The Apple iPhone 17 Event was Disappointing | Here's Why.
FULL TRANSCRIPT
The Apple event is over. Here's exactly
what you need to know. Specifically,
does it make sense to upgrade your
iPhone, your watch, or your AirPods?
We're going to talk about that. Spoiler
alert, it's going to come down to how
much of a credit you could get for your
old phone. If you could get 1,100 bucks
for your old phone, you can buy a new
one for 1,100 bucks, it might be worth
it because you're getting at least some
of those slightly improved chips with no
extra cost. That said, let's look at the
differences. There actually aren't that
many. So, what I've done is I've stacked
them up. Apple 3, 2, and one on the
Ultra watch. We'll start with the watch.
I have the Ultra 1, so I'll be looking
at that. Uh the Ultra 1 would upgrade
with a 15 a 50% uh greater level of
brightness, so more nits. You'll get
3,000 nits on the two or the three and
only 2,000 on the original one. You get
hyper attention notifications, which
both the two and the three have had.
sleep apnea notifications both the two
and three have had. Uh as you could see
here, you get emergency SOS via
satellite. That is the big new feature
on the watch 3. So uh you also get 5G
capability for data, which I will say if
you're ever using an Apple Watch uh and
you're trying to use Siri, which uh
version two and three do have ondevice
Siri uh but version one does not and so
you have to wait for Siri to connect to
cellular. This could be very
frustrating. The ondevice series
certainly is going to help if you move
from one to two or three. But then being
5G capable is probably also going to
help in the event that let's say you're
um you know trying to communicate with I
don't know Siri about I don't know AI
functionality in the future or
something. Who knows? I'm not entirely
sure why you need faster internet on the
watch since mostly what I at least use
it for would be maybe listening to an
audiobook. I could download those a
little faster I suppose although that's
not particularly slow or texting. Maybe
looking at my calendar or reminders. So
5G capable, cool. How much of a
difference does it make? Not entirely
sure. Uh again it's going to depend on
that resale value as to whether this
makes sense to upgrade on the prior
devices. But on device Siri I do think
is valuable because hey I want to send a
message to somebody. I want it to happen
fast. I hate that pinwheeling that you
get without on device. But two and three
have had that. Supposedly you're going
to be getting more battery life. Uh
about 20% more battery life than the two
or the one. 42 hours versus 36 hours.
That puts you about 16.6% more battery
life. the uh actual size of the screen
is a little bit larger. You could see
right here it implies the bezel is a
little smaller. I've got a 1245 mm
square area versus the 1185 previously,
which is about a 5% larger actual
display, even though the overall frame
is still 49 mm. So, you're getting a
little bit more bang for your buck
there, if you will. Now, otherwise, same
storage size, same wireless chip, a
little bit faster processor supposedly
as the S10, uh, which I'm I'm still not
sure how much they actually improve on
that versus just changing the name every
single year because it came out a year
later. This is big, though. You do move
from that LTE modem to 5G plus LTE and
the satellite connectivity. That's a big
deal. You're also moving to Wi-Fi 4 with
both 2.4 and 5 GHz. Again, still
confused as to how much that extra speed
is going to help me. But again, if I
could get uh a good tradein value on the
one, um maybe it makes sense. Let's just
do a quick look here and just grab some
of the basics right here uh to see if we
can get a trade-in value uh estimate
here. So, get a tradein value. Who made
the watch? Apple trade in value. I'm
going to have to on the watch. Oh boy.
So, we'll get a trade in value here and
I'll let you know what it says because
to me that I mean if it goes up to 300
bucks for the Apple Watch Ultra 1, it's
still going to put you somewhere around
4 to 500 bucks of a delta that you're
paying. And so, you're paying that 4 or
500 bucks really for 5G. And if we
figure out, hey, is that worth it?
Maybe. But other than that, I'm not
entirely convinced uh this is really
gamechanging in terms of um what uh new
features we got here on the watch. Onto
my series again, maybe. But the two
already had that. So, if you're
upgrading from the two with even more of
a challenge, uh is your watch free from
damage? Yes. Are the buttons free of
scratches? Yes. Uh does the band work?
Yes. Ah, 225 bucks. So, if I go buy a
new one at $799 plus tax, it's going to
put me at $862
minus a tradein value on this watch of
$255. It's going to cost me $600
to upgrade from the one uh to this uh to
this new device
to be determined. Is that worth it? I
think everybody's going to make up their
own mind on that one. Let's do the same
now for the uh iPhone Pro Max series
here. So, I have the 16 Pro Max right
here, and we're going to compare that to
both the Air and the 17. You can see the
Air and the 7. The Air is on the right,
the 17's on the left. Almost copy and
paste features here. So, I'm really just
going to look for the differences. If I
upgrade, I'll get the ceramic sealed
seal uh shield back, which honestly, I
usually don't use a case, but I started
using a case because I've been too lazy
to get this repaired. Uh, but it's
started to cut uh me sometimes when I'm
using it. So, I have to be careful
because I mean, after all, it is damaged
glass right there. So, you know, I'm
probably uh somebody who could benefit
off of uh having a little bit of a
stronger back uh on the actual phone. Uh
and this is from sid sitting down with
short shorts and slipping out of your
pocket from like 2 feet up. It it blows
my mind that every year they tell us the
glass is better and then somehow it just
still cracks. So, I I I I don't see many
differences, but whatever. Uh, so, uh,
all the cores here are basically the
same. They just added neural
accelerators. Now, battery life, somehow
they say, even though both of these
models right here are the no SIM model,
somehow they're saying the battery life
is going to move up by 18%. Which that
is pretty impressive. Uh, and they are
using the ability to record forward and
backwards via dual capture. This has
been available through apps, but the
apps have been pretty clunky. So,
integrating this, I think, is very
exciting. Ultra stabilized video. Cool.
All right. Even more stabilization. They
have that on the air version as well, as
long as well as dual capture. The air
version really just seems like you're
giving up about 12 hours of battery. So,
you're just sort of slapping down the
battery power there. Uh, as far as the
actual chips, you have almost the same
amount of cores, one less GPU core on
the Air, but uh, you still get the A7
Pro chip in the Air. So, really the
extra thickness on the uh, Pro Max is
really just battery life is what it
appears to be uh, on on first glance
going through this. the Fusion cameras,
that's really just so they can crop uh
you know, they give you higher
megapixels and they crop in to make it
seem like you're getting a higher
digital zoom uh or or uh optical zoom
rather is what they're trying to build
off of. So, you do have the macro camera
in the pro system uh which you do not
have the macro camera on the single
camera for the Air. So, you do lose a
little bit of benefit there. Uh see, you
have one 2x and then here you get that
uh wide lens as well. you don't have.
So, wide and zoom lens. Uh then we've
got uh let's see here. Uh okay, USB 20x
faster transfers. That's the same as the
prior model. Mag Safe, that's the same
as the prior model. Uh you've got uh
pricing here did go up uh about 100
bucks, which I was somewhat surprised
by. And the Air starts at $9.99.
So, uh did take up a little bit on
pricing. And then as far as the display,
uh, everything here looks broadly the
same except for this. A little brighter
outside. You have 50% more nits for that
outdoor brightness. Okay, that's nice.
So outdoor brightness did get an
enhancement. We have uh weight. It's a
little heavier. It's 233 g versus 227. I
mean, 6 more gram. It's 2.6% 6% heavier
relative to the Air. The Air weighs uh
let's see 165 divided by 233. The Air
weighs about 29% less than than the uh
iPhone 17 Pro Max. That's pretty
impressive. Uh okay, Apple Intelligence.
Uh this is all copy and paste the same
here. Copy and paste. Copy paste. This
is almost the same except you get those
neural accelerators. Telephoto lens had
a smaller resolution previously, so
that's all updated now to the 48.
Spatial photos. Wow, dude. That's a
scam. No spatial photos on the iPhone
air. That's an asterisk in my opinion. I
mean, like, how often are you really
doing the spatial photos? still like I
think I when I take pictures of my kids
uh with the phone I I try my best to
turn on the spatial photos because I
when I look back at them I think it's
cool how like you can kind of see the
3Dish of it or you put on the Vision Pro
just to look at photos. I don't really
use the Vision Pro for much else. Uh
dual capture up to 4K Dolby Vision 40 uh
4K uh 30 fps is fine. They both have
that. Yeah. No spatial recording at all
on the iPhone uh Air. So, you lose
spatial recording and you lose the
battery life by going for the Air versus
the new one. H, it's a little
disappointing. You might not care. I
personally with seven kids, I I kind of
care about that. So, I think that that
probably kills the Air for me, although
I don't know how much of a contender
that was anyway. Uh, let's see here
because I just want the, you know, the
battery life. Uh, so definitely a boost
in battery life. Again, 39 divided by
33, that's 18%. That's pretty good. I'll
take that. Uh, and then we have up to
50% charge in 20 minutes. So, with a 40
watt adapter. Oh, that's actually nice.
Twice uh the fast charging wattage now
uh uh availability, which is great. And
that's going to increase your speed to
charge to 50%
uh by about 43%. That's pretty good.
That's pretty good. I do like that. Now,
I do I want to find out what the uh Oh,
you get better Bluetooth as well. So,
apparently that'll hopefully help with
AirDrop. And then uh supposedly, I don't
see it here, but supposedly the C1X chip
is going to be a a chip that's twice as
fast of a modem as the previous chip
that they used uh for uh for cellular.
Now, I think that's a big deal because I
like to upload videos and I like them
uploading very very rapidly. Uh I don't
know though that the chip is the
bottleneck. Uh because I think it's
probably more T-Mobile or Verizon or
AT&T or whomever you're using that's the
bottleneck for your actual upload speeds
on the phone, right? So, uh you know,
okay, these are decent upgrades. I think
this is going to come down to, you know,
how do I feel about uh, you know, a
tradein credit. So, the iPhone 16 Pro
Max only gives you $700 towards uh, a
trade-in value. So, you get a $700
tradein value for the prior phone. And
let me see what my storage is just to
understand the difference here. So my
storage
uh oh wow a little challenging to
actually about here we go. Okay. Uh so
we have iPhone 16 Pro Max iPhone storage
512. So I have the 512 that's going to
cost me $1,400
to upgrade to this. And they didn't even
ask me what size I have over here. So
they're going to give me 700 bucks
regardless of the size. I get no extra
value for the size. That's a little bit
of a pisser. So, I'm going to get 700
bucks. Uh, it's going to cost me $13.99
plus sales tax. It's going to cost me
$1,510
minus $700 for the prior phone. It's
going to cost me $800
to get an 18% battery life improvement.
Hopefully a little bit more of an
improvement on the cellular modem,
better Bluetooth,
uh, and the dual capture video, the
front and back.
All right. Okay. So, that's that. Then
you've got the AirPods Pro 3. Now, I
have to say, they they say 4x more
active noise cancelling than the
original, but that's only 2x better than
the two. Uh, and the live translation
product is great. uh if you need that. I
mean, maybe that's cool when you're
traveling. You know, I was just in
Japan, but my concern is how like is
that going to rely on connecting to my
phone and then actually having a good
connection? Like what's the latency here
going to be? Because if the latency
sucks, it's going to be really annoying.
But what I do think is cool is heart
rate sensing during workouts. If you're
not an EyeWatch user, that's actually
cool because now you could track your
footsteps. You get more battery life as
well. You could track your footsteps.
You could track
exercise and your workouts basically
with uh um your your AirPods, which is
kind of remarkable. So
impressive. Uh and they did a great job
here uh including that. I don't know
that it justifies upgrading from the
priors, but you know, it's it's another
year. It's another set of incremental
updates from Apple
upgrade on all of them. It would cost me
$810 to get the Pro Max. It's going to
cost to get the new watch. We said it
was going to be $255 less than it's
going to cost about $67 to upgrade the
watch if I remember correctly. And then
if you got a new one of these, $2.49
plus a little bit of tax. It's going to
cost me about 1,700 bucks to get
basically the latest and greatest from
Apple. Uh, and
what what am I really getting with that?
I'm getting heart rate monitoring in the
AirPods. For me, I don't care cuz I have
the watch. I'm getting the dual video on
the phone. I again, I don't know how
much that matters. I'll I'll show you. I
have this app called Double, and I don't
use it that much, honestly. But, uh,
I'll I'll go ahead and put that up on
screen here so you can see it uh how
this functions. And there we go. So this
is the previous dual function that they
had. And if I take a photo or or I do a
little video clip here. This is just the
third party app. I could then after the
fact decide, you know, where do I want
to put myself?
It's a little glitchy. It's It's okay,
but like I'd rather the Apple version of
that integrated, but kind of like
technically I already have that and I
don't really choose to use it often.
So, I don't know how how beneficial that
is. The extra battery life, you know, I
do like that. I'm kind of tired about
having to carry around uh uh you know
battery packs all the time, but I don't
know that an 18% battery life is going
to make a difference. I think I'm still
gonna have to carry around battery
packs. So, not much is going to change
there. And I just keep buying more and
more anchor packs. Uh so, like pretty
incremental update here from Apple. Uh
obviously, you know, everybody's going
to make up their own mind in terms of
how like is is this finally worth an
upgrade? Uh is this like really exciting
for Apple stock for me?
No, it's and not a surprise. You know,
as the event concluded, the stock is
trending towards its trend line again,
233. Remember, you always get my trend
lines and and my call outs on what I'm
seeing with technical analysis as well
as my 10 stocks to buy for the next 10

incremental at best. Does it make sense
to upgrade? I mean, if you want to blow
some money, why not? But beyond that,
I'm not very excited.
