FULL TRANSCRIPT

0:00

my name is Nikki and I'm a full-time

0:02

travel blogger behind the pin the map

0:03

project which was voted a top 100 travel

0:06

blog of 2015 I started the pin theat

0:08

project 2 years ago and since then have

0:11

been on assignment in various countries

0:13

from Colombia to France worked with

0:15

various Brands and bloggers and I'm soon

0:17

headed to Morocco in Vietnam for

0:19

aspiring travel bloggers out there the

0:21

following tips will help get you started

0:23

with your very own

0:25

blog the first step is choosing your

0:28

passion it seem seems pretty obvious but

0:31

you'd be surprised to know that before I

0:33

started the pin the map project I had a

0:36

fashion blog a restaurant vog and a

0:40

postgraduate vog to just kind of talk

0:43

about Life After College and all three

0:46

vogs are gone why because although I

0:49

enjoyed writing about those things and I

0:50

did enjoy you know the world of fashion

0:53

the world of food and just kind of

0:55

documenting Life After College it wasn't

0:57

enough to keep keep my interest and

1:01

blogging has to keep your

1:05

interest step two so you know what to

1:08

blog about but now what the next step is

1:12

where do you begin well there's a couple

1:15

different blogging platforms you have

1:16

WordPress you have blogger you have

1:18

Squarespace those are the main players I

1:22

like to use WordPress I think it's an

1:24

amazing blogging platform wordpress.com

1:27

is the free version and wordpress.org or

1:30

is the more complicated kind of elevated

1:32

version of Wordpress I started out on

1:36

wordpress.com and my URL used to be the

1:39

pin theat project.

1:41

wordpress.com once I started my blog I

1:45

just started writing and decided to give

1:48

myself 3 to four months to see if I

1:51

would really stick to the project I knew

1:53

I had kind of started and stop blogs in

1:55

the past so before I invested in it I

1:58

decided to just give give it time I

2:01

waited 3 months and every day I wrote

2:05

and every day my passion for the project

2:07

just flared and I decided I was going to

2:10

invest so I purchased my domain I hired

2:13

a website designer who is responsible

2:15

for the beautiful layout I'm obsessed

2:17

with today on a thin theat project and

2:20

she also helped me transfer my blog from

2:22

wordpress.com to wordpress.org which

2:25

allows for a lot more customization and

2:28

just freedom to kind of tweak your and

2:30

make it however you envision it

2:33

being step three also known as one of

2:37

the trickier steps is building your

2:39

following there's going to be a whole

2:41

separate video dedicated to building

2:43

your blog following and it's going to

2:45

look at organic ways to build it from

2:47

social media to Word of Mouth to ways

2:50

that are kind of not organic but you

2:53

know paying for advertising and other

2:55

ways to drive traffic to your blog I

2:57

used to work in advertising for some

2:59

major clients so this is going to be a

3:02

really good follow-up video on how to

3:04

build your blog following but for the

3:06

purpose of today let's look at building

3:08

your social media following so you

3:10

started the blog you know what you're

3:12

blogging about and you invested in it

3:14

and you want to get people to read your

3:16

content of course so what do you do you

3:19

start building yourself up on social

3:21

media social media is key Twitter

3:25

Facebook Instagram YouTube get all the

3:28

social media channels you can and pour

3:30

your time into it if you're going into

3:32

travel blogging Instagram is so

3:35

important because travel blogging is all

3:37

about transporting your readers to a

3:39

different destination and photos and

3:41

videos are incredible for that so

3:44

definitely Embrace Instagram it's one of

3:46

the easiest ways to gain a following

3:48

quickly and to drive people to your

3:50

website and definitely look at Twitter

3:53

and Facebook as well to share your posts

3:55

whenever you post something and to

3:57

engage your audience the rule here is

3:59

that think of social media like a dinner

4:01

party if you're at dinner with your

4:03

friends and they're only talking abouts

4:06

and not asking you about your life for

4:07

the latest girl or guy you're dating the

4:10

conversation's kind of boring but if

4:13

it's a dialogue and they're asking you

4:15

questions just like you're asking them

4:18

all of a sudden you're interested that's

4:20

what social media should be

4:23

like number four is by far the most

4:26

important tip which is put yourself out

4:30

there and don't be afraid of rejection

4:32

if I hadn't approached top deck travel

4:36

in hopes of partnering with them I

4:37

wouldn't be going to Morocco in 3 weeks

4:39

if I hadn't approached Ki I wouldn't be

4:42

going to Vietnam in September if I

4:44

hadn't approached mode media I wouldn't

4:47

be part of their blogger Network which

4:49

which reaches 406 million readers

4:51

worldwide if I hadn't pitch the story to

4:54

Vice I wouldn't have been on assignment

4:56

in Colombia the list goes on but the

4:59

only reason I have gotten many of the

5:01

opportunities I've gotten with both the

5:03

pin the mat project and my travel

5:04

writing is because I dare to ask for it

5:08

the final step is being consistent in

5:11

your blogging and evolving your blog

5:14

pretty straightforward but if you want

5:16

to keep your readers you have to turn

5:17

out new content every day preferably or

5:21

at least three times a week think about

5:24

it this way if a reader discovers your

5:26

blog and loves what they see and they

5:28

check your blog on Monday read a brand

5:31

new story they check it back on Tuesday

5:33

and nothing's new and then check back

5:35

the next seven days and nothing is new

5:38

you might lose that reader and you can't

5:40

fault them there's a whole world of

5:43

talented bloggers some of them traveling

5:45

at this very minute sharing amazing

5:48

posts and stories and fresh content and

5:50

if you're not turning out anything new

5:53

you're losing those readers so always

5:55

always always post and if you run out of

5:58

ideas because let's be honest we're not

6:00

vending machines of stories look to

6:03

refresh some of your old content ideas

6:05

for example I had a post on where to eat

6:09

in New York City that I wrote a year ago

6:11

I updated the photos added a few more

6:13

places and then reran it as a fresh post

6:17

and there we go that was a new post on a

6:20

new day and I didn't have to come think

6:22

of brand new ideas cuz sometimes the

6:25

inspiration isn't there especially if

6:27

you're in between trips the other thing

6:29

is to keep evolving your blog if you

6:31

haven't discovered blog Lovin absolutely

6:33

go visit it now it's a great way to

6:36

discover other bloggers that are

6:37

successful in the fields and to take

6:39

note of what they're doing for their

6:42

sites that work for them if you notice

6:43

they're using a widget that is really

6:46

great at capturing newsletter uh

6:49

subscriptions you can download it if you

6:52

notice they have a travel shop and you

6:54

love the way it's designed and you love

6:55

the concept create a travel shop and

6:58

make it your own on your own blog

7:00

look at what other bloggers are doing

7:01

and look at ideas that work for them and

7:04

you'll start to learn and create those

7:07

ideas for yourself if you guys like this

7:09

video make sure to subscribe to my

7:11

YouTube channel in the button below and

7:14

make sure to stay tuned for future

7:16

blogging tip videos where I'll share

7:18

things such as building a Blog following

7:21

approaching Brands how to get free

7:23

travel perks and all that jazz I hope

7:25

you guys enjoyed this and share any
