0:00

how's it going everybody this is btw

0:01

bush today i'm going to talk about how a

0:03

hardware wallet works and how you can

0:05

get started in it first of all i've

0:07

owned kryptos for several years now

0:09

including a little bit of bitcoin a lot

0:11

of dogecoin and i've always wondered

0:14

about hardware wallets because i keep on

0:16

hearing it is more secure than keeping

0:19

all of this on a website somewhere

0:24

before i begin i'd like to thank ledger

0:25

which provided me with this ledger nano

0:28

x hardware wallet without them sending

0:30

it to me i would not have been able to

0:32

produce this video now cryptocurrencies

0:34

are stored on a distributed ledger which

0:38

is kind of like

0:39

who owes what how much coin is in each

0:42

wallet and all of this is in a

0:44

distributed nature so everybody you know

0:47

there's multiple copies of this and the

0:49

network

0:50

always tries to verify each other so

0:52

it's really hard to forge something like

0:54

this and in order to gain access to one

0:57

of the wallets and say okay i want to

0:59

use this wallet to send some coin

1:02

somewhere else you need some kind of key

1:05

and this key is the secret to accessing

1:08

your cryptocurrencies when you use a

1:10

hardware wallet it's not like you put

1:13

your bitcoins or dogecoin inside this

1:16

wallet and if you lose it you're gonna

1:18

lose it forever the way they make these

1:20

wallets is that it holds the key

1:23

to

1:24

your crypto that is secured on the

1:27

network your crypto resides

1:29

on in the cloud somewhere across all

1:32

these different computers that has

1:33

copies of the ledger itself some people

1:36

might have like 10 000 bitcoins a lot of

1:39

money in one of these things and if you

1:41

lose it this is a huge deal

1:43

which makes you feel like

1:45

if you have a hardware wallet you don't

1:47

want to carry it around right because if

1:50

you lose it you don't want to lose

1:51

everything that you have but this is not

1:53

the way these things work if this

1:55

hardware wallet is lost or stolen

1:58

and some random guy goes and opens it up

2:01

right and then press the button and go

2:03

okay how do i access this and let's say

2:06

they have one of these as well they know

2:07

how to use it but the first thing that

2:09

comes up is it asks you for a pin code

2:12

without the pin code you cannot do

2:14

anything with this wallet you cannot

2:16

access all the stuff that's inside and

2:18

let's say you lose it and it was stolen

2:21

by a sophisticated hacker that knows how

2:24

to hack hardware this is what they say

2:26

there is a low risk that if your device

2:28

is

2:29

lost or stolen an experienced hacker

2:32

with engineering skills who has access

2:34

to the physical device could extract the

2:37

recovery seeds usually with these crypto

2:39

devices with security minded devices

2:43

they have built-in chips that have

2:45

security protocol in it that it's going

2:47

to hide a bunch of information within

2:50

the chip itself so it's not like you can

2:52

like rip open the chip and then

2:54

go and probe it or something even within

2:57

the chip itself it is encrypted as well

2:59

so you absolutely

3:01

need the pin code in order to even start

3:04

anything so when you lose this device

3:07

you don't lose all your bitcoin or

3:09

dogecoin

3:10

you have a copy of these 24 word seeds

3:14

you have to write this down somewhere

3:16

and they give you three cards to write

3:18

these 24 words and you're supposed to

3:22

keep them secure and these cards

3:24

is your actual wallet if you have access

3:27

to these cards or if someone stole these

3:30

cards then yes they can access your

3:34

cryptocurrencies if you actually lose a

3:36

hardware wallet it's not that big a

3:38

security breach you can actually wait a

3:41

while wait until your hardware wallet

3:44

comes it has a new recovery seed

3:47

and then you import all of those assets

3:50

from your old wallet that you lost

3:53

into your new wallet so you can think of

3:55

this as

3:57

your crypto assets goes with this 24

4:00

word recovery seed if you are kind of

4:02

nervous about

4:04

having your cryptos hang in midair

4:07

without you having a hardware wallet you

4:09

can actually get a software wallet

4:12

and then import all of those assets in

4:14

your software wallet just for the time

4:16

being and then when you get your

4:17

hardware wallet you re-import them again

4:19

and just go and put them

4:21

into your hardware wallet there is a pin

4:24

code if you enter in your pin code wrong

4:27

three times it's going to wipe the

4:29

device and then

4:30

it's as if you have a brand new wallet

4:33

over here it doesn't know anything about

4:35

anything so you're gonna have to start

4:37

it new again and then use your 24 word

4:40

recovery seed and then put those assets

4:42

back in here i have some dogecoin in

4:45

coinbase

4:46

i have a lot of dogecoin in uh robin

4:49

hood which right now they don't have

4:51

wallets yet i'm like number

4:53

957 000 or something but when they do

4:56

have wallets i can be certain that i can

4:58

just transfer as much as i want from

5:01

robinhood into this little hardware

5:03

wallet thing but for now i can do it

5:05

with coinbase which has

5:07

a

5:08

address

5:09

of you know my dogecoins and then i can

5:12

just

5:13

take the address from

5:14

this thing and then go on my coinbase

5:17

send it to

5:19

the address over here and you know i

5:21

sent 50 dogecoins the network fee is

5:24

actually 1.44 doge this equates to about

5:27

30 cents or so for me sending about 11

5:31

so this is

5:32

a little high it's like 3 or so it also

5:35

said the payment will be receiving an

5:37

estimated about six hours but um in my

5:40

experience when i sent it from coinbase

5:42

into my hardware wallet the time it took

5:45

was almost instantaneous so i didn't

5:47

even have to wait an hour or two it just

5:49

appeared right away now when i received

5:51

this device i was kind of nervous right

5:53

because i'm on the internet and i don't

5:56

want

5:57

some random person

5:59

hacking this device beforehand

6:02

and then sending it to me so i was a

6:04

little nervous there about using this

6:06

that's also why i only put a little bit

6:09

of dogecoin in there at first the way to

6:12

get a little bit more confidence is that

6:13

ledger is a company in france so

6:16

hopefully this package is arriving from

6:18

france and not somewhere in the middle

6:20

of russia or somewhere so i got that

6:22

check and also when i plugged this in it

6:25

also have a little check mark next to

6:28

the ledger nano x over here and it says

6:30

the device is genuine so

6:33

i need to trust

6:34

ledger in that

6:36

they have some way of you know verifying

6:39

the authenticity of this thing that it

6:41

has not been tampered with so this check

6:43

mark is another thing that can help uh

6:46

prove to yourself that this thing is

6:47

legitimate and that you know you're not

6:49

getting hacked or conned out of your

6:51

hard-earned cryptocurrencies they do

6:53

have a cheaper version than this ledger

6:57

nano x version they have the ledger nano

6:59

s which is 59 this one is 119

7:04

you have to install apps

7:07

to make it compatible with certain

7:09

cryptocurrencies so whichever ones that

7:12

you need to use you add those apps in

7:15

here one thing i did notice is that this

7:17

thing

7:18

has two megabytes of

7:20

storage you don't need that much storage

7:22

in order to store 24 words the ability

7:26

to secure

7:27

something that's inside so that it's

7:30

very hard to hack that's where the cost

7:32

comes from when you have the hardware

7:34

wallet it works in conjunction with an

7:36

app on your phone if you want to receive

7:39

bitcoin or dogecoin then you can show

7:41

the other person your qr code and then

7:43

they can do the transaction that way or

7:46

if you want to buy something you can use

7:48

your app

7:49

scan the qr code

7:51

of the merchant that you want to pay and

7:54

then you can pay with your wallet right

7:57

now not a lot of merchants will accept

7:58

dogecoin so there are places where you

8:00

can look up a map and it will show you

8:02

which merchants accepts it once dogecoin

8:04

becomes more widely accepted yes i'm

8:08

gonna go out there and and spend my

8:10

dogecoin a little bit more if you guys

8:12

are interested in getting a ledger nano
