as Ar-Rahman

5:29

5:34

Because even when His might shows, He never stops being the Most Merciful.

5:39

And after He wrote mercy on Himself and then into the scheme

5:42

of the cosmos, He then programmed it into our

5:45

very creation. When the soul of Adam عليه السلام entered

5:49

his body for the very first time, he sneezed. And

5:52

the very first words he heard from his Lord, يَرْحَمُكَ

5:57

"May Allah have mercy on you." So mercy was

6:01

humanity's welcome into existence. And then before He

6:04

sent us to Earth, Allah سبحانه وتعالى created these

6:06

sacred bonds of families from the throne. And He hung

6:10

them and He said, "I am the Most Merciful, and I

6:13

created the sacred ties of the womb."

6:17

Then He placed you in that womb, which He calls

6:20

because it's derived from His رحمة. It's a sanctuary of

6:23

mercy where every single one of your needs is being

6:26

met without you having to do anything for yourself.

6:30

Your mother gives you everything she's got to sustain you

6:32

with nothing in return from you. It's the selfless,

6:35

one-sided love that's the closest thing that reflects

6:38

Allah's mercy on His creation.

6:41

And then you come out of the womb into this world, and Allah immediately and

6:45

perpetually surrounds you with a mercy that encompasses

6:49

everything. And the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم said,

6:52

"Verily, Allah created 100 portions of mercy,

6:56

And he sent down to this Earth just one of those portions."

6:59

Through that 1% of mercy, the entire world is sustained.

7:04

And it includes the entirety of mercy that creation is

7:07

capable of showing to each other, whether it's human

7:09

beings, jinn, or even animals. I want you to imagine

7:14

the ocean's depth, 35,000 feet down, which by the way

7:19

is the same altitude that your plane flies at.

7:21

And in the darkness of that ocean, there's a fish

7:25

that's cleaning the parasites off of another fish while

7:27

Allah is adjusting the temperature of the water itself.

7:31

And then in the height of the open sky, a bird

7:33

is signaling danger to another bird while all along

7:36

No one is holding

7:40

them up except for the Most Merciful. Then think about

7:43

your own life and every interaction of mercy that

7:46

ever known, whether it was your mother's embrace or

7:49

maybe a friend's forgiveness or even the random act of

7:52

kindness from a stranger. All of that is from one

7:55

drop of Allah's mercy. But then someone says, "Well, why

7:59

is there still so much cruelty on Earth?" And it's

8:02

for the same reason that hunger exists in a world

8:04

that's overflowing with food, not because we have a

8:06

shortage, but because we fail to share. We're not short

8:11

of Allah's mercy. We're short of the mirrors to reflect

8:14

that mercy. Allah sent 1% of mercy to this Earth,

8:18

and we're supposed to be the trustees of that mercy.

8:21

And where the trustees fail, Allah سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَى stores

8:26

the debt for the day where He saved the remaining

8:28

99 portions of His mercy to be dispersed. And still,

8:32

look around, even in the midst of the worst human

8:36

cruelty that we see, His mercy keeps manifesting. What

8:40

more powerful imagery than the famous story of a mother

8:43

who runs between swords to pick up her child after

8:46

battle? Then she holds that baby tight and she starts

8:49

to nurse him. And the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم

8:52

captured the moment and he says to the companions,

8:55

See that mom with her baby? Allah is more merciful to you

8:58

than she is to that child." You know why

9:00

Because the one who created the mother's mercy is

9:03

certainly more merciful than her. Her love is just a

9:07

tiny drop of His mercy. And that's why Hammad ibn

9:10

Salama said to Sufyan al-Thawri, "Wallahi, if I had to

9:13

choose between my parents or Allah judging me on the Day

9:17

of Judgment, I would choose Allah because He is

9:20

even more merciful to me than my parents." Then someone

9:24

says, "Wait a minute, then how come that merciful Lord

9:28

does throw people into Hell?" Because Allah is not

9:32

limited in His mercy or by His mercy. Even that mother

9:37

on the Day of Judgment would flee from her

9:39

child at some point out of fear for herself. And His

9:42

mercy doesn't cancel His justice. Think about

9:47

it. Wouldn't it be cruel to the victims in

9:49

Gaza and Sudan and elsewhere if the oppressor and the

9:52

oppressed were treated the exact same way? So no, Allah

9:52

is not going to treat them the same, not because His

9:58

mercy is limited, but because it's perfect. So when

10:02

someone says, "How can a merciful God throw people into

10:04

hell?" respond and say, "Why would people choose hell

10:07

over a merciful God?" As Umar ibn Abd al-Aziz

10:10

10:17

Verily, only a loser misses out on the mercy of Allah

10:20

that encompasses all things. Like, how bad do you have

10:24

to be to be punished by Ar-Rahman? And that's why

10:28

Ibrahim عليه السلام said to his father, يَا أَبَتِي

10:31

10:34

I'm afraid you're going to be punished by Ar-Rahman.

10:37

He didn't say Al-Jabbar. He used the name Ar-Rahman to

10:41

say to get to a point where you're punished even

10:45

by Ar-Rahman is a scary spiritual place. And you know

10:49

who's in that place?

10:51

Verily, the Shaytan was

10:54

disobedient to Ar-Rahman, a Lord so merciful to him.

10:57

And SubhanAllah, Al-Harith ibn Suwayd, he says that at

11:00

some point on the Day of Judgment, even that Shaytan

11:03

himself will prop his neck up and look up, hoping

11:07

that the mercy of Allah will reach him despite all

11:10

the evil that he's done. But he's disqualified himself.

11:13

So if that's how much mercy Allah has to where

11:15

even the worst disbeliever would still think he has a

11:18

chance, then how do you think Allah will treat His

11:20

believers on the Day of Judgment? And that's when you

11:25

get to encounter another layer of mercy, but this time

11:28

from الرَّحِيمِ, where the 99% of His mercy is

11:32

reserved for you. You see, الرَّحْمَٰنِ is the entirely

11:35

merciful. الرَّحِيمِ is the especially merciful.

11:39

الرَّحْمَٰنِ pours His mercy all over creation in this

11:43

dunya. Then الرَّحِيمِ personalizes that mercy for the

11:47

believers in the hereafter. While الرَّحْمَٰنِ is for

11:50

the deserving and the undeserving, الرَّحِيمِ is

11:53

exclusively for the righteous.

11:56

And He is Rahim to the believers.

12:00

is mentioned in the Qur'an 57 times.

12:03

114 times, exactly twice that, as if to say

12:08

is for all creation. الرَّحِيمِ doubles the mercy for

12:11

those who believe. And He does so when they want

12:15

and need it most in the hereafter, where they can

12:17

enjoy it forever. But someone might say, "Is there a

12:22

special exclusive mercy for the believer in this life as

12:24

well?" And the answer is yes. And that is the meaning

12:27

of His name, الرَّؤُوفِ, the tenderly merciful.

12:31

The scholars say that رَأْفَة is the highest form of

12:33

mercy in the Arabic language. And الرَّؤُوفِ has a

12:36

special care for the believers even while they're still

12:39

here. The scholors say رحمه الله تعالى explained that رَأْفَة

12:42

is when Allah protects you before you even know you

12:45

needed protection. Like a parent who places a coat on

12:48

a child before the cold sets in. It's Allah averting

12:52

something from hitting you or maybe making you miss a

12:55

turn so that you don't turn into something that would

12:58

have hurt you. It's the small things that are happening

13:01

inside your body or maybe in the environment around you

13:04

to make things pleasant for you with processes you have

13:07

no idea are even happening. It's the highest intensity

13:11

of mercy, but it operates silently in the background out

13:14

of Allah's love for the believer. الرؤوف has a

13:18

different layer of mercy in the hereafter for you.

13:20

الرؤوف has a deeper layer of mercy for you even

13:24

while you're still here. He is رؤوف with His decree

13:27

in this life and رحيم with His reward in the next.

13:33

There's the mercy that guards before and the mercy

13:35

that heals after. And that's why almost every time the

13:38

name الرؤوف is mentioned in the Qur'an, it's paired

13:41

with الرحيم. Now, how much you're going to receive

13:44

of any of these names depends on how much you're

13:48

going to reflect of those names.

13:50

The merciful will be shown

13:53

mercy by الرحمن. And if you want more mercy, then

13:58

Ibn al-Qayyim رحمه الله says that the nearest to Allah

14:00

are those who combine the traits of رؤوف and

14:04

So look at the Prophet

14:07

He was sent as a mercy to the

14:10

worlds, but then he was described as

14:12

14:16

merciful to the believers. Reflect of Allah's

14:20

mercy what you want of it. Mercy surrounded

14:22

you before you could even speak. So speak with

14:25

mercy and act with mercy and beg for His mercy.

14:30

Thank الرَّؤُوفِ for the mercies you never even

14:32

noticed and ask الرَّحِيمِ for the mercies you can't

14:35

even yet imagine. And then when all that fails, resort

14:40

back to الرَّحْمَٰنِ. There's this beautiful story of a

14:43

man that was appealing to Allah's mercy after feeling so

14:46

unworthy and so beautiful. He makes this du'a and he

14:49

says, يَا رَبَّ, O my Lord, You say, فَمَنْ تَابَ

14:53

14:59

repents after his wrongdoing, Allah accepts his

15:02

repentance and Allah is forgiving and merciful. And here

15:06

I am repenting for my wrongdoing. So Ya Allah,

15:12

So, O my Lord, ارْحَمْنِي, have mercy on me.

15:16

And if you don't find me worthy of that category,

15:18

well, You say, Ya Allah, وَكَانَ بِالْمُؤْمِنِينَ

15:21

رَحِيمًا, that You are especially merciful to the

15:24

believers. And Ya Rabb, أَنَا مُؤْمِنٌ, I am a believer,

15:27

ارْحَمْنِي, so have mercy on me. And if you don't

15:30

find me to fit in that category either, well, You

15:33

say, Ya Allah, وَرَحْمَتِي وَسِعَتْ كُلَّ شَيْءٍ, and my

15:37

mercy encompasses all things. وَأَنَا شَيْءٌ, and I am

15:41

something. فَرْحَمْنِي, so have mercy on me. And if I

15:45

fail to even achieve that, meaning I'm a nobody, I'm

15:48

nothing, then what a tragedy it is. But Ya Allah,

15:52

16:04

وَرَحْمَةٌ, those who when afflicted with a tragedy say,

16:06

"We belong to Allah and to Him we return. We

16:09

send upon them the blessings of their Lord and His

16:12

mercy." So here I am saying, إِنَّا لِلَّهِ وَإِنَّا

16:15

إِلَيْهِ رَاجِعُونَ, فَرْحَمْنِي, so have mercy on me. You

16:18

see, dear brothers and sisters, mercy is not Allah's

16:21

mood. It's His constant nature. And wherever you are right

16:24

now, it's not out of your reach because you are

16:28

something and His mercy encompasses

16:30

everything.

16:38

Yah Rahman, Your throne You wrote mercy upon Yourself.

16:44

You were merciful before there was anyone to receive

16:46

mercy. Embrace every part of me with that mercy,

16:51

my past with its scars, my present with its needs,

16:54

my future with its uncertainty.

16:57

Ya Rahim, let me taste the mercy

17:00

You keep for those who return.

17:02

Reward me with the mercy I have yet to know

17:04

and raise me to the highest place in Paradise despite

17:07

my lows. Ya Ra'uf, cover me from storms

17:11

I don't see coming. Mend me

17:13

before I break.

17:17

Spare me from trials of every kind. Let Your mercy

17:20

reach me in ways I'll only understand when

17:22

I finally meet

17:23

You.
