And here we are honored to welcome Dr.

0:04

Maria Luisa Manga. And we are very

0:07

thankful po that you are here with us

0:09

today and may kindly ask you to

0:12

introduce about yourself and share a

0:14

little bit about your professional

0:16

background.

0:17

>> Okay. My name is Maria Luisa Toralba

0:20

Manggubat. I'm an OBGYN.

0:23

Um I'm a graduate of UERM.

0:26

Huwag na nating pag-usapan yung year.

0:30

Um, and I had my residency training

0:33

inics and gynecology here. Uh, this used

0:37

to be called medical center Manila.

0:39

Ngayon may nickname na Manila Med. Uh,

0:42

presently I am the chairman of the

0:44

department of OBGYN

0:47

um and the president of the medical

0:50

staff organization. I'm also member of

0:53

the management committee of the

0:55

hospital.

0:57

Ah starting up.

1:00

Yan po. Very inspired. Ang dami na pong

1:02

narating and hopefully us the near

1:05

future we are involved to make our own

1:06

steps din po and

1:09

>> hopefully po. So moving on po with our

1:12

first question. So we will focus more on

1:14

the personal approach. So we would like

1:17

to know po about your leadership style

1:19

and how has it changed throughout your

1:21

years of experience?

1:23

>> Actually um I've never thought of myself

1:26

as a leader because I'm more of like a

1:29

um should I say good c-orker ganyan. It

1:34

just so happened that nung high school I

1:36

was awarded Jerry Rojas leadership award

1:39

which was a surprise to me also. And

1:42

then the uh uh the mga madre the sisters

1:46

there said that the reason why they

1:49

chose me is that they see they saw my uh

1:53

how I uh interact with my uh members and

1:58

then uh of course lead them to

2:01

something. So I would guess na uh it

2:05

hasn't really changed a lot kasi uh even

2:09

now that I'm used to be the head of the

2:12

center for Women's Health, we establish

2:14

that here. That's a specialty um center

2:17

here. Magkakasama roon OB, ultrasound

2:22

infertility uh cancer uh

2:26

copic detection iyon. Ah the breast

2:29

center also and the perinatology.

2:32

So I had that vision and I uh uh

2:36

suggested that to our chairman at that

2:38

time and she like the idea. So parang

2:43

ganun yung yung gusto ko eh. So you have

2:45

an idea but before you act on it, you

2:47

ask muna if if it looks feasible. So

2:51

it's more like consultative no I consult

2:55

the others before I go ahead and push

2:57

through with the project. So that hasn't

3:00

changed now that I'm the chairman. Um if

3:03

I have uh like I I became the chairman

3:05

only in October. So I had to uh of

3:08

course review yung structure yung

3:11

organization structure ng department and

3:16

uh ah then makikita ko the possible

3:19

projects and before acting on it I

3:22

consult those who are involved.

3:25

also as a president of the medical staff

3:28

organization ganon din iyung ginagawa

3:30

ko. Um I review the past projects and

3:34

see if we can uh improve on it uh and

3:38

then try to look for new ideas uh and

3:42

then consult again the uh those who will

3:46

be impacted. So I I have no training in

3:50

management or leadership but I guess it

3:54

uh it has evolved maybe with kasi nga

3:58

ngayon more syempre mas older na ako so

4:00

mas ah mas sure na ako of what I want

4:05

parang ganyan and but I don't push it.

4:08

Titingnan mo muna if it will be for the

4:10

good

4:11

>> ah feasible and for the good of many

4:14

people ganon. Grabe very meticulous po

4:17

talaga. So it's really for the better

4:19

talaga po. I think more on like parang

4:22

democratic po na leadership kasi you are

4:25

opo kasi pa you're looking at the you're

4:28

getting ideas po and

4:30

>> consulting kasi I don't believe yung

4:33

yung yung masyado kang diktador ganyan

4:37

na I want this and I want this to happen

4:40

and kahit napahirapan mo na yung mga tao

4:43

kasi you have to be able to

4:45

>> move no to be able to adjust no

4:48

>> maybe that's because I'm Pisces

4:50

ah what ah madali kaming ano baang Pis

4:54

dalawang ganyan so you can go both ways

4:57

depending on the tides opo to be a good

5:00

leader talaga you have to be a good

5:01

follower as well opo in fact sa OB yan

5:05

ang laging sinasabi sa amin eh because

5:08

you start as an assistant no and then

5:10

before you become the surgeon uh we were

5:13

told na before you become a a good

5:15

surgeon you should be a good assistant

5:18

kasi alam mo kung anong nangyari

5:20

Yes po. So with this po ayun po we would

5:23

like to know what leadership skills do

5:25

you think is essential and bakit po siya

5:27

important? I guess it would be uh first

5:33

of all may vision ka and then siguro

5:36

adaptability ganon yung as I mentioned

5:39

kanina na you should be able to see the

5:43

good side and the bad side and try to

5:46

weigh

5:47

>> uh what will be best. So ah

5:51

wala na siguro akong masabi ganon. Opo.

5:53

>> Syempre siguro dapat maganda rin ung

5:56

convincing power mo para sumunod sila.

5:58

Sao opo. You have to build a good

6:01

relationship po nga kaso. So with

6:03

regards nga po sa adaptability. So may

6:05

good and bad side na as you have

6:07

mention. So almost always po meron

6:10

talagang mga challenges kayong

6:12

ma-encounter. So meron po ba kayong

6:14

strategies or like are there any ways

6:16

that you use po to solve it kapag may

6:19

na-enco po kayong challenges? Well, ah

6:23

siguro as far as doctors are concerned

6:25

syempre medyo medyo matataas ang mga

6:27

ego.

6:29

So ah mostly yung yung ah

6:34

nacha-challenge lang ako is pagka

6:37

unreasonable yung mga

6:41

issues na bini-bring up. So I before I

6:45

ah syempre ayaw mo namang awayin kaagad

6:47

kasi kapwa mong doktor yon. Um, I try to

6:51

see muna kung ano where he or she is

6:53

coming from and then from there um I try

6:57

to see where we can meet in the middle

6:59

and then

7:01

siguro kasi nga um yun nga yung ang

7:05

pagiging adoptable ko. So kahit na yung

7:08

mga difficult people I am able to talk

7:11

to them and then ah yun nga na medyo

7:15

nahihimasmasan mo yung galit nila ' ba

7:18

dahil ah pinapakita mo na nag-listen ka

7:22

that you listen to their opinion and uh

7:26

before yung ah coming up with yung ah

7:32

idea na hindi mo parang ganyan ba hindi

7:35

mo sila pinakinggan. Ito ang gusto ko.

7:38

So when they realize that you took into

7:41

consideration yung kanilang opinion,

7:45

kanilang ideas, then it's much easier to

7:49

uh get them to

7:52

ah ano listen and Yeah. Yeah. And opo

7:57

>> and follow. Mm.

7:59

>> Parang ganon. Opo. Kasi it's really

8:01

important to know both sides po, not

8:03

just one side po with regards.

8:07

So um with regards naman po sa patient

8:10

side so what do you think po yung

8:13

importance po ng um leadership decision

8:16

skills ah decision making skills with

8:19

regards to the effect of sufficient

8:22

outcomes and overall health care po or

8:24

qualitative care? Well, uh it has always

8:27

been my style to um

8:30

explain to the patient what is going on

8:33

ano uh why I want this test done kasi

8:36

Kasi it's not a joke ano kasi maraming

8:39

mga tests and procedures that are so

8:41

expensive

8:42

>> and uh they might think na super flu mga

8:46

yun but no I tell them the importance no

8:50

and what I want to find out from the

8:52

laboratories I do not just request for

8:55

labs or procedures dahil gusto ko lang

8:58

ah kasi those labs and procedures will

9:03

guide me kung ano yung susunod na

9:05

gagawin kasi you No medicine naman is

9:07

not straight forward eh. A + B = C ' ba

9:10

parang ganyan. Ngayon A + B pwedeng C,

9:13

D, E. Maraming marami kang pwedeng

9:16

magawa. Ah so um it's important that in

9:22

the decision making the patient is aware

9:26

uh of uh what are uh what uh should be

9:30

done, what cannot be done. Kasi may mga

9:33

iba kung ano-ano yung mga sina-suggest.

9:36

lalo na this times ang daming TikTok and

9:39

social media kung ano-anong sinasabi

9:42

doon na minsan hindi mo na maintindihan

9:45

kung where those ideas came from. So ah

9:49

you should be able to explain to the

9:51

patient kung ano yung sa tingin mo ang

9:54

tama. Now ah of course there are

9:56

patients na medyo matigas ang ulo na

9:59

that they will insist on what they want.

10:01

So uh I just tell them na this is uh

10:05

supposed to be yung decision ko. But if

10:07

that's your decision then hindi ko naman

10:09

sila kokontrahin. Maybe you can look for

10:11

another doctor.

10:13

>> Yes. Hindi naman sila

10:14

>> who will comply with your

10:16

wants oce ganon. Pero chances are uh

10:21

when you're able to explain to them

10:24

fully kung ano yun and then of course

10:26

you also tell them the risks ano the

10:29

advantage in the risk kasi gaganyan ang

10:32

ano eh ang medicine eh kung minsan nasa

10:34

gitna ka talaga hindi mo alam so you

10:36

have to tell them both ways that's what

10:38

is called informed consent

10:40

>> yes oppo before you actually do the

10:42

procedure po no true

10:44

>> ayun po. With regards naman po sa

10:46

universal health care

10:47

>> Mhm. What do you think po is

10:51

challenge in implementing the universal

10:53

healthcare local po? The number one

10:55

challenge is the funding. Ano kasi

10:58

promise ng Phil Health o babayaran namin

11:00

babayaran namin and then millionmilyon

11:02

na yung utang nila sa ospital. But uh

11:06

well we did uh once siguro sain na lang

11:09

natin we were uh during the PO annual

11:12

convention Manila Med was actually cited

11:15

as one as as the first one to implement

11:21

sa universal health care. set up a lying

11:24

in clinic that's that's just there in

11:27

front sa may Pearl Manila

11:29

>> so that those uh who want to avail off

11:33

yung ah mas mababa na panganganak and uh

11:38

can can go there. We also implemented

11:41

the no balance being zero libreng

11:44

panganganak for those who are

11:48

ph health members tapos uncomplicated

11:51

iyung pregnancies nila. So uh and that's

11:54

the reason why uh the Philippine OBGY

11:58

and Society actually uh cited us sa ano

12:03

lang naman sa slidh na o Manila Medo ang

12:06

ginawa so why don't you follow parang

12:08

something like that. It's nice to know

12:10

po yung Manila med parang may action

12:12

sila when regards sa ganon na very

12:14

proactive po. So regards naman po sa ba

12:18

we were we discussed po about

12:19

leadership. What about po sa manager

12:22

real skills? What do you think po is uh

12:25

important in using the manager real

12:27

skills with regards to handling the

12:28

organization?

12:30

Um you should be able to uh delegate

12:35

kasi you cannot claim to be the best in

12:37

everything. So uh you try to uh identify

12:42

people who you think will be best in

12:45

this area, in another area. Kunwari ito

12:48

sa socials, ito sa academics, no? Ah ito

12:52

sa marketing parang ganyan. So um I

12:55

guess as a manager you should be able to

12:58

do that and not think that ikaw lang ang

13:01

magaling sa lahat then that you become a

13:04

dictator.

13:06

Yeah. I sa tingin ko. You should be able

13:10

to identify the skills

13:12

>> uh of the people around you, the people

13:17

under you. And then ah para mas maganda,

13:20

mas master po yung delegation. Opo. Ayan

13:24

po. So with regards to everything that

13:26

you have mentioned po, um, what do you

13:29

think is an important leadership skill

13:31

that health care workers should employ

13:34

in the future? Naku,

13:38

siguro yun din yung you should be able

13:41

to ah lead.

13:44

Ah but uh

13:47

yung ano mo uh don't look down on the

13:53

hindi como leader ka ikaw ng best no? So

13:56

you should be able to leave them without

13:59

making the people uh parang subservient

14:04

to you. Parang angano mo lang sa kanila

14:07

na yeah ako lang yung feeling leader

14:10

ngayon pero one of you can become a

14:12

leader someday. Parang bibigyan mo sila

14:14

ng ano and and I guess maganda rin yan

14:17

na magte-train ka ng susunod sao parang

14:20

ano so parang may transfer ah ng ah

14:25

anong tawag nito delegation of

14:28

responsibilities in preparation for

14:30

their leadership role in the future.

14:35

So actually that concludes po our

14:36

questions. Would you like to say

14:38

anything else po? Lalo na sa mga future

14:41

health care leaders.

14:45

Ang hirap ano kasi um I don't know if if

14:50

I should be a model ng ano mga leaders

14:53

kasi each of us has their own skills and

14:56

uh if you are able to identify that

14:59

skill then hone it no and uh yun nga um

15:03

I guess uh you should not be uh parang

15:08

too

15:10

proud no and uh think of yourself

15:14

uh above the others. So ah yun siguro

15:18

ang gusto kong i-impart na um although

15:21

you will become a leader someday ah do

15:25

not

15:26

parang hwag naman lumaki masyado dito na

15:29

ah parang ikaw na ang talagang

15:31

pinakamagaling. You should be able to

15:34

see the uh ano skills of others also

15:38

their strengths also. And ah yun nga

15:41

i-home mo sila para ma

15:45

next leader kasi you know um parang mga

15:48

teachers no? Yes. Pagka may tinuro ka

15:51

you teach your students and then when

15:53

your student

15:55

excels parang pride mo yun eh na ikaw

15:59

yung nag ah nag-umpisa or nagturo or

16:02

nag-home nung kanilang galit. So I guess

16:05

ah for the future parang ganun. Gusto mo

16:08

na eventually when they become leaders

16:11

ipa-pass on naman nila dun sa younger

16:15

generation yung mga natutunan. Ayun.

16:18

Thank you so much. Very inspiring again.

16:21

So like what Doc mentioned, it's really

16:23

important to be humble and to be down to

16:25

earth and huwag maging madamot sa

16:27

knowledge. You should be able to always

16:29

share your knowledge lalo na sa other

16:31

health care professionals in the field.

16:34

And again, that concludes our MPX

16:36

episode today. Thank you so much for

16:37

tuning in.
