hello there i'm tom griffin welcome to

0:02

episode one of owning a grinder

0:05

we're going to talk about the different

0:07

types of grinders the results that come

0:10

from the different types of grinders and

0:12

when and where to use each of these

0:13

different types of grinders

0:15

[Music]

0:21

to start let's talk about the different

0:23

types of grinders that are available on

0:24

market

0:26

to my knowledge excluding hand grinders

0:28

there's four types you have direct

0:30

grinds past the planetary active

0:33

planetary and counter rotational

0:36

national in our line of grinders offers

0:39

three types but our helix is actually

0:42

two different types in one and it's one

0:44

of the only ones on the market or the

0:45

only one on the market that i know that

0:47

can do that

0:48

so we'll start over here we'll talk

0:50

about

0:51

direct grind and passive planetary

0:54

direct grind is great when you are going

0:56

to be removing a coating off of the

0:59

concrete or the floor and you have to

1:01

use tools that are directional meaning

1:03

they have to move in a specific way in

1:06

order to be effective

1:08

past the planetary is great for prepping

1:10

concrete the tooling on the bottom of

1:12

the grinder is going to follow the path

1:14

of least resistance it's still going to

1:16

leave a really

1:18

nice even scratch pattern

1:20

but it's got a lot less moving parts and

1:22

a lot less potential maintenance for you

1:27

active planetary so

1:29

that's going to be any machine that's

1:31

planetary where your main hub spins in

1:34

one direction and your satellites spin

1:36

in the opposite

1:37

and they're either gear driven or belt

1:40

driven

1:41

ours is a kevlar belt driven on the

1:43

8274-4

1:46

it's really great for an even scratch

1:48

pattern so we're talking about polishing

1:50

or something where really having an even

1:53

perfectly even surface profile

1:57

you're going to want to go with a

1:58

profile

1:59

or a counter rotational on a counter

2:01

rotational you've got different heads

2:03

that interlock and the tools will

2:06

actually as they move

2:07

kind of interlock you've got two heads

2:09

or more that spin in opposite directions

2:12

of each other

2:13

so that kind of combines the best of

2:15

both worlds they're gear driven

2:18

but you can use your

2:20

omnidirectional tools so your diamonds

2:22

but you can also put directional tools

2:25

on there for removing coatings and

2:27

prepping the floor in a specific way so

2:30

now that i've explained the different

2:32

types of grinders let's talk about the

2:33

different environments where i as you

2:35

know tom's concrete prep might use these

2:38

different machines

2:40

so the direct grind or the passive

2:43

planetary

2:44

we're talking about the occasional user

2:46

or the entry level user

2:49

small spaces commercial offices where

2:52

it's harder to get a big grinder in

2:54

homes garages because this is a 110 volt

2:57

machine

2:58

so as long as you've got you know a 20

3:00

amp breaker then you're all set you're

3:02

good to go

3:04

this machine isn't really used for

3:06

polishing so we're really talking about

3:08

surface prep with this we're talking

3:10

about removing coatings removing paint

3:13

and making sure that your profile on the

3:16

concrete is good for your next

3:17

application

3:19

the 8274-4

3:22

great small polishing machine it can do

3:26

the same prep

3:27

that the helix can do but it can also

3:30

polish up to a 3000 mirror finish

3:33

so this has a lot more versatility on

3:36

there

3:37

and you could still use this in small

3:39

commercial you can still use this in

3:40

homes

3:42

but it is a little bit bigger so you

3:44

know here in colorado where i'm at the

3:46

helix is a lot easier to get down into a

3:48

basement uh for um quote-unquote man

3:51

cave uh then you know trying to get the

3:54

8274-4 down there or any of our bigger

3:57

grinders

4:00

gp 500 our gp 700 are bigger counter

4:03

rotational grinders

4:05

those are going to be great for larger

4:07

open spaces you can still do a garage

4:09

with them they're going to prep a lot

4:11

faster

4:12

than the 110 volt machines but we're

4:14

talking about 220

4:16

single phase or 220 three-phase power

4:19

not as readily available in commercial

4:21

spaces you can still get some of that at

4:23

home or if you're running out for

4:25

generators

4:26

but i would use these maybe in a smaller

4:29

warehouse like we have here at our

4:30

training facility

4:32

or you know a bigger garage or patio

4:35

outside

4:36

that would be where i would use some of

4:38

these bigger machines

4:40

one that we don't have featured here are

4:41

gp 3000 that's what we're talking about

4:43

larger warehouses larger open spaces

4:46

because you just need some room to

4:48

maneuver the actual machine around

4:52

[Music]

5:05

[Music]

5:39

here's a great demonstration of the

5:41

different types of scratch patterns that

5:42

our machines will make

5:44

starting here

5:46

both of these are with the helix

5:48

one here on my right

5:50

is the passive planetary so a lot of

5:52

people think that even though it's

5:53

passive planetary that it follows a path

5:55

of least resistance that it's going to

5:57

be a really uneven scratch pattern but

6:00

what you can see here

6:02

as i came to the end of this row it's a

6:04

really even scratch pattern and even

6:06

going back we've got a lot of highs and

6:08

lows our concrete here is pretty poor as

6:10

far as

6:11

levelness goes but you can really see

6:14

that it leaves a very even scratch

6:16

pattern and that it really does profile

6:18

across the full working width of the

6:21

head

6:22

directly below me

6:24

is also the helix but this is the direct

6:26

drive

6:27

so you can actually see the full circles

6:30

that the diamonds made as they went

6:32

so

6:33

that's where when you're using a

6:34

directional tooling like a carbide chip

6:36

or a pcd it's really going to force the

6:38

tools in that direction and it's really

6:40

going to help

6:42

work across the full width and make it

6:44

very even nice profile

6:48

beautiful star pattern

6:50

is reminiscent of anyone that's ever

6:53

seen a

6:54

active planetary machine so any

6:56

planetary machine out there on the

6:57

market is going to leave a scratch

6:58

pattern in the star shape similar to

7:01

this because literally your diamond

7:03

tools are following that sort of pattern

7:05

so it really forces the tools around it

7:08

leaves a very even profile

7:10

across the full working width

7:13

and then last but not least is our

7:16

counter rotational grinder so you can

7:18

actually see there's kind of two

7:20

competing circles here they slightly

7:23

overlap but not really and as you move

7:26

on the

7:27

counter rotational machine as i walked

7:29

you're actually kind of grinding like

7:31

this so you're overlapping each of those

7:34

so you don't end up with cornrows um and

7:36

then also when you would make your next

7:38

pass you're just gonna barely do it on

7:39

the outside

7:40

uh so just a quick note the concrete

7:42

that i did this demo on we have hardener

7:45

densified it probably about eight or

7:47

nine times it's been polished multiple

7:50

times

7:51

this is about as hard of concrete as you

7:53

can get and doing a really quick pass

7:55

with our machines on here was able to

7:57

produce this so just imagine what would

7:59

happen if you were actually on a job

8:01

site and taking your time

8:03

these machines would be able to open

8:05

this up beautifully whichever one you

8:06

choose

8:13
